To set up UPI, install an official UPI-enabled app, verify the SIM containing your bank-registered mobile number, create an app passcode, link your bank account and set a 4–6 digit UPI PIN. For your first payment, use the recipient’s UPI ID or official QR code, confirm the payee name and amount shown by the app, and enter your PIN only to authorize the outgoing payment.
Never share your UPI PIN, app passcode or OTP, and never enter a PIN to receive money. If a payment is debited but fails, check its status and contact your bank through its official support channel if the money is not returned within the applicable resolution period.

What UPI is and what you need before registering
Unified Payments Interface (UPI) connects a bank account to a mobile app so you can send or receive money using a virtual payment address, a phone contact, or a QR code. The mobile number registered with your bank is central to setup: the app uses mobile verification to find accounts you are eligible to link.

UPI is now a mainstream payment rail in India. A 2026 Press Information Bureau release says UPI represented 81% of India’s retail digital payments in financial year 2024–25. The same release identifies device binding, PIN-based two-factor authentication and transaction limits as safeguards.

Checklist before you start
- An Android or iOS smartphone that can install the official app-store version of your bank’s app or another reputable UPI-enabled app. NPCI’s BHIM service is available on both Android and iOS.
- The SIM containing the mobile number registered with your bank, inserted and active in the phone.
- An eligible bank account and the debit-card information required by your bank’s PIN setup flow. BHIM’s documented flow uses the last six digits and expiry date of the debit card.
- A screen lock on the phone. Keep the operating system and payment app updated.
- A way to contact your bank through its official website, app, branch or phone number if registration or a payment fails.
Choose an official UPI app
You can use your bank’s own app or another reputable UPI-enabled app obtained from the official Android or iOS store. Avoid installation files shared through messages, unknown websites or remote-access instructions. An app’s features and transaction limits depend on the bank, app, account type and device, so the first app you try may not expose every available option.
How to judge an app without assuming one is universally safest
| Criterion | What to check |
|---|---|
| Bank compatibility and onboarding | Whether your bank and account appear during registration, and whether mobile verification completes reliably. |
| Payee verification | Whether the payment screen clearly displays the recipient name and amount before PIN entry. |
| Complaint and refund workflow | Whether transaction status, reference numbers and dispute options are easy to find. |
| Security controls | App passcode, device binding, optional biometric support and clear warnings about PIN and OTP sharing. |
| Language and accessibility | Readable labels, supported languages and controls that work for your vision, hearing or motor needs. |
| Support quality | Access to the bank’s or app provider’s official help channel, not a number supplied by an unsolicited caller. |
Set up UPI step by step
-
Install the official application
Open the official Android or iOS app store and install your bank’s app or a reputable UPI-enabled app. Check the developer name and keep the app-store version updated. Do not give a caller remote access to install or configure it.
-
Select the bank-registered SIM
Open the app and choose the SIM that contains the mobile number registered with your bank. If your phone has two SIMs, select the correct slot when prompted. Mobile verification identifies eligible accounts; registration may fail if the bank-registered number is inactive, moved to another SIM or different from the number entered at the bank.

Contact the bank if your registered number has changed.
-
Create an app passcode
Set the passcode used to open the payment app. When the app permits, make it different from your UPI PIN. Do not reuse a phone unlock code that someone else knows, and never disclose the passcode to support staff or another person.

Link your bank account
Select your bank from the list. The app retrieves available accounts through secure banking networks; NPCI says account details are retrieved in a masked manner. Choose the account you intend to use and check the masked account information before continuing.
If no account appears, the most common cause is a mismatch between the mobile number on the bank account and the SIM selected in the app. A bank may also restrict UPI for a particular account type. Use the bank’s official support channel rather than entering account details into an unverified website.

