How to set up ZimaOS Photos and automatically back up your phone

ZimaClient connects your iPhone or Android phone to a ZimaOS device, copies the photos you choose to storage on that device, and can continue backing up every new shot automatically. For the most reliable setup, put both devices on the same Wi‑Fi network for the first connection, direct the backup to a dedicated disk or RAID pool rather than the usually smaller system drive, and then add that backup folder to ZimaOS Photos. Photos indexes the files in place, so adding the folder does not move or duplicate your originals.

This guide covers the complete first-time setup, album selection, cellular-data choices, storage layouts, remote access, supported formats, performance expectations, and the fixes for common failures.

How the ZimaOS phone-backup workflow works

There are three parts to the workflow:

  1. ZimaClient runs on the phone and discovers the ZimaOS device, authenticates your account, and performs the upload.
  2. Phone Backup stores the uploaded files in the destination you select. The first run transfers the existing photos in your selection; subsequent runs transfer changes.
  3. ZimaOS Photos indexes that destination folder as a library. It reads the files where they already are instead of creating a second copy.

The phone and ZimaOS device do not need to remain on the same Wi‑Fi network after the initial local setup if you enable remote access. Remote use depends on the remote-access feature in Settings > Network and is enabled through ZimaClient.

What you need before starting

  • A powered-on ZimaOS device connected to your network.
  • Your phone connected to the same Wi‑Fi network as the ZimaOS device for first discovery. A nearby 5 GHz connection is generally preferable when available.
  • A ZimaOS account and its password.
  • ZimaClient installed from the iOS App Store or Google Play.
  • Enough free capacity in the destination you plan to use. Check the available space shown in Phone Backup options before starting a large library.

Keep the phone near the router during the first transfer. A large camera roll can take substantial time, and moving out of Wi‑Fi range or allowing the phone to sleep aggressively can interrupt progress.

Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

Set up your first phone backup

1. Open ZimaClient and discover the device

  1. Launch ZimaClient on the phone.
  2. Allow it to scan the local network.
  3. Wait for your ZimaOS device to appear in the list.
  4. Tap the device you want to use.

Discovery is local at this stage. If no device appears, confirm that the ZimaOS hardware is powered on, has a network connection, and that the phone is using the same Wi‑Fi network. Guest Wi‑Fi networks can isolate devices from one another, so use the main home network when possible.

2. Sign in

Enter the ZimaOS account credentials when prompted. Use the account that should own the backup library. If several people will back up to the same device, give each person a separate ZimaOS account so their libraries and access permissions remain separated.

3. Choose the photos or albums to include

Open the Phone Backup settings and select the iOS Photos albums you want to include. Album selection is useful when you want the camera roll but not screenshots, downloaded images, or other automatically created albums. Selecting only the albums you need also reduces the first transfer and the storage consumed on the NAS.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The documented album picker is for iOS Photos. On Android, the names and available controls can differ by ZimaClient version and phone; choose the available media-selection option rather than assuming that an iOS album name will exist.

4. Choose a destination

Phone Backup creates a default destination automatically, but you can point it to a location that matches your storage plan. Prefer a dedicated data disk or RAID-backed space over the system drive. The system drive is commonly the smallest device in a ZimaOS installation and can fill quickly when it receives years of phone photos and videos.

Use a clear folder name for each person or phone. For example, separate destinations for family accounts make ownership and later troubleshooting easier. Do not create multiple backup jobs that target the same folder unless you deliberately want their files combined.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

5. Confirm and start

  1. Review the selected albums and the destination path.
  2. Check the free-space indicator in the backup options.
  3. Start the backup.
  4. Keep the phone on reliable Wi‑Fi until the initial run completes.

The first run is the long transfer because it copies the existing selection. Later runs look for changes and upload only new or changed items, so they normally finish much faster.

Turn on automatic backup

In ZimaClient’s Phone Backup settings, enable the automatic-backup switch after confirming the destination. The vendor describes the behavior this way in its ZimaOS 1.8.0 announcement (2026):

“One tap in Zima Client enables automatic backup of existing photos and every new shot directly to your ZimaOS device.”

