To set up Verizon parental controls, install Verizon Family on the parent’s phone, sign in with a My Verizon Account Owner or Manager profile, create your family, and pair the child’s phone with Verizon Family Companion. Pairing is essential: content filters, app and website activity, and many time controls depend on the Companion app and its permissions. Verizon supports child phones running Android 6.0 or later or iOS 15 or later.
What Verizon Family controls
Verizon Family is a carrier-linked safety service for managing participating family members’ phones and, where supported, connected watches. The standard service is included with a Verizon monthly mobile account or Gizmo Watch service. Controls are applied to the child profile you create in the Family app rather than directly from the phone’s ordinary settings.

Depending on your plan and devices, you can filter content, restrict apps and categories, schedule cellular downtime, pause internet access, review web and app activity, share locations, save places, receive arrival or departure alerts, and use additional safety tools. Verizon Family mobile controls are separate from parental-control rules configured on a Verizon home router; changing one does not automatically change the other.

What you need before starting
- A parent phone with the Verizon Family app installed.
- A My Verizon user ID or mobile number with Account Owner or Manager access.
- The child’s phone available during setup so you can install and pair Verizon Family Companion.
- An Android child phone on version 6.0 or later, or an iPhone on iOS 15 or later.
- Permission to install the Companion app and approve its requested permissions, including its VPN profile where prompted.
- For location boundary alerts: a Plus subscription, paired devices, location sharing enabled, and working GPS on the relevant phones.
Set up the family and parent account
- Install Verizon Family on the parent phone. Open the app and sign in with a My Verizon credential that has Account Owner or Manager access. A standard member login cannot complete the account-level setup.
- Create your family. Follow the prompts to create the family group, then invite household members. Assign each person the role that fits: Guardian for another supervising adult, Member for an ordinary family participant, or Child/Dependent for a child profile.
- Check the profile assignment. Open the family member list and confirm that the child’s name and phone number are attached to the Child/Dependent profile. Filtering and activity reports can fail when the phone is attached to the wrong profile.
- Keep both phones nearby. The pairing process uses instructions sent by text or displayed in the app. Completing only the parent-side setup does not activate monitoring on the child’s phone.
Pair the child’s phone with Verizon Family Companion
On the child’s device, install Verizon Family Companion and begin the pairing flow from the text message or in-app instructions generated during family setup. Follow the prompts until the child phone appears as paired under the correct child profile in the parent app.

- Send or display the setup instructions for the child phone.
- Install Verizon Family Companion on the child phone.
- Open Companion and complete the pairing code or confirmation steps shown on both phones.
- Allow the permissions the app requests. Content filtering, web and app activity, and some time restrictions rely on the Companion app and its VPN profile.
- Return to the parent phone and verify that the device status is paired, online, and assigned to the intended child.
Pairing is the dividing line between a family roster and working controls. Without it, the parent app may show a child profile but cannot reliably enforce filters or report activity from that phone.
iPhone and Android compatibility
Verizon’s current Companion guidance lists Android 6.0 or newer and iOS 15 or newer for supported child phones. A phone that is too old to meet those versions may not install Companion or may not support all controls. The exact permissions and operating-system screens differ between Android and iOS, so use the prompts shown on the child device rather than assuming the same menu names on both platforms.
Filter websites, apps, and content categories
After pairing, open the child profile in Verizon Family and select Parental Controls, then Filter content. Verizon presents categories such as messaging, games, and email, along with individual apps or app groups that can be toggled. Select the categories and apps you want restricted, then save the changes.

- Open Verizon Family on the parent phone.
- Select the child profile and choose Parental Controls.
- Tap Filter content.
- Choose a category, such as games, messaging, or email, or select an individual supported app.
- Turn the filter on or off for the selected item.
- Save, then allow time for the paired child phone to receive the policy.
Filtering is not a universal replacement for every operating-system restriction. Some Apple system apps cannot be filtered, and certain guest or multi-profile configurations are outside Verizon’s supported coverage. Apps or services that do not fit Verizon’s supported categories may continue to work even when a broad category appears restricted.
If a filter appears not to work
- Confirm the phone is paired and assigned to the correct Child/Dependent profile.
- Check that Verizon Family Companion is installed and running.
- Review the Companion permissions, including the VPN profile permission if requested.
- Make sure the filter was saved after selecting the category or app.
- Test with the child phone connected and online; an offline device cannot receive a new policy immediately.
- Check whether the app is an Apple system app, a guest profile app, or an unsupported service.
- Look for another parental-control or security app that prevents Companion from installing or changing permissions.
Create school, bedtime, and other time restrictions
Use the child profile’s scheduling and time-control tools to define periods such as school hours, bedtime, or a recurring family rule. A scheduled restriction pauses cellular calls, texts, and mobile data on the child phone. Emergency calls to 911 and contacts you designate as trusted remain available.
- Open the child profile in Verizon Family.
- Go to the time-management or schedule controls.
- Create a schedule for the needed days and time range, such as a weekday school block or nightly bedtime.
- Choose the restriction to apply and save it.
- Check the child phone during an active period to confirm the expected behavior.
These restrictions govern cellular service. Verizon states that Wi-Fi may still work during a scheduled cellular restriction, so a child connected to a home, school, or public wireless network may retain internet access. If your goal is to stop all internet use, test the specific connection and consider the separate controls available on your router or the child device itself.

