What Home Xbox sharing actually does
Home Xbox is a console-level license setting tied to the Microsoft/Xbox account that bought a digital game or receives games through an eligible subscription. When that account marks a console as its Home Xbox, other users on that console can use eligible shared licenses without the purchasing account remaining signed in.
The Microsoft Community answer that documents this procedure was last updated June 10, 2025. It says the setting covers Microsoft Store games and downloadable content purchased by the account, as well as games downloaded through a subscription. It also describes offline play for games already downloaded to the Home Xbox, provided the designation was made before the console went offline.

This is licensing, not a transfer of ownership between individual accounts. The purchasing account remains the owner, and each title can still have its own rules for add-ons, online services or account-bound items.
Before you set it up
Use the account that owns the licenses
You must sign in with the Microsoft/Xbox account that purchased the digital games or has the eligible subscription. A family member’s profile cannot designate a console for games owned only by somebody else.
Choose the household console deliberately
Home Xbox can be assigned to only one console at a time. For a household with multiple Xbox consoles, choose the one family members use most often, especially if they need access while the account owner is away or if that console must support offline play. This “most frequently used console” approach is a practical recommendation in the cited Microsoft Community answer, not a separately verified Microsoft policy.

Have the games downloaded while online
If offline access matters, download the games while the console is connected and complete the Home Xbox designation before disconnecting it. The cited guidance describes offline use for downloaded games; it does not guarantee that every game’s online mode, subscription check or connected feature will operate without an internet connection.

Step-by-step: make a family console your Home Xbox
- Turn on the console intended for family use. Connect it to the internet so the account and license information can be checked.
- Sign in with the owning account. Use the Microsoft/Xbox profile that bought the digital games or has the eligible subscription.
- Open the guide menu. Select Profile & system, then Settings.
- Open the personalization controls. Choose General, then Personalization.
- Open Home Xbox. Select My home Xbox.
- Confirm the change. Choose Make this my home Xbox and wait for the console to finish applying the license setting.
- Install the shared games. While signed in with the owning account, download the games and downloadable content the family is expected to use.
- Test a separate profile. Sign out of the owning account or switch to a family member’s account and launch an eligible downloaded game. Testing before disconnecting the console catches licensing problems while the account is still available.
Menu wording can change between Xbox system updates. If the labels differ, look for the Home Xbox control under the console’s General and Personalization settings rather than repeatedly changing accounts.

Sharing does not make every account benefit universal. In-game currency and some account-specific purchases remain tied to the account that bought them. The Microsoft Community answer specifically gives currency bought inside Minecraft and certain one-time bonuses or special-edition content as examples that may not be shared.
What may not carry over to other family profiles
In-game currency
Currency purchased inside a game can be account-bound. A family member may be able to launch the game through Home Xbox sharing but not spend or see currency bought by the owning account. Minecraft currency is the example cited in the support answer.
One-time bonuses and special-edition items
Pre-order rewards, one-time grants and special-edition extras can be attached to the purchasing profile rather than the console license. If a family member cannot see a bonus, verify the item’s own purchase and entitlement rules before changing Home Xbox again.

Online and service-dependent features
The Home Xbox setting does not override a game’s separate online, server or account requirements. Offline licensing can let a downloaded title start without a connection, but an online multiplayer mode or a feature that checks a service may still require connectivity and the appropriate entitlement.
How sharing works when the owner plays elsewhere
The account owner can use games on another Xbox while signed in with that account, even when the family console is set as Home Xbox. The practical arrangement is therefore:
- Family console: set as Home Xbox, allowing other profiles on that console to use eligible shared licenses.
- Owner’s secondary console: the owner signs in with the purchasing account to access that account’s games and subscription entitlements.
If the owner signs out of the secondary console, that console should not be treated as the shared device. Home Xbox sharing is designed to grant the broad device license to one designated console, not to make every console in a household independently licensed for every profile.

Changing the setting to help a second household console reverses the arrangement. There is no simultaneous two-console Home Xbox designation for one account.

Only one Home Xbox is active
When the account’s Home Xbox changes, the device licenses move to the newly designated console. Other users lose Home Xbox-based access on the previous console. The account owner can still access the content there only by signing in with the owning account, subject to the game’s normal requirements.
The reported five-change limit
The accessible Microsoft Community answer reports five Home Xbox changes in a rolling one-year period. The period begins with the first switch, and the console is said to display the next eligible date after the limit is reached. Because the official Xbox Support page did not expose its article text, treat the five-change figure as operational guidance rather than a permanently guaranteed policy. Read the message shown on your console before committing to another change.
Why you should not switch casually
A mistaken change can remove shared access from the family’s working console and consume one of the account’s allowed changes. Decide which console is the long-term household device, test it, and avoid moving the designation merely to troubleshoot one locked game.
Troubleshooting common problems
The Home Xbox option is missing
- Confirm that you are in the account’s profile and not a child or guest profile.
- Follow the current path under Profile & system > Settings > General > Personalization; wording can vary with system updates.
- Make sure the console is online and the owning account has completed sign-in.
A family member sees a lock icon
- On the intended shared console, sign in with the owning account.
- Return to My home Xbox and verify that the screen identifies this console as the Home Xbox.
- Check that the game was purchased by this account or downloaded through its active subscription.
- Install the game while online, then switch back to the family member’s profile and try again.
- If only an add-on is locked, check whether that item is account-specific rather than assuming the Home Xbox setting failed.
The game worked online but not offline
- Verify that the console was made Home Xbox before it lost internet access.
- Confirm that the game was fully downloaded, not waiting for an update or license check.
- Expect online multiplayer and other connected features to remain unavailable without a connection.
The old console lost access after a change
This is expected when the Home Xbox designation moves. Restore the old console only if it is the device the household has chosen for sharing; switching back consumes another change under the reported allowance.
The console says another change is unavailable
Read the displayed next eligible date and wait for the rolling period to permit another switch. Do not keep retrying or create additional profiles: the limit applies to the owning account’s Home Xbox changes.
Practical setup examples
One family console and one owner console
Set the family room console as Home Xbox using the owning account. Download the shared library there. Family members use their own profiles on that console, while the owner signs in on a separate personal console when playing elsewhere.

Designate the console used most often by family members as Home Xbox. The second console can be used by the owner while signed in. If both consoles need independent access for other profiles, Home Xbox alone cannot provide that simultaneously; moving the designation transfers the device licenses.
A subscription game disappears
Check whether the subscription entitlement is still active and whether the game remains included. Home Xbox sharing does not preserve access to a title removed from the subscription or to a benefit that the publisher limits to the subscribing account.
Security and account-handling practices
- Perform the change only on a console the household controls.
- Use the purchasing account for setup, then let each family member use their own Xbox profile so saves and achievements remain separated.
- Do not use repeated Home Xbox changes as a routine way to lend a library to different households; the account has one active Home Xbox and a reported rolling change limit.
- For an important add-on, bonus or in-game purchase, confirm its entitlement terms before buying it for shared use.
