On Android with Google Phone, open More options > Settings > Voicemail, enable Visual voicemail, then enable Voicemail transcription if the switch appears. Google limits transcription to supported devices and providers, and documents English and Spanish support on Android 8.0 and newer. Pixel phones also have a separate live feature called Take a Message in selected countries.

Understand the three voicemail features first
“Voicemail transcription” can describe different experiences. Knowing which one you want prevents you from enabling a setting that does something else.

You can have carrier voicemail without live transcription, or visual voicemail without any transcript. The setup below identifies exactly which capability each step enables.

What you need before changing a setting
No special handset accessory or separate transcription product is required for the documented setup. The features are built into the iPhone or supported Phone app and depend on your existing carrier voicemail service. You do need voicemail itself to be provisioned: on iPhone, that normally means creating a greeting and voicemail password in the Phone app’s Voicemail area. On Android, the carrier may require its own activation or voicemail call-in process.
Also identify your phone app. The Android instructions apply to Google Phone. A manufacturer dialer or carrier voicemail app can have different menus, and an operator app may take over visual voicemail so Google Phone no longer displays it.
How to turn on voicemail transcription on an iPhone
Enable Live Voicemail
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps, then Phone.
- Turn on Live Voicemail.
When a caller is sent to voicemail, the iPhone can show a real-time transcript as the person speaks. You can decide whether to answer while reading the message. Apple describes this as “see a real-time transcription as someone is leaving you a message.”
Live Voicemail is a live call-screening experience, not a guarantee that every saved voicemail will later contain text. It requires a supported iPhone environment, country or region and normal carrier calling service. Apple’s availability can change by location, so an enabled switch does not necessarily mean every carrier offers every voicemail function.
Read a transcript after the message is saved
- Open the Phone app.
- Open Voicemails. The tab or its position differs between Apple’s Unified and Classic Phone layouts.
- Tap a saved message.
- Look beneath the playback controls for a transcript.
This stored-message transcript is separate from Live Voicemail. Apple says it is offered only through select carriers and in select countries or regions. If a message plays normally but no text appears, your carrier, region or particular message may not support transcription. Keep the audio available when the wording matters; the presence of a playable recording does not prove that Apple’s transcription service is enabled.
Set up voicemail if it has never been configured
Open the Phone app’s Voicemail area and follow the prompts to create a greeting and voicemail password. Apple documents different on-screen paths for the Unified and Classic layouts, so the labels may not look identical on every iPhone. If those prompts never appear, the carrier may need to activate voicemail or provide a number to call into the service.
What happens when the iPhone is unreachable
If the phone is switched off or outside carrier coverage, Live Voicemail cannot display text. Calls go to the carrier’s voicemail service when that service is available; callers can still leave an audio message for later retrieval. This is why voicemail access through the carrier remains important even when Live Voicemail normally works.

iPhone setup questions to check
- Do you want live text or a later transcript? Turn on Live Voicemail for text during the call, then separately inspect saved messages for a transcript.
- Is the Voicemails list present? If not, complete the carrier’s voicemail setup first; Apple’s layout can also change where the tab appears.
- Is the feature supported where you are? Apple limits stored-message transcription to select carriers and regions, so an iPhone setting alone cannot add support.
How to get voicemail transcripts on Android
The steps below apply to the built-in Google Phone app. A manufacturer’s Phone app or a carrier’s own voicemail app may use different labels and may not expose Google’s transcription control.
Enable Visual voicemail and transcription
- Open the Phone app.
- Tap More options (the three-dot menu), then Settings.
- Tap Voicemail.
- Turn on Visual voicemail.
- Turn on Voicemail transcription if that control is offered.
Visual voicemail creates the in-app message list; it is not itself a transcription engine. Google recommends enabling Visual voicemail when the transcription setting is missing, but the switch will appear only when the device, provider, country and language meet Google’s requirements.
Open a transcript
- Return to the Phone app.
- Open the Voicemail tab.
- Select a message to view its text and play the audio.
If the Phone app has no Voicemail tab, Google’s fallback is to call your voicemail service using the carrier’s instructions. You can still listen to messages even when the app cannot display a transcript. Carrier notifications, greeting setup and password recovery may likewise be handled through that service rather than Google Phone.
Supported languages and providers
Google says voicemail transcription is available in English and Spanish on Android 8.0 and higher, but language support does not override carrier or device restrictions. Google’s documented provider and device examples include:

