Free Play Days does not have its own parental-control menu. It is a temporary Xbox promotion, so you manage a child’s access through the normal Microsoft family controls: age and content filters, screen-time limits, privacy and communication permissions, multiplayer settings, and purchase approval. Set those controls on the child’s Microsoft/Xbox account, then check the current promotion’s dates, game list, and regional eligibility before allowing play.
The steps below cover both console-only families and households where the child also uses Windows or Android. Microsoft can change app labels, but the functions and settings remain the same.

What Free Play Days means for parental controls
Free Play Days makes selected Xbox games playable without a normal purchase for a limited promotional window. The roster, dates, and eligibility can change from one promotion to the next and may differ by region or account type. A game being temporarily free does not change the account’s age rating, privacy, communication, multiplayer, or screen-time rules.
Recommended Free Tools
That means you do not need a special “Free Play Days” restriction. A child account that is blocked from a particular rating remains blocked while that game is promoted. A daily time allowance still applies when the child launches the game, and communication or multiplayer permissions continue to govern online features. Once the promotion ends, access to the full game normally requires whatever entitlement the promotion specifies; parental settings remain in place either way.

Only a parent account in the Microsoft family group can change a child account’s Xbox privacy and online settings. Use the Xbox Family Settings app for Xbox-specific management, or open account.microsoft.com/family to manage the family group in a browser.
Decide what you need to control
Free access can make a child more likely to try a game without asking first, so decide which risk you are addressing before changing settings. Content controls determine whether the game is suitable. Time controls determine when and how long it can be played. Privacy, communication, and multiplayer controls govern contact with other players. Purchase approval prevents a child from buying the game, add-ons, or other Microsoft Store items while exploring the promotion.
| Control | What it governs | Primary interface | Useful when | Scope or qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Age and content filter | Games and other content categories allowed for the child’s age rating | Xbox Family Settings app | You want a game blocked automatically if its rating is above the permitted level | The filter follows the selected age-rating rules; exact available ratings depend on the account’s region |
| Screen-time limit | Daily duration and permitted hours | Microsoft Family Safety | You want a set number of minutes or a schedule for Xbox play | Limits can extend across connected Windows, Xbox, and Android devices |
| Privacy and communication | Who can contact the child and what social interactions are available | Xbox Family Settings app | You want to reduce messages, friend requests, or voice and text exposure | Settings apply to the child’s Xbox account, not just one promotional game |
| Multiplayer permission | Whether the child can join online multiplayer | Xbox Family Settings app | You want the child to play solo but not join online sessions without approval | Some games use separate in-game account systems, which may have additional rules |
| Purchase approval | Whether a child must ask before buying from the Microsoft Store | Xbox console Family settings | You want to prevent an accidental purchase after a free trial period | Approval protects Store purchases; it does not replace age, time, or social controls |
Set up the child account first
Confirm the child is in your Microsoft family group
- Sign in with the parent Microsoft account that manages the family group.
- Open the Xbox Family Settings app, or visit account.microsoft.com/family.
- Confirm that the child appears as a family member with a child account, rather than using an adult account or a shared console profile.
- If the child is not listed, add or invite the child to the family group and complete the account setup before changing Xbox restrictions.
Controls attached to an adult account cannot provide the same parent-managed restrictions as a supervised child account. If several children use the console, give each child a separate Microsoft/Xbox profile so time, content, and social settings are applied to the correct person.

On the Xbox, verify that the child launches the game from the supervised profile. If a parent profile is left signed in or the child uses a different account, the restrictions may appear not to work even though they are correctly configured. Keep the parent account protected with its own sign-in security and do not share its credentials.
Apply an age and content limit
Xbox content filters use the child’s permitted age level to restrict games and other content categories. ESRB guidance for Xbox explains that the selected age setting applies across games and related content according to the rating rules. This is the first control to check if a Free Play Days title may contain themes, language, or features you do not want enabled.

- Open the Xbox Family Settings app and select the child’s profile.
- Tap or select the settings icon for that profile.
- Open the content or age-filter section.
- Choose the age level that matches your family rule.
- Save the change, then have the child sign out and back in if the console does not immediately refresh the restriction.
The filter is account-wide. It does not create a separate allowance just because a title is temporarily free. If the promotion includes a game above the child’s permitted rating, the child should receive the same restriction they would receive for a purchased copy.
When a game is blocked
Read the restriction message rather than changing several settings at once. If the message identifies an age or content limit, review the child’s permitted rating. If the game is allowed but an online mode is unavailable, check multiplayer and communication permissions instead. Avoid raising the age filter merely to test a promotion unless you have decided that the game is appropriate.

