How to Share a Find My Tracker’s Location With Family

By Freedom251 Team · · 13 min read

To share an AirTag or compatible Find My item, open Find My on an iPhone, choose Items, select the tracker, tap the More button, and choose Add Person under Share AirTag or Share This Item. Enter the family member’s Apple Account, send the invitation, and have them accept it in Find My. The tracker then appears in the recipient’s Items list.

This shares the tagged object, not your own device location. The owner controls who can use the shared item, and Apple supports up to five borrowers in addition to the owner. The recipient must meet Apple’s account, iCloud Keychain and software requirements before the invitation can work.

Tracker sharing and personal location sharing are different

Find My has two separate sharing systems that are easy to confuse:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
What you share Where you set it up Who controls access
An AirTag or compatible item’s location Find My > Items The tracker’s owner
A family member’s own device location Settings > Family > Location Sharing Each family member decides whether to share their personal location

Sharing your iPhone’s location with a Family Sharing group does not automatically share an AirTag. Use the item-sharing controls in Find My when the goal is to let relatives locate keys, luggage, a bicycle, a pet carrier, or another tagged possession. Apple describes personal-location choices separately in its Family Sharing location guide.

  • SHARE ITEM LOCATION — Share AirTag location access temporarily and securely with trusted contacts, third parties, or over 50 airline partners if you lose something important.

This distinction matters in everyday situations. A parent may want a child or partner to locate a suitcase without revealing the parent’s current position. Conversely, a family member who wants relatives to know where they are should use personal location sharing, not the AirTag controls. The two settings can be used independently.

What you need before sending an invitation

Apple’s current iPhone guide lists account, security and software conditions for sharing an AirTag or a third-party item that supports Find My. Check these before troubleshooting an invitation that will not send:

  • The owner’s Apple Account must have two-factor authentication turned on.
  • Each recipient needs an Apple Account, must be signed in to that account, and must use iCloud. A child account cannot be used as a borrower.
  • The owner and every borrower must have iCloud Keychain enabled.
  • Everyone participating must use iOS 17, iPadOS 17, macOS 14 or later. The cited iPhone guide is presented for iOS 27, but its eligibility list still requires at least those platform versions.
  • One owner can invite as many as five borrowers. That makes six users total for one item, including the owner.

These requirements come from Apple’s Share an AirTag or other item in Find My on iPhone guide. If you are sharing from an iPad, Apple documents the same feature in its iPadOS Find My guide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Apple Account information” means the account identity the recipient actually uses with iCloud. Before sending, ask which account is active on the recipient’s device if they have more than one address. Inviting a different account can leave the request pending even though the person sees Find My notifications on the device.

iCloud Keychain is a requirement for both sides, not just the owner. If one participant has it disabled, turn it on and make sure that person is signed in to iCloud before trying again. Likewise, updating only the owner’s phone is not enough if a borrower remains on an older operating-system version.

Compatible third-party Find My accessories use the same sharing workflow as an AirTag. Compatibility is model-specific, so check the accessory maker’s documentation before assuming a particular tracker supports item sharing. The Apple guide does not provide a complete model list, and buying a new tracker is not required for the steps below.

Share an AirTag or compatible tracker from iPhone

The owner performs the following steps in the Find My app. The labels may read Share AirTag for Apple’s tracker or Share This Item for another compatible product.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the Find My app on the iPhone that owns the item.
  2. Tap Items in the bottom navigation.
  3. Tap the AirTag or compatible item you want your family member to locate.
  4. Tap the item’s More button.
  5. Under Share AirTag or Share This Item, tap Add Person.
  6. Enter the invited person’s Apple Account information.
  7. Tap that person’s Apple Account when it appears in the results. Repeat the search if you want to invite additional borrowers, up to the five-borrower limit.
  8. Tap Done.

The item screen shows the people invited and the status of each invitation. An invitation is not access by itself: the recipient must accept it in Find My.

Use the owner’s account and the tracker’s own entry. Opening the People tab, selecting an iPhone, or starting from Family Sharing settings will not expose the item-sharing controls described here. If the tracker is one of several items, check its name and details before adding a person so that the invitation goes to the intended possession.

