OBS can display the pointer through a browser overlay, but the reviewed official documentation does not establish a ready-to-install service that lets chat move a shared cursor. You must either build the input layer or adapt an interaction service without granting viewers access to your computer or OBS.
What a viewer-controlled cursor actually requires
“Let chat move the cursor” sounds like one feature, but it is a small distributed system. The stream must show a pointer in a predictable location, viewers need a page or control surface that sends input, and a trusted process must decide which input is accepted and where the pointer may move.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
These responsibilities should remain separate:
- Display: a browser overlay draws the cursor over the game, desktop region, or other scene content.
- Input: a viewer-facing page, extension, or control panel sends a position, command, vote, or turn request.
- Policy: a server or local bridge identifies the active participant, rate-limits messages, enforces boundaries, and lets a moderator pause or reset control.
- Broadcast: OBS captures the resulting overlay in the outgoing stream.
An overlay alone is only a picture. It cannot give viewers control unless a separate application receives their input and changes the pointer state.

Start with the narrowest useful target: a visible pointer over the stream or a bounded region of a game or desktop. Do not expose the streamer’s unrestricted mouse, keyboard, OBS interface, file system, or operating system.

Safer control targets
- A cursor that moves inside a fixed rectangle over gameplay.
- A pointer that highlights items in a puzzle, map, presentation, or demonstration.
- A turn-based pointing session in which one approved viewer controls the cursor for a short period.
- A crowd cursor whose position is calculated from votes or queued requests rather than direct continuous control.
Targets to avoid
- The host computer’s unrestricted pointer.
- Keyboard or mouse events sent directly to the operating system.
- OBS WebSocket endpoints exposed to viewers.
- Any design in which a viewer can launch programs, change scenes freely, reveal credentials, or interrupt the stream.
Keeping the pointer inside a defined rectangle is both a usability feature and a security boundary. The input service should reject coordinates outside that rectangle instead of merely hiding them after they arrive.
Choose an interaction model before choosing software
Continuous control is the hardest model because it generates frequent messages, amplifies latency, and creates conflicts when many people move at once. Decide whether the audience really needs a live mouse-like experience.
| Model | How it works | Best use | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|---|
| One active controller | One authenticated or moderator-selected viewer sends positions; others wait in a queue. | Precise pointing, demonstrations, and games that need deliberate control. | Requires turn management and an obvious handoff state. |
| Vote-to-move | Viewers vote on a direction or target; the server applies the winning result at intervals. | Large audiences and streams with noticeable latency. | Less precise than direct control. |
| Queued targets | Viewers submit points or labels, and the system visits them in order or after moderation. | Puzzles, maps, and collaborative exploration. | Input can become stale while the queue is processed. |
| Continuous crowd cursor | Many position updates are merged into one pointer state. | Experimental visual effects where precision is unimportant. | Spam, jitter, and conflicting movements can make it unusable. |
Use turn-taking, deliberate pointing, or short commands when the platform’s latency makes continuous steering frustrating. A design that tolerates delay is usually more reliable than trying to make a remote mouse feel local.

Build or select the input surface
The reviewed official sources do not provide a shared-cursor web application or a complete implementation. If you build one, treat the viewer-facing page as an untrusted client. It should submit an intended pointer position or command; it should never receive credentials or direct access to the host.
Minimum input-service responsibilities
- Identify the participant: associate each message with a session, account, or moderator-approved token.
- Select the active controller: support a queue, a moderator lock, or a timed lease so that only the intended participant can move the pointer.
- Enforce a movement region: clamp or reject coordinates outside the overlay rectangle.
- Rate-limit updates: discard excessive messages and smooth movement rather than forwarding every mouse event.
- Expire control: end a session after inactivity or a fixed time and return control to the moderator.
- Provide pause and reset: the streamer must be able to freeze the pointer and restore a known position immediately.
- Log moderation actions: record who received control, when it started, and when input was blocked or reset.
These are implementation recommendations, not features verified in the adjacent services discussed below. A practical message might contain a session identifier, normalized horizontal and vertical coordinates, a sequence number, and a timestamp. The server should validate every field, discard old sequence numbers, and broadcast only the resulting approved state.
Normalize coordinates instead of hard-coding pixels
Represent the pointer as a fraction of the permitted region, such as a horizontal and vertical value between zero and one. The overlay converts those values into pixels at its current size. This keeps the cursor aligned when the browser source is resized, while the server still enforces the same logical boundaries.

