Telegram gives you two different ways to send a location: a one-time location pin and Live Location. Use the one-time pin when someone only needs to know where you are now. Use Live Location only for an active journey or meetup, choose the intended chat or group, set the shortest useful duration, and stop it when you arrive. Closing Telegram does not necessarily stop Live Location.
Telegram location sharing in one sentence
A location sent in a Telegram chat is a point-in-time message. Live Location is an optional, ongoing feature that continues updating your position for the recipients you selected. Telegram says Live Location can remain visible even when the app is closed, for as long as the feature stays activated.

That distinction determines nearly every privacy decision. If a friend needs the entrance to a restaurant, send a static location. If a family member needs to follow your progress during a hike, use Live Location with a limited duration and a clearly chosen recipient.
Static location versus Live Location

Telegram’s privacy policy treats a location sent in a chat like other messages in cloud or secret chats. The cited policy does not establish a universal encryption claim for every location message, so do not assume that a normal location pin has the same properties as a secret-chat message simply because it contains coordinates.

Send a one-time location pin
For most meetups, a static pin reveals less than Live Location because it does not keep reporting movement. The broad workflow is the same on supported mobile clients, although button names and placement can change between Telegram releases.
- Open the one-to-one chat or group that should receive the location.
- Open the attachment or sharing menu and choose the location option.
- Select the command for sending your current location, rather than the command for sharing your live location.
- Check the map preview and the chat recipient before sending.
- Send the message. If the recipient needs another place, search for or select that place instead of exposing your current position.
A static pin is still visible to everyone who can read that chat. In a group, that can include more people than the person you are meeting. If the destination is sensitive, send it in a private chat or use a less precise landmark that is sufficient for the meeting.
Start Live Location with the smallest useful audience
Use Live Location only when the recipient needs movement updates. Telegram’s feature is activated inside a chat, so select the chat deliberately before turning it on.

- Open the specific private chat or group that should receive updates.
- Open the location-sharing control and choose Live Location, not a one-time current-location message.
- Review the available duration choices. Choose the shortest period that covers the trip or activity.
- Confirm that the chat or group shown is the intended audience.
- Start sharing and keep the active-sharing message visible long enough to recognize that the session is running.
Telegram’s labels can change by platform and version. The safest check is the wording that explicitly describes an ongoing or live share and the duration shown immediately before confirmation.
Choose a duration deliberately
Telegram’s original 2017 Live Location announcement documented choices of 15 minutes, 1 hour, and 8 hours, together with an interface control for stopping the share. Those historical choices should not be treated as a guaranteed complete list in the current app. In 2023, Telegram announced that users could add time to an existing shared location and could share indefinitely until turning it off.
Use a time-limited option for a normal journey. An indefinite share is appropriate only when you intentionally want the same people to keep tracking you and you have a plan to turn it off. Do not choose it merely because it is convenient; an indefinite session can outlast the event you had in mind.

- Short meetup: Pick a duration that covers walking or driving to the meeting point, with a small margin.
- Long trip: Choose a longer finite period only if the journey genuinely requires it, and add time later if Telegram offers that control.
- Ongoing family or team tracking: Use indefinite sharing only after confirming every recipient and deciding who will stop it.
Who receives a Live Location?
Live Location is shared in the chat where you enable it. A private chat limits the audience to that conversation. A group sends the live location to the members who can view messages in that group, subject to the group’s membership and permissions.

Before confirming, check the chat title, participant list, and whether you are in a group rather than a private conversation. If several people need the information but not the whole group, create or use a smaller private chat instead of broadcasting to a large group.
Telegram’s policy describes location visibility as limited to the users with whom you are sharing it; it is not a public broadcast by default. That does not make a group share private from other group members, so recipient selection remains important.
Can people see your location when Telegram is closed?
Yes, potentially. Telegram states that if you share Live Location in a chat, it can display your location to those recipients even when the app is closed, for as long as you keep the optional feature activated.
Closing the app, swiping it away, locking the phone, or switching to another app is therefore not the same as stopping Live Location. If the trip is over, use the stop-sharing control rather than relying on the app’s window disappearing.

Stop Live Location and verify that it ended
When coordination is finished, stop the active share from the Live Location message or sharing interface. Telegram’s original announcement describes an in-interface stop control, and its technical documentation represents a stopped state for a live geolocation session.
- Return to each chat where you started a Live Location share.
- Find the active location message or the chat’s current sharing status.
- Choose the control that explicitly stops or ends Live Location.
- Confirm the message no longer indicates an active share or ongoing updates.
- If you shared in more than one chat, check each chat separately.
Stopping one session does not automatically prove that another session in a different chat has ended. Make the final status check part of your arrival routine, especially after an indefinite share.
People Nearby is a separate exposure path
People Nearby is not the same feature as sending a location in a chat. Telegram’s policy says that enabling “Make Myself Visible” in People Nearby can display your location to the users with whom you are sharing it.

