To make a child ask before buying an Xbox game or add-on, sign in on the console with an adult Microsoft account that is a family organizer, open the child’s Xbox privacy settings, and turn on Ask a parent under Buy & download. The setting applies to purchases made through Microsoft billing. For a shared console, you can add a separate passkey requirement, and you can manage spending from Microsoft Family Safety on the web or in its app.
What the Xbox purchase-control setting does
Ask a parent is the child-specific approval control for purchases from the Microsoft Store on Xbox. When it is on, the child must request approval instead of completing a covered purchase independently. The request is handled by a family organizer, who can approve or decline it.

The setting is attached to the child’s account, not merely to the physical Xbox. That means the child’s Microsoft account must be part of your Microsoft family group, and the adult changing the setting must be signed in with organizer permissions. A console passkey, described later, is a different control that protects purchases made by any profile on a shared Xbox.

Before you start: accounts and family membership
Use an organizer account
Only a family organizer can manage a child’s purchase permissions, add money to the child’s account, and view spending information. A regular family member can submit a purchase request but cannot configure the family’s spending controls. Microsoft explains these role differences in its Family Safety roles and permissions guide.
Confirm the child is in your Microsoft family
The child needs a Microsoft account that has been added to the same family group as the organizer. If the account is not listed under family members, add it before trying to change Xbox privacy settings. Age information on the account can also affect which default privacy profile Microsoft offers, although you can still reach the purchase setting directly.
Sign the child into the Xbox
On the Xbox, open the guide, choose Sign in, select Add new, and sign in with the child’s Microsoft account. Microsoft’s device instructions are available in its guide to connecting a device to a Microsoft account. Once connected, the Xbox should appear among the child’s devices, which helps Family Safety associate activity with the correct account.
- Have the child’s Microsoft email address and password available.
- Check that the adult account currently signed in is the organizer account, not the child’s profile.
- Use the same family group in the Xbox settings and in Family Safety; separate Microsoft accounts will not share the setting.
Turn on “Ask a parent” on the Xbox
- Press the Xbox button to open the guide.
- Open Profile & system (the account icon), then choose Settings.
- Go to Account > Family settings.
- Select Manage family members and choose the child’s account.
- Open Privacy & online safety > Xbox Live privacy > View details & customize.
- Choose Buy & download.
- Set Ask a parent to On.
This is Microsoft’s documented console procedure in Require kids to ask before buying from the Microsoft Store on Xbox. The change is made for the selected child, so repeat the process for each child account that needs approval.
Using a default privacy profile
After you open the Xbox Live privacy controls, selecting Child defaults or Teen defaults can also enable the purchase-approval behavior. Defaults change more than buying permissions, however. If you want to preserve custom communication, multiplayer, or content settings, leave those settings as they are and switch on Ask a parent under Buy & download instead.
Test the workflow
After saving the setting, sign in with the child’s profile and begin a small Microsoft Store purchase without completing checkout. The account should present a request-for-approval step rather than silently charging the organizer’s payment method. Approve or decline the request from the organizer account, and check that the child receives the corresponding result. Testing before a child shops independently catches account and family-group mistakes while you are still at the console.

