How to Share Files Between an iPhone and Android Phone

The best way to move files between an iPhone and an Android phone depends on the Android model. If it supports Google’s Quick Share interoperability with Apple AirDrop, you can send files directly in either direction when the phones are nearby. If it does not, use Quick Share’s QR transfer, a cloud-storage link, or a compatible USB drive.

Before starting, identify the exact Android model and check Google’s current compatibility list. Support varies by device and market, so direct AirDrop sharing is not universal across Android phones.

Method Best fit What both phones need Important limits
Quick Share and AirDrop interoperability Nearby phones whose Android model is on Google’s supported-device list Nearby devices; Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled; the iPhone set to AirDrop “Everyone for 10 minutes” Only supported Android models can use this direct route; the recipient must accept
Quick Share QR transfer An Android phone that cannot use direct AirDrop interoperability Internet access on both phones and an iPhone browser The download is available for 24 hours; published allowance is 10 GB per 24 hours; mobile data charges may apply
Cloud storage Remote handoffs, repeated access, or large batches that do not need an immediate nearby transfer An account or share link and enough storage; the recipient needs access to the service Upload and download use internet data; sharing permissions and storage quotas apply
External USB storage An offline handoff when both phones support the drive, connector, and file system A compatible drive or adapter and a supported file system Connectors and format support differ by phone; one drive does not fit every iPhone and Android phone

No official comparative test establishes a universal fastest or most reliable method across file sizes, phone models, and network conditions. Choose based on compatibility, proximity, internet access, and the recipient’s ability to accept or download the files.

Check whether direct Quick Share and AirDrop sharing is supported

Google’s current compatibility reference includes supported models from Google, Samsung, Xiaomi, OnePlus, OPPO, HONOR, and vivo. The list changes, and availability can vary by market. A phone made by one of those manufacturers is not automatically supported; the exact model must be listed.

What support means

A supported Android phone can use Quick Share to discover an iPhone through AirDrop, and an iPhone can use AirDrop to discover that Android phone. The documented direct mode uses AirDrop’s temporary “Everyone for 10 minutes” visibility setting. It is not evidence that all Android devices have native AirDrop support.

Google announced the two-way interoperability beginning with the Pixel 10 family on November 20, 2025. That announcement does not turn the feature into a universal Android capability; model eligibility remains the deciding factor.

Prepare both phones

  • Keep the phones close together.
  • Turn on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on the iPhone and Android phone.
  • Unlock both devices when prompted and confirm the recipient’s device name in person.
  • On the iPhone, open AirDrop settings and select “Everyone for 10 minutes.” Apple says this setting automatically resets after ten minutes.
  • On Android, open Quick Share settings and make sure receiving is enabled. A supported Samsung phone may additionally show a “Share with Apple devices” switch.

If you are transferring sensitive material, do the compatibility check before handing over the phone. It is better to switch methods immediately than to leave AirDrop discoverable while troubleshooting.

Send files from Android to iPhone with direct interoperability

  1. Make the iPhone discoverable. On the iPhone, open the AirDrop settings and choose “Everyone for 10 minutes.” Keep Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on and leave the phones nearby.
  2. Open the Android sharing sheet. Select the photos or files you want to send, tap Share, and choose Quick Share.
  3. Select the iPhone. Wait for the nearby iPhone to appear and verify its name with the recipient before tapping it.
  4. Accept on the iPhone. The iPhone user accepts the AirDrop notification. The files then arrive through the normal iPhone receiving flow.

You can select more than one item if the Android app exposes multi-select, but the available controls vary by file manager and gallery. The transfer itself does not require a cloud account or a shared messaging service when this direct route works.

If the iPhone does not appear, confirm that “Everyone for 10 minutes” is still active, both radios are on, the phones are close, and the Android model is on the current supported list. A missing device is often a compatibility issue rather than a problem with the selected file.

Send files from iPhone to Android with direct interoperability

  1. Enable receiving on Android. Turn on Quick Share receive mode. On some Samsung phones, Quick Share settings also require Share with Apple devices to be enabled.
  2. Select the files on iPhone. In Photos or Files, select the items, tap Share, and choose AirDrop.
  3. Choose the Android phone. Keep the Android phone nearby and wait for its name to appear. Confirm the name with the recipient before selecting it.
  4. Accept on Android. The Android user accepts the incoming request and lets the transfer complete.

The iPhone still needs the temporary “Everyone for 10 minutes” AirDrop visibility mode for this documented cross-platform route. When the transfer is finished, return to your preferred AirDrop visibility setting rather than leaving the temporary mode enabled.

If AirDrop is not offered for the selected item, try sharing from the Photos or Files app rather than from a third-party viewer. If the Android device remains absent, stop repeating the attempt and verify model support before moving to QR, cloud, or USB.