You can add borrowers one at a time. After selecting the first account, repeat the add-person process for another eligible family member until the item has five borrowers. The owner remains the sixth possible user; adding another tracker creates a separate sharing allowance for that item.

What the invited family member must do

The recipient receives an invitation associated with their Apple Account. They should open Find My on a supported Apple device, review the request and accept it. After acceptance, the shared tracker is added to their Items list alongside items they own.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A recipient can decline the invitation. Until it is accepted, they cannot use Find My to view the item’s location. If the owner sees a pending invitation, verify that the recipient is signed in to the Apple Account that was invited rather than a different account.

Acceptance is an explicit step, so sending the invitation does not silently add an item to another person’s account. The recipient should look for the request in Find My, confirm that it refers to the expected AirTag or accessory, and accept while signed in to the correct account. If they decline, the owner can send a new invitation later, provided the account and eligibility requirements are satisfied.

Apple says people who share an item do not receive tracking notifications when that item is moving with them. This behavior applies to the people who have accepted item sharing; it does not turn off every safety notification for other people who encounter an unknown tracker.

How many people can share one tracker?

The owner can share one AirTag or compatible item with up to five borrowers, for a total of six users per item. The owner counts as one of those six users. When the limit is reached, remove an existing borrower before inviting someone else.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Role Maximum for one item
Owner 1
Borrowers invited by the owner Up to 5
Total users with access Up to 6

Apple states this limit in the official iPhone user guide. The allowance is per item, not a single six-person cap for every tracker in your account.

  • Find Far Away: When outside of Bluetooth range, use the Find My app to view your 'Item Locator's most recent location on a map. You can use the network and GPS of millions of Apple devices to locate it anywhere in the world.Reduce the loss of your items
  • Share Your Items and Privacy Protection:The item finders tag lets your family view the location of your items (a feature for iOS 17).The chip in this Bluetooth tracker is MFi certified, guaranteeing that your location data is encrypted and protected
  • Water Resistant & Replaceable Battery: Designed for outdoor adventures, this tracker can withstand rain, ensuring you can use it confidently in various weather conditions. Plus, it features a replaceable CR2032 battery that lasts up to a year

For example, five relatives can share a tagged family suitcase, while a different five borrowers can share a tagged bicycle. The cap applies separately to each item. Pending invitations still matter when you are checking the list, so review the item’s sharing section before assuming another slot is available.

Stop sharing with one person

The owner can revoke an individual borrower’s access without removing the tracker from Find My:

  1. Open Find My and tap Items.
  2. Select the shared AirTag or compatible item.
  3. Tap the person’s name in the sharing section.
  4. Tap Stop Sharing.
  5. Confirm the change.

The former borrower loses access to that item’s location. Apple notes that the person may still receive tracking notifications if the item moves with them; stopping access does not necessarily erase every safety alert already triggered by the system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Removing a borrower is useful after a loan, trip or one-time handoff. It also frees a borrower slot for someone else. You do not need to delete the AirTag from the owner’s account or reset the tracker simply to remove one person. The owner remains in control of the item and can invite another eligible account afterward.

When someone nearby receives an unknown-tracker alert

Find My can notify a person when an AirTag that is not shared with them appears to be moving with them. If the owner and the person receiving the alert belong to the same Family Sharing group, Apple documents a request path that lets the person ask the owner to share the AirTag:

  1. Open the tracking notification.
  2. Tap Ask Owner to Share AirTag.
  3. Tap Ask Owner to send the request.

This request option is limited to people in the same Family Sharing group. It is different from the owner initiating an invitation through Find My > Items; the owner can use that direct route for any eligible Apple Account that meets the sharing requirements.

An unknown-tracker alert is therefore not proof that the item has already been shared. It indicates that the system has detected an item near someone who lacks sharing access. The recipient should use the request route only when it is appropriate and should follow the alert’s safety instructions if the tracker is unfamiliar.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Troubleshoot invitations that do not work

The Add Person option is missing

  • Confirm that you opened the Items tab and selected the tracker itself, not the People tab or a device.
  • Check that the item is an AirTag or a model explicitly compatible with Find My item sharing.
  • Update the owner’s device and the intended borrowers’ devices to supported software: iOS 17, iPadOS 17 or macOS 14 and later.
  • Make sure you opened the item’s More menu. The sharing command is inside that menu, under the AirTag- or item-specific heading.