Separate viewer permissions from operator permissions
The viewer endpoint should accept only pointer-related input. Actions such as changing scenes, editing sources, restarting the overlay, or stopping the stream belong on a separate authenticated operator channel. Do not reuse an administrative token in browser JavaScript or a public extension.

Render the cursor in OBS
OBS can display a web page as a Browser Source. The general overlay workflow documented in the Crowd Control setup guide is useful here: copy an overlay URL into a Browser Source and match the overlay’s resolution and size to the gameplay area. That documentation describes Crowd Control’s overlays, not a shared cursor, so use it only as a display-workflow analogy.
- Open the scene that contains the game or desktop region viewers will control.
- Add a Browser source and place it above the content source in the scene’s source list.
- Enter the URL of your cursor-rendering page. The page should contain only the overlay UI needed for the broadcast, not moderator controls or secrets.
- Set the Browser Source width and height to the same logical dimensions as the controlled region. If the cursor belongs over only part of the game capture, position and crop the source to that part.
- Make the overlay background transparent and verify that the pointer remains visible against light and dark scenes.
- Lock the source position after alignment so an accidental scene edit cannot shift the pointer relative to the game.
- Switch scenes and return to the original scene to confirm that the browser source reconnects and retains the correct coordinate system.
The overlay should show a clear state when control is paused, queued, or unavailable. A small label such as “waiting for turn” is more useful than a pointer that appears frozen without explanation.
If you use a Twitch extension
A Twitch video-overlay extension runs in the viewer’s player space. It can provide buttons, a queue, or a pointer indicator, but the platform documentation does not specify cursor synchronization or supply the application backend needed to process movement.
Overlay elements consume video space and can interfere with player controls. Keep interaction controls and cursor indicators away from the player’s own chrome, then test the extension in normal, theater, and full-screen layouts. A control panel that works in the default player may cover the video or become unreachable in another layout.
For a pointer that must appear in the actual broadcast recording, an OBS Browser Source is usually the clearer display path. A Twitch extension can remain the input surface while the server sends the approved position to the OBS overlay.

Keep OBS and the host computer private
OBS WebSocket can automate scenes and sources, but it is an administrative control interface, not a safe public input endpoint. OBS’s Remote Control Guide states: “It is highly recommended to keep the WebSocket protected with a password against unauthorized control.”
Do not publish the WebSocket port, password, or an unrestricted endpoint in a viewer page. If the cursor system must affect OBS, place a trusted local bridge between the input service and OBS. Give that bridge only the narrow actions it needs, such as updating a dedicated browser source or toggling a pause state. The public service should never be able to invoke arbitrary scene, source, or host operations.
A safe connection pattern
- Viewers send validated pointer input to the public service.
- The service applies identity, queue, rate, timeout, and boundary rules.
- The approved cursor state is published to the overlay page.
- A local, authenticated bridge connects to OBS only if an OBS-side action is genuinely required.
- The bridge exposes no inbound administrative port to viewers.
What adjacent tools establish—and what they do not
| Tool or platform | Documented capability | What is not established | How to treat it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crowd Control | Viewer-triggered game effects, “Disrupts” such as interactive puzzles, and monitor or effect overlays. Its current setup guide reports over 250+ game integrations. | A shared cursor that accepts continuous viewer movement. | Use its overlay instructions as a display analogy only; do not assume cursor support. Its Windows desktop app requirement is also relevant to creator compatibility. |
| CastMate | An OBS forum listing describes viewer-triggered automations, scene changes, overlay influence, and simulated input. | Continuous shared cursor movement and a complete moderation model. | Consider it an automation component only after checking current documentation and tightly constraining every action. |
| Twitch extensions | Video-overlay user interfaces inside the viewer’s player. | Cursor synchronization or the backend that applies pointer movement. | Use as an optional input surface, while handling player-space and control-layer conflicts. |
| Sony patent US 12,752,199 | A 2026 secondary report describes adaptive pointers and reactions during gameplay. | A released consumer feature or an available setup. | Treat the patent as a description of claimed technology, not as a product you can install. |
The fact that a tool can trigger an event or simulate an input does not make it a shared cursor. Continuous movement requires state synchronization, arbitration, and a safe boundary around the controlled region.

