For a 24/7 music radio stream where listeners mainly listen rather than talk with a host in real time, choose Normal latency in YouTube Studio. YouTube says Normal is intended for non-interactive streams and has the lowest viewer buffering. Low and ultra-low latency are for interaction, trade some buffering resilience for faster delivery, and do not support 4K.
Set latency in YouTube Studio
The selectable latency control applies to encoder-based streams. YouTube says webcam and mobile streams are set up for interactivity and do not offer a user-selected latency setting.

Which latency setting suits a music radio stream?
| Setting | Intended use | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Normal | Non-interactive streams | YouTube describes it as the highest-quality viewer setting, with the lowest viewer buffering. All resolutions and live features are supported. This is the recommended choice for passive music radio. |
| Low | Limited interaction where an immediate response is not essential | YouTube says most viewers experience latency under 10 seconds. Buffering can increase compared with Normal, and 4K is not supported. |
| Ultra-low | Highly interactive streams and real-time conversation | YouTube says most viewers experience latency under five seconds. Buffering is more likely, and 4K is not supported. |
The under-10-second and under-five-second figures are YouTube’s general descriptions for most viewers, not guarantees for every viewer, channel, or network. Lower latency gives the player less time to build a read-ahead buffer, so network or encoder interruptions have less room to be absorbed. See YouTube’s live streaming latency guidance.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset

Why Normal latency also fits 4K
YouTube’s latency guidance says Low and Ultra-low do not support 4K. Its encoder settings guidance says that for 4K/2160p, low-latency improvement is unavailable and streams are set to Normal latency. If 4K matters to the channel, Normal is the compatible choice.
For encoder configuration, YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate encoding, and a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Its encoder settings page covers supported codecs, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate; use that current table for the planned output rather than carrying over a bitrate from a different setup. Test with audio and movement similar to the actual broadcast, and monitor stream health. Details are in YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Plan separately for a 24/7 archive
Latency selection does not make a continuous broadcast safer to archive. YouTube says it can automatically archive a live stream if it is less than 12 hours long, and warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. A single uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast therefore should not be treated as an automatically archived video. If you need a recording, keep a local archive backup. YouTube’s guidance is at Archive live streams.

Prepare the encoder and connection for continuous listening
- Test before launch: Check the encoder settings and stream health before relying on a long-running broadcast.
- Leave bandwidth headroom: YouTube recommends upload capacity equal to the combined bitrate of primary and backup streams, plus a 20% margin. Count both streams if both send video. See YouTube streaming tips.
- Verify the audience view: Confirm the stream is reachable from channel and watch pages and on mobile devices, and listen for audio or picture problems.
- Check your local recording: If retaining an archive, confirm the local file is being written and continues to grow.
- Test failover if configured: If you use a backup encoder, test that it takes over as intended before depending on it.