With the switch enabled, the app can process the existing selection and continue watching for new photos. Leave the destination reachable and periodically open ZimaClient to verify that the most recent backup has completed, especially after an operating-system update, a password change, or a long period in which the app has not run.

Decide whether to allow cellular data

Phone Backup exposes a separate option for backing up over cellular data. Leave it disabled if you want uploads restricted to Wi‑Fi or if your mobile plan has a data cap. Enabling it allows new photos to upload when Wi‑Fi is unavailable, but a video-heavy library can consume mobile data quickly. A practical compromise is to use Wi‑Fi for the initial transfer and enable cellular backup only when your plan and monthly allowance make that acceptable.

Live Photos

The documented workflow retains the motion component of Live Photos. Treat a Live Photo as more than a still JPEG when estimating transfer size and storage needs.

Choose a storage layout that will not trap your library

The backup destination determines how much room you have for future photos and how resilient the files are to a drive failure. These options address different needs:

Layout What it provides When it fits Important limitation
System drive Uses the storage already hosting the ZimaOS installation. Temporary testing or a very small library. Usually the smallest drive; it can fill quickly and compete with system data.
Dedicated single disk Places the photo library on a separate data disk. One-drive systems where capacity and simple management matter most. A disk failure can make the library unavailable unless another backup exists.
RAID 1 with two identical drives Mirrors data across both drives. Many home setups that want protection from one drive failing. Usable capacity is roughly that of one drive, and RAID is not an independent backup.
RAID 5 with three or more drives Provides more usable capacity than mirroring while retaining redundancy. Users with at least three drives who need a larger protected pool. Requires more drives and careful recovery planning; it still is not an off-device backup.

ZimaOS recommends two identical drives in RAID 1 for many home installations and presents RAID 5 for systems with three or more drives that need additional capacity with protection. RAID protects availability against certain drive failures; it does not protect against accidental deletion, ransomware, fire, theft, or a mistake replicated across the array. Keep an independent backup if the photos are irreplaceable.

Estimate capacity before selecting the folder

  • Include both still images and videos; videos and Live Photos consume substantially more space than ordinary stills.
  • Allow room for future years of captures, not just the current camera roll.
  • Leave free space for ZimaOS services and filesystem overhead instead of filling a pool to its limit.
  • Check the free-space display in Phone Backup before each large import or when changing the destination.

Add the backup folder to ZimaOS Photos

Uploading files does not automatically make them appear in the Photos interface. Add the Phone Backup folder as a Photos source:

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Photos on ZimaOS.
  2. Use the settings control in the upper-left corner.
  3. Choose the option to add a source folder.
  4. Select the folder used by Phone Backup.
  5. Confirm the source and wait for indexing to complete.

Photos indexes the folder in place. It does not move or copy the underlying files, so adding a source should not double your storage usage. If you later change the Phone Backup destination, add the new folder as a source and remove the old source only after verifying that the new location is complete.

Once indexed, the library can be viewed from the phone, a web browser, and an iPad. Photos provides wall, timeline, map, collections, and custom-album views, along with local-AI search.

Supported formats and metadata

Photos documentation lists support for common phone, camera, and editing formats:

  • Mainstream RAW formats including ARW, CR2, CR3, DNG, NEF, ORF, PEF, RAF, RW2, and X3F.

When present in a file, Photos parses camera, lens, focal length, aperture, exposure time, ISO, GPS, and date-taken metadata. That information supports timeline, map, and search features, but it can also reveal where and when an image was made. Review the metadata before sharing a library or enabling remote access.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

RAW thumbnail caveat

Some RAW thumbnails depend on an embedded preview and the decoder available for that format. A file may remain safely stored and its metadata may be readable even when a thumbnail is unavailable or delayed. If a RAW image appears without a preview, verify the original file in the source folder before treating it as lost.

