To share iCloud+ storage, you must already have an Apple Family Sharing group. On an iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Family > Subscriptions > iCloud+ and follow the prompts. On a Mac, open Apple menu > System Settings > Family > Subscriptions > iCloud+ > Share with Family. Sharing combines everyone’s storage under one plan, but it does not combine anyone’s photos, files, messages or other personal data.

What you need before turning on iCloud+ sharing

iCloud+ sharing is an add-on to Family Sharing, not an automatic result of creating a family group. The organizer must first create a Family Sharing group and invite the members. Apple’s guidance says additional steps are required before an iCloud+ subscription is shared.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Each person needs their own Apple Account and must belong to the same Family Sharing group.
  • The device used for setup must be signed in to an Apple Account. If the Family section is missing, Apple recommends checking that sign-in first.
  • Use a compatible, current version of iOS, iPadOS or macOS. Apple notes that labels can vary by operating-system version.
  • Decide which existing iCloud+ subscription, if any, should become the family plan. Only one shared plan is used by the group at a time.

Once enabled, the plan’s capacity is a shared pool. Apple does not publish a fixed quota or allocation formula for each member, so one person can use more than another as long as the group remains within the plan’s total capacity.

Clarify who will manage the subscription

Family Sharing and iCloud+ have related but distinct roles. The family organizer administers the group, while the person who purchased the iCloud+ plan is the plan sharer. Apple says the organizer or the member who bought the shared plan can purchase more storage. Confirm who will handle upgrades before enabling the plan, particularly if the organizer is not the person with the existing subscription.

It also helps to check each account’s current storage use. Look for large iCloud Photos libraries, device backups and iCloud Drive files. This is not a per-person budgeting exercise—Apple does not provide individual quotas—but it gives the family a realistic view of whether 50 GB, 200 GB, 2 TB, 6 TB or 12 TB leaves enough headroom.

Turn on sharing from an iPhone or iPad

  1. Confirm that Family Sharing is already configured and that the intended members have joined the group.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Tap Family. If it is not listed, verify that the device is signed in to an Apple Account.
  4. Tap Subscriptions.
  5. Choose iCloud+.
  6. Follow the onscreen instructions to share the existing iCloud+ plan with the family.

After the final confirmation, the subscription becomes available to the group. Apple’s exact wording may differ slightly between iOS and iPadOS releases, but the Family, Subscriptions and iCloud+ route is the documented path.

Have the family members check their own iCloud settings after the change. A person on the free 5 GB plan should be added to the shared storage automatically. Someone with a paid personal plan may need to choose whether to use the shared plan, as described below; sharing does not silently run both subscriptions together.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Turn on sharing from a Mac

  1. Open the Apple menu in the upper-left corner and select System Settings.
  2. Select Family in the sidebar.
  3. Select Subscriptions, then iCloud+.
  4. Choose Share with Family.
  5. Complete the onscreen confirmation.

If the Family pane or the iCloud+ subscription is absent, check the Apple Account used for System Settings and confirm that the Mac is part of the intended Family Sharing group.

The Mac path changes slightly across macOS releases, so follow the labels displayed on screen rather than looking for an identically named button in another menu. The important sequence is the signed-in account’s Family settings, then Subscriptions, then iCloud+.

How much storage can the family share?

Apple’s iCloud User Guide, accessed October 13, 2026, lists these iCloud+ capacities for family sharing:

Plan capacity What the figure means
50 GB Total storage available to the family group
200 GB Total storage available to the family group
2 TB Total storage available to the family group
6 TB Total storage available to the family group
12 TB Total storage available to the family group; Apple’s largest listed tier

These are plan capacities, not five separate allowances. The organizer and up to five other family members can share the plan. Apple does not state that each member receives an equal portion, and there is no published per-person calculator. Choose a tier by looking at the group’s combined use of iCloud Photos, iCloud Drive, device backups and other iCloud data, then leave room for future growth.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How the shared pool works in practice

Every member’s eligible iCloud data counts against the same total. If one person’s photo library grows, less capacity remains for everyone else; there is no automatic partition that reserves an untouched slice for each account. Conversely, a member who uses very little storage does not create a separate quota that another member can formally claim. The useful measurement is the group’s total usage compared with the plan’s total capacity.