Create the UPI PIN
A UPI PIN is the 4–6 digit code you create during first-time registration. In BHIM’s documented setup, enter the last six digits and expiry date of the linked debit card, then choose a PIN when prompted. Your bank or app may offer another approved setup path.
Type the PIN only on the genuine payment screen. NPCI’s 7 October 2025 circular, OC-226, allows optional Aadhaar face authentication for PIN set or reset where a bank, app and device support it. The traditional card-based or existing PIN method remains available.
-
Confirm the account and UPI ID
Review the linked bank account, displayed virtual payment address and any default account setting. A UPI ID is an address used to route a payment; it is not your UPI PIN. Make a note of the app’s transaction-history and help sections so you can find a reference number later.

Make your first UPI payment safely
Ask the recipient for their UPI ID or use the recipient’s official QR code. Do not rely on a name shown in a chat alone: the payment page returned by the app is the point at which you verify the account that will receive the money.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Option 1: Pay by UPI ID
- Open the app and choose Send or its equivalent.
- Enter the recipient’s UPI ID exactly, or select a saved contact only if you recognize it.
- Enter the amount and review the payment page.
- Stop if the returned payee name is not the person or business you intended to pay. Correct the ID or cancel before proceeding.
- Enter your UPI PIN only after the name and amount are correct.
- Wait for the success screen and notification. Keep the transaction reference until the recipient confirms receipt.
Option 2: Pay by QR code
- Choose Scan & Pay and scan the recipient’s official QR code.
- Check the merchant or recipient information shown by the app. NPCI says QR scanning should display merchant information on the payment page.
- Enter or confirm the amount. A QR code may contain a fixed amount or allow you to enter one; do not assume either is correct.
- Authorize only the transaction you recognize by entering the UPI PIN.
- Wait for the success notification and retain the reference number.
A QR code can initiate an outgoing payment. Scanning is not the same as receiving money, and a stranger’s request to scan a code or enter a PIN to obtain a refund is a warning sign.
What the PIN does—and what it does not do
The UPI PIN authorizes a bank transaction that sends money. It is not needed for someone to send money to you. Anyone who asks for your UPI PIN, app passcode or OTP is asking for a secret that should remain private. NPCI states that bank customer support will not ask for your UPI PIN.
Security rules that prevent most first-payment mistakes
- Never share the UPI PIN, app passcode or OTP. Banks and legitimate support agents do not need these secrets to investigate a payment.
- Verify the payee name and amount before every PIN entry. Once a payment is initiated, NPCI’s FAQ says it cannot be stopped.
- Do not enter a PIN to receive money. Receiving funds does not authorize an outgoing transaction.
- Scan only an intended recipient’s QR code. Treat unexpected QR images in messages, calls or social posts as untrusted until you independently verify the recipient.
- Handle collect requests carefully. Approving a collect request authorizes the transaction displayed on your screen. Approve only requests you recognize and expect.
- Use the official app and support channel. Do not follow a support number sent by an unknown person or install a remote-control app at someone else’s instruction.
- Lock and update the phone. Use a device screen lock, install security updates and keep the payment app current. Avoid rooted or jail-broken devices for optional biometric features; NPCI requires compatibility and security validation for those implementations.
- Check notifications and history. After a successful QR payment, NPCI’s guidance says both payer and merchant should receive a notification. Compare the amount and reference with the recipient before closing the transaction.
Limits and newer authentication choices
NPCI’s current FAQ states that normal UPI transfers can be up to ₹1 lakh per transaction. Certain categories have higher ceilings, including up to ₹2 lakh, while IPO and Retail Direct transactions can reach up to ₹5 lakh. Your bank, account category, app and device may impose a lower limit, so use the amount shown by the app as the operative check before authorization.
| Use case or method | Limit or status | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Normal UPI transfer | Up to ₹1 lakh per transaction | NPCI current FAQ; bank and category limits can be lower. |
| Specified higher-limit categories | Up to ₹2 lakh | Only where the relevant category and bank support the higher ceiling. |
| IPO and Retail Direct transactions | Up to ₹5 lakh | Category-specific ceiling stated in NPCI’s FAQ. |
| Existing UPI PIN authentication | Available | OC-226 says users may continue using existing methods. |
| Aadhaar face authentication for PIN set/reset | Optional where implemented | Introduced by NPCI circular OC-226 dated 7 October 2025; requires participating bank, app and compatible device. |
| On-device biometric transaction authentication | Initially up to ₹5,000 | Optional and dependent on bank, app, device compatibility and required security validation. |
These alternatives do not replace the need to inspect the payee and amount. Authentication proves that you authorized the action; it does not correct a payment sent to the wrong account.

