The fastest way to reduce hostile communication in a MOBA is to separate exposure control from moderation. Mute or ignore a disruptive player as soon as the behavior starts, use the game’s low-bandwidth coordination tools for useful calls, and submit a report when conduct breaks the rules. Muting changes what you see or hear; reporting asks the publisher to review the incident. Neither guarantees a toxicity-free match.
Controls are not universal. The exact switches depend on the title, platform, account type, region and feature rollout. The clearest current official instructions are for Riot’s games, especially League of Legends. Use the League steps below where they apply, then verify the live client for any other MOBA instead of assuming it has the same menus or commands.

Choose the right control before you enter a match
Start by identifying three things: the game you are playing, the platform and account type, and whether you need a personal setting or a parent-managed restriction. Those choices determine what is available.

A mute is an immediate personal control, not a punishment. A report is a moderation request, not an instant mute for the reporter. Keeping those functions separate prevents a common mistake: assuming that filing a report will stop the same player’s messages before the match ends.

League of Legends: mute or ignore a disruptive player during a match
Riot’s League Instant Feedback guidance explicitly recommends the /mute and /ignore functions when you no longer want to view another player’s negativity. These are the quickest controls when a teammate’s messages are distracting, insulting or trying to provoke an argument.
- Decide whether the problem is exposure or a rule violation. If you simply need silence so you can concentrate, start with mute. If you want to avoid further direct negativity from that player, use ignore when the client offers it. If the conduct is abusive, discriminatory, threatening or otherwise against the rules, plan a report as a separate step.
- Use the in-game chat command. Enter the documented
/muteor/ignorecommand in the League chat interface for the player you want to silence or avoid. Riot’s support guidance names these commands but does not provide a single permanent all-chat menu path; do not assume that a setting seen in another game exists in your client. - Stop engaging. Do not answer an insult with another insult. Riot’s League FAQ warns that retaliation can still lead to penalties, even when another player started the exchange.
- Keep useful information flowing through pings. If you still need to coordinate an objective, movement or danger warning, use Smart Ping rather than reopening the argument.
- Report after you have protected your focus. Use League’s in-game or post-match reporting route when the behavior warrants review. Reporting does not replace the mute or ignore action.
The practical sequence is therefore mute or ignore first, communicate with pings, report when appropriate. You can continue playing without waiting for a moderator to decide what happened.
Use Smart Ping for coordination without reopening chat
Smart Ping is the low-bandwidth alternative Riot points to for team communication. It lets you convey an immediate game-relevant signal—such as attention, danger or an intended movement—without inviting a long text exchange.
- Use a ping for information that changes play right now: an objective, a missing opponent, a retreat or a route.
- Keep the signal tied to the game. A ping is not a substitute for arguing about a teammate’s skill or choices.
- After muting someone, continue watching the map and your team’s pings. Silence should reduce distraction, not remove your awareness of objective timers or rotations.
- Do not assume every MOBA uses the same wheel, labels or key binding. Check that title’s controls page or live client before a ranked match.
There is no evidence of a universal cross-MOBA switch that turns off voice while preserving every form of ping. Some games separate voice, team text, all-chat and quick communication; others combine or rename them. Treat “keep pings but disable voice” as a game-specific question.

Parent-managed chat restrictions for eligible Riot PC accounts in the United States
Riot’s July 15, 2026 announcement describes optional Parent Portal controls for eligible accounts belonging to players under 18. The announced scope is League of Legends, VALORANT and Teamfight Tactics on PC in the United States. Riot said it was working toward availability in more countries, so the same account flow should not be assumed elsewhere.
- Open the child’s account page. Sign in through Riot’s parent-management flow for the child’s account.
- Add the parent’s email address. The account page provides the field for adding a parent email.
- Verify parent status. Complete the verification requested by Riot before attempting to change communication permissions.
- Set the communication level. In the portal, choose whether text and voice chat are off or restricted to friends, using the options available for the supported game and account.
- Recheck in the game. Have the player sign in on the eligible PC account and confirm that the restriction is reflected. If the option is missing, check the account’s age status, country, platform and game eligibility before treating it as a client error.
The Parent Portal is an account-level permission, unlike a player’s temporary in-match mute. Riot says parents can view a child’s friends list and the people with whom the child exchanges messages, but the portal does not provide chat history or gameplay activity. Some data requests require contacting support.
Availability can change as Riot expands the program. If you are outside the United States, using a console or mobile version, or managing an account that does not meet the eligibility rules, use the current official account-support information rather than copying this PC flow.

Report abuse separately from muting it
Riot’s reporting overview says reports can generally be filed in-game or after a match through match history, while noting that the exact steps differ between games. Use the route shown by the title you are playing.

Mute or ignore the player first if you need immediate relief, then submit the report through the in-game or post-match report interface. Riot’s League guidance says reports supported by evidence can lead to penalties and encourages constructive communication, Smart Ping, and mute or ignore tools. Do not wait for a report result before protecting your own attention.
VALORANT as a Riot example
VALORANT is a tactical shooter rather than a MOBA, but its current communication guidance illustrates how a title can expose a specific voice-abuse category. Riot tells players who encounter abusive voice communications to report them in-game and names Voice Comms Abuse as a report category. Use the personal mute controls for immediate silence; the report is for publisher review.
Riot reports that improvements to VALORANT’s Voice Evaluation system helped it detect and penalize twice as many instances of voice-comms abuse over the preceding year, and that Patch 13.06 improved detection for Spanish, Portuguese and Korean. Those are Riot’s reported results, not proof that harassment has been eliminated or that the same detection applies to every game or language.

