What’s actually slowing this PC down?

The safest setup depends on whether you need a simple file repository or an application-managed service. For a standalone repository, enable Apache mod_dav and mod_dav_fs only on a dedicated directory, authenticate every DAV location, and give Apache’s configured User and Group read, write, and traverse access. For Nextcloud, do the opposite: leave Apache’s WebDAV module disabled for the Nextcloud tree because Nextcloud provides its own SabreDAV server.

WebDAV is an HTTP extension for remote file operations. It is not a separate disk or hardware device. A Linux client such as davfs2 can make the remote collection appear as a local mount, but the server still enforces authentication, application permissions, and filesystem ownership.

There are two valid designs, and combining them on the same path is a common source of authentication and permission failures.
Standalone Apache repository
Use Apache when you want a focused DAV endpoint backed by a directory on the VPS. Apache authenticates users with a web-server policy such as an htpasswd file or Digest Authentication, while the Apache worker account owns or can write the repository. You choose the URL and directory layout.

Nextcloud WebDAV
Use Nextcloud when you need user accounts, shares, synchronization, quotas, and application-level controls. Nextcloud’s built-in SabreDAV service handles WebDAV requests. Do not enable Apache mod_webdav for the Nextcloud directory; the two DAV implementations can conflict.
| Decision point | Standalone Apache | Nextcloud |
|---|---|---|
| Authorization owner | Apache authentication and authorization directives | Nextcloud accounts, shares, and application passwords |
| Filesystem identity | Apache’s configured User and Group |
Nextcloud’s application and data-directory ownership model |
| Client URL | A path selected in the Apache virtual host | /remote.php/dav/files/USERNAME/, including any installation subdirectory |
| Operational features | Minimal remote file repository | Synchronization, sharing, and application controls |
| Maintenance | Apache modules, TLS, authentication files, and filesystem permissions | Nextcloud updates, PHP runtime, database, web-server integration, and application configuration |
Prerequisites and a permission plan
- A Linux VPS with a public DNS name if clients will connect over the internet.
- Apache HTTP Server for the standalone design, or an installed Nextcloud instance for the application design.
- A dedicated repository directory that is separate from executable application code.
- HTTPS before sending Basic credentials or application passwords over the network. Apache recommends Digest Authentication, or Basic Authentication over SSL as an alternative.
- A test account and a client such as
davfs2, a desktop file manager, a cURL-based script, or the official Nextcloud client.
Decide in advance who should access each directory. A shared Apache DAV location authenticated with Require valid-user lets every authenticated account reach the same repository. If each person must be restricted to a folder, create separate locations and filesystem directories, then authorize each account only for its own location.
Remember that files created through standalone Apache DAV inherit the Apache runtime identity. Administrators therefore need a deliberate inspection and backup plan: use service-account-aware backup jobs or carefully designed groups and ACLs rather than assuming the person who uploaded a file will own it on the VPS.
Set up a standalone Apache WebDAV repository
1. Install and enable the required modules
Install Apache and the distribution packages that provide mod_dav and its filesystem provider, mod_dav_fs. Enable the authentication module required by your policy, authorization support, and TLS. Package names and module-enabling commands differ between distributions, so use the package manager and Apache module helper for the operating system running your VPS.
On Debian-family systems, the usual workflow is to enable the modules in the Apache configuration, then verify the result with the distribution’s module-listing command. Do not proceed until both DAV modules and the authentication and TLS modules you intend to use are loaded.
2. Create a repository outside application code
Create a directory such as /srv/webdav or a subdirectory beneath it. Keep it away from the document root and from PHP, CGI, or other executable content. Apache’s documentation treats a DAV repository as private to Apache; changing its contents outside the Apache ownership model can create inconsistent permissions and locking behavior.

For separate users, a layout such as /srv/webdav/alice and /srv/webdav/bob makes the access boundary visible. Do not give the DAV process write access to the entire VPS or to unrelated application directories.
3. Match ownership to Apache’s runtime account
Read the User and Group directives in the active Apache configuration. The names are distribution-specific. Grant that identity the minimum permissions needed to traverse the repository and create, modify, rename, and delete files beneath it. Apply the permissions to every parent directory in the path as well.
Test the complete lifecycle, not just directory listing. A repository can appear readable while uploads fail because the service account lacks write permission, or uploads can work while renames fail because a parent directory is not writable. Avoid broad mode changes such as making the directory world-writable.
4. Enable DAV only on the intended path
The following is a pattern for a TLS virtual host with a separate location for Alice. Adapt the certificate paths, hostname, repository path, and authentication file to your server:
<VirtualHost *:443>
ServerName files.example.com
SSLEngine on
Alias /dav/alice /srv/webdav/alice
<Directory /srv/webdav/alice>
Dav On
Options None
AllowOverride None
AuthType Basic
AuthName "WebDAV"
AuthUserFile /etc/apache2/.htpasswd-webdav
Require user alice
</Directory>
</VirtualHost>
Dav On enables Apache’s default filesystem provider for that directory. If several users share one repository, use the same location with an authorization rule appropriate to your policy. If users have separate folders, repeat the location pattern and change both the filesystem path and the Require user rule. Enable only the paths you intend to publish.
For a password-file setup, create the file with Apache’s password utility and add accounts individually. Digest Authentication is another option. Whichever method you choose, every DAV-enabled location must require authentication.

