How to Share Digital Nintendo Switch Games With a Family Member

Nintendo’s current sharing system is built around Virtual Game Cards. If a digital game is loaded on a console, every user on that console can play it, including offline. To let a family member use the game on a different console, lend the virtual game card to a member of the same Nintendo Account family group.

A loan lasts up to 14 days. During that period, the lender cannot play that lent copy, but the borrower can return it early and the lender can retrieve it early. The transaction requires both consoles to be nearby and connected to the internet; once the card is loaded, the game itself can be played offline.

How Nintendo digital-game sharing works

Virtual Game Cards separate two situations that are often confused: sharing on one console and lending to another console.

Sharing on the same console

When your virtual game card is loaded on a console, the game behaves much like a physical game card inserted into that system. All user accounts on that console can start the game, not just the Nintendo Account that bought it. After the card has been loaded, the game can run without an internet connection.

  • Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
  • GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play

This is the straightforward arrangement for a household that uses one Switch. A parent can buy a digital game, load its virtual game card on the family console, and a child’s separate user profile can play it there. The child does not need the purchaser’s password.

Lending to a separate console

For two people using different consoles, the owner lends the virtual game card to a family-group member. The borrower receives a temporary copy on the target console and can download it if necessary. The standard loan period is 14 days, unless the borrower returns the card sooner.

Lending is not a permanent transfer and it is not a way to create a second permanent license. While the card is lent, the owner cannot use that game on the owner’s console. The card returns automatically when the 14-day period ends, or either person can end the loan earlier.

What you need before lending a game

  • The accounts must be in the same Nintendo Account family group. Being relatives, using the same email domain, or owning consoles in the same home is not enough.
  • The borrower’s Nintendo Account must be linked to a user on the target console. A family-group member who has never been added as a user on that Switch will not appear as an eligible recipient.
  • Both consoles must be close to each other for the transaction. Local wireless proximity is part of the lending process.
  • Both consoles must be connected to the internet while lending or accepting the card. Internet communication is needed to authorize the transfer even though the downloaded game can later work offline.
  • The title must support virtual-game-card lending. Nintendo excludes some games, so check the title’s support status before promising that a particular purchase can be lent.
  • The borrower needs enough storage to download the game if it is not already on the console. A compatible microSD card can provide additional storage, but storage does not change Nintendo’s lending rules.

A Nintendo Switch Online subscription is not listed as a requirement for virtual-game-card lending. The required connection is an internet connection for the lending transaction. Nintendo Switch Online may be relevant to a game’s separate online multiplayer features, but it does not turn a digital purchase into a family-wide license.

Step-by-step: lend a digital game to a family member

  1. Confirm family-group membership. Check that the purchasing account and the borrower’s account belong to the same Nintendo Account family group.
  2. Link the borrower on the target console. On the console that will receive the game, add a user linked to the borrower’s Nintendo Account. The account must be attached to a user profile on that specific system.
  3. Bring the consoles together. Place the owner’s console and the borrower’s console near each other and connect both to the internet. Do not begin the lending transaction with one console offline or in another location.
  4. Open Virtual Game Cards on the owner’s console. From the HOME Menu, open Virtual Game Cards, select the owner’s user, and choose the game to be lent.
  5. Choose the lending command. Select Lend to Family Group Member. Nintendo will display eligible family-group members whose accounts are linked to users on a target console.
  6. Select the borrower. Choose the family member who will use the game. If the person is missing from the list, stop and resolve the account or console-linking issue rather than trying to lend to a different profile.
  7. Accept the card on the borrower’s console. On the target console, accept or borrow the virtual game card when prompted. If the game is not installed, start its download after the card is accepted.
  8. Wait for the card to finish loading. The game is ready when the download and loading process completes. The borrower can then launch it from the HOME Menu and, after loading, play without remaining online.

The loan clock begins with the lending transaction. The borrower can return the card before 14 days, and the owner can retrieve it early. Either action ends the borrower’s access to that lent card and makes it available to the owner again.

What happens to access, DLC and save data

The owner’s access

The lender loses access to the lent copy for the duration of the loan. This is intentional, not a sign that the purchase disappeared from the account. When the borrower returns the card, when the 14-day period expires, or when the owner retrieves it, the owner can use the card again.

The borrower’s access

The borrower has temporary use, not ownership. A borrowed card can be played for up to 14 days, subject to the title’s support for virtual-game-card lending. Ending the loan early removes the borrower’s ability to launch that borrowed copy.

Downloadable content

Downloadable content purchased with the game is lent with the virtual game card. A borrower should therefore receive the game and its associated DLC as part of the same lending arrangement, provided the title and content are supported by Nintendo’s system.

Save data

Save data stays on the borrower’s console after the card is returned. If the same game is borrowed again later, that saved progress can still be used. The saved data does not become the owner’s data and does not convert the temporary loan into a purchase.

