AirDrop is the simplest choice between nearby Apple devices; Quick Share can transfer to an iPhone on supported Android models; and Google Photos works remotely when Backup quality is set to Original quality. A soft thumbnail inside a message does not prove the downloaded file was reduced, so check the saved file’s dimensions and details when quality matters.
What “without losing quality” actually means
Several different things are often called “quality.” A photo can keep its original pixel dimensions while being converted from one format to another, losing metadata, or being shown as a low-resolution preview. Conversely, a messaging app may display a soft preview while the attachment saved to the recipient’s phone remains full resolution.

- Full resolution: the saved file retains the photo’s original pixel dimensions.
- Original file: the file representation itself is preserved, including its format and, where supported, edit history and metadata.
- Original-quality backup: a cloud service stores the captured resolution rather than applying its storage-saving compression or resizing rules.
- Uncompressed: a much narrower claim. Most phone photographs are already compressed formats such as HEIC or JPEG; “uncompressed” is not automatically the same as “original.”
The safest workflow is therefore to use a direct file transfer or an original-quality cloud setting, and to verify the downloaded file rather than judging a preview.

| Nearby iPhone, iPad, or Mac | AirDrop | Use the Photos share sheet and enable All Photos Data when the original file, edits, and metadata matter. Apple’s iPhone guide documents this option. |
| Nearby Android phone to iPhone | Quick Share with AirDrop interoperability | The Android model must be supported, the iPhone must be discoverable, both devices must be nearby, and the iPhone user must accept. See the current compatibility information from Android. |
| Remote delivery or mixed devices | A cloud photo link or download | Confirm that the recipient can download the file and that any backup service is set to retain original quality. |
| The recipient cannot open the original format | Use a compatibility-oriented export | On iPhone, Apple’s Most Compatible option may convert files to JPEG or MOV. That improves compatibility but changes the original file representation. |
| Privacy is the priority | Review metadata before sending | Photos may include location, capture time, device information, and captions. Remove or limit metadata when the recipient does not need it. |
Send full-quality photos from iPhone to a nearby Apple device
AirDrop procedure
- Open Photos and select the images or videos.
- Tap Share, then choose AirDrop.
- Have the receiving iPhone, iPad, or Mac discoverable for AirDrop. Select it when it appears.
- The recipient accepts the transfer and saves or opens the files.
- If preserving the original file, edit history, and metadata is important, open Options in the share sheet and turn on All Photos Data before sending. Apple documents this control for AirDrop in its Share photos and videos on iPhone guide.
All Photos Data is not merely a resolution switch. It is the choice to include the original photo data, associated edits, and metadata through AirDrop. That can be useful for later editing, but it can also reveal information you did not intend to share.

Choose a file-format behavior deliberately
Apple’s share options include Automatic, Current, and Most Compatible. The exact choice depends on the recipient’s software:
- Current prevents a format conversion, making it the appropriate choice when the recipient can work with the original format.
- Most Compatible may convert a photo to JPEG or a video to MOV. This is useful when an older app or device cannot open the original format, but the converted file is no longer the exact original representation.
- Automatic lets Apple’s sharing workflow choose. If format preservation is critical, do not rely on an assumption about what Automatic will select; inspect the result after transfer.
Format compatibility and image quality are related but not identical. A conversion can preserve the visible dimensions while changing compression, editing information, or metadata.
Send photos from a supported Android phone to an iPhone
Quick Share can interoperate with AirDrop on certain Android models. Android describes the feature as sending and receiving “full-resolution photos and videos without losing any of their original detail,” but that is Android’s description of the supported workflow, not an independent test result. Compatibility is model-specific and can change, so check the current device list before relying on it. The official instructions are at Android’s Quick Share and iPhone guide.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDirect Quick Share transfer
- Confirm that the Android phone is one of the models supported for Quick Share and AirDrop interoperability. The published list includes certain models from Samsung Galaxy, Google Pixel, Xiaomi, OnePlus, OPPO, HONOR, and vivo; it does not mean every phone from those manufacturers is compatible.
- On the iPhone, make the device discoverable under its AirDrop settings.
- On Android, select the photos or videos and tap Share, then choose Quick Share.
- Select the nearby iPhone when it appears.
- The iPhone user accepts the request. Keep both devices nearby until the transfer finishes.
- For a large batch, select all required items in one Quick Share operation where the supported device path allows it, rather than repeatedly sending individual files.
If the iPhone does not appear, check the AirDrop visibility setting, distance between the phones, and whether the Android model is on the current supported list. A missing device is not evidence that the photo itself is incompatible.
Use the QR-code fallback
When direct discovery is unavailable, Quick Share can create a QR code. The iPhone recipient scans the code, opens the Quick Share page in a browser, and downloads the files. This avoids requiring the phones to complete a direct device-to-device discovery session, but the recipient still needs to download the resulting files rather than merely view the page.

