For an always-on YouTube music stream with little live conversation, start with Normal latency and enable DVR if you want viewers to pause and rewind. Set both in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Test and monitor the actual stream, and plan archiving separately: YouTube warns that DVR may be limited on streams longer than 12 hours and that streams over 12 hours may not be archived.
Choose latency for the kind of interaction you have
Latency is the delay between capture and playback for viewers. Lower latency reduces the time YouTube’s player has to build a buffer, which can increase the chance of buffering or interruptions. YouTube describes Normal latency as the choice for non-interactive streams and the option with the lowest viewer buffering; that makes it the source-backed starting point for continuous music when responding to chat in real time is not central. This is guidance based on YouTube’s stated use cases, not a test of a particular channel or connection. YouTube’s latency guidance explains the trade-offs.

| Mode | YouTube’s intended use | What to consider for a music channel |
|---|---|---|
| Normal latency | Streams without audience interaction; lowest viewer buffering among the choices. | Best starting point when the music is continuous and chat response is not a priority. |
| Low latency | Some interaction, such as polls. YouTube says most viewers experience latency under 10 seconds. | Consider when interaction matters but instantaneous conversation does not. YouTube says 4K is unsupported in this mode. |
| Ultra-low latency | Highly interactive streams with real-time engagement. YouTube says most viewers experience latency under five seconds. | Use when live conversation is central; YouTube warns buffering may increase and says 4K is unsupported. |
The under-10-second and under-five-second figures describe what most viewers experience, not a guarantee for your stream. Webcam and mobile streams do not expose this latency control, according to YouTube.

- In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go live, then create or select the stream.
- In the Live Control Room stream dashboard, open Stream settings.
- Under Stream latency, select Normal, Low, or Ultra-low according to how much real-time audience interaction the stream needs.
- Open Additional settings and turn DVR on or off. YouTube describes DVR this way: “Enabling DVR lets viewers pause, rewind, and continue during your stream.” See Manage live stream settings and Turn on DVR on live streams.
You can change DVR while live, but the change applies only to viewers who start playback after you make it. People already watching may not get the new behavior until they start playback again.

Know what DVR does—and does not do—for a long stream
DVR gives viewers pause-and-rewind controls during a live stream; it is not a substitute for a separate recording or archive plan. YouTube says DVR capability may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. Its archive guidance says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive backup. Check YouTube’s live stream archive guidance and plan for the possibility that an always-on broadcast will run past the 12-hour threshold.
Test stream health before relying on an always-on broadcast
Before a scheduled stream, test your encoder with representative audio and movement under conditions similar to the planned broadcast. Choose a bitrate appropriate to your connection and the stream’s resolution, frame rate, and codec; without those details and the available upload capacity, there is no responsible single bitrate to prescribe. YouTube publishes encoder recommendations by format in Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it identifies copyrighted material, it may replace the stream with a placeholder; continued issues can lead to interruption or termination. For licensed third-party music, YouTube says to ask the rights owner to add the channel to its Content ID allowlist. A license alone may not prevent an interruption if the channel has not been allowlisted. Details are in YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

Troubleshoot common DVR and latency problems
- Viewers cannot pause or rewind: Check that DVR is enabled under Additional settings. If you changed it during the broadcast, the change affects viewers who start playback afterward, not necessarily those who were already watching.
- Viewers report buffering after switching to a lower-latency mode: Lower latency leaves less buffer time. Consider returning to Normal for a continuous, non-interactive music stream, then test under representative conditions.
- The latency selector is missing: YouTube says webcam and mobile streams do not expose this control. Use the relevant Live Control Room stream settings for a stream type that offers latency selection.
- DVR or replay is unavailable on a very long stream: YouTube warns that DVR may be limited or unavailable beyond 12 hours and that streams longer than 12 hours may not be archived. Keep a local archive backup and do not rely on the YouTube archive as the only copy.
- A stream is interrupted despite a music license: YouTube may still detect third-party music. Ask the rights owner to allowlist the channel in Content ID, and confirm that the rights cover the actual use.
- Stream health is poor or inconsistent: Check Live Control Room metrics and test the encoder and connection under conditions similar to the real stream. Revisit bitrate and format against YouTube’s encoder recommendations instead of raising bitrate without checking upload capacity.
