Questionable means the NFL considers it uncertain whether a player will play; it is neither an inactive announcement nor a probability. Keep the receiver in consideration, but line up an eligible fallback and check when that alternative’s game locks. NFL teams designate inactives about 90 minutes before kickoff, which may be too late to use an earlier-playing backup on many fantasy platforms.
What “Questionable” tells you—and what it does not
The NFL’s official game-status policy defines Questionable as “Uncertain if player will play” (NFL Football Operations, Game Status Report policy). The label does not tell you the player’s odds of playing, confirm that he will be inactive, or predict his workload if active. The NFL’s 2016 policy announcement explained that a player should be listed as Questionable when there is any question about his availability (NFL announcement on 2016 injury-report policy revisions).

Read practice participation and game status as separate pieces of information. The NFL injury report presents them separately, so a practice entry alone should not be treated as the final game decision (NFL injury report). Check the actual player’s latest report as the game approaches; status can change during the week and close to kickoff.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBuild a lineup plan before kickoff
- Check your league’s lock rule. Find the lineup deadline and any custom settings in the fantasy service you use. As one dated example, NFL Fantasy’s published 2023 rules said a player’s status could be changed only before his team was scheduled to start, using NFL.com’s clock. That example is not a universal rule or a guarantee of the current settings in your league (NFL Fantasy lineup-change rules).
- Pick and rank an eligible fallback. Start with a healthy receiver who fits your roster, then weigh likely role and expected use, scoring format, and the alternative’s projected production. A projection is one input, not a guarantee; NFL Fantasy describes projections as a tool for managers (NFL Fantasy Toolbox).
- Compare both kickoff times. A fallback whose game starts at the same time or later can preserve more time to react, when your roster and league rules allow it. If the fallback plays earlier, make the choice before that player’s game locks; a later update about your questionable receiver may arrive too late. This is a practical timing strategy, not a promise that every platform has the same lock behavior.
- Recheck official status and dependable reporting. Do not treat an unconfirmed rumor or the generic Questionable label as final inactive news. Teams designate inactives about 90 minutes before scheduled kickoff, according to NFL Fantasy support; this is approximate timing, not a guarantee that every update appears at an exact minute (NFL Fantasy inactive-player timing).
- Make the switch before the relevant lock. If the receiver is inactive, use your fallback if your roster and platform permit it. If he is active, decide based on expected role and workload compared with the alternative. Active status alone does not establish that he will have his normal workload.
Keep the questionable receiver or start the fallback?
| Decision factor | What to check | How it affects the choice |
|---|---|---|
| Availability | Latest official game status, practice participation, and inactive confirmation. | Use the current evidence; Questionable by itself settles neither availability nor workload. |
| Timing | Kickoff for both players and your league’s lock rule. | If the fallback locks first, you may have to choose before the receiver’s status is final. |
| Role and workload | Current team reporting and credible projections for expected use. | An active receiver with an uncertain role may compare differently with a healthy alternative who has a clearer role. |
| Scoring and roster context | Your scoring format, lineup requirements, and the alternative’s expected production. | The same status can lead to different choices in different leagues and rosters. |
| Risk tolerance | How much you value the receiver’s potential upside versus the risk of a late inactive or limited role. | Questionable does not resolve this trade-off; choose according to your roster and appetite for risk. |
Can an automatic swap protect your lineup?
NFL Fantasy describes an Auto-Swap Inactives feature that acts on players projected to score zero and lets the manager rank a backup list (NFL Fantasy Auto-Swap Inactives). Check whether your service and league offer this feature, how it is configured, and which players qualify before relying on it. An automatic option does not replace checking your lineup rules or ranking a suitable backup.