Manage approval and spending in Microsoft Family Safety
You can manage the same family’s spending from Microsoft Family Safety on the web or in the Family Safety app. Open the child’s profile and locate Manage spending. Microsoft documents a Require approval for every purchase toggle, along with spending activity and purchase notifications, in its Spending limits in Family Safety guidance.
- Sign in to Family Safety with the adult organizer account.
- Select the child’s profile.
- Open Manage spending.
- Turn on Require approval for every purchase, if that option is shown.
- Review spending activity and enable purchase notifications according to the controls offered in your version of the app or website.
Web and app labels are not always identical. The important destination is the child’s profile and its Manage spending area. Family Safety also describes approval prompts for purchases above a child’s age limit or when the child has no remaining account funds; the exact prompt depends on the purchase and account state.
Which control should you use?
| Control | Where you configure it | What it is for | Important boundary |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ask a parent | Xbox: the selected child’s Xbox Live privacy settings | Requires the child to request approval for covered Microsoft Store purchases | Applies to the child account and Microsoft-billed transactions |
| Require approval for every purchase | Family Safety web or app, under the child’s Manage spending | Centralizes approval, spending activity, and purchase notifications | Labels and available prompts can vary between the app and website |
| Passkey required | Xbox: account sign-in, security and passkey settings | Requires authentication before purchases made through profiles on a shared console | It is a console-wide safeguard, not the child account’s approval workflow |
| Account balance | Organizer adds money to the child’s Microsoft account | Provides a limited amount of credit for games and in-app purchases | It does not turn on approval; balance limits vary by region |
For most families, turn on Ask a parent first. Use Family Safety when you prefer to handle requests and spending from a phone or browser. Add the passkey requirement when several people use the same Xbox and you want an authentication barrier for every profile.
The two approval settings serve the same general goal but are managed in different places. The Xbox control is convenient when you are already configuring the child’s console profile. Family Safety is useful for reviewing activity away from the Xbox, checking whether a request or charge belongs to the correct child, and receiving purchase notifications. If both controls are available, using both gives you an on-console rule plus a remote view of spending; neither changes the other privacy settings automatically.
How approval requests are triggered
Family Safety can ask for approval in more than one situation. A purchase may require approval because you enabled approval for every purchase, because it exceeds the child’s applicable age limit, or because the child has no remaining Microsoft account funds. These conditions can overlap, so do not assume that adding credit alone removes the approval requirement.

Add a passkey for purchases on a shared Xbox
A child-specific approval setting can be undermined if another profile remains signed in or if a shared console allows purchases without reauthentication. Microsoft’s separate purchase safeguard requires a passkey before a purchase is made through profiles on that console.
- Press the Xbox button.
- Go to System > Settings > Account.
- Open Sign-in, security & passkey.
- Choose Change my sign-in & security preferences > Customize.
- Select Ask for my passkey to make purchases.
- Set it to Passkey required.
The full route is listed in Microsoft’s Prevent unauthorized purchases from Microsoft Store instructions. This setting asks for the configured sign-in credential; it does not send a child’s request to an organizer and should not be treated as a replacement for Ask a parent.
Use the passkey especially when siblings, guests, or adults use the same hardware. It protects purchases made through profiles on that console, while Ask a parent follows the child wherever that account is used. Keep adult credentials private and sign out profiles that children should not be able to select.

Use a controlled Microsoft account balance (optional)
An organizer can add money to a child’s Microsoft account. Microsoft says that balance can be used for games and in-app purchases. This approach lets you give a fixed amount of credit rather than allowing purchases to draw directly from a stored payment method.
To add funds, use Microsoft’s Add money to your family member’s Microsoft account instructions. The organizer chooses the child’s account and the amount available through the supported funding flow. You can also provide an Xbox or Microsoft Store gift card if that option is available in your region, then redeem it to the child’s account.
Funding is a budgeting choice, not a permission control. Keep Ask a parent enabled if every purchase should require approval, even when the child has credit. Microsoft publishes regional rules and limits in Limits on the money in your Microsoft account; do not assume another country’s balance ceiling or gift-card rules apply to you.

Before adding money, decide whether the balance is a one-time allowance or an ongoing spending method. Review the balance in Family Safety and account activity so you know when funds are used. A gift card or organizer-added credit does not activate parental controls, does not guarantee a purchase will be approved, and may be subject to regional redemption and balance limits.
What Microsoft’s controls do not cover
Purchases billed outside Microsoft
Microsoft family spending controls do not apply to in-app purchases processed by a non-Microsoft billing platform. Microsoft states that Ask to Buy and Add Funds are unavailable for those transactions, and the purchase may not appear in Microsoft spending history. The app publisher’s own billing settings or family controls may apply instead. See In-app purchases with non-Microsoft billing platforms for the limitation.
This distinction matters for games and apps that open an external checkout, use a platform-specific payment system, or otherwise do not send the charge through Microsoft. A successful Xbox setting cannot force approval on a billing system it does not control. If a child can buy inside an app without an approval request, identify the company shown on the checkout screen and configure that company’s family or payment restrictions.
Other profiles and saved credentials
Ask a parent follows the child’s account. If an adult profile is used to make the purchase, the child’s approval rule is not involved. On a shared console, sign out profiles that should not be available to children and use the passkey safeguard for an additional authentication check.