Same-console sharing versus separate-console lending

Situation How access is granted Who can play Internet requirement after setup Duration
One console used by several household members Load the virtual game card on that console All users on the console Not required for the loaded card Continues while the card remains loaded
A family member’s separate console Lend the virtual game card to a family-group member The borrower on the target console Not required for play after loading Up to 14 days, unless returned or retrieved earlier
Another console without the card loaded Use the purchasing account’s online license The purchasing account only Required whenever that online license is used While the purchasing account is authorized online

This distinction explains why simply adding another user, signing in on another Switch, or sharing a password does not create general family access. The console-wide benefit comes from a loaded virtual game card. The separate-console option is a controlled, time-limited loan. An online license on a console without the loaded card is tied to the purchasing account and does not make the purchase playable by every user on that system.

How many consoles and loans are allowed?

Nintendo’s account rules put several limits around virtual game cards and lending:

Limit What it means in practice
Up to two consoles can load an account’s virtual game cards The account’s cards can be loaded on two Switch-family consoles. Users on those consoles can play the loaded cards.
Up to three cards can be lent at once The lender may have three virtual game-card loans active simultaneously, subject to each title’s eligibility.
One borrowed game per borrower A borrower cannot hold multiple borrowed virtual game cards at the same time.
One lent card per target console A console cannot receive more than one virtual game card through lending, even if several family members use that console.
Fourteen-day standard loan Each loan ends automatically after 14 days unless the borrower returns it or the owner retrieves it sooner.

These limits apply to the virtual-game-card system, not to a family’s informal agreement about who should play first. If several children share one target console, the one-card-per-console rule means lending another game to a different child on that same system will not create a second simultaneous borrowed card.

Why a family member may not appear or a loan may fail

The borrower is missing from the lending list

There are two primary causes: the borrower’s Nintendo Account is not in the lender’s family group, or the borrower’s account is not linked to a user on the target console. Verify both conditions. A person can belong to the right family group and still be absent until that account is linked to a user profile on the other Switch.

The consoles are too far apart or one is offline

Move both consoles close together and confirm that each has internet access before repeating the lending command. The transaction uses both local wireless proximity and internet communication. A game that already finished downloading can be played offline later, but that offline capability does not remove the connection requirement for lending.

The target console has users from multiple family groups

Nintendo does not allow the card to be borrowed by a target console whose users belong to multiple Nintendo Account family groups. Check the account arrangement on that console. The recipient must be an eligible member of the lender’s family group, and the console’s user setup must satisfy Nintendo’s family-group rule.

The title does not support lending

Some games do not support virtual-game-card lending. If the lending command is unavailable for one title but works for another, the title’s support status is the likely explanation. Do not assume that every digital purchase has identical sharing rights; check Nintendo’s support information for that specific game.

The owner cannot start the game after lending

This is expected while the loan is active. The owner’s access to that lent copy is suspended until the borrower returns the card, the 14-day period ends, or the owner retrieves it. Starting a second download or signing in with another local user does not bypass the active loan.

The borrower cannot launch the game after downloading it

Confirm that the virtual game card is still assigned to the borrower’s console and that the loan has not expired or been retrieved. If the loan ended, the borrower’s save data should remain on the console, but the game will need to be borrowed again or purchased for that account to regain access.

Switch and Switch 2 compatibility

Nintendo supports lending compatible virtual game cards between Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch consoles. Compatibility depends on the specific game and the system combination, so a feature that works between two original Switch consoles is not automatically guaranteed across generations.

Some Switch 2-to-Switch arrangements are directional: the direction in which a card can move may differ from the reverse direction. Before arranging a loan, check Nintendo’s compatibility status for the title and the exact pair of consoles. Treat “Switch” and “Switch 2” as separate compatibility cases rather than assuming that every digital game supports both.

Practical examples

Parent and child on one Switch

The parent loads the purchased virtual game card on the household Switch. The child selects the game from the child’s own user profile and can play offline. No loan is needed because both users are on the same console.

Parent and child on two consoles

The accounts join the same Nintendo Account family group, the child’s account is linked to a user on the child’s Switch, and both consoles are brought together online. The parent lends the card through Virtual Game Cards. The child downloads and plays for up to 14 days; the parent cannot use that lent copy until it returns.

Two children sharing one secondary console

Even if both children belong to the family group, only one virtual game card can be lent to that target console at a time. The family must return the first card before lending a different card to the same system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A child visits another home

Being in the same family group is necessary, but the initial lending transaction still requires the two consoles to be near each other and connected to the internet. A remote hand-off over the internet alone is not the supported procedure.

What this system does not do

  • It does not permanently give the borrower ownership of the game.
  • It does not let the owner and borrower use the same lent card independently during the loan.
  • It does not make every user on a separate console eligible to play through the purchasing account’s online license.
  • It does not eliminate title-specific restrictions or cross-generation compatibility rules.
  • It does not copy save data between consoles; it leaves the borrower’s save data on the borrower’s system.

A simple decision guide

  1. Are both players using one console? Load the virtual game card there. All users on that console can play, including offline.
  2. Are the players using separate consoles temporarily? Use Virtual Game Card lending if both accounts are in the same family group and the title supports lending.
  3. Does the borrower need the game beyond 14 days? A loan is not suitable as a permanent solution. The borrower needs continued access through another valid license arrangement.
  4. Are the consoles different generations? Verify the title’s Switch/Switch 2 compatibility and any directional restrictions before lending.
  5. Is the game missing from the lending list? Check family-group membership, the linked user on the target console, proximity, internet access, and title eligibility in that order.