Riot’s May 29, 2026 League text-evaluation article says the new evaluation system is expected to process “over 20 times more penalties.” That is an expectation about system throughput, not an independently verified outcome showing that player behavior improved by the same amount.

Neither figure establishes that turning chat off reduces toxicity or improves well-being across MOBAs. Personal controls remain useful because they reduce what reaches you immediately, regardless of how quickly a moderation system responds.

In a March 13, 2026 League developer update, Riot said, “We didn’t pursue team voice chat earlier because it couldn’t meet our standards for safety and reliability.” The update described reopening exploration, testing and iteration, including work on eligibility for players in good standing.
Riot also said, “We don’t have exact timelines right now because doing this the right way will take a lot of work and we aren’t yet ready to share concrete details, but you can expect to hear more on Team Voice later this year in a future Dev Update.” That statement did not provide a release date or a public menu path. It is not evidence of the feature’s live status later in 2026.
Before telling readers to enable public League team voice, check a newer official developer update or the current client. If the option is absent, do not create a workaround from another game’s instructions. Continue using text controls, mute or ignore, and Smart Ping.
Adapting the method to another MOBA
The same decision framework works across games, but the button names and scope must be verified title by title.
- Open the game’s communication settings before queueing. Look for separate controls for team text, all-chat, party or friends chat, voice input, voice output and quick-chat or pings. Record which channels are independent; do not infer that they are.
- Test a personal mute in a low-stakes match. Confirm whether muting hides text, suppresses voice, removes pings, or affects only one channel. A game may offer several mute icons with different effects.
- Find the report entry point. Check both the in-match scoreboard and the post-match history screen if the publisher documents both. Note whether the report form has a voice-abuse category or only a general conduct category.
- Check account and regional restrictions. Age gates, parental permissions, platform differences and staged rollouts can change what appears. A PC setting may not exist on console or mobile.
- Keep an offline backup plan for coordination. If you disable all chat, agree with friends to use pings or a permitted party channel so you can still call objectives without exposing yourself to public abuse.
Do not copy exact Dota 2, console or mobile instructions from this guide. The available official evidence does not establish those controls, and presenting unverified steps as universal would risk sending players to menus their version does not have.
Troubleshooting when a control does not appear to work
The player is still visible after you muted them
- Confirm that you used the title’s player mute control rather than muting only your microphone. A microphone mute stops your outgoing audio; it does not necessarily hide another player’s messages.
- Check whether text and voice have separate mute icons. Some clients require both to be silenced.
- Look for a second channel, such as all-chat, party chat or a platform voice overlay, that is outside the game’s player mute.
- Restarting the client may refresh a setting, but do not assume it changes the account’s permanent permissions.
The report option is missing
- Try the post-match history route if the in-game scoreboard does not show a report control.
- Make sure you are signed into the same account and looking at the correct match.
- Read the game’s current support article because Riot says reporting steps differ across games.
- Use mute or ignore immediately; a missing report button should not leave you exposed during the match.
A parent restriction is unavailable
- Verify the account’s country, PC platform, age status and supported game.
- Confirm that the parent email was added and verification completed.
- Check whether the feature has rolled out to your region. Riot’s announcement covers eligible U.S. accounts and says expansion to more countries was planned, not complete.
- Contact official support for an account-specific data or permission issue instead of changing the child’s account details informally.
Understand communication penalties and privacy limits
Riot lists VALORANT communication-restriction durations of 1, 3, 7, 14 or 365 days, with possible regional differences. Those durations describe publisher penalties, not a timer you can set for another player and not a guarantee that every game uses the same schedule.
Voice processing and transcript retention can also follow region-specific rules. You do not need to understand those retention policies to mute someone, but read the current game notice if privacy or recording is a concern.
For family accounts, the Parent Portal’s visibility is limited. Riot says parents may see a child’s friends list and whom the child exchanges messages with, but not chat history or gameplay activity through the portal. Some information requires a support request. This is different from giving a parent a replay of every conversation.
A practical pre-match and in-match checklist
Before queueing
- Identify whether you need a personal mute, an account-level restriction or a report.
- Check the current game and platform’s communication settings.
- Confirm how to open the player list, mute controls, report form and ping wheel.
- If you are managing a child’s eligible U.S. Riot PC account, complete Parent Portal verification before the match rather than during it.
When hostility starts
- Mute or ignore the disruptive player immediately.
- Use Smart Ping or the game’s equivalent for objective-focused coordination.
- Do not retaliate with insults, threats or spam; your response can still be penalized.
- Report through the supported in-game or post-match route when the conduct warrants review.
After the match
- Confirm the report was submitted if you chose to file one.
- Review whether the mute solved the exposure problem or whether an account-level setting is more appropriate.
- For a recurring issue, update the game’s current communication permissions rather than relying on memory from a different title or platform.
What these controls cannot guarantee
Muting and ignoring reduce the messages or audio you personally receive; they do not remove a disruptive player from the match, prevent teammates from seeing the content, or guarantee that the next game will be calm. Reports give the publisher evidence to evaluate, but action and timing depend on the game’s moderation system, region and available evidence. Parent controls restrict eligible accounts, but they do not replace supervision or explain every platform-level communication channel.
The most reliable low-toxicity setup is therefore layered: use the narrowest personal mute that restores concentration, keep essential calls in Smart Ping or another non-conversational channel, report serious conduct, and verify any permanent or family setting in the current game and region. That approach preserves useful coordination without treating an unverified, universal “turn off toxicity” switch as if one existed.