5. Put transport security before credentials
Do not publish an unauthenticated DAV endpoint. Basic credentials are suitable only when the connection is protected by HTTPS. Install a certificate trusted by clients, redirect or block plaintext HTTP, and restrict accounts to the repository they need. For internet-facing services, also monitor free disk space: DAV methods can create, copy, move, and delete content, and a large or deeply recursive PROPFIND request can consume resources.
Set request-depth and request-body limits where your Apache version and surrounding proxy permit it. Keep logs for authentication failures, unexpected methods, and storage growth. Treat the repository as writable infrastructure, not as a harmless static directory.

6. Test configuration and file operations
- Run the Apache configuration test supplied by your distribution.
- List loaded modules and confirm the DAV, authentication, authorization, and TLS modules are present.
- Reload or restart Apache after the configuration test succeeds.
- With a test account, perform an authenticated
PROPFIND, upload a small file, rename it, and delete it. - Inspect the resulting file and confirm that its owner and group are the expected Apache service identity.
- Try the same URL with a second account and verify that it cannot enter another user’s directory or reach a parent path.
These checks catch the most important errors: missing modules, an incorrect Alias, authentication that is applied to the wrong context, and filesystem permissions that allow listing but not modification.
Give each Apache user access only to their own folder
Web-server authentication and Unix filesystem permissions solve different parts of the problem. A password file proves who the user is; the Apache authorization directive decides which URL that identity may use; the filesystem permissions decide what the Apache process can do after authorization.
Separate URL and directory per user
Create one URL-to-directory mapping per user, for example /dav/alice to /srv/webdav/alice and /dav/bob to /srv/webdav/bob. Use Require user alice on Alice’s directory and Require user bob on Bob’s. Do not expose a writable parent location that contains both directories, because a user who can traverse that parent may be able to discover or modify siblings.
Plan administration and backups
Because Apache creates files as its service account, an administrator’s normal shell account may not be able to edit them directly. Use a backup process that can read the service-owned files, or design an administrative group and ACL policy that grants only the required maintenance access. Do not solve the problem by making every file world-readable and world-writable.

