Set chat rules with YouTube Studio’s channel moderation controls and the individual stream’s Live Control Room settings. Use blocked words and message review for unwanted content, slow mode to pace busy chat, and subscriber-only chat if spam is a problem. Assign moderators to cover the hours you are away. YouTube has no special bhajan-chat rules preset; these are standard YouTube live-chat tools.
Choose the right controls for your chat
Different settings solve different problems. Start with the least restrictive controls that address what is actually happening in your chat; there is no single configuration YouTube recommends for every devotional channel.

YouTube lets you use slow mode and subscriber-only chat together. If you turn on a subscription-duration threshold, tell viewers about the wait so first-time listeners understand why they cannot post immediately. See YouTube’s live-chat moderation instructions for the current descriptions of these settings.

Set channel-wide moderation and blocked words
- Open YouTube Studio → Settings → Community moderation → Content controls.
- Under Messages in your live chat, choose a moderation level: None, Basic, or Strict. Basic holds messages YouTube identifies as potentially inappropriate; Strict holds a broader range. With Basic or Strict, held messages remain hidden unless you choose to show them.
- Add unwanted terms to the blocked-words list. YouTube says messages containing, or closely matching, a listed word are blocked.
- Review held messages and adjust the list if it catches legitimate devotional vocabulary, names, transliterations, or messages in other languages. YouTube cautions that automated moderation is not perfect; the channel decides whether to show or hide held messages.
A short list aimed at recurring problems is usually easier to maintain than an indiscriminate list. YouTube’s controls do not identify a word as unsuitable specifically because a channel streams bhajans.

Set participation limits and slow mode on the stream
- Open the stream in Live Control Room, then select Edit → Live chat.
- Under Who can send a message, choose the participation option you want, such as subscribers. If available, set how long a person must have been subscribed before posting.
- To limit message frequency, open Edit → Customization → Message delay → Slow mode, then enter the interval between messages.
- Save the settings and check the chat as a viewer if possible, so you know what a new listener sees before trying to post.
Open chat is the easiest entry point for a first-time listener. Subscriber-only chat adds a participation barrier in exchange for restricting who can post; members-only chat is a narrower option for a channel that wants chat limited to members. Choose based on whether access for new listeners, spam control, or member exclusivity matters most.
Write clear rules and staff the chat
Settings filter and pace messages; a brief explanation tells viewers what kind of conversation you want. You might pin or post a concise note asking people to be respectful, avoid spam and unsolicited links, and keep messages appropriate to the channel’s devotional purpose. Those are suggested channel rules, not a YouTube-prescribed bhajan policy.

YouTube supports standard and managing moderators. Moderators can remove messages, time users out, hide users, and review held items. Managing moderators have additional live-chat controls, but they cannot access YouTube Studio or Live Control Room to change the channel’s underlying settings. A 24/7 stream can receive messages while the owner is offline, so plan moderator coverage for the hours you cannot monitor chat. YouTube’s creator guidance for live community building also recommends using moderation tools such as moderators, blocked words or links, slow mode, and participation limits.

If live chat is missing or unavailable
- Check the audience designation. Live chat is disabled for a video or stream set as made for kids. Confirm the audience setting before treating a missing chat control as a technical fault.
- Check stream status and policy restrictions. YouTube may turn chat off when stream content or chat violates its Community Guidelines. Review the stream’s status and any notices in YouTube Studio. See YouTube’s live-streaming restriction guidance.
- Check the closest current menu label. YouTube can move Studio controls. These paths reflect the official help pages as accessed on October 3, 2026; if your account differs, look for the equivalent moderation, live-chat, or customization setting.
