To link a teen’s WhatsApp account to a parent or guardian, start on the teen’s phone: open Settings > Parental controls > Continue. Confirm the teen’s birthday, then scan the QR code shown on that phone using WhatsApp on the adult’s phone. The adult verifies they are at least 18 and creates a six-digit parent PIN; finish on the teen’s phone by entering the PIN and reviewing the settings. Both people must agree to link their accounts, and WhatsApp is rolling the feature out gradually, so the option may not be available to every family yet.
Before you start
- The teen must be 13–17, and the parent or guardian must be at least 18, according to WhatsApp’s teen parental-controls guidance.
- Install the latest WhatsApp version on both iPhone or Android phones.
- Both the teen and adult must agree to link their accounts. Setup requires both phones and a six-digit parent PIN.
- The feature is rolling out gradually. WhatsApp does not list a complete set of supported countries or a rollout timetable, so a missing menu option may mean it has not reached your account or region yet.
How to link the teen’s account to a parent’s phone
- On the teen’s phone, open WhatsApp and tap Settings > Parental controls > Continue.
- Enter the teen’s birthday and confirm the age shown. Continue to begin linking the account.
- On the parent’s phone, scan the QR code displayed on the teen’s screen. Tap the WhatsApp link that appears.
- Continue through the adult verification, then create and confirm a six-digit parent PIN. WhatsApp says the PIN is needed to access and change the teen’s privacy settings; keep it private and do not share it with the teen.
- Return to the teen’s phone, enter the PIN, and review or change the settings. The teen is prompted to read about the experience and confirm the link.
If Parental controls does not appear, first make sure both phones have the latest WhatsApp version and that the teen and adult meet the age requirements. Availability is gradual, so meeting those requirements does not guarantee the option is available yet.

What parents can manage
WhatsApp’s controls cover selected privacy choices, some features, and activity alerts. They are not a complete monitoring dashboard, and the available labels or defaults may change; use the current in-app screen as the source of truth.
Privacy settings
Parents can manage privacy settings that determine who can see the teen’s information and contact them. The teen can view the settings on their own phone by opening Settings > Privacy. A parent can open Settings > Parental controls and use the PIN to manage the controls. WhatsApp says settings are safe by default, and some less restrictive changes require parent approval.

Status, Channels, and Meta AI
- Status: Parents can choose the audience for the teen’s Status updates. WhatsApp describes the default audience as the teen’s contacts.
- Channels: Parents can allow all channels, limit the teen to parent-approved channels, or block channel viewing; they can also control whether the teen may create channels. WhatsApp describes its defaults as allowing all channels and channel creation. Changing these controls does not remove channels the teen already follows or has created.
- Meta AI: Parents can choose Standard or Limited. Limited further restricts topics; Meta AI features that use Private Processing are unavailable when this setting is selected.
These controls and their defaults are subject to change. Check the teen’s parental-controls screen for the current options and effects before changing a setting.
Activity and notifications
Parents can view selected activity and choose which types of notifications to receive. Examples WhatsApp gives include the teen adding contacts, creating or joining groups, and changing account details such as their name or profile picture. These are activity-level signals, not access to the content of chats or calls.

Can parents read the teen’s WhatsApp messages?
No. WhatsApp says end-to-end encryption keeps personal messages and calls between the people communicating, and that “No one outside of the chat, not even the parent or WhatsApp, can read, listen to, or share them.” Parental controls do not provide a way to read personal message content or listen to calls.

Make the settings part of an ongoing conversation
Talk with the teen about why you are linking accounts, what the selected settings do, and which alerts you will see. WhatsApp encourages ongoing conversations about safe behavior and points families to teen-specific safety resources; account linking is a tool for managing settings, not a substitute for that conversation.