Configure Nextcloud without Apache WebDAV
1. Leave Apache’s DAV module off for Nextcloud
Nextcloud’s administration guidance is explicit: its SabreDAV server handles WebDAV, so Apache’s mod_webdav is not needed for the Nextcloud tree and must be disabled there. Keep the Apache integration required by your installation, such as URL rewriting and, when applicable, proxy support for PHP-FPM.
If a parent virtual host applies authentication rules, ensure they do not intercept Nextcloud’s own DAV authentication. Nextcloud’s Apache example uses Dav off in the Nextcloud directory. When a parent authentication rule conflicts with Nextcloud’s Basic authentication, its configuration documents using Satisfy Any so the request can be handled by the appropriate layer.
<Directory /var/www/nextcloud>
Dav off
Satisfy Any
</Directory>
Use Satisfy Any only when you have a real parent-authentication conflict and understand the resulting access rules. It is not a substitute for configuring Nextcloud accounts and sharing permissions.
2. Use the correct DAV endpoint
Third-party clients should connect to:
https://cloud.example.com/remote.php/dav/files/USERNAME/
If Nextcloud is installed below a subdirectory, include that directory in the URL. Replace USERNAME with the Nextcloud account name; keep the trailing slash because some clients construct relative paths from it.
3. Create an application password
In Nextcloud, open Personal settings → Security and create an application password for the client or mount. Use that value instead of the account’s main password. The application password can be revoked independently if a laptop, script, or mount configuration is lost, without changing the user’s primary login password.
4. Enable the site and validate it
Enable the Nextcloud site using your distribution’s Apache site-management tools, restart or reload Apache, and test the DAV endpoint with the application password. Confirm that the account sees only its permitted files and shares. Do not add a second Apache DAV provider in front of the same path.
Best Value
Mount Nextcloud WebDAV on Linux with per-user credentials
Nextcloud documents davfs2 for Linux mounts. The following Debian/Ubuntu sequence creates a user-owned secrets file and does not require root for a correctly configured mount:
apt-get install davfs2
usermod -aG davfs2 <username>
mkdir ~/nextcloud
mkdir ~/.davfs2
cp /etc/davfs2/secrets ~/.davfs2/secrets
chown <linux_username>:<linux_username> ~/.davfs2/secrets
chmod 600 ~/.davfs2/secrets
Log out and back in after changing group membership if the session does not yet recognize the davfs2 group. Edit ~/.davfs2/secrets and add the DAV URL, the Nextcloud username, and the application password on the line format expected by your davfs2 installation. Keep the file owner-only readable; chmod 600 prevents other local users from reading the credential.
Add an /etc/fstab entry similar to this one:
https://example.com/nextcloud/remote.php/dav/files/USERNAME/ /home/<linux_username>/nextcloud davfs user,rw,auto 0 0
Then test the mount:
mount ~/nextcloud
umount ~/nextcloud
Use noauto instead of auto when you want to mount manually rather than during normal filesystem processing. A successful mount should allow the Linux user to browse and modify the files permitted by Nextcloud without running the mount command as root.
Understand the permission layers
| Layer | Standalone Apache | Nextcloud |
|---|---|---|
| Network encryption | HTTPS protects the DAV connection and Basic credentials | HTTPS protects the Nextcloud DAV connection and application password |
| Identity | Apache password file, Digest, or another configured web-server provider | Nextcloud account and application password |
| URL authorization | Apache Require rules select users or groups for each location |
Nextcloud shares and account permissions select visible files |
| Server-side file access | Apache’s User/Group must read, write, and traverse the repository |
Nextcloud’s web and data-directory ownership must remain consistent with the installation |
| Local client protection | Protect any client credential store | Protect ~/.davfs2/secrets with owner-only permissions |
A failure at one layer can look like a failure at another. A valid password cannot overcome a missing filesystem write permission, and a writable directory cannot make an unauthorized URL accessible.
Troubleshoot common failures
Authentication succeeds but uploads fail
- Check the Apache
UserandGroupvalues, not the shell account that administers the VPS. - Verify write permission on the repository and execute permission on every parent directory.
- Confirm that the DAV directive is applied to the directory actually selected by the URL.
- Inspect Apache’s error log while performing a small upload.
Users can see one another’s folders
Check whether all accounts are authorized with Require valid-user on one shared location. Replace that broad rule with separate locations and Require user or group-specific authorization, and ensure the parent directory is not itself exposed as a browsable DAV root.
Recommended Free Tools
Nextcloud reports DAV or login conflicts
Look for Apache mod_webdav enabled on the Nextcloud path and turn it off there. Then inspect parent-directory authentication rules; Nextcloud’s own DAV Basic authentication must be allowed to process the request.
davfs2 reports a temporary resource problem while creating files
Nextcloud documents trying use_locks 0 in /etc/davfs2/davfs2.conf for this symptom. Apply the change deliberately and retest a small create, rename, and delete sequence.
A self-signed certificate is rejected
Import the certificate into davfs2’s certificate directory and configure the matching servercert setting. A trusted public certificate is usually simpler for internet-facing services; never disable certificate verification merely to make a mount work.
The mount works manually but not automatically
- Check that the mount point exists and is owned by the intended Linux user.
- Confirm the URL in
/etc/fstabincludes the full Nextcloud subdirectory, if one exists. - Use
noautowhile diagnosing, then re-enableautoonly after manual mounting is reliable. - Verify that the secrets file is readable by the mounting user and has mode
600.
Security and operations checklist
- Use HTTPS before exposing DAV to the public internet.
- Authenticate every Apache DAV location; never rely on an obscure URL as protection.
- Keep a standalone repository separate from application code.
- Give Apache only the minimum filesystem access required for the repository.
- For per-user isolation, pair separate URL authorization with separate directories.
- For Nextcloud, keep Apache
mod_webdavdisabled on the Nextcloud tree. - Use revocable Nextcloud application passwords for third-party clients.
- Protect
davfs2credentials with owner-only permissions. - Test
PROPFIND, upload, rename, and delete operations with a non-administrator account. - Monitor disk capacity and Apache or Nextcloud logs; DAV operations can exhaust storage.
- Back up service-owned files with a process that can read them without weakening their permissions.
Which approach should you use?
Choose standalone Apache DAV when the requirement is a small, controlled repository and you are comfortable maintaining Apache authentication, TLS, and Unix ownership. Choose Nextcloud when users need accounts, sharing, synchronization, and revocable application credentials. In either design, the reliable permission model is layered: secure transport, explicit identity, URL-level authorization, and a server-side account with only the filesystem access it needs.