Set a daily play-time limit and schedule
Microsoft Family Safety can limit apps and games by duration and by time of day. Microsoft says limits extend across connected Windows, Xbox, and Android devices that are managed through the Family Safety app. This is useful when a child can switch between a console and a computer or phone to continue playing.
- Open Microsoft Family Safety and select the child’s family-member profile.
- Choose the device category: Windows, Xbox, or Mobile.
- Open Set time limits.
- Select Apps, features, and games. In some current versions the same area is labeled Apps and games.
- Find the Free Play Days game, then set a daily duration.
- Set the allowed time window for each day if you want play to be available only during specific hours.
- Save the schedule and confirm that it is attached to the child’s account and the intended device.
You can use a short game-specific allowance inside a broader Xbox schedule. For example, the child may have an evening window for Xbox use but a smaller limit for the promoted game. If the child plays the same title on another connected device, check that device’s entry as well; Family Safety’s cross-device behavior depends on the devices being connected to the same managed family setup.
Make the limit predictable
- Set the schedule before the promotion starts, not after the child has already used the available time.
- Explain the daily reset time and the permitted hours so the child knows when access will return.
- Review the limit after changing the child’s device list or Microsoft account, because a newly connected device may need to be added to Family Safety.
- Use the app’s request or extension workflow when you want to approve extra time instead of changing the permanent rule.
Choose privacy, communication, and multiplayer permissions
Free Play Days titles can expose a child to the same social features as a purchased game. Xbox family settings provide controls for privacy, online safety, social interactions, multiplayer, and content restrictions. Configure these independently from the age filter and time schedule.

- [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by
- In the Xbox Family Settings app, select the child’s profile.
- Open the privacy or online-safety settings.
- Review who can send messages, make friend requests, view the child’s activity, or communicate by voice or text.
- Choose whether multiplayer is allowed, blocked, or requires your approval.
- Save the settings and test them with the child’s account.
Match the setting to the child’s activity
- Solo play: Allow the game itself but disable multiplayer if you want the child to play offline or alone.
- Known friends: Permit interaction with approved friends while limiting contact from strangers, where the available Xbox options support that distinction.
- Open multiplayer: Use only when you are comfortable with the child joining sessions and receiving the associated communications.
- Voice or text concerns: Restrict communication separately from multiplayer if the child may play online but should not use chat.
Some games may ask the player to use an additional in-game account or service. Xbox account settings still apply to the console account, but a separate service can have its own age, privacy, and chat controls. If a feature remains available after you change Xbox settings, inspect the game’s own account and privacy menus rather than assuming the Free Play Days promotion bypassed Xbox controls.
Require approval for purchases
A promotional game can lead to requests for downloadable content, upgrades, subscriptions, or a purchase after the free period. Turn on purchase approval so the child must ask before buying from the Microsoft Store.
- On the Xbox console, press the Xbox button to open the guide.
- Go to Profile & system → Settings → Account → Family settings.
- Open the child’s account or the purchase-approval option.
- Enable the requirement that the child ask before buying from the Microsoft Store.
- Save the setting and test it with a harmless free item or by checking that the purchase prompt requests parent approval.
Purchase approval is separate from the game’s age and time rules. It stops an unauthorized Store transaction; it does not automatically block a game that is allowed by the content filter, and it does not end a play session when the daily time expires.
Check the live Free Play Days promotion
The promotion’s name alone does not identify a guaranteed game, date, or entitlement. Before you promise access, verify the current Xbox listing and confirm:
- The exact title included in the promotion.
- The start and end dates and the time zone used for the offer.
- Whether the offer is available in your country or region.
- Whether the child’s account type and subscription status meet the promotion’s eligibility rules.
- Whether the offer covers the full game or a defined edition, mode, or trial period.
Do not name a specific title to a child until you have checked the live listing. The game list and dates change, and a title available to one region or account may not appear for another. If the promotion ends while the child is playing, the console can require a purchase or another entitlement before launching the game again; your parental settings should remain unchanged.