YouTube characterizes low latency as suitable for limited interaction and says most viewers of a low-latency stream will experience latency of less than 10 seconds. That is useful for voting or deliberate pointing, but it can feel extremely slow for mouse-like steering. The stream, chat, input service, and overlay may each add delay.
Interaction choices that tolerate delay
- Give one viewer a timed turn rather than allowing everyone to fight over the pointer.
- Use target selection or directional commands instead of raw pointer events.
- Show the active controller and the last accepted command so viewers understand why the pointer has not moved yet.
- Apply movement in short, visible steps rather than attempting to mirror every local mouse event.
- Let the moderator pause input during scene changes, loading screens, or sensitive operations.
Do not advertise a real-time experience unless you have measured it on the actual platform, stream settings, and audience conditions you will use. The documented latency figure is a platform characterization, not a guarantee for your particular stream.
Test privately before going live
Use a private or unlisted stream and at least two viewer sessions. Test the complete path from viewer input to the rendered cursor, not just the overlay page in a browser.

- Queue test: join, leave, and reconnect participants while a turn is active.
- Reset test: pause the system and restore a known location without restarting OBS.
- Scene test: switch scenes, resize the Browser Source, and verify alignment after returning.
- Layout test: if using Twitch overlay UI, check normal, theater, and full-screen player layouts.
- Failure test: disconnect the input service, overlay page, and local bridge separately. The stream should show a safe paused state rather than stale or unrestricted control.
These are prudent implementation checks, not results of an independent product test. Record the behavior you observe in your own environment before enabling audience control.
Troubleshoot common failures
The cursor is visible but never moves
Check the input page’s connection to the service, then inspect whether the viewer has an active turn. Confirm that the overlay is subscribed to the same channel or session identifier that receives approved updates. A functioning Browser Source proves only that rendering works.
The cursor moves outside the game area
Compare the Browser Source dimensions and position with the controlled rectangle. Verify that the server uses normalized coordinates or applies the same pixel scale as the overlay. Enforce the boundary on the server as well as in the browser.
The cursor is offset after resizing
Do not store permanent screen pixels as the viewer’s coordinate. Convert normalized values to the overlay’s current width and height, then check for transparent margins, cropping, and browser-source scaling.
The pointer jitters or jumps
Reduce the accepted update rate, discard stale sequence numbers, and interpolate between approved positions in the overlay. If several viewers are sending input, switch to a queue or vote model instead of merging every event.
Viewers can affect OBS
Immediately pause the public input service, rotate exposed credentials, and remove any viewer-facing OBS endpoint. Reconnect OBS through a private, password-protected local bridge with only the required action permitted.
Best Value
Twitch controls cover the video
Move controls away from player chrome and retest every supported layout. If the extension remains intrusive, keep Twitch as a small input panel and render the pointer exclusively through the OBS Browser Source.
When an adjacent automation tool is a reasonable fit
An event-driven tool can be useful when the audience does not need continuous movement. For example, a viewer command might request “move left,” vote for one of several targets, or trigger a moderator-approved scene state. That is materially different from allowing chat to steer a pointer frame by frame.
Before adopting any automation component, verify its current documentation, supported operating system, authentication model, and ability to restrict actions. Crowd Control’s documented Windows desktop app requirement matters if the creator uses another operating system. CastMate’s forum description of simulated input is not proof that it offers safe, continuous cursor control.
Recommended architecture for a first implementation
For most creators, the least risky design is a bounded cursor overlay with one active viewer and a moderator override:
- Create a viewer page with a pointer pad or target-selection interface.
- Authenticate or identify viewers sufficiently to assign a single active turn.
- Send normalized coordinates or discrete targets to a server.
- Validate boundaries, rate, sequence, timeout, and active-controller status on that server.
- Publish only the approved cursor state to a transparent overlay page.
- Add that page as an OBS Browser Source aligned to the gameplay region.
- Keep OBS WebSocket and all host controls on a private, password-protected local path.
- Expose pause, reset, handoff, and emergency-disable controls to the streamer.
- Test privately with realistic latency and multiple viewer sessions.
This architecture gives viewers a visible shared pointer without confusing display with control or turning the stream computer into a public remote desktop.
Bottom line for creators
A viewer-controlled cursor is currently a custom integration problem, not a documented turnkey feature. Build the input and moderation layer separately, render the approved state in an OBS Browser Source, and keep all privileged OBS and computer controls private. If your audience and platform cannot tolerate pointer latency, use turns, votes, or queued targets instead of continuous steering. Adjacent tools and patent reports may inform the design, but none of the reviewed material establishes a ready-to-install shared-cursor product.