The group can contain the organizer plus up to five additional family members. A larger family cannot add more people to the same Family Sharing group for this plan. If storage demand changes, the authorized plan manager can move to another listed tier, up to 12 TB.

Apple’s published material does not give a formula based on the number of people, device count or photo volume. Do not assume that six members require a particular tier, or that a 2 TB plan supplies 333 GB per person. Review actual usage and allow space for future photos, files and backups instead.

What family members share—and what stays private

Sharing gives members access to the subscription’s storage and eligible iCloud+ features while each person continues using a separate Apple Account. Apple specifically says photos, documents and other information remain private even though the service access is shared.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Item Shared? Practical result
iCloud storage capacity Yes Everyone draws from the same plan total.
Photos and videos in iCloud Photos No Members do not automatically see one another’s libraries.
iCloud Drive files and documents No Files remain in the owner’s account unless that person deliberately shares a file or folder.
Device backups No Backups belong to the device owner’s Apple Account while consuming group capacity.
Apple Account credentials and personal data No Each member keeps a separate account and private account content.
iCloud+ features Generally available to the group Examples include iCloud Private Relay, Hide My Email, custom email domains and HomeKit Secure Video, subject to plan, device and regional support.

Feature availability is not universal. Apple says some iCloud+ features vary by country or region and require compatible hardware or a supported plan. Sharing the subscription therefore does not guarantee that every member can use every feature in every location.

What privacy means day to day

The plan owner does not receive a browser-style view of another member’s Photos library, Drive folders or backups merely because storage is shared. Each person continues to sign in with their own Apple Account. Sharing a specific file, folder or photo remains an intentional action by that account holder, separate from enabling iCloud+.

Privacy does not mean usage is invisible at the capacity level. The family must share enough total storage for all accounts, and Apple provides family storage management views and low-storage notifications. A member can therefore contribute substantial usage to the pool without exposing the underlying documents or images to relatives.

What to do if someone already pays for iCloud+

A member on Apple’s free 5 GB plan is added to the family storage automatically when the shared plan is enabled. A member with a paid personal iCloud+ subscription has two choices: move to the family plan or keep the personal plan while remaining in Family Sharing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Choice Storage arrangement Billing consequence
Use family storage The member’s storage comes from the shared family pool. Apple says the unused remainder of the personal iCloud+ plan is refunded.
Keep the personal plan The member continues using their own subscription and does not draw from the family plan for that account. The personal subscription continues under its existing billing terms.

Apple does not allow both plans to be active for the same member at the same time. To switch on an iPhone or iPad, look for Use Family Storage when the family plan is offered. On a Mac, choose Use Shared Plan. Review the confirmation before accepting the change so you know which subscription is being replaced.

Choose deliberately rather than assuming a switch is required

Keeping a personal plan is a valid choice for a member who wants separate billing or prefers not to move that account onto the family subscription. The account can remain in Family Sharing while retaining its own iCloud+ service. If the member switches, Apple says the unused remainder is refunded; the exact timing and presentation of that refund are handled through the subscription account.

Before selecting either option, check which account is signed in and which plan the confirmation screen names. A household can otherwise believe that everyone is using the shared pool while one paid member is still consuming a separate personal subscription.

Check family usage and buy more storage

Storage is managed at the family-plan level. On an iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Family > Subscriptions > iCloud+ > Manage This Subscription to review usage or purchase a larger tier. On a Mac, open System Settings > Family > Subscriptions > iCloud+.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apple says every member receives a notification when the group is low on storage. The family organizer or the member who originally bought the shared plan can purchase more capacity, up to the 12 TB tier listed in Apple’s current guide. If the group is approaching its limit, identify large photo libraries, old device backups and unused Drive files before upgrading; deleting data is optional, but it can postpone the need for a larger plan.