Share remotely with Google Photos without reducing the stored resolution
Google Photos has a quality setting that applies to backups. Set it before relying on the library as the source of a full-quality download:
- Open Google Photos.
- Open Photos settings.
- Choose Backup.
- Open Photos and videos quality.
- Select Original quality.
Google says Original quality stores photos and videos at the captured resolution and uses your Google Account storage. The setting is documented in Google Photos Help.
Why Storage saver is not equivalent
Storage saver may compress photos and resize larger items. Google’s limits state that photos above 16 megapixels may be resized to 16 megapixels, while videos above 1080p may be resized to 1080p. Those figures are the documented behavior for Storage saver, not a guarantee that every item below the thresholds is untouched. If the recipient needs the captured resolution, use Original quality and verify the item details.
Check an individual item before sending its link
Google Photos provides a per-item details view that shows backup quality and file size. Open the photo or video, view its information, and confirm that it was backed up in Original quality before sharing. This check is especially important when the item was uploaded under an older setting or from a different device.

A cloud link is only as good as the file the recipient can download. Send the link through a channel the recipient can access, explain that they should download the original rather than save a screen preview, and verify the downloaded file if the image is needed for printing, editing, or publication.

Why photos look blurry in text and chat apps
A conversation view often shows a generated thumbnail or a progressively loaded preview. That display can be softer than the attachment stored behind it. Before concluding that a photo was compressed:
- Ask the recipient to save or download the attachment to the device.
- Open the saved file outside the message thread.
- Inspect its pixel dimensions, file type, and file size in the device’s information panel.
- Compare those details with the sender’s original file when available.
If the downloaded dimensions are smaller, the sending service reduced the image. If the dimensions match but the format differs, a conversion occurred instead. If the saved file matches and only the in-app preview is soft, the apparent quality problem was display-related.
Do not assume that an app’s “photo” button and its “file” or “document” attachment path behave the same way. Media-specific sharing can apply resizing or compression, while a direct file attachment may preserve the source file. Check the app’s current media-quality or attachment controls before sending important images.
Protect location and other metadata
Resolution is only one part of what a photo reveals. Apple states that shared media can include associated metadata such as date and time, location, device, and captions. The statement appears in Apple’s iPhone sharing guide.

