Use the account that bought the games to designate the family member’s console as that account’s Home Xbox. On that console, go to Settings > Personalization > My home Xbox and confirm the designation. Other profiles can then use eligible digital games, durable add-ons and qualifying subscription-enabled content without the purchasing account remaining signed in. Consumable add-ons stay with the purchasing account. On any other Xbox, the purchaser must remain signed in and connected to Xbox services for other profiles to use the purchaser’s digital content.
What Xbox game sharing actually does
Xbox does not transfer ownership of a digital game to another Microsoft account. Instead, the purchasing account designates one console as its Home Xbox. That console receives the purchasing account’s console-based licenses, allowing other people who sign in there with their own profiles to use eligible content.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Microsoft describes the Home console policy for the Xbox One and Xbox Series device families. Its documented control is Settings > Personalization > My home Xbox. The account that bought the game or subscription-enabled content must make the designation; the family member does not set it from their own profile.
Once the intended console is designated, the purchasing account does not have to stay signed in for other profiles on that Home Xbox to launch qualifying games. This is the key distinction between Home-console sharing and use on another console.

For example, suppose a parent buys a digital game and designates a child’s Xbox as the parent’s Home Xbox. The child signs in with the child’s own profile, not the parent’s, and can launch the eligible game from that console. The parent can use the same purchases on another Xbox while signed in there. The arrangement is about which hardware holds the console license, not about combining the two accounts.
The setting also does not copy a download. If the game is not installed, the family member still has to download it, and normal updates, storage and network requirements still apply. Home Xbox supplies the entitlement that allows the launch; it does not bypass installation or a title’s own platform requirements.
The rule is documented in Microsoft’s Product sharing model for games, updated April 22, 2026.

What you need before setting it up
- The purchasing account: Sign in with the account that owns the digital games or subscription access. A family member’s account cannot designate a console for somebody else’s purchases.
- The console to share: Decide which physical Xbox the family member will use most often. That is the console that should become the purchasing account’s Home Xbox.
- The family member’s own profile: The other person should sign in with their own Xbox profile so saves, achievements and play history remain associated with that account.
- Installed or downloadable games: Sharing controls licensing access; it does not remove the normal requirement to download, install or update a game on the console.
- A compatible entitlement: Digital games, durable add-ons and some subscription-enabled content can be shared. Consumable add-ons cannot.
No new console, controller, cable or other hardware is required to configure Home Xbox sharing. The setup is an account-and-console setting. You also do not need to create a second copy of the purchasing account for the family member; using a separate profile is the safer way to keep each person’s saves and achievements separate.
Set a family member’s console as your Home Xbox
- Sign in with the purchasing account. Use the account that bought the digital game or holds the relevant subscription. Do not begin from the family member’s profile.
- Open console settings. From the Xbox dashboard, open Settings.
- Open Personalization. Select Personalization, then choose My home Xbox.
- Designate this console. Confirm the option that makes the current console the purchasing account’s Home Xbox. Read the confirmation prompt before accepting it, because the designation applies to the console currently being configured.
- Switch to the family member’s profile. Have the other person sign in with their own account on that same console.
- Test an eligible game. Start a digitally purchased game from the family member’s profile. The purchasing account does not need to remain signed in for the Home-console license to work.
Make the change while you are physically using the console that should receive the shared license. Setting the account as Home Xbox on your own console instead will make that machine the one that gets independent access. If the family member uses more than one Xbox, choose the one where unsupervised or independent play matters most.
Microsoft’s menu labels can change with console software updates. If your dashboard does not show the wording exactly, look in the console’s Personalization settings for the Home Xbox control. Microsoft’s consumer support page is My home Xbox; use it for the current navigation if your interface differs.
How access works after setup
On the designated Home Xbox
Other profiles signed in on the Home Xbox can use eligible digital games and durable downloadable content under the purchasing account’s console license. The purchaser can sign out, and the other profile can continue using qualifying shared content according to Microsoft’s Home-console policy.