Use Quick Share’s QR code when direct sharing is unavailable

QR transfer is the practical fallback when an Android model is not compatible with direct AirDrop interoperability but has Quick Share and its QR option. Instead of creating a direct nearby connection, Android presents a code that the iPhone user scans in a browser.

Android-to-iPhone QR steps

  1. On Android, select the files or photos.
  2. Tap Share, choose Quick Share, and select Use QR code.
  3. Show the QR code to the iPhone user.
  4. On the iPhone, scan the code with the Camera app or a QR scanner.
  5. Follow the browser page that opens and start the download.

QR-transfer conditions

  • Both phones need internet access. Use Wi-Fi when possible; mobile data charges may apply if either phone uses cellular data.
  • Google says the transfer is end-to-end encrypted.
  • The download remains available for 24 hours.
  • The published transfer allowance is 10 GB per 24 hours.
  • The transfer does not count against the user’s personal Google Drive storage.

The 10 GB figure is a daily allowance, not a promise that every individual file will download at the same rate. If the selected items exceed the allowance, remove some files or wait for the allowance to reset. Because the link expires, the recipient should download the files within the 24-hour window. For a recurring exchange or a recipient who cannot download immediately, cloud storage is usually a better fit.

Share through cloud storage

Cloud sharing works when the phones are in different places, when direct interoperability is unavailable, or when the recipient needs access later. Google documents uploading common file types to Drive from Android. Apple’s Files app can add Google Drive, Box, Dropbox, and Microsoft OneDrive as storage locations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Upload from Android and open on iPhone

  1. Open the cloud-storage app on Android and upload the selected files.
  2. Create a share link or invite the recipient’s account, depending on the service’s sharing controls.
  3. Send the link through your usual messaging or email channel.
  4. On iPhone, open the link in a browser or add the service to Files and download or save the items locally.

Upload from iPhone and open on Android

  1. In the iPhone Files app, choose a file, tap Share, and select the cloud-storage app, or move the file into that service’s folder.
  2. Set the service’s sharing permission and copy the link or invite the Android user.
  3. On Android, open the link or the service’s app and download the files.

Check the account used for the upload, available storage, link permissions, and whether the recipient must sign in. A link that is limited to one account will not work for an unauthenticated recipient. Cloud services also require an active connection for uploading and downloading, unlike a physical drive.

Cloud storage can also be the least surprising choice for a remote recipient because the sender can resend the same link or change permissions without repeating a nearby pairing attempt. It is not automatically free: storage quotas, an existing subscription, and mobile-data use depend on the service and account. Check those terms in the service you choose rather than assuming all providers have the same limits.

Transfer files offline with an external USB drive

A USB storage drive can act as an offline handoff: copy files from the first phone to the drive, disconnect it, connect it to the second phone, and copy the files into that phone. This is useful when internet access is poor or when you do not want to upload private files. The drive itself is a hardware purchase if you do not already own one; compatibility is more important than choosing a particular capacity or brand.

iPhone requirements

Apple says an iPhone can access external USB storage through the Files app. Depending on the iPhone model and the drive, you may need a compatible connector or adapter. Apple lists APFS, encrypted APFS, HFS+, exFAT, FAT32, and FAT among supported formats, and says the storage device must have one data partition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Android requirements

Google documents USB-storage operations through Files by Google on Android 7.0 and later. The phone still needs a physically compatible connector or adapter, and the drive’s format must be readable by that device.

Offline handoff steps

  1. Connect the drive to the sending phone with the correct connector or adapter.
  2. Open the phone’s file manager, select the files, and copy or move them to the drive.
  3. Eject or disconnect the drive safely.
  4. Connect it to the receiving phone.
  5. Open Files on iPhone or Files by Google on Android, select the copied items, and save them to the desired folder.

Do not assume that a USB-C drive works directly with every iPhone or Android phone. Some phones use different ports, some require powered adapters, and file-system support can differ. Verify the connector, adapter, format, and partition layout before relying on a drive for a time-sensitive transfer. If the drive contains only one partition but still fails, test it with the phone’s built-in file app and check whether the adapter supplies enough power.

Security and privacy considerations

Direct interoperability

Google’s security publication describes Quick Share/AirDrop interoperability as using a direct peer-to-peer connection rather than routing the file through a server. Google says the design underwent internal reviews and testing and an independent security assessment by NetSPI. Those are Google’s published design and testing claims; they are not a substitute for your own risk assessment or a guarantee that every phone configuration is equally secure.

Use the temporary visibility setting only while transferring. Confirm the recipient’s device name in person, accept requests only from the intended person, and restore your preferred AirDrop and Quick Share visibility afterward. Do not accept a similarly named device merely because it is the first one shown.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

QR and cloud links

QR transfers require an internet connection and create a download page that expires after 24 hours. Treat the QR code and resulting link as private while the transfer is active. For cloud services, review whether the link allows anyone with the link, only invited accounts, or an organization’s members to access the files. Remove or restrict a link after the recipient has downloaded the data when the service provides that control.

