For the best Blu-ray picture and sound on Xbox Series X, first confirm your console has a disc drive, connect it directly to a capable 4K HDR TV with the included Ultra High Speed HDMI cable, and choose audio output that your TV, receiver, or soundbar can decode. Then check the Xbox’s reported TV capabilities and the TV’s input settings.

Check that your Series X can play physical discs

Microsoft lists a 4K UHD Blu-ray optical drive on disc-drive Xbox Series X models, but its all-digital Series X has no optical drive. Check your exact model or edition before buying a Blu-ray. Microsoft’s Xbox Series X specifications distinguish the models.

Connect the Xbox and verify 4K and HDR

  1. Connect the console to the TV. Use the Ultra High Speed HDMI cable supplied with Series X. Connecting directly to the TV is a useful starting point because it avoids an AV receiver or other device interfering with the video signal.
  2. Check the Xbox’s display report. Open the Guide and go to Settings > General > TV & display options > 4K TV details. Review which capabilities Xbox detects for the connected display.
  3. Enable the TV’s enhanced input mode if needed. Some TVs enable their highest-resolution or HDR features only on selected HDMI ports, or require an enhanced, UHD, or HDR mode to be enabled for that input. The setting name and location vary by TV, so consult its manual.

Xbox’s setup guidance recommends using the supplied cable and checking the TV’s capabilities and input settings. Xbox Series X supports 4K video over HDMI; some of Xbox’s most advanced features require HDMI 2.1. The TV, selected input, cable path, and any device between the console and TV all affect which signal is available. Xbox Wire’s display and connection guide was published November 6, 2020; TV settings and menu labels may differ on current models.

Choose audio output for your TV, receiver, or soundbar

Match the console’s audio format to what the device receiving audio over HDMI supports. A format listed as supported by Xbox will not necessarily be accepted or decoded by every television, receiver, or soundbar.

For a receiver or soundbar that supports Atmos or DTS:X

  1. Open Profile & system > Settings > General > Volume & audio output.
  2. Under HDMI audio, choose Bitstream out.
  3. Under Bitstream format, select a format supported by the connected audio device, such as Dolby Atmos or DTS:X where available.

Microsoft lists Dolby TrueHD with Atmos, DTS 5.1, Dolby Digital 5.1, and up to 7.1-channel L-PCM among the console’s supported audio formats. These specifications describe console capability, not guaranteed compatibility throughout your setup. Check the format support of the specific TV, receiver, or soundbar. Microsoft’s specifications and Xbox Wire’s audio setup guidance provide the format and settings details.

For headphones

Xbox Wire’s guide directs headphone users to the Headset audio section of Volume & audio output and to choose an available format there. It does not establish one best format for every headset; select an option supported by your equipment.

Should you connect the Xbox to the TV or the receiver?

When possible, connect the Xbox directly to the TV for video and return audio to a compatible receiver or home-theater system over ARC or eARC. Xbox Wire recommends this approach to help avoid video compatibility problems in an intermediate device. ARC/eARC requires compatible connections and equipment; verify support on both the TV and the audio system.

Receiver passthrough can also work, but the receiver and both HDMI connections in the chain must support the video signal you want. If 4K or HDR is missing, connecting the Xbox directly to the TV temporarily can help identify whether the receiver or another intermediary is the cause.

Troubleshoot missing 4K or HDR

  • Check display detection: In TV and display options, make sure display detection is set to Auto-detect, rather than manually selecting HDMI or DVI.
  • Check the TV port: Confirm that the selected HDMI input supports the desired 4K or HDR capability and that any required enhanced-input or HDR mode is enabled.
  • Check HDCP: If content fails to play or display correctly, confirm HDCP 2.2 is enabled where required by the TV or connected equipment.
  • Check the signal chain: Use the included cable, update TV and AV receiver firmware, and connect the Xbox directly to the TV temporarily to isolate intermediary equipment.
  • Recover from a bad signal: If enabling 4K or HDR produces a blank screen or unusual colors, Xbox’s troubleshooting guidance suggests disabling the setting that is causing the problem. Disable VRR if it causes visual corruption. These are compatibility troubleshooting steps, not picture-quality improvements for Blu-ray movies.

For current device-specific settings, use the TV and audio-device manuals alongside Xbox’s display troubleshooting guidance.

What to check if surround sound or Atmos does not work

  • Confirm the receiving device supports the format selected in the Xbox Bitstream format menu.
  • Verify that audio is reaching the intended receiver or soundbar over a compatible HDMI connection, including ARC/eARC if the console is connected directly to the TV.
  • If your setup does not support the selected bitstream format, choose another format supported by the connected device.

The exact options available within the current Blu-ray app, including any disc-specific audio controls, are not established here. Avoid assuming the app has a particular passthrough setting; use the console’s audio output settings and the manuals for your equipment.