The child does not appear in Manage family members
- Sign out and back in with the adult Microsoft account that owns the family group.
- Verify that the child’s account was added to that family group, rather than to a different adult’s group.
- On the Xbox, sign in with the child’s account through Add new, then revisit family settings.
- Confirm that the console is online so account and family changes can synchronize.
You cannot edit the purchase option
Check the role of the signed-in adult. Family members cannot manage organizer permissions. Switch to the organizer account, open the selected child’s profile, and return to Privacy & online safety > Xbox Live privacy > View details & customize > Buy & download.

Console updates can rename or rearrange menus. Start from Profile & system > Settings > Account > Family settings, select the child, and look for the Xbox privacy purchase controls. If the console offers Child defaults or Teen defaults, those profiles may enable the approval behavior, but review the other privacy changes before accepting them.

A purchase went through without a request
- Check which Microsoft account was signed in when the purchase was made.
- Confirm that the transaction used Microsoft billing rather than an external in-app billing platform.
- Verify that Ask a parent is still On for the correct child account.
- On a shared Xbox, enable Passkey required and avoid leaving an adult profile unlocked.
- Review Family Safety spending activity and Microsoft account order history to identify the billing account.
The child cannot complete an approved purchase
An approval only addresses permission. The account may still need an available balance, an allowed payment method, or a purchase that is eligible in the child’s region. If the purchase is billed by another platform, follow that publisher’s payment and family-control process instead of expecting Microsoft’s approval request to appear.
A practical setup checklist
- Adult is signed in as a Microsoft family organizer.
- Child has a Microsoft account in the organizer’s family group.
- Child’s account has been added to the Xbox and the console appears among connected devices.
- Ask a parent is set to On under the child’s Buy & download privacy control.
- Family Safety’s Require approval for every purchase is enabled if you want web or app management.
- A passkey is required for purchases if the Xbox is shared among profiles.
- You know which purchases use Microsoft billing and which use an external billing platform.
- Any account balance or gift-card credit is treated as a spending limit, not as a substitute for approval.
- You have tested a purchase request with the child’s profile and confirmed the organizer receives and can answer it.
Bottom line
For a child who must ask before buying an Xbox game or add-on, enable Ask a parent in the child’s Xbox privacy settings: Profile & system > Settings > Account > Family settings > Manage family members > child > Privacy & online safety > Xbox Live privacy > View details & customize > Buy & download. Use Family Safety for remote spending management, add a passkey on shared consoles, and remember that non-Microsoft billing requires the app publisher’s own controls.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I require my child to ask before buying on Xbox?
Use an organizer account on the Xbox, open Profile & system > Settings > Account > Family settings > Manage family members, select the child, then open Privacy & online safety > Xbox Live privacy > View details & customize > Buy & download. Turn Ask a parent to On.

Yes. Sign in to Microsoft Family Safety as the family organizer, open the child’s profile, and find Manage spending. Turn on Require approval for every purchase and review spending activity or purchase notifications available in the app.
Does Ask a parent block every purchase inside every Xbox game?
It applies to covered purchases billed through Microsoft. In-app purchases handled by a non-Microsoft billing platform are outside Microsoft family spending controls and may require the publisher’s own family or payment settings.
Is a passkey the same as Ask a parent?
No. Ask a parent is tied to the child’s account and routes a purchase request to an organizer. Passkey required is a shared-console authentication safeguard that can protect purchases made through profiles on that Xbox.
Can I give my child money without giving unrestricted access to my card?
An organizer can add money to the child’s Microsoft account, or redeem an Xbox or Microsoft Store gift card where available. The balance can be used for games and in-app purchases, but it does not replace the approval setting and regional limits vary.

Why did the child’s purchase not trigger an approval request?
Check that the child’s account, not an adult profile, was used; confirm Ask a parent is still on; identify whether Microsoft or another company billed the transaction; and review Family Safety activity and Microsoft order history. External billing may not support Microsoft approval prompts.
The Bottom Line
Turn on Ask a parent under the child’s Xbox Buy & download privacy setting, then use Family Safety for remote spending oversight. Add a passkey on shared consoles and remember that purchases billed outside Microsoft need the publisher’s controls.
