How to share an Ask Maps conversation and keep the places easy to find

Google Maps currently treats an Ask Maps conversation and the places it recommends as two separate things. You can reopen an old conversation from Ask Maps History, but Google’s published instructions do not document a general button for sending the complete chat transcript. The dependable workflow is to save useful places to a clearly named Maps list, then share that list—or share a few selected places directly from Android.

This approach keeps the locations available after the chat is closed, lets you control who can see or edit them, and avoids implying that a list link contains the original AI conversation.

What you can share from Ask Maps

There are three different actions, and choosing the right one prevents most confusion:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Reopen the conversation: Ask Maps History loads a previous thread for you. It is a retrieval feature, not a documented public sharing link.
  • Share a few places: On Android, entries in Your places can be selected and sent to another app.
  • Share a collection: A Google Maps list can be shared with a view link, and the owner can invite people to edit it.

Google’s Android and computer help pages explain how to find Ask Maps conversations and how to share saved lists, but they do not describe a general “share entire conversation” control. Do not tell recipients that a list link carries the chat text; it carries the saved places and the permissions attached to that list.

For a practical example, ask Maps for ideas for “Saturday in central Boston,” check the answers, save the worthwhile restaurants and attractions to a list named Saturday in central Boston, and send the list link to your group. Anyone who needs the reasoning or wording from the original chat can receive screenshots or copied text separately, while the list remains the working map of places.

How do I find an old Ask Maps chat?

Android

  1. Open the Google Maps mobile app.
  2. Tap Ask Maps below the search bar.
  3. Open History.
  4. Tap the conversation you want to reopen.

These are the steps in Google’s Ask questions in Google Maps — Android instructions. History loads the prior thread in your account; it does not automatically create a shareable URL for another person.

Computer

  1. Open Google Maps in a browser.
  2. Choose Menu.
  3. Select Ask Maps, then History.
  4. Select the conversation.

The computer workflow is documented in Google’s Ask questions in Google Maps — Computer help. If you need to show someone what the chat said, use your organization’s approved method for sharing text or screenshots, and separately share the saved places through Maps.

How to turn recommendations into a shareable list

1. Decide what is worth keeping

Review the Ask Maps answer rather than saving every suggestion automatically. Keep places that meet your actual constraints—location, opening hours, accessibility, price range, dietary needs, or a particular date. AI-generated answers can contain mistakes, so verify consequential details before you rely on a recommendation.

2. Save each place to a named list

In Google Maps, open a place’s listing and use the Save control to add it to a new or existing list. Give the list a descriptive name that still makes sense weeks later, such as Saturday in central Boston, Tokyo conference lunches, or Accessible beaches near Brighton. A meaningful name is more useful than leaving locations scattered across generic favorites.

Google’s computer guidance for lists and saved places is available in Create a list of places — Computer and Save favorite places — Computer. The documented capacity for a saved list is up to 3,000 entries. That is an operational limit, not a recommendation to put unrelated trips or projects into one enormous list.

3. Add enough context for other people

Use the list description or place notes, where available, to record why an item was saved: “vegetarian tasting menu,” “near the north entrance,” or “backup option if rain.” Keep sensitive information out of a broadly shared list. The list is a location collection, not a secure document for private addresses or access codes.

How to share a Google Maps list

Send a view link

  1. Open the list in Google Maps on a computer.
  2. Use the list’s sharing control and choose the option to Send a link to view.
  3. Copy the generated link into your message, email, or group chat.

Google’s computer list instructions say a shared list can be found by anyone who has the link. That makes the link convenient for a travel group, but it also means the link should be treated as transferable: a recipient can forward it to someone else.

Invite editors when the group needs to maintain the list

A view link does not, by itself, grant editing rights. If friends or colleagues need to add, remove, or rearrange places, use the list’s collaborator or invite-editors control and add them explicitly. Confirm who has edit access before distributing the link, particularly for a work project or a plan involving many contributors.

The list workflow is described in Google Maps Help’s list guide. Interface labels can vary slightly by account and device, but the distinction remains: viewing through a link and editing as an invited collaborator are separate permissions.

How do I share places directly from Google Maps?

Android: send several saved places at once

  1. Open Google Maps and go to Your places.
  2. Open the list containing the saved entries.
  3. Select one or more places.
  4. Tap Share.
  5. Choose the app or contact you want to use.

Google documents this selected-place workflow in Find your places & lists in the You tab — Android. It is efficient for a handful of locations when the recipient only needs individual place links. For an ongoing itinerary, a named list is easier to revisit because the collection remains together and can be updated.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When direct sharing is the better choice

  • You have only two or three places and do not need a persistent collection.
  • The recipient should receive individual listings rather than access to a broader trip or project list.
  • You want to send the places through a messaging app immediately from your phone.

When a list is the better choice

  • The group will revisit the recommendations over several days.
  • People need to see the whole set in one map view.
  • New locations may be added later.
  • You need to distinguish view-only access from invited editing.

Which sharing method should you use?

Goal Best method What the recipient gets Important limitation
Find your previous Ask Maps exchange Ask Maps History You reopen the thread in your own Maps account Google’s cited instructions do not document a general public share link for the full conversation
Send a few recommendations from Android Your places > select entries > Share Individual place links through the chosen app Less convenient for a large or changing collection
Give a group a stable collection Share a named list with a view link Everyone with the link can find the list The link does not include the Ask Maps transcript and does not automatically make recipients editors
Let teammates maintain the collection Invite collaborators to the list Selected people can edit, subject to the list’s controls Review the editor list before sharing sensitive or work-related locations

Will people see my saved places?