What to do when a payment fails, is pending or is debited
Wrong UPI PIN
A wrong PIN causes the transaction to fail. Repeated incorrect attempts may temporarily block UPI sending, depending on the bank. Stop guessing, use the app’s approved PIN-reset flow, and follow the bank’s instructions if the account becomes locked.
Payment shows failed but money was debited
NPCI says the money is refunded in this situation. Check the transaction status and your bank balance, then allow the stated reconciliation time. Contact the bank through its official support channel if the money has not returned within one hour, quoting the transaction reference, date, amount and beneficiary details.
Payment remains pending
A pending transaction may still reach the beneficiary. NPCI’s FAQ describes a scenario in which the beneficiary can receive the money within 48 hours. Check the final status in the app and with the bank before attempting the same payment again, because a second attempt could create a duplicate debit if the first one later completes.
Payment went to the wrong person
UPI payments generally cannot be stopped after initiation. Contact your bank immediately through its official dispute channel and provide the transaction reference. Recovery is not guaranteed, so the payee-name and amount check before PIN entry is the decisive safeguard.

If the app fails before you enter the PIN, look in transaction history for a pending or successful entry before retrying. Confirm that mobile data or Wi-Fi is working, the app is updated and the bank’s service is available. Never share an OTP or PIN with someone offering to “complete” the payment.

Lost phone, changed SIM or suspected compromise
Contact your bank promptly if the phone is lost, the bank-registered SIM is missing or you suspect unauthorized access. Ask the bank to secure or disable UPI access according to its procedure. NPCI notes that the UPI PIN is still required for transactions and recommends contacting bank support when a phone is lost, but you should not wait to report the loss.
After recovering your number on a replacement SIM, reinstall the official app from the app store, complete mobile verification again and review linked accounts, UPI IDs and transaction history. Change the app passcode if you think it was exposed. Report any unauthorized transaction through the bank’s official channel and preserve notifications, reference numbers and timestamps.
A practical first-payment checklist
- The app came from the official Android or iOS store.
- The selected SIM contains the number registered with the bank.
- The app passcode and UPI PIN are private and different where possible.
- The correct bank account and UPI ID are displayed.
- The payee name returned after entering the UPI ID or scanning the QR code matches the intended recipient.
- The amount is correct, including any amount prefilled by a QR code.
- You are authorizing an outgoing payment—not responding to a request to “receive” money.
- You have recorded the transaction reference and received a success notification.
How UPI security works in practice
Registration binds the app to the bank-registered mobile identity and a particular device. The linked bank account is retrieved through secure banking networks, and the UPI PIN supplies the user authorization for a payment. The payment screen’s payee information gives you a final opportunity to detect a wrong ID or altered QR request. Limits restrict the amount that can move in a single transaction, while device binding and two-factor authentication add controls around access and authorization.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Those controls work only when you keep the decision point under your control. A fraudster does not need your PIN to send you a collect request, but approving that request with your PIN can authorize the displayed debit. Likewise, a QR code is a convenient address for a payment, not proof that the person who sent it is trustworthy.
When to contact the bank instead of retrying
- Your bank-registered mobile number no longer matches the SIM you can use.
- No eligible account appears after successful mobile verification.
- Your UPI PIN is blocked after failed attempts.
- A debit has not been refunded within one hour after a failed transaction.
- A transaction remains pending and you need confirmation before paying again.
- You sent money to the wrong account or see an unauthorized transaction.
- Your phone or SIM has been lost, stolen or used by someone else.
Use only contact details published in the bank’s official app, website, card paperwork or branch. Give support the transaction reference and factual timeline, but never the UPI PIN, app passcode or OTP.