Location features require more than installing the app. Verizon requires a Plus subscription, paired devices, location sharing, and GPS for arrival and departure alerts. If any one of those prerequisites is missing, the alert option may not appear or may not trigger.
- Confirm that Verizon Family Plus is active for the family and that the child phone is paired.
- Enable location sharing for the relevant family member.
- Open the location section and choose to add a saved place.
- Enter the place, set its radius, select the family member, and choose whether you want an arrival alert, a departure alert, or both.
- Verify that location permission and GPS are enabled on the child phone.
- Save the place and test the alert expectations with the family member before treating it as a safety-critical notification.
Location alerts depend on the phone reporting a usable position. An indoor, low-signal, powered-off, or permission-blocked phone may delay or prevent an alert. Treat the feature as an aid to communication, not as a guaranteed real-time boundary.

Safe Walk
Verizon has described Safe Walk as a feature that lets a child ask a parent to start watching their movement on a map while they are traveling and feel concerned. Availability depends on the Family service, plan, device, and current app support.
Review web and app activity
Open the child profile and review the activity area for web and app usage and noteworthy-event alerts. Verizon says activity reporting can include Wi-Fi use, but offline apps may not appear. The Companion app and its permissions are required for the activity data that Verizon supports.
Recommended Free Tools
- Use activity reports to identify patterns, not as a complete record of everything done on the phone.
- Expect gaps when the phone is offline, the Companion app is stopped, permissions are removed, or an app is outside Verizon’s supported reporting categories.
- Explain to the child what is being monitored and why, particularly for older children and teenagers.
What Verizon Family and Family Plus include
The standard Verizon Family service is included with a Verizon monthly mobile account or Gizmo Watch service. Verizon’s current FAQ lists several Plus prices and eligibility paths; the applicable charge depends on the plan you have.
Best Value
| Service or eligibility | What it means | Price stated by Verizon |
|---|---|---|
| Standard Verizon Family | Core family-management service included with a Verizon monthly mobile account or Gizmo Watch service. | Included with the qualifying service |
| Family Plus on legacy mobile plans | Upgrade adding advanced controls and safety features, subject to device and plan requirements. | $14.99 per month |
| Family Plus as a myPlan perk | Plus access provided through an eligible myPlan perk. | $10 per month |
| Unlimited Ultimate | Family Plus included with the new Unlimited Ultimate plan, subject to the plan’s current terms. | Included |
Verizon’s Plus feature set includes content blocking, app and web activity, screen-time management, internet pausing, expanded location alerts, driving insights, roadside assistance, and Family Line. Feature availability can vary by plan, device, and account configuration, and Verizon can change eligibility or pricing.
When Plus is worth considering
Plus is the relevant upgrade when you specifically need content blocking, detailed app or web activity, internet pausing, expanded location alerts, or the additional safety services. If you only need a family roster and basic account-level management, the included service may be sufficient. Check the feature list shown for your exact Verizon plan before subscribing; a feature that requires a paired phone, GPS, or a particular operating-system permission will not become available merely because the subscription is active.
Privacy, consent, and practical limits
Parental monitoring can expose a child’s location, app use, and browsing-related activity. Tell family members what the service collects, which alerts are active, and who can see the information. Use the least intrusive settings that meet your safety goal, and review trusted-contact access whenever the family’s circumstances change.
Verizon Family is tied to the Verizon account and the participating devices. It is not a universal control layer for every device a child might use. A tablet, game console, second phone, guest profile, or a device on a different carrier may require its own controls. Likewise, Verizon Family mobile settings do not configure the parental-control features on a Verizon home router.
Troubleshoot a setup that is not working
The child phone does not appear
- Verify that you signed in as the Verizon account Owner or a Manager.
- Confirm the child was invited and assigned as Child/Dependent.
- Install Verizon Family Companion on the child phone.
- Complete the pairing flow from the text or in-app instructions rather than stopping after installation.
- Check that the phone meets Android 6.0 or iOS 15 minimum support.
Controls are visible but have no effect
- Confirm the device status is paired and the child profile is correct.
- Recheck Companion permissions and VPN-profile approval.
- Save the filter or schedule again and allow the phone to reconnect.
- Test whether the child is using Wi-Fi; cellular restrictions do not necessarily stop Wi-Fi access.
- Remove or temporarily review another parental-control app that may block Companion.
Activity reports are incomplete
Incomplete reports can be expected when the phone is offline, an app works offline, permissions have been revoked, or the service does not support that app or profile type. Restore the Companion permissions, reconnect the phone, and check again. Do not interpret a blank report as proof that no activity occurred.
Location alerts do not arrive
Check all four prerequisites: Plus, paired devices, location sharing, and GPS. Confirm the saved place, radius, family member, and arrival/departure direction. A phone with weak positioning, disabled location access, or no connection may report late.
Quick Recap
Final setup checklist
- Parent is signed in with Account Owner or Manager access.
- Family roles are correct, especially the Child/Dependent assignment.
- Companion is installed on the child phone and pairing is complete.
- Child phone meets Android 6.0+ or iOS 15+ support requirements.
- Content filters are selected, saved, and tested.
- Schedules account for the fact that Wi-Fi may continue during cellular restrictions.
- 911 and trusted contacts are configured before using downtime rules.
- Plus, location sharing, and GPS are active before relying on boundary alerts.
- Activity-report gaps are understood and permissions remain enabled.
- Router controls are configured separately if you also need to manage home Wi-Fi.