When metadata is useful
- Photographers may need capture data and edit history for a later workflow.
- A family archive may benefit from the original date and location.
- Keeping metadata can help identify the source file when many similar images are transferred.
When metadata should be removed
- Do not include precise location when sending a photo taken at home, a child’s school, or another sensitive place unless the recipient needs it.
- Review captions and device information before distributing images publicly.
- Use the available sharing options to limit metadata when privacy matters, even if you keep the original pixel dimensions.
Turning off metadata does not necessarily reduce resolution. It changes what accompanies the image, so make the privacy decision separately from the quality decision.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Format compatibility: preserve the original or make it easier to open?
Modern iPhones commonly capture formats that are efficient but not accepted by every older app or device. Apple documents that the Most Compatible option may convert images to JPEG and videos to MOV. That can solve an opening problem, but it is a new file representation. If the recipient can handle the original format, Current avoids that conversion.
| Priority | Choice | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Exact file representation | Current | Recipient software must support the original format. |
| Broadest device and app compatibility | Most Compatible | Apple may convert to JPEG or MOV, so the result is not the exact original file. |
| Let the sharing workflow decide | Automatic | Inspect the received file if format preservation is important. |
Live Photos are another compatibility edge case. Apple notes that a Live Photo may be sent as a still image when the receiving service or device does not support Live Photos. If the motion component matters, confirm that the recipient’s device and the transfer path support it before sending.
Large transfers and practical reliability
Prepare the batch
- Select the original items in the Photos or gallery app instead of screenshots or previously downloaded previews.
- Remove accidental duplicates so the recipient does not have to identify multiple versions.
- For a very large batch, divide the transfer into clearly named groups and verify each group as it arrives.
Keep both sides ready
- Make the receiving device discoverable before initiating AirDrop or Quick Share.
- Keep the phones nearby and unlocked enough to accept the request.
- Ensure the recipient has enough free storage for the files.
- Do not delete the source until the recipient has opened several transferred files and confirmed their dimensions.
When a cloud link is better
A cloud download is often more practical when people are in different locations, when the batch is too large for a short-range transfer, or when recipients use different operating systems. It introduces a new check: the cloud item must be stored at original quality and the recipient must download the file rather than saving a preview.
Troubleshooting by symptom
| Symptom | Likely cause | Action |
|---|---|---|
| The photo looks blurry only in the conversation | Thumbnail or low-resolution preview | Download the attachment and inspect the saved file’s dimensions and details. |
| The saved file has smaller dimensions | The sending path resized the image | Use AirDrop, supported Quick Share, or a cloud source set to Original quality instead of a media-compressed send path. |
| The recipient cannot open the file | Unsupported original format | On iPhone, choose Most Compatible for a JPEG or MOV conversion, or use software that supports the original format. |
| The iPhone is missing from Quick Share | Unsupported Android model, iPhone not discoverable, or devices too far apart | Check the current compatibility list, AirDrop visibility, and proximity. Use the QR-code option if direct discovery is unavailable. |
| The Google Photos download is smaller than expected | Backup used Storage saver | Open the item’s details and check backup quality and size. Set Photos and videos quality to Original quality for future backups. |
| A Live Photo arrives as one still image | The receiving service or device does not support Live Photos | Use a path that supports Live Photos or accept a still image when motion is not required. |
How to verify that the recipient received the original
- Have the recipient download or save the file, not just open the preview.
- Check pixel dimensions against the sender’s original. Matching dimensions establish that the image was not resized, although they do not by themselves prove that every metadata field or compression characteristic is identical.
- Check the file type. A JPEG or MOV result from an iPhone sharing operation may indicate the Most Compatible conversion was used.
- For Google Photos, inspect the item’s backup quality and size before sharing and, when necessary, after downloading.
- Open a few files from a large batch at full size. A successful transfer notification confirms delivery, not necessarily that every item was saved correctly.
Fast recommendations for common situations
“How do I send photos from one iPhone to another without losing quality?”
Use Photos, select the items, tap Share, choose AirDrop, and enable All Photos Data in Options if you need the original data, edits, and metadata. Ask the recipient to accept and save the files, then verify one file’s dimensions.
Best Value
“How do I send full-resolution photos from Android to iPhone?”
Use Quick Share only after confirming that the specific Android model supports AirDrop interoperability. Make the iPhone discoverable, select the photos in Quick Share, choose the iPhone, and have its user accept. If it is not found, create a QR code so the recipient can scan it and download the files in a browser.
“How do I share original-quality photos with someone far away?”
Use a cloud photo library or file link, and verify that the source is stored at original quality. In Google Photos, choose Photos settings, Backup, Photos and videos quality, then Original quality. Tell the recipient to download the file and check its details.
“Why are my photos blurry when I text them?”
Check the downloaded attachment rather than the in-thread thumbnail. If the saved dimensions are smaller, the message service compressed it; switch to a direct file transfer or an original-quality cloud download for important images.
Bottom line
Use AirDrop with All Photos Data for nearby Apple devices, Quick Share with AirDrop interoperability for supported Android-to-iPhone transfers, and a cloud service configured for Original quality when sharing remotely. Treat format conversion, metadata, Live Photo support, and recipient downloads as separate checks. The reliable proof of quality is the saved file’s details, not how sharp a thumbnail looks inside a conversation.