Remote access and privacy

ZimaOS Photos is described as self-hosted, and its local-AI processing is described as running on the user’s hardware. After the initial local connection, remote access can be enabled through ZimaClient, provided the remote-access feature is turned on in Settings > Network.

Remote access changes the security boundary: your phone and other clients can reach the library away from home, while location and date metadata may be available to anyone who gains account access. Use strong, unique account passwords, limit accounts to the people who need them, and disable remote access when you do not need it. No independent security audit is identified for this Photos implementation, so do not treat self-hosting as a guarantee of security.

Performance: what to expect

ZimaSpace publishes two performance figures as theoretical guidance, not independent benchmarks:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Claim Qualification
50+ MB/s phone transfer bandwidth Theoretical vendor figure published by ZimaSpace in 2026; actual throughput depends heavily on the phone, Wi‑Fi, protocol overhead, and storage.
100 MB/s or more hard-drive read/write speed Vendor guidance from ZimaSpace in 2026; it is not a result from an independent test of your particular disk or ZimaOS device.

Wi‑Fi quality is the main practical lever identified by the vendor. A nearby 5 GHz connection is generally preferable to a distant or congested 2.4 GHz connection, although walls, interference, router capacity, phone hardware, and simultaneous network traffic can still reduce speed. Keep the phone close to the access point, avoid starting the first run during a busy network period, and let the transfer proceed in the foreground if your phone pauses background work.

To maintain the grip and prevent accidental falls, it's a good practice to periodically reapply pressure to the suction cup.

Troubleshoot the common failure points

ZimaOS does not appear in ZimaClient

  • Confirm the ZimaOS device is powered on and has a network link.
  • Confirm the phone is on the same Wi‑Fi network for first discovery.
  • Move off a guest or isolated Wi‑Fi network.
  • Close and reopen ZimaClient, then repeat the local scan.

The first backup is taking too long

Large selections, videos, and Live Photos naturally take longer because every selected item must be transferred. Keep the phone near the router, use Wi‑Fi, and avoid switching to a congested or weak connection. The vendor identifies Wi‑Fi quality as the primary practical factor, so changing the network path is more useful than repeatedly restarting the app.

The destination is full

Open the backup options and check the available-space indicator. Move the destination to a dedicated disk or RAID space with adequate capacity, then allow the existing job to finish or reconfigure it according to the app’s prompts. Do not delete the source photos from the phone until you have verified that the files and their expected albums are present on ZimaOS Photos.

Files are in storage but missing from Photos

Open Photos settings and confirm that the exact Phone Backup folder is listed as a source. If the folder was changed, add the new path and allow indexing to finish. Remember that indexing does not relocate files; an incorrect source path can leave a complete backup invisible in the Photos interface.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A new phone is replacing the old one

Before wiping or trading in the old phone, open ZimaClient and let its final backup finish. Verify recent photos in the ZimaOS destination and Photos library. Install ZimaClient on the replacement phone, sign in to the intended account, select the albums, and choose a destination that will not merge unrelated libraries accidentally.

A repeatable setup checklist

  1. Power on ZimaOS and connect it to the network.
  2. Put the phone and ZimaOS on the same Wi‑Fi network.
  3. Install and open ZimaClient.
  4. Discover the device and sign in.
  5. Select iOS albums, excluding screenshots or downloads if desired.
  6. Choose a dedicated disk or RAID destination and check free space.
  7. Start the initial backup and keep the phone near the router.
  8. Enable automatic backup and decide whether cellular data is allowed.
  9. In Photos, add the Phone Backup folder as a source.
  10. Verify recent files, album coverage, and metadata before deleting anything from the phone.

The Bottom Line

For a dependable ZimaOS photo archive, use ZimaClient on the phone, complete the first connection over the same Wi‑Fi network, select only the albums you need, and store the backup on a dedicated disk or redundant pool. Enable automatic backup after verifying the destination, then add that folder to Photos so it is indexed without duplication.
