In the YouTube mobile app, open the chat controls, tap Add, then Create a poll. Enter two to four answer choices, publish the poll, and select End poll in the chat banner when you want to close it.
The mobile app also has a separate on-screen Poll sticker. Use that workflow when you want the question displayed over the video rather than only inside chat; desktop Studio and encoder polls do not turn into stickers.
What a YouTube live poll can and cannot do
YouTube’s poll feature is built into Live Chat. It works while a live broadcast or Premiere is running, so there is no separate polling service to configure. The computer workflow is documented in YouTube’s Live Chat help; mobile chat controls are covered in the iPhone and iPad instructions.

These limits are listed in YouTube’s Live Chat overview. They affect how you brief viewers: explain the question aloud or on screen if the result needs to make sense to people watching the recording later.
Check prerequisites before you start
Confirm that Live Chat is available
Live Chat is on by default for a live broadcast unless the stream’s audience is set as made for kids, according to YouTube’s help guidance. If the chat panel is unavailable, inspect the stream’s audience and chat settings before looking for the poll control. A chat poll cannot be created without an active chat window.

Know the mobile-live requirements
If you intend to start the event from a phone, YouTube lists several requirements in its mobile live-streaming guide:
- The channel must have at least 50 subscribers.
- There must have been no live-streaming restrictions on the channel during the previous 90 days.
- The channel must be verified.
- Live streaming must be turned on for the channel.
- The phone or tablet must be a supported mobile device.
YouTube says the first mobile live stream may take up to 24 hours to become available after you enable the feature. Complete that activation well before an event if your poll depends on a phone-based broadcast.

Choose the presentation you actually need
There are two different mobile choices:
- Chat poll: a poll card inside Live Chat. It is the mobile equivalent of the desktop chat poll.
- Poll sticker: an overlay placed on the live video. It has its own text, color, size, and position controls and is available through the mobile app.
Decide between these before you go live. A chat poll is best when viewers are already following the conversation; a sticker is the documented option when you need the question visibly over the picture.
Create a poll on a computer
The desktop method works for a scheduled stream, a stream that is already live, or a Premiere, provided its Live Chat is available.

- Open YouTube Studio or the YouTube page for the scheduled broadcast and go to the event’s Live Chat window.
- Wait for the chat panel to load. The poll control is at the bottom of that chat window, not in the video player’s general settings.
- Click Create a poll.
- Type the question viewers should answer.
- Enter two to four answer options. Remove unused fields if the interface presents more lines than you need; the finished poll must stay within YouTube’s two-to-four-option rule.
- Read the question and every option as they will appear to viewers. Correct ambiguity, spelling, and ordering before publishing because a submitted vote cannot be changed by the viewer.
- Click the control to publish the poll. It appears as a poll card in the live chat.
- Tell viewers how long you plan to leave it open and what the result will be used for. This prevents people from mistaking a poll for a normal chat message.
The location of the control—at the bottom of the event’s chat window—is the key desktop detail documented by YouTube. If you are managing several browser tabs, check that you opened the chat for the correct scheduled event or Premiere rather than another live conversation.
End the desktop poll and reveal its result
- When you have collected enough responses, look at the banner at the top of the chat panel.
- Click End poll.
- Leave the ended poll visible while you discuss the result, or continue with the next segment of the broadcast.
Ending the poll closes voting and shows the result in chat. It does not create a replay segment: the poll itself will not be inserted into the later Live Chat replay.

Use this route when you want the poll card inside chat and you are operating the broadcast from a phone or tablet.
- Open the YouTube mobile app and start or join the live stream you are managing.
- Open the stream’s chat window and move to the controls at the bottom of the chat.
- Tap Add.
- Tap Create a poll.
- Enter the question and two to four answer choices.
- Review the wording, then publish the poll.
- To close it, use End poll in the banner at the top of the chat, just as you would on a computer.
YouTube documents the Add > Create a poll path for its iPhone and iPad app at this help page. The Android and iOS interfaces can change slightly by version, but the important distinction is that the poll command is inside the live chat’s Add menu, not in the ordinary upload or video-editing controls.