Verify the controls with a short test
A five-minute test catches most setup errors before the child starts a longer session.
- Sign out of the parent profile and sign in to the child profile.
- Open the promoted game or its store page.
- Confirm that the age filter allows or blocks the title as intended.
- If online play is permitted, check whether the expected multiplayer and communication options appear.
- Start the game and verify that the remaining daily time reflects the limit you set.
- Attempt a Store purchase far enough to reach the approval prompt, without confirming a transaction.
- Sign back in as the parent and check the activity or request notification.
If the test produces a different result, change one setting at a time and test again. Multiple simultaneous changes make it difficult to identify whether the problem is an account assignment, a stale console session, a device-scope issue, or a game-specific setting.
Troubleshoot common problems
The child can play despite a restriction
- Check that the child is signed in with the supervised account, not a parent or adult profile.
- Confirm that the parent account actually manages the family group.
- Close the game, sign out, and sign back in so the console retrieves the latest policy.
- Review both the age filter and the game’s online permissions; they block different features.
- Make sure the console is connected to the internet so account changes can synchronize.
The game is allowed, but multiplayer or chat is unavailable
Review privacy, communication, and multiplayer permissions separately. A content filter can allow the game while a social setting blocks its online modes. If the title uses an additional game account, check that account’s age and communication settings as well.
The time limit does not appear to apply
- Verify that the game is listed under the child’s Xbox device in Family Safety.
- Check whether the child is playing on a Windows or Android device that is not connected to the same family setup.
- Look for the current label, either Apps, features, and games or Apps and games.
- Confirm that the schedule covers the current day and that the daily allowance has not already been used on another connected device.
- Restart the affected device after saving a new rule.
The child can buy content without asking
Recheck the console route Profile & system → Settings → Account → Family settings while signed in as the parent. Confirm that purchase approval is enabled for the correct child account and that the child is not using an adult profile with independent purchasing rights.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe promotion is missing
Compare the account’s region, eligibility, and subscription status with the live promotion listing. A changing roster, regional availability, or an expired offer can explain why another account sees a game that this account does not. Parental controls cannot make an ineligible promotion appear.
Best Value
A practical setup for different family needs
You want to allow a short trial
Set the age filter first, allow only the communication and multiplayer features you are comfortable with, then assign a small daily game limit. Turn on purchase approval before the child opens the Store page. This combination permits exploration without granting unrestricted play or spending.
You allow offline play but not online contact
Leave the content filter at the appropriate age level, allow the game if it passes that filter, and block multiplayer and communications. Add a time schedule so the child can play during agreed hours. Test the game’s offline mode because some titles require an online connection even when you have disabled social features.
You manage several devices
Use Microsoft Family Safety for the time schedule and verify each connected Windows, Xbox, and Android device. Use Xbox Family Settings for Xbox privacy, communication, and multiplayer decisions. This division keeps the cross-device time rule in one place while preserving console-specific social controls.
You want the child to request exceptions
Keep the regular age, social, and purchase rules in place. When the child reaches a time limit or encounters a blocked feature, use the parent approval or extension request rather than loosening the permanent setting. This preserves a clear default while allowing an occasional exception.
Parent checklist before the child plays
- The child uses a separate Microsoft/Xbox account in your family group.
- The age and content filter matches the child’s permitted rating.
- A daily duration and allowed time window are set in Family Safety.
- The Xbox, Windows, or Android devices the child uses are connected to the managed family setup.
- Privacy, communication, and multiplayer permissions match your rules.
- Microsoft Store purchase approval is enabled.
- You checked the current Free Play Days title, dates, region, and eligibility.
- You tested the settings from the child’s profile.
What happens when Free Play Days ends
Parental controls do not expire with the promotion. The child’s account keeps its age filter, time schedule, privacy settings, multiplayer permissions, and purchase-approval requirement. What changes is the game entitlement: when the promotional period ends, the child may need a purchase or another qualifying entitlement to launch the title again. If you do not want a purchase request, leave approval enabled and remove or hide the game from the child’s accessible library according to your household rules.
Because Free Play Days is time-limited and its roster changes, treat each new promotion as a fresh eligibility check. The control setup can stay in place, but the title, dates, and regional availability must be verified again.
