Tractors, combines, and grain carts may be wide, slow to stop, difficult for their operators to see around, and preparing to turn. Harvest timing varies by crop and region, so expect equipment on rural roads during daylight and around dawn or dusk.
What to do when you approach farm equipment
- Ease off the accelerator early. Reduce speed as soon as you spot the machine, scan ahead, and allow extra travel time. Farm equipment may accelerate or stop slowly, and can lose speed on hills or curves.
- Leave a generous following gap. Tailgating cuts your reaction time and may put you in the operator’s blind spot. Keep enough distance to respond if the machine brakes, turns, or slows suddenly.
- Read the road and the machine together. Large equipment may occupy much of a narrow lane, cross the center line, or need a wide turn. Do not assume that a vehicle moving toward the road edge is inviting you to pass.
- Stay alert for surface hazards. Mud, crop material, or other debris may be on the pavement. Use headlights when visibility is poor and follow local guidance.
Minnesota’s September 16, 2026 harvest-season guidance reports 392 crashes involving farm equipment, 12 deaths, and 167 injuries in Minnesota during 2023–2025. Those figures describe Minnesota, not the nation. Minnesota Department of Transportation

When it is safe—and legal—to pass
Passing is a judgment call, not an entitlement. A slow vehicle does not make a pass safe. Before moving out, make sure passing is permitted, the road ahead is visible and clear, and you have enough room to complete the maneuver without forcing oncoming traffic to react.
Recommended Free Tools
- Do not pass in a no-passing zone or where hills, curves, intersections, traffic, or other obstructions limit your sight distance.
- Check that the equipment is not signaling or positioning for a left turn. A machine may move toward the right before making a wide left turn.
- Do not rely on a brief gap or the machine’s apparent pull-over as permission to pass. Wait until the full path is clear and legal.
- Indiana and Maryland guidance warns against passing within 100 feet of certain intersections, railroad crossings, bridges, elevation structures, or tunnels. That is state-specific guidance, not a nationwide rule; check the law where you are driving.
Indiana’s precautions explain why it is important to watch an operator’s position and signals before overtaking: Indiana Department of Homeland Security. Maryland gives its own safe-passing advice and local examples: Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration.

Meeting wide equipment on a narrow road
If farm equipment approaches from the opposite direction and there is not enough room for both vehicles to pass safely, slow down or stop and yield as needed. Do not squeeze alongside the machine or onto an unsafe edge to force a meeting. Wait until there is enough space to pass with room to spare.
What farm equipment operators can do
Make the machine visible
Use required lights and visibility devices, and keep lights, reflectors, and slow-moving vehicle (SMV) emblems clean and unobstructed. Dust can make a marker less visible. An emblem does not guarantee that a following driver has seen the equipment, so operators should still make turns deliberately and watch for traffic.

Minnesota’s September 2026 guidance says equipment traveling below 30 mph should use an SMV emblem. That threshold is Minnesota guidance; requirements differ by state and locality. The CDC and NIOSH also note that visibility devices may not always be present, so motorists should not assume every machine has a working emblem: CDC/NIOSH farm-safety guidance.

Choose a safe place to let traffic by
Allow following traffic to pass when a suitable place is available, but do not pull onto a soft, wet, steep, or otherwise unsafe shoulder just to clear the road. Wide, heavy equipment may need to finish a turn or continue to a proper pull-off before it can safely make room.

Check height and route restrictions
Plan a route that can accommodate the equipment and its load. MnDOT cites a 13-foot-6-inch legal height limit in Minnesota and says taller vehicles or loads may require a permit from the agency responsible for the road. Do not treat that figure as a national limit; check restrictions and permits for the specific roads on the route. MnDOT route and harvest guidance

Harvest work can put tractors and combines on public roads when light is low. A large machine may be hard to see, and its size, turning needs, or slow pace may be unexpected on a road shared with faster traffic. Public-road rules for agricultural equipment vary across states and localities. Minnesota’s speed and height guidance, and Indiana’s and Maryland’s passing cautions, are examples for those jurisdictions—not a single national code. The Federal Highway Administration describes agricultural equipment on public roads as an area shaped by state and federal regulation, with limits in crash data that matter when comparing figures across places: FHWA, agricultural equipment on public roads.