If you do not intend to appear to nearby Telegram users, inspect the People Nearby screen and make sure “Make Myself Visible” is not enabled. Turning off chat-based Live Location does not answer the separate question of whether People Nearby visibility remains active.
Telegram’s technical documentation also distinguishes looking up nearby users from advertising your own current location with an expiry. Merely looking for nearby users should not be described as automatically publishing your location; consumer-app screens and permissions can differ, so verify the visibility setting itself.
Location permissions and background updates
Live Location may require operating-system permission to obtain location updates while you move. Telegram’s iOS translation strings specifically describe background location access as needed to keep Live Location updated during sharing. That wording should not be generalized to every operating system or every Telegram version.

If Live Location stops updating, review the phone’s Telegram location permission and background-location setting, then review Telegram’s own active-share status. Permission settings explain whether updates can be collected; they are not a reliable substitute for the in-app stop control. Do not assume that revoking permission is the proper way to end an existing share.

- Check whether the operating system is restricting background activity or battery use.
- After changing a permission, return to the chat and verify whether the Live Location session is still shown as active.
What Telegram’s technical model means for ordinary users
Telegram’s Live Location API describes an optional accuracy radius, a validity period, a heading, and a stopped flag. These are technical representations of a live geolocation session, not promises that every consumer app version exposes each field as a separate setting.
The practical implications are simpler:
- The position can include an accuracy area rather than being mathematically exact.
- The session has an expiry or remains active until stopped, depending on the duration selected.
- The direction of travel may be represented when available, but you should not assume a heading control is present in your app.
- A stopped state is distinct from merely having the app closed.
Do not infer more precision, duration, or control than the current Telegram screen actually shows.
Privacy-safe choices for common situations
Meeting at a venue
Send a static pin for the entrance or meeting point. If the venue has several entrances, send the specific place that helps the other person arrive without revealing your route or home location.
Walking or driving to meet someone
Start Live Location in a private chat, choose a finite duration, and stop it when you arrive. If the person only needs an estimated arrival point, a static pin and a text message may be enough.
Sharing progress with a group
Confirm that every group member should see your movement. If only one or two people need updates, use a private chat instead of the larger group.
Family tracking during a long trip
Use a finite period that covers the journey when possible. If you choose indefinite sharing, tell recipients that it is intentional and set your own reminder to turn it off.
Posting a destination publicly
Do not use a group or channel with a broad audience merely because it is convenient. A static landmark or general area can communicate the meeting point without creating a live trail.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Choosing Live Location when a pin would do
Problem: You create an ongoing feed for a one-time meeting. Correction: Stop the live session and send a static location message if the recipient still needs the destination.
Assuming closing Telegram stops sharing
Problem: The app is no longer visible, but Telegram may continue displaying Live Location to the selected recipients. Correction: Reopen the relevant chat and use the explicit stop control.
Using an indefinite duration by accident
Problem: Sharing continues beyond the original event. Correction: Stop it immediately, then check every chat in which you may have started a session.
Sending to the wrong audience
Problem: A group receives a location intended for one person. Correction: Stop the share in that group and continue in the intended private chat. Assume group members could have seen the earlier message.
Forgetting People Nearby
Problem: You stopped a chat share but still appear through “Make Myself Visible.” Correction: Open People Nearby and disable that visibility option if it is enabled.

Problem: You revoke location access without confirming the Telegram session’s state. Correction: Use Telegram’s stop-sharing control and then verify the status. Permission behavior after revocation can vary by operating system and app version.
A quick pre-share and post-share checklist
Before sharing
- Do recipients need a single place or movement updates?
- Is the selected chat private, or will an entire group see the location?
- Is the duration finite and long enough for the task?
- Could a landmark or destination pin provide enough information without revealing your current position?
- Is People Nearby visibility intentionally enabled?
After the meetup or trip
- Return to each chat used for Live Location.
- Stop every active session explicitly.
- Confirm that the active-share wording or indicator has disappeared or changed to a stopped state.
- Check People Nearby separately if you enabled “Make Myself Visible.”
- Remember that recipients may retain or remember a location message they already viewed; stopping Live Location prevents further updates but cannot undo information already delivered.
The safest default
For a normal Telegram meetup, send a static location pin to the specific person or small chat that needs it. Switch to Live Location only when movement matters, select a finite duration, and stop the share from Telegram when the task ends. Treat app closure as irrelevant to stopping the feature, and check People Nearby separately. Those choices keep the information useful while limiting both the audience and the time window.