The invitation cannot be sent

  • Verify that the owner’s Apple Account uses two-factor authentication.
  • Make sure the recipient’s Apple Account is entered correctly and that the recipient is signed in to iCloud.
  • Confirm iCloud Keychain is enabled for the owner and each borrower.
  • Check whether five borrowers are already listed. The six-user total includes the owner.
  • Do not try to invite a child account; Apple’s requirements exclude child accounts from this sharing feature.
  • If the person has multiple Apple Accounts, confirm that the invitation was addressed to the account currently used with iCloud.

The recipient cannot see the item

  • Have the recipient accept the invitation in Find My rather than relying on the notification alone.
  • Check that they accepted with the same Apple Account address the owner invited.
  • Confirm they are using a supported operating-system version and are signed in to iCloud.
  • If an old borrower still occupies a slot, the owner must use Stop Sharing before inviting a replacement.
  • Ask the recipient to check the Items tab, where shared trackers appear alongside their own items.

A former borrower still receives an alert

Apple specifically warns that a person who no longer has access may still receive tracking notifications if the item is moving with them. The location-sharing permission has been removed, but safety notifications are a separate behavior. If the person is concerned about an unfamiliar tracker, they should follow the instructions in the alert rather than assuming that the old sharing permission remains active.

4 Pack Apple MFi Certified Tracker Tags Works with Apple Find My (iOS Only) | Bluetooth Item Finder Replaceable Battery Waterproof Smart Tag for Keys Wallet Pets Backpack Luggage Bags Worldwide Tracking
  • Works with Apple Find My (iOS Only): Connect easily through the Apple Find My app—no extra app or subscription needed. Simply add the tracker to the “Items” section, then use your iPhone to find your valuables right away.
  • Smart Location Trackers: Never lose track of your luggage, keys, bags or personal items again. These trackers work perfectly with the Find My app (iOS Only), giving you the ability to quickly find your Cyberdot items wherever they may be.
  • Find Nearby: When your tracker is within Bluetooth range, you can use the Find My app to play a sound, or simply ask Siri to locate it for you. Tap the “Play Sound” button, and the tracker will emit a clear beep to help you quickly find your items by following the sound.
  • Find Far Away: Once your tracker is beyond Bluetooth range, you can still check its last recorded position in the Find My app. Supported by Apple’s worldwide network and GPS, you can locate your items across the globe and effectively avoid losing them.
  • Waterproof Design & Replaceable Battery: This sturdy tracking tag is water-resistant and ideal for outdoor use. It comes with a user-replaceable CR2032 battery that delivers up to one year of dependable performance.

Do not treat a continuing alert as evidence that the former borrower can still open the item in Find My. Apple distinguishes access to the item’s location from tracking notifications generated when an item is detected moving with someone.

Privacy and safety details to explain to family

Sharing an item gives the accepted borrower access to that tracker in Find My. It does not automatically grant access to the owner’s personal location, contacts, devices or other items. Personal location sharing remains an independent choice under Settings > Family > Location Sharing.

The owner controls the item’s borrower list and can remove a person later. A borrower should understand that the owner can end access without needing the borrower’s device in hand. Conversely, the borrower can decline an invitation and does not have to accept it simply because the request came from a family member.

For household use, decide in advance who should be able to locate the item, whether a temporary borrower should be removed after a trip, and which Apple Account each person will use. These decisions avoid accidentally filling the five-borrower allowance or inviting the wrong account.

Explain the arrangement before sharing a tracker attached to a jointly used possession. Everyone should know that the item will appear in their Items list after acceptance and that the owner can later revoke access. If the item changes hands, update the borrower list rather than leaving former borrowers attached indefinitely.

