People can open a Google Photos link without having a Google Account, but anyone who obtains the URL may be able to view and forward it.
What a screenshot link actually is
A screenshot link is a web address that points to an image stored by a sharing service. The recipient opens the address in a browser instead of receiving the image as an attachment. The link can be useful when a messaging app compresses images, when several people need the same file, or when you want one URL to paste into a ticket or document.
Most services treat the URL as a bearer credential: possession of the link may be enough to view the image. An unguessable address is not the same as access control. A recipient can forward it, post it elsewhere or save a copy.
Make a screenshot link with Google Photos
Android or iPhone
- Open Google Photos and locate the screenshot.
- Open the image and tap Share.
- Choose Create link. (The exact wording can vary by app version.)
- Wait for the link to be created, then choose your messaging, mail or notes app, or copy the URL.
Google’s instructions are documented in Google Photos Help. The link can be opened by people who do not use the Google Photos app or have a Google Account.

Computer
- Go to Google Photos in your browser and sign in.
- Select the screenshot.
- Click Share, then Create link.
- Copy the generated URL and paste it wherever the recipient needs it.
Use a single-photo link when you are sharing one screenshot. If you need to send several screenshots or keep adding images, create a shared album instead. Google Photos can also generate a QR code for an album; scanning it opens that album.

Privacy: who can open the link?
Assume the URL can be forwarded
Google describes shared links as unguessable, but also explains that people who receive them can share them with others. Do not put passwords, recovery codes, private messages, financial information or personal identifiers in a broadly accessible screenshot.
Remove sensitive data before sharing
- Crop away unrelated tabs, notifications and account names.
- Redact secrets with an opaque block rather than a translucent marker.
- Check the final exported image at full size before creating the link.
- Send the URL only through a channel appropriate for its sensitivity.
Turning sharing off prevents future access through that link, but it cannot delete files a recipient already downloaded, copied or photographed.

Stop sharing and reset an album link
Turn off link sharing
For shared albums, use Google Photos’ sharing controls to turn off link sharing and remove collaborators. Google’s guidance is available in How shared album controls give your photos more privacy. If link sharing remains enabled, removing one collaborator does not stop people who still possess the original URL.
Reset a compromised album URL
- Open the shared album’s sharing settings.
- Turn Link sharing off.
- Turn it on again only if you still need a public-style link.
- Distribute the newly generated URL and stop using the old one.
Google states that switching album link sharing off and on resets the URL. This does not retrieve copies already saved by viewers.
Share a screenshot generated from a website
If the screenshot does not exist yet, capture the page first. Browser tools can produce a file, but dynamic pages often show cookie banners, newsletter popups, chat widgets, bot checks or incomplete lazy-loaded content. Capture at the page state you actually intend to share, then upload the resulting image to a service such as Google Photos and create the link there.

Troubleshooting
There is no “Create link” option
Open the image itself rather than a selection view, confirm that Google Photos has finished backing it up, and update the app. Menu labels differ between platforms and versions.

The recipient sees an access or sign-in screen
Check the item’s sharing settings and create the link again. Test the URL in a private browser window while signed out. An album may have restricted collaboration or link settings even when another photo link works.
The screenshot exposes information you meant to hide
Delete the shared item or disable its link, create a redacted copy, and generate a new link. Assume the original may already have been saved.
The API output is blank or an error page

Can I make a screenshot link expire automatically?
Google Photos guidance covered here explains turning link sharing off and resetting album links, but it does not establish an automatic expiration timer. Use a host with an explicit expiration feature if you require one.
What should I send if the recipient is next to me?
Use Quick Share when a direct file transfer is sufficient. It avoids hosting a URL but is not suitable when the recipient needs a link they can open later.