This arrangement is useful when a child, partner or other household member has a separate profile but uses a shared console. Their progress and achievements are recorded to their own account while the license comes from the purchasing account’s Home Xbox designation. They should not need to launch the game from the purchaser’s profile merely to validate ownership.
Home-console sharing applies to anyone else who signs in to that designated console, not only one preselected family member. That makes the choice of hardware important: every profile using that Xbox may be able to use the eligible shared catalog, while the purchasing account remains the owner.
On a different Xbox
A console that is not the purchasing account’s Home Xbox uses roaming access. For another profile to use the purchaser’s digital games or durable content there, the purchasing account must be signed in and connected to Xbox services. If the purchaser signs out, those other users’ roaming licenses become unusable on that console.
The two situations are therefore not interchangeable: Home-console access is attached to the designated hardware, while access on another console depends on the purchaser’s active sign-in and online connection. The purchaser can still play on the non-Home Xbox with the purchasing account; the restriction concerns other profiles trying to use that account’s roaming licenses.
Home Xbox versus another console
| Access condition | Purchasing account’s Home Xbox | Any other Xbox |
|---|---|---|
| Must the purchaser stay signed in while another profile plays eligible shared games? | No. Other profiles can use qualifying content under the Home-console license. | Yes. The purchaser must remain signed in. |
| Must the purchaser be connected to Xbox services for another profile’s access? | No such sign-in or connection condition is stated for Home-console sharing. | Yes. The purchaser must be signed in and connected for roaming access. |
| What happens when the purchaser signs out? | Eligible shared content remains available to other profiles under the Home-console policy. | Other profiles’ roaming licenses become unusable. |
| Which console should be chosen for a household member? | The console that person will use as the shared household machine. | A console where the purchaser is present and can maintain the required sign-in and connection. |
These conditions come from Microsoft’s Xbox sharing model. They describe licensing behavior, not a promise that every game or add-on has identical content rules. A family may therefore keep one console as the Home Xbox for independent household play and use a second console with the purchaser signed in when traveling or playing elsewhere.
What can and cannot be shared
| Content type | Home Xbox behavior | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Eligible digital games | Other profiles on the designated Home Xbox can use them. | The title must support the platform’s shared licensing access. |
| Durable add-ons | Shared with other profiles on the Home Xbox when the game honors the shared license. | Examples include expansions and map packs. |
| Subscription-enabled content | Microsoft gives Xbox Game Pass as an example of content that can be shared on a Home Xbox. | Do not assume every subscription tier, catalog title or benefit shares identically; check the current terms for the specific entitlement. |
| Consumable add-ons | Not shared between profiles. | Ownership is tied to the account that bought the item. |
Digital games
A qualifying digital game purchased by the account that set the Home Xbox can be launched by another profile on that console. The second profile does not become the owner; it is using the Home-console license. If the title is not eligible for shared access or the account no longer has the entitlement, the second profile will not gain access merely because the console is designated. A disc-based license is also different: inserting a disc supplies the license for that session, but it is not a digital purchase to share through this setting.
Durable downloadable content
Microsoft’s policy includes durable add-ons. These are persistent game components such as an expansion or map pack rather than a one-time item consumed during play. The base game and add-on can still have separate licensing behavior, so test the family member’s profile in the game after installation rather than assuming every piece of downloadable content is available.

Subscription-enabled content
Microsoft explicitly names Xbox Game Pass as an example of subscription-enabled content that may be shared on a Home Xbox. That example does not establish that every Game Pass plan, catalog game, cloud feature or other subscription benefit is available to every profile. Plan terms and catalog availability can change, so verify the particular title or benefit when it matters. If a subscription expires or a game leaves its catalog, the Home Xbox setting cannot create a new entitlement.
Consumables
Consumable ownership is entirely per account and is not shared. Typical examples are in-game currency, limited-use boosts and one-time resource allotments. If the purchasing account buys currency or another consumable, another profile should not expect to see or spend it simply because both profiles use the same Home Xbox. Buying a durable expansion instead of currency does not guarantee access if the specific game applies a separate restriction, so check in-game availability.
How the family member should use the shared console
- Sign in to the family member’s own profile. Avoid launching the game from the purchasing account if the goal is to keep saves and achievements on the family member’s account.
- Open the game from the library or installed-games list. The Home Xbox designation supplies the eligible license; it does not merge the two profiles.
- Check the game’s downloadable content. Durable expansions and map packs may be available, while consumables remain account-bound.
- Play while the purchaser is signed out if desired. On the designated Home Xbox, qualifying shared content does not require the purchaser to remain signed in.
If a title shows a lock icon, first verify the console designation and the purchasing account’s entitlement before reinstalling. A reinstall can fix a missing local installation, but it cannot make an expired subscription or excluded consumable shareable.
If the family member later uses a different Xbox, the Home-console benefit does not follow that hardware. Their access there depends on the purchasing account being signed in and connected.
Troubleshoot the most common access failures
The family member sees a purchase prompt
- Confirm that the console being used is the one designated through Settings > Personalization > My home Xbox by the purchasing account.
- Check that the purchasing account, rather than the family member’s account, made the designation.
- Verify that the title is a digital entitlement owned by that account and not a physical-disc license.
- Check whether the item is a consumable, which is excluded even when the console is correctly designated.
- Sign out of the family member’s profile and back in after correcting the setting, then try the game again.
The game works only while the purchaser is signed in
That behavior indicates you may be using a non-Home Xbox. On another console, the purchaser must be signed in and connected for other users’ roaming access. If the intention is to let the family member play independently, designate the family member’s console as the purchasing account’s Home Xbox.
Recommended Free Tools
The base game works but an add-on does not
Determine whether the missing item is durable or consumable. Expansions and map packs are examples of durable content that can be shared when the platform license permits it. Currency, limited-use boosts and one-time resources are consumables and remain tied to the purchasing account. Also confirm that the add-on belongs to the installed edition or region of the base game and that it has finished installing.
A subscription title is unavailable
Home Xbox sharing can include subscription-enabled content, but Microsoft’s example does not guarantee every plan or benefit. Confirm that the purchasing account’s subscription is active and that the specific title is included under the current plan. If the title is no longer part of the catalog or the entitlement has expired, Home Xbox designation cannot restore it.