A useful storage check

  1. Open the family iCloud+ management screen and note the total capacity and current use.
  2. Ask each member to review unusually large Photos, Drive or backup usage in their own account.
  3. Decide whether removing data is appropriate or whether the group needs the next available tier.
  4. Have the organizer or original plan purchaser complete the upgrade, since Apple assigns that purchasing authority to those roles.

Do not delete a backup or file solely because the family is near its limit unless the owner has confirmed that it is no longer needed. The safer alternatives are to preserve the data and upgrade, or to remove only content that has another reliable copy.

Change which family member provides the shared plan

Apple allows the current plan sharer to stop sharing and another member to take over. Coordinate the change first so the group is not left without enough capacity.

  1. On the current sharer’s iPhone or iPad, open Settings > [name] > iCloud > Storage > Family Usage.
  2. Tap Stop Sharing with Family and confirm.
  3. On the member who will take over, buy or upgrade an iCloud+ plan.
  4. On that member’s device, open Settings > [name] > iCloud > Storage.
  5. Tap Share with Family and invite the other family members.

The bracketed [name] in Apple’s path means the signed-in person’s name as displayed in Settings; it is not text you type literally. Keep the old plan available until the replacement plan is active if the family is close to its storage limit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Because stopping one plan and starting another are separate actions, avoid doing them casually while a member is over the free 5 GB. Arrange the replacement first, confirm that the other members have been invited, and then verify that the new shared plan appears in their Family settings.

What happens when sharing stops or someone leaves?

A member who is using more than the free 5 GB must obtain an individual iCloud+ plan if family sharing ends. If the account’s stored content is larger than its available capacity and no new plan is purchased, Apple says several syncing operations stop:

  • New photos and videos stop uploading to iCloud Photos.
  • New files stop uploading to iCloud Drive.
  • iOS and iPadOS device backups stop completing.

Existing data is not described as being immediately erased in Apple’s guidance. The immediate risk is that new content and backups cannot finish once the account exceeds its available capacity. Before leaving a group or stopping a plan, check the account’s storage use and arrange an individual plan if the free 5 GB will not cover it.

Leaving checklist

  • Check how much storage the departing account currently uses.
  • Compare that amount with the free 5 GB capacity.
  • If usage is higher, purchase an individual iCloud+ plan before or as part of leaving.
  • After the change, confirm that iCloud Photos uploads, iCloud Drive uploads and device backups can complete.

The same caution applies when a sharer stops the family plan without a replacement. A member may be able to continue temporarily if their account fits within available capacity, but an account over capacity should not be expected to keep syncing new material.

Troubleshoot common setup problems

Family does not appear in Settings

Check that the device is signed in to an Apple Account, then verify that the account belongs to the intended Family Sharing group. Apple’s setup path depends on the Family section being available.

Family Sharing exists, but iCloud+ is not shared

Family Sharing alone does not activate iCloud+ sharing. Open the iCloud+ subscription inside the Family settings and complete the separate Share with Family action.

A paid member cannot see the shared storage

That person may still be using their personal plan. On iPhone or iPad, select Use Family Storage; on Mac, select Use Shared Plan. Apple requires choosing one plan rather than running both simultaneously.

The group is nearly full

Open the family iCloud+ management screen and review usage. The organizer or the member who purchased the shared plan can upgrade the capacity. If no upgrade is made, remove unneeded backups or files only after checking that they are safe to delete.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A feature is unavailable to one member

Check the member’s country or region, device compatibility and the family tier. Apple lists regional and system requirements for features such as Private Relay, Hide My Email, custom email domains and HomeKit Secure Video.

The menu names look different

Apple changes labels between iOS, iPadOS and macOS releases. Start from the signed-in account’s Family settings and look for Subscriptions and iCloud+. On a Mac, the control is under System Settings; on an iPhone or iPad, it is under Settings.

