Set up Yoti by installing the official app, verifying your mobile number, creating a five-digit PIN, completing the selfie or liveness prompt, and adding a valid identity document when requested. When a website or organisation asks for Yoti, open the app, scan its QR code or follow the request, inspect the attributes it wants, and approve only the information you intend to share.
This guide explains the preparation, the exact checks Yoti performs, accepted-document limitations, privacy terms, failure recovery, and the difference between using an existing Yoti Digital ID and completing a one-time document-and-selfie check.

What Yoti does in a digital ID check
Yoti creates a verified Digital ID tied to you rather than merely to a password or an email address. The consumer setup is presented as three actions: “Take a quick selfie”, “Add your ID document”, and “Get your verified Digital ID.” Yoti’s current consumer product page reports 23 million worldwide downloads and 8 million UK downloads (figures stated by Yoti and accessed in 2026); those figures are adoption claims, not a guarantee that every service accepts Yoti or that every check will pass.

A participating website or organisation can ask Yoti for selected attributes, such as confirmation that you are over a certain age or your name. You approve the request in the app. The organisation receives the attributes you authorise through that share, not an unrestricted view of your whole identity record.

Prepare before installing the app
What you need
- A working mobile number that can receive a one-time SMS code.
- A phone with a functioning camera and enough light to photograph a document and your face.
- Your own identity details. Yoti’s App Terms require you to provide your own information and a genuine identity document.
- An accepted, valid document if the particular service requires document-backed verification.
Depending on the country and workflow, examples of accepted documents include a passport, driving licence, PASS card or national identity card. Yoti’s app listing says these document types are accepted from more than 200 countries, but acceptance is not universal: the exact document list can differ by jurisdiction, service and verification configuration. A document accepted for one request may not be accepted for another.
Install the official application
Download Yoti from the iOS App Store or Google Play. Check the publisher and app name before installing, especially if you reached the download page from a message or QR code. Do not create an account with someone else’s phone number or document; mismatched identity information can prevent verification and may violate the App Terms.
Create your Yoti Digital ID
- Enter and confirm your mobile number. Open the app, enter a genuine number you control, and submit the one-time SMS code. If the message is delayed, verify that the number includes the correct country code and that your phone can receive service messages.
- Create the account PIN. Yoti’s App Terms specify a five-digit PIN for future access to the app account. Choose a number that is not obvious and do not share it. Where your device supports it, enable Face ID or fingerprint login for convenience; the available biometric option depends on the phone and operating system.
- Complete the selfie or liveness prompt. Follow the on-screen instructions. The app may ask you to move your head, follow a movement cue or record a short response. These actions help show that a real person is present rather than a still image or replay.
- Add a genuine identity document when prompted. Photograph your own valid document. Some uses of Yoti may not require a document immediately, while a participating organisation’s identity-verification request can require one before it will accept your Digital ID.
- Finish the account setup. Once the requested checks pass, the app displays your verified Digital ID or the attributes available for sharing. The result is not a universal pass for every future service; each organisation can request different evidence and apply additional rules.
Complete a check on a website or in a service
- Start the request at the organisation’s website. Choose the Yoti option when it is offered. The site may display a QR code, a button that opens a Yoti request, or instructions to continue on your phone.
- Open Yoti and connect to the request. Scan the QR code with the app or follow the deep link supplied by the service. Use the app rather than typing identity details into an unexpected page.
- Read the requested attributes. The confirmation screen should identify what the organisation is asking to receive. Depending on the workflow, this can include identity details, an age-related attribute or other configured information. Do not approve automatically; make sure the request matches the service you intended to use.
- Approve or decline the share. Approving sends the selected attributes to the requesting organisation. Declining stops that share, although the organisation may not let you continue without an alternative verification method.
- Return to the service. The website normally reports whether it received the result. If it remains on a waiting screen, leave the Yoti app open until the hand-off completes, then retry the request from the original site rather than approving an unfamiliar second request.
What happens during document and biometric checks
Document capture and text extraction
Yoti starts with a photograph of the identity document. Optical Character Recognition (OCR) extracts fields such as your name, date of birth, address and document number. The service checks whether the document appears valid and, where possible, whether it has been reported lost or stolen. A blurry image, glare or a cropped edge can prevent the text from being read or the security features from being assessed.

A configured Identity Verification workflow can compare the face on the document with a live face capture. The liveness step is designed to show that the person in front of the camera is present during the check. It is not enough for a document to belong to you if the live capture is unclear or the movement instructions are not followed.