Put a poll on the video with the mobile Poll sticker
The Poll sticker is a separate mobile presentation. It is not the same object as a chat poll, and it should be chosen when viewers need to see the question over the live picture.
- Open the live stream in the YouTube mobile app and open the live interaction tools.
- Choose the option for a Poll sticker.
- Enter the sticker’s question and its answer choices.
- Customize the sticker’s text, color, and size.
- Drag it to the position where it will not cover the important part of the video.
- Publish or place the sticker on the live screen.
- When the response period is over, drag the sticker to the trash to end that poll.
The sticker can be repositioned and resized while you are arranging the presentation. YouTube’s documentation distinguishes this mobile sticker from polls created in desktop Studio or through an encoder: those desktop and encoder polls do not appear as stickers. If a sticker is required, start it through the documented mobile flow instead of trying to convert an existing desktop chat poll. All three working routes still follow YouTube’s poll rules: two to four choices, a maximum open period of 24 hours, and no inclusion in chat replay.
Write a poll that viewers can answer quickly
The tool only supplies the controls; the question determines whether the result is useful. Keep the wording specific enough that viewers do not need a second explanation while the stream is moving.

Make the question answerable in one pass
- Ask for one decision, preference, or prediction rather than combining several questions.
- Use answer choices that do not overlap. If two choices could both be true, viewers will interpret them differently.
- Include every realistic answer within the two-to-four-option limit. If you need an “other” response, decide whether a chat message is a better companion than forcing an incomplete choice.
- Put choices in a deliberate order, such as a chronological sequence or a scale from least to most, so the result is easy to read aloud.
Tell viewers what the poll is for
Before publishing, say the question aloud and explain whether the result will choose the next topic, settle a preference, or simply measure sentiment. State when you expect to close it. A clear purpose makes a short poll feel like part of the program instead of an unrelated interruption.
Plan for viewers who watch later
Because the poll card does not carry into Live Chat replay, record the question and final result in your spoken commentary if the decision matters after the broadcast. You can also summarize the outcome in a normal chat message or in the video description, but that is separate from the poll object itself.
Use the presentation deliberately
A chat poll keeps the interaction in the same column as messages and questions. A sticker consumes screen space but makes the prompt visible even when a viewer is not watching the chat panel. Check the camera framing and any lower-third graphics before placing a sticker so the overlay does not obscure the subject of the stream.

“Create a poll” is not visible on desktop
- Confirm that you opened the Live Chat for the correct scheduled stream, active stream, or Premiere.
- Look at the bottom edge of the chat window; the command is not located in the general video-player menu.
- Check whether Live Chat is available for the event. A made-for-kids audience setting is an important exception to YouTube’s default chat behavior.
- If the event is not currently an eligible live or Premiere experience, a poll control will not be available in an ordinary video comment area.
The mobile Add menu does not contain a poll
Make sure you are inside the live stream’s chat rather than the app’s general posting interface. If you are also trying to start the stream from the phone, verify the channel, device, verification, subscriber, restriction, and live-streaming requirements listed by YouTube. A newly enabled first mobile live stream can take up to 24 hours before YouTube makes it available.
I need an on-screen sticker, but I created a desktop poll
Desktop Studio and encoder polls do not become stickers. Create the sticker through the mobile app’s sticker controls instead. Treat the two polls as different presentations rather than expecting a conversion button.
A viewer wants to change a submitted vote
YouTube does not provide a vote-edit action after submission. If the question was flawed or the choices were wrong, explain the mistake and publish a corrected poll as a new interaction; do not promise that existing votes can be transferred.
The poll is missing from the replay
This is expected behavior. Live polls are available during the event but are not included in Live Chat replay. Preserve the question and result in your narration or another post-event note if later viewers need that context.

Check whether someone selected End poll in the chat banner or dragged a sticker to the trash. A poll can be ended before its 24-hour maximum, so coordinate access to the stream controls among co-hosts and moderators.
A practical run-of-show checklist
Before the broadcast
- Choose chat poll or mobile sticker based on where you want viewers to see the prompt.
- Draft the final question and two to four non-overlapping choices.
- For a phone-based broadcast, complete channel verification and live-stream activation early enough to allow YouTube’s possible 24-hour first-stream delay.
- Confirm that the intended event has Live Chat and that its audience setting does not disable that chat.
- Decide who will publish the poll and who will end it so two people do not act on conflicting timing.
While live
- Introduce the question verbally before opening the poll.
- Publish it using the desktop chat control, mobile Add > Create a poll control, or mobile sticker flow.
- Give viewers enough time to notice the prompt, then watch the response count or chat reaction without changing the published choices.
- Close the poll with End poll for a chat poll or by dragging the sticker to the trash for a sticker.
- Read or discuss the result while it is visible to the live audience.
After the broadcast
- Do not look for the poll card in Chat replay; it is not carried over.
- If the result affected your content, add a clear spoken or written summary for people who watch the recording.
- Keep notes on which question and option order you used so a later poll does not accidentally ask the same audience to make an inconsistent choice.