USB drives

An external drive avoids cloud upload but can be lost or left with copies of the files. Disconnect it after use, keep it under your control, and delete temporary copies from the drive when they are no longer needed.

Troubleshoot a failed transfer

The iPhone or Android phone does not appear

  • Recheck the exact Android model against Google’s live supported-device list.
  • Set the iPhone to AirDrop “Everyone for 10 minutes” again; the setting may have expired.
  • Turn Wi-Fi and Bluetooth off and on, unlock both phones, and bring them closer together.
  • On Android, confirm that Quick Share receive mode is enabled. On supported Samsung phones, confirm “Share with Apple devices.”
  • Verify the recipient’s device name rather than selecting an unknown nearby device.

The QR option is missing

Quick Share’s QR availability can vary by model and software. If the option is not present, use a cloud-storage link or an external drive instead. Do not treat the absence of the QR control as proof that the files or iPhone are defective.

The QR download will not start

  • Check that both phones have internet access.
  • Try Wi-Fi instead of cellular data if the connection is unstable or data charges are a concern.
  • Confirm that fewer than 24 hours have passed since the QR transfer was created.
  • Check whether the transfer has reached the 10 GB per 24-hour allowance.
  • Generate a new QR transfer if the original page expired.

A cloud link says access is denied

Ask the sender to verify the link permission and the account invited to view it. If the service requires sign-in, use the invited account or request a new link with the appropriate access level. Also check that the sender has enough storage to complete the upload.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The USB drive is not detected

  • Confirm the connector and adapter match the phone’s port.
  • Check that the drive has one data partition and a supported format.
  • Try Files on iPhone or Files by Google on Android rather than a third-party file manager.
  • If the phone cannot provide enough power, use a compatible powered adapter or another drive.

Which option should you use?

  • Use direct Quick Share/AirDrop when the Android model is explicitly supported and both phones are together. It avoids uploading the files and provides two-way transfer.
  • Use QR transfer when the Android phone supports Quick Share but not direct interoperability, and both people can download within 24 hours.
  • Use cloud storage for remote recipients, delayed downloads, or files that need controlled access over time.
  • Use USB storage when both phones and the drive are compatible and you need an offline handoff.

Compare the exact Android model, whether the phones are nearby, whether Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or internet access is available, whether the recipient can accept or download promptly, and whether a cloud account or USB adapter is already available. No documented speed ranking applies to every file size, device, and network condition.

Google announced two-way Quick Share and AirDrop interoperability beginning with the Pixel 10 family on November 20, 2025. Compatibility and instructions were checked against current Apple and Google documentation on October 13, 2026, but device support can change. Check the recipient’s exact model immediately before using the direct-transfer steps.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can every Android phone send files to an iPhone with AirDrop?

No. Direct Quick Share and AirDrop interoperability is limited to Android models on Google’s current supported-device list, and availability can vary by market. Check the exact model rather than relying on the manufacturer name.

What AirDrop setting is required?

For the documented cross-platform route, set the iPhone’s AirDrop visibility to “Everyone for 10 minutes.” The setting resets automatically after ten minutes, so repeat it if it expires, then restore your preferred setting after the transfer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do both phones need Wi-Fi and Bluetooth?

Apple’s direct-transfer instructions call for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth to be on and the phones to be nearby. The recipient must also accept the request.

How do I send files to an unsupported Android phone?

Use Quick Share’s “Use QR code” option if it is available. The iPhone scans the code in a browser. Both phones need internet access, the download is available for 24 hours, and the published allowance is 10 GB per 24 hours.

Does Quick Share QR transfer use Google Drive storage?

Google says QR transfers do not count against personal Google Drive storage. Internet access is still required, and mobile-data charges may apply when Wi-Fi is not used.

Which cloud services work across iPhone and Android?

Google Drive, Box, Dropbox, and Microsoft OneDrive are documented options. Check each service’s storage quota, sign-in requirement, and link permissions before sending.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use a USB-C flash drive with both phones?

Not automatically. Confirm each phone’s port, any required adapter, the drive’s format, power needs, and one-partition requirement. Apple lists APFS, encrypted APFS, HFS+, exFAT, FAT32, and FAT; Android support depends on the device and file manager.

Which method is fastest?

There is no official comparison establishing one universally fastest or most reliable method across file sizes, phone models, and network conditions. Choose based on compatibility, proximity, internet access, and the recipient’s ability to accept or download.

The Bottom Line

Check the exact Android model first. If it supports Quick Share/AirDrop interoperability, use the nearby direct steps with AirDrop set to “Everyone for 10 minutes.” Otherwise, use QR transfer when both phones have internet, a cloud link for remote or delayed access, or a compatible USB drive for an offline handoff.