Address verification
Some organisations add an address check. Address verification is an optional configured check, so a failure can occur even when the document and selfie are acceptable. Read the service’s requirements and make sure the address information you submit is current and formatted consistently with the evidence requested.
How to photograph your document and face successfully
Document image checklist
- Use bright, even light. Avoid direct reflections from a lamp or window.
- Lay the document flat and keep every corner and all text inside the camera frame.
- Remove a wallet, plastic sleeve or cover that hides an edge, hologram or printed field.
- Hold the phone steady and wait for the app to confirm that the image is sharp.
- Use an undamaged, unexpired document. A cracked, heavily worn or expired document can fail validity or authenticity checks.
Selfie and liveness checklist
- Position the camera at eye level and keep your face fully visible.
- Use even lighting without a bright window behind you or a shadow across your face.
- Follow movement instructions slowly and exactly; do not guess at the requested motion.
- Keep the phone steady and remove anything that obscures your face if the prompt requires an unobstructed view.
These steps improve the quality of the capture; they cannot make an unsupported document type or an organisation-specific rule pass.
Which documents can you use?

Yoti’s app listing describes support for document types from more than 200 countries. That is a broad product statement, not a promise that every document in those countries will work in every check. If the app does not list your document, do not substitute another person’s document or alter an image; ask the requesting organisation which alternative verification route it accepts.

What you choose to share
You control the approval step for a Yoti data share. Inspect the requested attributes before confirming and decline requests that do not match the service or ask for more information than you expect. A share is directed to the requesting organisation; it is not a public profile.

What happens to the identity document
Yoti’s App Terms state that a genuine identity document may be added and that the document itself is not shared with an organisation through a Yoti data share. The organisation can receive the attributes configured for that request, such as a verified name or an age-related result, rather than the document image itself.
How long checking information is kept
The UK App Terms say information supplied during checking can be kept for up to 30 days and then encrypted. That statement applies to the UK terms and to information covered by the checking process; retention obligations can differ by service, country and the organisation’s own records. Read the notice shown for the particular request if you need to know what the organisation retains after Yoti reports a result.
Account security
Protect the five-digit PIN, keep your phone’s operating system updated, and use device biometric login only on a phone whose passcode and enrolled fingerprints or face data you control. Never approve a request you did not initiate. If a message pressures you to share a code or scan a QR code urgently, stop and open the service independently.
Why a Yoti check fails and what to do
The document image is rejected
Retake it in brighter, even light, remove glare and covers, include all four corners, and clean the camera lens. Confirm that the document is valid and undamaged. A partial frame or unreadable text can stop OCR and authenticity checks even when the document itself is genuine.

The selfie or liveness step is rejected
Move to a well-lit place, position the camera at eye level and repeat the prompt slowly. Follow each movement instruction rather than moving continuously. Keep your face inside the guide and avoid strong backlighting.
The face match fails
Make sure the live capture is of the same person named on the document and that the document photograph is clear. Remove glare from the document and repeat the live capture. If the organisation configured a stricter biometric check, it may reject an otherwise readable document; the organisation can tell you whether another route is available.
An address check fails
Check whether the request requires a current address and whether the evidence uses the same spelling and format as the details you entered. Address verification is an optional workflow check, so contact the requesting organisation if you need to correct an address or provide another form of evidence.

Do not create duplicate accounts with different details. Contact the requesting organisation first, because it controls the workflow and may need to reset the request. If the app directs you to Yoti support, use that support path and include the request or error reference without sending extra identity documents by ordinary email.
Choosing between an existing Digital ID and a one-time check
Some services offer two routes: use a Yoti Digital ID you already have, or complete a one-time document-and-selfie process. The better route depends on what you have already prepared and what the service requires.

If you already have a working Yoti account, start with the Digital ID option and verify the requested attributes. If you do not, the one-time route can be simpler when the service offers it, provided you have a supported document and a camera-ready phone.
For organisations implementing Yoti
Yoti’s current developer guidance offers ready-made Identity Verification and UK Identity Verification workflows, as well as a custom workflow. The documented checks can include an identity document, biometric face matching and optional address verification. A business should select only the checks needed for its legal or operational purpose, explain the requested attributes to users, and provide a recovery path when a legitimate user cannot complete a capture.

For a no-code Digital ID setup, Yoti’s guide describes registering in Yoti Hub, creating a QR-code page and asking users to scan that page with the Yoti app. Test the complete hand-off on the devices and in the countries you intend to support. A QR page should identify the organisation and expected request so users can distinguish it from an unsolicited code.