The wrong person is being asked to upgrade

Apple assigns purchasing authority to the family organizer or the member who bought the shared plan. If another member sees no upgrade control, ask one of those authorized people to make the change rather than creating a second, uncoordinated family plan.

A practical decision checklist

  • Use the family plan when one shared capacity is convenient and the group’s combined use fits an available tier.
  • Keep a personal plan when a member wants independent billing or does not want that account moved to the family subscription.
  • Choose a larger tier when current combined usage leaves little headroom for photos, files and backups; Apple’s listed choices run from 50 GB through 12 TB.
  • Assign a plan manager deliberately because the family organizer or the member who purchased the shared plan controls upgrades.
  • Check privacy expectations before inviting someone: storage is pooled, but account content remains private unless a person explicitly shares it.
  • Plan transitions before stopping a plan or removing a member, especially when that account uses more than 5 GB.

Frequently asked questions

Can my family see my iCloud Photos?

No. Apple says photos, documents and other information stay private because each member uses a separate Apple Account. Photos are counted against the shared capacity, but they are not automatically visible to other members.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is iCloud+ shared automatically when I create Family Sharing?

No. Family Sharing must already exist, and you must separately open the iCloud+ subscription in Family settings and choose to share it.

Do family members receive equal storage quotas?

No published equal-quota rule exists. The plan is one group pool, and Apple does not provide a per-member allocation formula.

Can I keep my personal iCloud+ plan and use the family plan too?

Not for the same member at the same time. You can keep the personal plan while remaining in Family Sharing, or choose Use Family Storage or Use Shared Plan. Apple says switching refunds the unused remainder of the personal plan.

Who can buy more family storage?

The family organizer or the member who purchased the shared plan can upgrade the group, up to Apple’s listed 12 TB tier.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How many people can share one iCloud+ plan?

The organizer can share with up to five other family members.

What happens if someone leaves while using more than 5 GB?

They need an individual plan to retain enough capacity. Without one, new iCloud Photos uploads, iCloud Drive uploads and iOS or iPadOS backups can stop when stored content exceeds available space.

Are Private Relay and other iCloud+ features guaranteed for everyone?

No. Apple lists regional, device and plan requirements. Features such as Private Relay, Hide My Email, custom email domains and HomeKit Secure Video may not be available in every country or on every device.

Bottom line

Enable iCloud+ from the Family settings on an iPhone, iPad or Mac after Family Sharing is established. The group receives one shared storage pool and eligible iCloud+ features, while every member keeps a separate Apple Account and private content. Existing paid subscribers can switch to the family plan for a refund of unused time or keep their own subscription; they cannot use both plans at once. Monitor the group’s usage and arrange replacement storage before anyone leaves or sharing is stopped.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can my family see my iCloud Photos?

No. Photos remain in each person’s private Apple Account. They use shared capacity but are not automatically visible to other family members.

Is iCloud+ shared automatically with Family Sharing?

No. After creating the Family Sharing group, separately open Family settings, choose Subscriptions and iCloud+, then complete Share with Family.

Do members get equal storage quotas?

No. Apple describes one shared pool and does not publish a per-member quota or allocation formula.

Can I keep a personal iCloud+ plan and use the family plan?

You may keep the personal plan while staying in Family Sharing, or switch to Use Family Storage or Use Shared Plan. Both plans cannot be active for the same member simultaneously.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Who can upgrade the family’s storage?

The family organizer or the member who purchased the shared plan can buy more storage, up to the 12 TB tier listed by Apple.

How many relatives can share the plan?

The organizer can share with up to five additional family members.

What happens when a member leaves while over 5 GB?

Without an individual plan, new Photos uploads, Drive uploads and iOS or iPadOS backups can stop once the account exceeds its available capacity.

Are all iCloud+ features available to every member?

Not necessarily. Apple says feature availability depends on country or region, compatible devices and the supported plan.

The Bottom Line

iCloud+ sharing pools storage without pooling personal content. Set it up from Family settings, choose a tier based on total usage, and arrange individual storage before a member leaves or sharing stops.