This is a support list, not a guarantee for every plan, SIM, country or software build. Operators and regional eligibility can change, so check the current Google and carrier support information if your provider is not listed or the switch is absent. A supported language also does not make an unsupported provider eligible.
When a carrier app conflicts with Google Phone
Google says that using the operator’s own voicemail app can turn off visual voicemail in the Phone app to avoid a conflict. If the list disappears after installing or activating a carrier app, use the carrier’s interface or follow its instructions for switching back to Google Phone. Running both interfaces does not create an additional transcription capability.
Pixel’s separate live feature: Take a Message
Google’s Take a Message is not the same as Google Phone’s stored voicemail transcription. It handles calls you miss or decline and can show a live transcription while the caller leaves a message.

Google’s 2026 support information lists live transcription on Pixel 6 and later in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, India, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States. In India, Google specifies Pixel 10 and later, with Hindi for India and English for India. In other markets listed for the feature, Google says audio may be available without transcription. Confirm the current country and model list before relying on it.

Take a Message records and transcribes on the device and does not require Wi-Fi or mobile data. That offline behavior is specific to this Pixel feature; it should not be used to assume that every Google Phone voicemail transcript works without a connection. If the phone is powered off or has no coverage, the carrier’s voicemail system handles the missed call instead.

Neither platform is universally better. The deciding factors are your carrier, country, phone model, operating-system support, language and whether you need live text or a transcript of an already saved recording.
Why voicemail transcription is missing
The setting is not present on Android
- Confirm that you are using the built-in Google Phone app, not only a carrier voicemail app or another dialer.
- Update Google Phone, then return to More options > Settings > Voicemail.
- Enable Visual voicemail first; Google may expose transcription only after visual voicemail is active.
- Check provider, device, country and language eligibility. Android 8.0 or later is required for Google’s documented English and Spanish transcription support.
- If your carrier’s voicemail app is active, Google says Phone app visual voicemail may turn off to avoid a conflict. Use one voicemail interface at a time or follow the carrier’s instructions for switching.
Live Voicemail does not appear on iPhone
- Recheck Settings > Apps > Phone > Live Voicemail.
- Verify that the feature is offered by Apple in your country or region and that your carrier supports the relevant voicemail service.
- Test while the iPhone has cellular coverage. A powered-off phone or one outside coverage sends the call to carrier voicemail instead of showing live text.
A saved message has audio but no transcript
Audio playback proves that voicemail exists; it does not prove that transcription is available. On iPhone, stored transcripts are limited to select carriers and regions. On Android, the provider, device, language and app must all qualify. Listen to the recording or call the carrier voicemail number when text is unavailable.
The Phone app has no voicemail area
Some carriers require you to dial into voicemail rather than use an in-app list. Google specifically advises calling voicemail when the Phone app does not offer the feature. Carrier notifications and password or greeting setup may also need to be completed through the carrier’s service.
Transcription works for some callers but not others
Speech recognition can be affected by background noise, accents, overlapping speech, names and technical audio quality. Treat the transcript as a quick reading aid and play the recording when a detail matters, such as a phone number, address or medication instruction. The official setup guidance does not provide an accuracy percentage, so do not assume that every word is correct.
You changed carriers or moved regions
Carrier and country eligibility is part of both platforms’ support model. A feature that worked on one operator, SIM or trip location may disappear after a carrier change or may not be offered while roaming. Recheck the current provider and regional requirements rather than treating the missing switch as a hardware failure.

Android transcription privacy settings
Google says its Phone app uses computers to transcribe voicemail, does not associate the messages with your Google Account, does not permanently store them, and keeps them on the phone. Turning off transcription deletes the recordings and transcripts from the Phone app according to Google’s help information.
Google also offers an optional way to donate recordings and transcripts to improve transcription. Donated material may be reviewed by people. Review the current wording and opt-in controls on your phone before enabling donation, especially if messages contain confidential information. Donation is optional and is separate from simply viewing a transcript.

The documented setup uses built-in phone settings and the carrier voicemail service; no physical product or third-party accessory is needed. No universal extra fee, free trial or plan entitlement is stated for this setup. Whether visual voicemail, stored transcription or a carrier voicemail app is included is determined by the operator and region. If a feature is absent, ask the carrier whether voicemail is activated on the line and whether the current plan and device qualify.
