Yes—you can lend a physical PS4 or PS5 game by handing the disc to someone with a compatible console and disc drive. The game installs from that disc, but PlayStation requires the disc to remain inserted every time the game is played. That means one physical copy cannot be used on two consoles at once.
You can also sell a used disc, but resale rules depend on your country or region. Sony’s October 2020 software terms for Europe, the Middle East, Africa, India, Russia and Oceania prohibit resale unless Sony and, where applicable, the publisher authorize it. Those terms do not automatically establish the rule everywhere. Check the terms and consumer law that apply where you live, and do not treat a digital purchase as equivalent to a boxed game.

- Lending: Give the physical disc to the other player. They install the game and leave the disc in their console for every play session.
- Simultaneous play: The owner cannot play that same copy while the disc is with the borrower, because the disc is required in the console.

How lending a physical PlayStation game works
What the borrower needs
The borrower needs a console that can read the disc and supports that particular title. For a PS4 or PS5 disc, that normally means a console with an optical disc drive. A PS5 Digital Edition cannot use a PS4 or PS5 game disc because it has no usable disc drive. Console generation and title compatibility matter as well: a game that runs on PS4 is not automatically guaranteed to run on PS5.

Exact lending procedure
- Identify the edition. Check whether the case contains a PS4 disc, a PS5 disc or a two-disc installation set. Confirm the borrower’s console has a disc drive and is compatible with that title.
- Hand over the disc. The physical disc is the item being shared. Do not share your account password as a substitute.
- Insert the disc and install. PlayStation installs the game data from the disc to the console’s storage. Some releases ask you to select add-ons or other installation options.
- Leave the disc inserted. PlayStation’s disc-game guidance says to keep the disc inserted every time you play. Installation does not turn the disc into a second digital license.
- Return the disc when finished. The borrower’s installed data may remain on their console, but they cannot start the disc-based game without the required disc.
Some games use two discs. The data disc is used for installation; after that, the play disc is the one that must be inserted for subsequent sessions. The borrower should follow the labels and on-screen prompts rather than assuming either disc can be used interchangeably.
Why one disc cannot support two players at once
The practical limit is physical: one disc can be inserted in only one console at a time. Because the console checks for the disc at each play session, copying the installed files to another console does not create a second playable copy. Do not attempt to bypass that check or replace it with account-credential sharing.
Can you share PS4 discs with a PS5?
Many PS4 games are backward compatible with PS5, but PlayStation lists exceptions, errors and possible unexpected behavior. Compatibility is a property of the individual title and console combination, not a blanket guarantee for every PS4 release.

Check the exact PS5 model
“PS5” describes several hardware configurations. Before buying or lending a PS4 disc for PS5 use, verify that the recipient has the disc-drive model, not a Digital Edition. If the recipient owns a Digital Edition that supports an optional, model-specific disc drive, confirm compatibility for that exact hardware before purchasing an accessory; a generic assumption is not enough.

Check the title, not just the generation
Use PlayStation’s current compatibility information for the exact game. A title may run with limitations, display an error or behave unexpectedly even when it is broadly described as a PS4 game that works on PS5. Keep the game’s region, edition and disc type in mind when checking a listing or arranging a loan.
Physical-disc lending versus PS5 Console Sharing and Offline Play
These are different mechanisms and solve different problems. Physical lending moves the disc from one person to another. Console Sharing and Offline Play gives other users on an enabled PS5 access to games and media that the account holder purchased and downloaded through that account, even when the console is offline. Some PlayStation Plus benefits, including online multiplayer, can also be available to users on the enabled console under PlayStation’s feature rules.

Enabling Console Sharing does not make a disc-based game digital. If the game was supplied on a disc, the disc requirement remains.
Can the owner and borrower play the same physical game simultaneously?
No. The borrower can play while holding the disc, but the owner cannot use that same copy at the same time. The installed data on either console does not change this requirement. A second player needs their own authorized copy, whether physical or digital, to play independently.

This is different from the account-based console-sharing feature, which concerns downloaded purchases on an enabled PS5. It does not create simultaneous access to one physical disc.
What you need to know before reselling a used PlayStation disc
A physical sale is not a digital-account transfer
A boxed game and a PlayStation Store purchase are treated differently in the US PlayStation Terms of Service. The US terms describe Store purchases as personal licenses for private, non-commercial use and say the license is not transferable unless applicable law requires otherwise. They separately identify physical goods, including boxed games, as being covered by physical-goods purchase terms.
That distinction explains why selling or handing over a disc is not the same thing as selling a PlayStation account or transferring a digital license. It does not, by itself, answer every question about a physical-disc resale in every US state or every other country.

Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Software Usage Terms document labeled October 2020 covers Europe, the Middle East, Africa, India, Russia and Oceania. Section 7.1 states: “You must not resell either Disc-based Software or Digital Software, unless expressly authorised by us and, if the publisher is another company, additionally by the publisher.”

That sentence has a defined geographic scope and date. It should not be presented as a universal rule for the United States, Canada, Latin America or any other region without checking the applicable terms. Contract language can also interact with local consumer, property and exhaustion rules. If the legal consequence matters—especially for a business that regularly resells games—obtain advice based on the jurisdiction where the transaction occurs.
A practical resale decision
- Occasional private sale: Check the terms and consumer law for your location before listing the disc. Describe the item as a physical disc and do not promise rights that belong to an account or publisher.
- Regular commercial resale: Get jurisdiction-specific legal advice and keep records of the title, edition, condition and transaction.
- Digital purchase: Do not list a PlayStation account or claim to transfer a Store license as though it were a used disc. The US terms characterize the digital purchase as a personal license.
- Cross-border transaction: Confirm which region’s terms and sale laws apply. A clause written for one group of territories is not automatically controlling elsewhere.
How to prepare a disc for lending or sale
For the person lending the game
- Confirm the recipient’s console model and whether it has a disc drive.
- Check the title’s current PS4-on-PS5 compatibility information if the recipient uses a PS5.
- Tell the recipient whether the package contains one disc or a data-disc/play-disc pair.
- Explain that installation uses console storage and that the disc must remain inserted for every play session.
- Agree when and how the disc will be returned. The installed files do not replace the physical handoff.
- Keep your account password, two-factor authentication codes and payment details private.
For the person buying a used game
- Ask whether the listing is for a PS4 disc or a PS5 disc and whether the case matches the disc.
- Confirm that your console has a working disc drive. A PS5 Digital Edition cannot use the disc.
- Verify compatibility if you intend to play a PS4 title on PS5; “PS4” on the box is not a universal guarantee.
- Check that the disc is the correct data or play disc when a release contains two discs.
- Expect to install the game and keep the disc inserted whenever you play.
- Do not pay for an account, password or supposed digital entitlement when you are trying to buy a physical copy.
Describe the listing accurately
State the console generation, disc count, edition, region information shown on the packaging, visible condition and whether original inserts are included. Do not claim that a title works on every PS5 when compatibility is title-specific, and do not describe a disc as a digital license.

The game installed but will not start without the disc
That behavior is expected for a disc-based release. Reinsert the required disc and leave it in the console for the session. Installation stores game data; it does not remove the ownership check tied to the physical copy.
A PS4 disc does not work on the recipient’s PS5
First verify that the PS5 is a disc-drive model. A Digital Edition cannot read the disc. Next check PlayStation’s current compatibility information for the exact title, because many—but not all—PS4 games work on PS5 and some may show errors or unexpected behavior.

The package has two discs and installation stops
Check the labels. The data disc is used for installation, while the play disc is used afterward. Follow the console’s prompt and keep the play disc inserted once installation is complete.
The borrower wants to play after returning the disc
They will need the disc again for a disc-based game. Leaving installed data on the console does not grant a second playable license, and copying files is not a supported substitute.
Someone suggests sharing an account instead
Do not hand over account credentials to simulate a disc loan. Physical lending and PS5 Console Sharing and Offline Play are separate features with different requirements. Use the documented console-sharing feature only for downloaded purchases and follow PlayStation’s account rules.

Lend when access is temporary
Lending is suitable when a friend or family member needs to play your copy for a limited period and has compatible hardware. The trade-off is exclusive possession during the loan: you cannot use that disc until it comes back.
Sell when you no longer need the physical copy
A sale can transfer possession of the boxed item, but you must check the legal and contractual rules in your region first. Give the buyer an accurate description of the disc and its compatibility; do not include account credentials or represent the transaction as a digital-license transfer.
Use Console Sharing for downloaded purchases
Use PS5 Console Sharing and Offline Play when the goal is to let users of one enabled PS5 access games and media purchased and downloaded through the account holder. It is not the correct method for lending a disc, making a PS5 Digital Edition read a disc or enabling two consoles to use one physical copy.