Sharing from iPad

Apple provides an iPadOS version of the procedure. Open Find My, select Items, choose the AirTag or compatible item, open its additional options, and use Add Person under Share AirTag or Share This Item. The invited person still accepts the request in Find My, and the same account, iCloud Keychain, software-version and six-user limits apply. See Apple’s Share an AirTag or other item in Find My on iPad instructions for the iPad interface.

The device used to send the invitation can be an iPad instead of an iPhone, but the ownership and account rules do not change. The owner must still open the tracker’s entry, use its sharing controls and wait for the recipient to accept. A recipient can accept on a supported Apple device with Find My and the required iCloud account setup.

Use the right sharing method for the situation

Situation Correct action Result
Several relatives need to find a suitcase with an AirTag Owner uses Find My > Items > tracker > More > Add Person Accepted borrowers can view that item in their Items list
You want relatives to see where you are Use Settings > Family > Location Sharing Your personal device location is shared according to your own Family Sharing choice
A family member gets an unknown-AirTag alert Use Ask Owner to Share AirTag from the alert when eligible The owner receives a request; the route is limited to the same Family Sharing group
A trip or loan has ended Owner selects the borrower and taps Stop Sharing That person loses item-location access

These examples show why the starting point matters. The Items tab is for a physical tracker, Family settings are for a person’s location, and the alert’s request button is a special route for an eligible unknown-item situation. Choosing the wrong route can make a feature appear to be missing when it is simply located elsewhere.

Practical checklist

  • Identify whether you are sharing a tracker or a person’s location.
  • Use the tracker owner’s iPhone or iPad and open the Items tab.
  • Confirm two-factor authentication, iCloud sign-in and iCloud Keychain for everyone involved.
  • Check that all devices meet the iOS 17, iPadOS 17 or macOS 14 minimum versions.
  • Invite the recipient’s correct Apple Account and wait for acceptance.
  • Keep the five-borrower limit in mind; six users total includes the owner.
  • Remove temporary borrowers from the item’s sharing controls when access is no longer needed.
  • For a third-party accessory, verify Find My compatibility with the accessory maker.
  • If a request comes from an unknown-tracker alert, remember that the request route is limited to the same Family Sharing group.

With those conditions met, family sharing is handled entirely from the tracker’s entry in Find My, while personal-location sharing remains a separate Family Sharing setting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Family Sharing automatically share an AirTag?

No. Family Sharing personal-location settings and AirTag sharing are separate. The owner must open Find My, choose Items, select the tracker and send an invitation through Add Person.

How many relatives can use one shared AirTag?

The owner can share with up to five borrowers, for six users total including the owner. The limit applies separately to each AirTag or compatible item.

Does the recipient have to accept the invitation?

Yes. Sending an invitation does not grant access by itself. The recipient must open Find My, review the request and accept it while signed in to the invited Apple Account.

Can I share a third-party Find My tracker?

Yes, if the model supports Find My item sharing. The workflow uses Share This Item, but compatibility is model-specific, so confirm it with the accessory maker.

What software is required?

Apple lists iOS 17, iPadOS 17 or macOS 14 and later for participants. The owner and borrowers must also use iCloud, have the required Apple Accounts and keep iCloud Keychain enabled.

Can a child account be invited as a borrower?

No. Apple’s sharing requirements exclude child accounts from being borrowers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I remove someone from a shared tracker?

In Find My, open Items, select the shared item, tap the person’s name, choose Stop Sharing and confirm. The person loses access to the item’s location.

Why might a former borrower still get a tracking alert?

Apple says a person may still receive tracking notifications if the item moves with them after sharing is stopped. Those safety notifications are separate from permission to view the item’s location.

Can someone request access after receiving an unknown-AirTag alert?

If the owner and the alerted person are in the same Family Sharing group, the person can open the alert, tap Ask Owner to Share AirTag and then Ask Owner. This request route is limited to that group.

The Bottom Line

To share a tracker, use Find My > Items, open the AirTag or compatible item’s More menu, choose Add Person, and invite the recipient’s Apple Account. The recipient must accept in Find My. Up to five borrowers can share one item with the owner, while personal location remains a separate choice under Settings > Family > Location Sharing.
