How to Set VLC to Play Videos Back to Back Without a Gap on YouTube Live

For one video, set VLC to repeat the current item; for several videos, use repeat-all or configure a VLM broadcast to play successive inputs in a loop. These settings control VLC playback, not YouTube delivery: repeating a file in VLC does not by itself start or maintain a YouTube Live broadcast.

Choose the right VLC repeat behavior

Decide whether you want one file to replay continuously or a playlist to cycle through its files. VLC treats these as different repeat modes.

What you want VLC behavior
Repeat one video Repeat the current item.
Play several videos in order, then start over Repeat all items in the playlist.

VideoLAN’s playlist API documents the distinction between repeat-current and repeat-all, but it is not a version-specific walkthrough of the desktop interface. [VideoLAN playlist API]

Set up one video or a playlist in VLC

Repeat one video

  1. Open the video in VLC.
  2. Enable the repeat-current mode in VLC’s playback controls. Check the selected repeat state; repeat-current repeats the selected item rather than cycling a list.
  3. Let the video play through and confirm that VLC starts it again.

Repeat several videos

  1. Add the files to a VLC playlist in the order you want them played.
  2. Enable repeat-all rather than repeat-current.
  3. Play through the list and verify that VLC returns to the first item after the last one.

These steps establish local playback behavior only. VLC interface labels and controls can vary by version, and a successful local loop does not verify a live YouTube feed.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0

For a broadcast configuration, use VLM’s successive inputs and loop

VLC’s VideoLAN Manager (VLM) reference describes a broadcast that plays its first input and then advances to the next, like a playlist. Its loop option restarts the input list once the final input ends. This is the relevant VLC-side approach when you are configuring a broadcast from multiple files rather than simply using playlist playback. [VideoLAN VLM reference]

VideoLAN’s VLC 3.0 desktop documentation also shows successive media inputs in one channel and uses sout-keep so the stream output stays open when one song ends. That example sends an HTTP stream to a receiving device on a local network; it is a continuity reference, not a demonstrated YouTube ingest configuration. Do not copy its destination or assume it will work unchanged with YouTube. [VideoLAN VLC 3.0 streaming documentation]

Configure YouTube delivery separately

To appear on YouTube Live, VLC’s output must reach YouTube through a compatible encoder feed configured for your channel. The repeat controls and VLM settings manage the source sequence; they do not supply the channel’s ingest configuration or establish that YouTube is receiving the stream. A complete, current official recipe for sending VLC desktop output directly to YouTube Live is not established here, so avoid relying on an assumed sout command or an untested configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and check the ingest protocol and settings currently available for your channel.
  2. Configure a compatible encoder for that protocol and the channel’s current ingest details. Keep protocol-specific requirements separate; do not assume that settings for one ingest method apply to another.
  3. Send a test feed and verify both that YouTube receives it and that the video advances and loops as intended before using it for an event.

YouTube’s official setup page retrieved here covers HLS specifically, not a general VLC-to-YouTube workflow. It says HLS uses 1–4 second segments and has higher latency than RTMP because it sends segments. Those details apply to HLS; they are not universal settings for every protocol. Check for gaps and diagnose failures

  • The video ends and does not restart: Check whether repeat-current is enabled for a single file or repeat-all for a playlist.
  • The playlist restarts after each file: You may have selected repeat-current. Switch to repeat-all if you want the whole list to play before it starts over.
  • VLC plays locally, but YouTube shows no live feed: Local playback is separate from delivery. Check the encoder’s connection, the protocol and ingest details in Live Control Room, and whether the encoder is actually sending output.
  • The output stops between files: For a VLM broadcast, check that inputs are configured successively and the broadcast loop is enabled. VideoLAN’s VLC 3.0 example uses sout-keep for continuity across successive inputs, but its HTTP receiver context does not prove YouTube compatibility.
  • The feed arrives but has delay: Confirm which ingest protocol is in use. YouTube’s cited latency note is specific to HLS compared with RTMP; it does not establish a latency result for every setup.