Not by default. Google describes saved places as private to the owner until the owner shares a list. People do not gain access to all of your saved locations merely because you sent one list or one place.

Before sending a link, open the list’s visibility and sharing controls. Check that you are sharing the intended list, decide whether it should be viewable by anyone with the link, and verify whether any collaborators have edit access. If the list contains home addresses, medical locations, children’s activities, or another sensitive category, consider sending individual places to specific people instead of creating a broadly discoverable link.

Remember that a recipient who can view a shared list may be able to forward its link. Remove places that should not travel beyond the original audience, and stop sharing the list when the project or trip is over if continued access is no longer appropriate.

How to keep an Ask Maps plan easy to use

Use one list per purpose

Separate an itinerary, a restaurant shortlist, and a long-term favorites collection. Focused lists are easier to scan and reduce accidental disclosure when you share one project with a group.

Use a naming convention

Include the occasion and, when useful, the area or date: Lisbon—team dinner—May 2026 is clearer than Ideas. If the plan changes, update the name or description rather than creating several near-duplicates.

Keep a backup option

Ask Maps may suggest a place that is closed, fully booked, or unsuitable when you arrive. Save one or two alternatives and label them in the list so the group can make a quick decision without reopening the entire chat.

Verify details before a consequential decision

Google warns that “AI-powered answers can sometimes be incorrect.” Its Android help advises checking important information in more than one place and opening the linked sources. Confirm hours, temporary closures, admission rules, reservation requirements, accessibility, and other details in the current business listing or the relevant official source before traveling or spending money. See Google Maps Help’s Ask Maps guidance for that warning and verification advice.

Deleting a conversation is not the same as deleting saved places

Delete an Ask Maps conversation

Ask Maps History provides a deletion action for a conversation. Google’s instructions describe deleting the full conversation, not removing just one selected message or answer. If you need to retain part of the wording, copy the useful text or save the associated places before deleting the thread.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Manage Maps activity separately

Maps history and AI-personalization settings are separate controls. Google says Ask Maps conversations may be included in Maps activity when history is enabled, and that AI personalization may use past conversations and saved lists or labels where those features are available and enabled. Manage those settings in your Google account rather than assuming that deleting one chat changes every related activity record.

Most importantly, deleting Maps history does not erase saved lists or labels. A conversation can disappear while the places you saved remain, and removing a saved list is a separate action. Google explains these distinctions in Manage your Maps history — Computer and How AI-powered features use your data in Google Maps.

Troubleshooting common sharing problems

The History option is missing

  • Confirm that you opened Ask Maps itself, not the regular search field.
  • On Android, look below the search bar for Ask Maps; on desktop, use Menu > Ask Maps > History.
  • Check that you are signed in to the Google account that created the conversation.
  • Update or reload Maps if the interface is not displaying the current controls.

The recipient cannot open the list

  • Recheck that you sent the list’s view link, not a private editing URL or an individual place link.
  • Open the list’s sharing settings and confirm its visibility.
  • If the list is restricted, invite the recipient through the available collaborator controls.
  • Ask the recipient to open the link while signed in to the intended account if the list’s permissions require it.

The recipient can view but cannot edit

That is expected for a view link. Add the person as an invited editor through the list’s collaboration controls. Do not assume that forwarding the link changes permissions.

A recommendation is wrong or outdated

Check the current Maps listing and the business’s own current information. Remove or annotate the entry in your list, and keep an alternative nearby. Do not treat an AI answer as confirmation of hours, availability, pricing, safety, or eligibility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You cannot find a saved place after deleting a chat

Look in Your places and the relevant list. Google states that deleting Maps history does not delete saved lists or labels, so the saved location should be managed separately from the removed conversation.

Ask Maps availability and third-party actions

Some Ask Maps experiences can offer actions involving third-party services, such as ordering or booking. Google’s current help describes those features as subject to requirements including being at least 18 years old, availability in the United States, English-only availability, and use in the mobile app or Ask Maps web app. It also says users may complete a transaction on a third-party site. These conditions are separate from the basic History, saved-list, and sharing workflows, so do not assume that an action is available in every country, language, account, or device.

For the current eligibility and action details, consult Taking actions within Ask Maps with third-parties. Regardless of availability, the safest way to keep recommendations accessible to a group is still to verify them and save the useful locations in a Maps list.

A reliable workflow from question to shared map

  1. Ask Maps for recommendations and state your constraints clearly.
  2. Reopen the thread from History if you need to review the original answer.
  3. Verify important claims against current listings and linked sources.
  4. Save worthwhile places to a focused, descriptive list.
  5. For two or three places, select entries in Android’s Your places and tap Share.
  6. For a collection, use the list’s Send a link to view option.
  7. Invite named collaborators only when they need editing rights.
  8. Check visibility and remove sensitive locations before distributing the link.
  9. Manage chat deletion, Maps activity, saved lists, and AI-personalization controls separately.

This preserves the useful outcome of an Ask Maps session—the places—without confusing a private chat history with a shared map.