Console updates can change labels and navigation. Start in Settings, open Personalization, and look for the Home Xbox control. If you still cannot locate it, consult Microsoft’s current My home Xbox support page rather than relying on an old screenshot or third-party walkthrough.

Choose the console that needs independent access
There is one Home Xbox designation for the purchasing account’s sharing arrangement at a time. Put it on the console where another household member needs to play without the purchaser’s active sign-in. A console used mainly by the purchaser can remain a non-Home console; the purchaser’s own account can use its entitlements there while signed in and connected.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteBecause the designation follows the purchasing account, changing which household console is Home changes where other profiles receive independent access. Decide based on the family’s normal play location, not on which console is nearest during setup. Microsoft’s accessible policy does not establish a particular annual switching allowance, so do not rely on older guides that quote one without checking current Xbox guidance.
Sharing is not account merging
The family member should continue using a separate profile. Home Xbox shares eligible licenses on the designated hardware; it does not combine purchases, move ownership, merge saves or transfer consumables. Never give the purchasing account’s password to make this work; the documented setup is to designate the console, then let the other person sign in with their own profile.
Sharing is not universal access
Home Xbox does not make every item attached to the purchasing account available to every profile. The documented categories are eligible digital games, durable add-ons and certain subscription-enabled content. Consumables are excluded, and individual titles can apply their own platform licensing rules.
Keep subscription terms in view
Subscription catalogs, plans and benefits can change independently of the console setting. Treat Game Pass as Microsoft’s documented example, not as proof that all subscription features share in the same way. Check the current plan description when a particular multiplayer, cloud or catalog feature is essential.
When to use Home Xbox sharing
- Use it when: a family member regularly plays on a particular household Xbox and needs access from their own profile without the purchaser staying signed in.
- Use a non-Home setup when: another person is temporarily using a different console and the purchaser can remain signed in and connected throughout access.
- Do not rely on it for: transferring ownership, sharing account-bound currency, or guaranteeing every subscription benefit and add-on.
The practical decision is therefore based on hardware location and the type of entitlement, not on whether two people are members of the same family. Before changing the setting, list the games and add-ons the family member actually needs and identify which are digital, durable or consumable; that quick check prevents most mistaken expectations.

Policy source and menu-change caveat
Microsoft’s developer documentation states the Home-console rule and the distinction between Home and roaming licenses, but console interfaces can be revised. The consumer support page may render differently by region, account state or browser. If the exact labels on your Xbox differ, use the current console settings and Microsoft support guidance to locate the Home Xbox control. Do not infer a specific switching limit or an unlisted subscription benefit from older guides; those details are not established by the cited policy.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can my child play my digital Xbox games on their own account?
Yes, when the child’s console is designated as the purchasing account’s Home Xbox and the game is an eligible digital entitlement. The child should use a separate profile; the purchasing account does not need to stay signed in on that Home Xbox.
Does the purchaser have to stay online?
Not for other profiles using eligible content on the designated Home Xbox under Microsoft’s Home-console policy. On any other Xbox, the purchaser must remain signed in and connected to Xbox services for roaming access.

Microsoft names Xbox Game Pass as an example of subscription-enabled content that may be shared on a Home Xbox. Check the current plan, catalog and benefit terms for the specific game or feature.
Can I share in-game currency or boosts?
No. Consumable add-ons, including currency, limited-use boosts and one-time resources, remain tied to the account that purchased them.
Will sharing move my saves or ownership to the family member?
No. Home Xbox shares an eligible console license on one console. It does not merge accounts, transfer ownership or move saves; the family member should play from their own profile.
What if the game works only when I am signed in?
The console is likely not the purchasing account’s Home Xbox, or the other profile is trying to use roaming access. Recheck Settings > Personalization > My home Xbox while signed in as the purchaser.
