Open your emulator’s input settings, arrange or hide the on-screen controls, then assign each physical controller button to a DS input. Keep touch available for games that use the lower screen: a gamepad can replace the DS buttons and D-pad, but it does not automatically replace stylus interaction.
What you are configuring
A Nintendo DS emulator on Android has two separate input systems. Software input is the virtual D-pad, face buttons, shoulder buttons and other controls drawn over the emulator display. Hardware input comes from a Bluetooth or USB gamepad that Android exposes to the emulator. You can use either system alone or combine them.

The important limitation is the DS lower screen. Original DS hardware used a resistive touchscreen and included a stylus. Games may expect taps, drags, handwriting, virtual keyboards, menu selection or other screen gestures. Mapping a gamepad button to a DS button does not create those touch gestures. Leave a usable touch area visible, or use an emulator feature that deliberately sends a touch action, whenever a game requires the lower screen.
Menu names and available options depend on the emulator and the build installed on your phone. The paths below describe the documented controls in melonDS Android and DraStic; if a label differs, look for the equivalent Input, Virtual Controller, Software Input or External Controller page rather than assuming the feature is absent.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Choose touch, controller or a combination
| Mode | Best fit | Touchscreen handling | What you must configure |
|---|---|---|---|
| Touch only | Short sessions, menu-heavy games, or when no physical pad is available | Keep the software overlay visible and place it where it does not cover important screen content | Select or edit a software-input layout; adjust visibility and opacity |
| Controller only | Games played mainly with the D-pad and buttons | Hide the software overlay after confirming that the game does not need stylus input | Connect the pad to Android and map every required emulator input |
| Mixed input | Games that use normal controls plus occasional lower-screen actions | Keep a small or transparent touch area available, or use a configured touch-action feature | Map the pad, then tune the software layout, opacity and touch behavior |
Mixed input is usually the safest starting point. Test the game before hiding software input permanently: a title can appear playable with a controller until a later puzzle, menu or minigame asks for a tap or stylus movement.
Prepare Android and the emulator
Connect and verify the controller
- Pair the Bluetooth controller in Android’s Bluetooth settings, or connect a USB controller through a compatible adapter.
- Check that Android shows the device as connected before opening the emulator. Android defines standard mappings for common controller classes, which can make setup easier, but that convention does not guarantee that every model will be detected or mapped the same way on every phone, Android release or emulator.
- Close other apps that may capture the controller, then launch the DS emulator and open its input settings.
If Android itself does not list the controller as connected, changing an emulator profile will not fix the problem. Resolve pairing, cable, adapter or permission issues at the operating-system level first.
Identify the installed emulator build
Do not copy desktop melonDS instructions into the Android port. The desktop project’s FAQ explicitly excludes unofficial Android ports, while the Android port has its own input-settings documentation. Likewise, DraStic’s external-controller instructions come from a third-party feature guide and may use different labels in your installed release. Treat the function as authoritative and the exact wording as version-dependent.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Set up touch controls in melonDS Android
Open the software-input controls
In melonDS Android, open Input in the emulator settings. The documented controls include Layouts, Show soft input and Soft input opacity. These three settings determine what the virtual controls look like and whether they remain on screen.
- Choose Layouts to select an existing software-input arrangement, create a new one or edit the current layout.
- Use the layout editor to place the virtual D-pad and buttons where your thumbs can reach them without covering the game area. Save the layout before leaving the editor.
- Turn Show soft input on while testing. This makes it clear which virtual control each touch region activates.
- Adjust Soft input opacity until the controls remain discoverable without obscuring the two DS screens. A low opacity is useful for mixed input, but an almost invisible overlay can make it difficult to find a touch region during play.
- If you want tactile feedback, review the documented touch-vibration option and its vibration-strength control. Disable vibration if it is distracting or if your phone’s haptics are excessive.
Make a controller-friendly layout
A physical pad does not require a large virtual overlay. Create a compact layout with only the touch regions you still need, reduce opacity, and keep it positioned over an unobstructed part of the display. Alternatively, leave the full layout visible until every game has passed testing, then hide it with Show soft input when you are using the controller.
Save separate layouts for different uses when the emulator allows it: one can prioritize thumb access for touch-only play, while another leaves the lower screen clear for a controller-and-touch setup. The names and save controls are handled inside the Layouts page, so confirm that the selected layout is the one active when you return to the game.

Set up virtual controls in DraStic
Adjust the on-screen controller
DraStic’s virtual-controller settings cover the on-screen controller skin, visibility, opacity, touch regions and related touch behavior. Open the virtual-controller or virtual-pad settings in your installed version and make these changes while a game is paused:
- Choose a skin or arrangement whose buttons do not cover text, menus or the lower-screen drawing area.
- Set visibility and opacity independently for touch-only and mixed-input play.
- Inspect the touch regions rather than judging only by the artwork; the active hit area can extend beyond the visible button.
- Look for the documented option that allows an on-screen controller press to touch the DS touchscreen beneath it. Enable it only when that behavior is intentional, because it can send an extra screen touch while you are pressing a virtual button.
This feature concerns the emulator’s virtual controls. A physical controller button does not automatically touch the emulated DS screen unless your installed DraStic version exposes and you configure a specific touch-related function.
Map a physical controller
melonDS Android: Input > Key mapping
- With the controller connected, open the emulator’s Input settings and select Key mapping.
- Choose the emulator input you want to assign, such as the D-pad directions, A, B, X, Y, Start, Select or the shoulder buttons.
- Press the corresponding physical control when prompted. Repeat for every input the game uses, including any emulator commands you want available during play.
- Save or confirm the mapping, then return to the game and test each direction and button. If the emulator offers more than one mapping profile, select the intended profile before launching the game.
Map controls by function rather than by the labels printed on a particular pad. Some controllers identify buttons using a different letter order, and Android’s standard mapping layer may expose a control differently from the marking on the shell.

DraStic: Options > External Controller
- Open Options, then choose External Controller. If your build uses a slightly different wording, look for the external-gamepad or controller-mapping page.
- Select a mapping slot or existing mapping.
- Use the map controls to assign the gamepad buttons and each D-pad direction to the desired DS inputs.
- Save the mapping, then verify it in a running game. The documented feature supports multiple saved mappings, which is useful when you switch between pads or prefer different layouts for different players.
Because these DraStic details are documented outside a versioned official manual, compare the labels on your screen with the functions above. Do not assume that a menu appearing in one release exists in another.
Test both input systems in a game
- Start with a game that uses ordinary movement and buttons. Press every D-pad direction, face button, shoulder button, Start and Select. Confirm that one press produces one expected action.
- Open a menu and navigate it. Menus can reveal a swapped A/B assignment or a missing Select button that is not obvious during movement.
- Use the lower screen as the game expects: tap a button, drag across an object or enter text if the title requires it. Confirm that the touch coordinates line up with your finger and that the overlay does not intercept the wrong screen.
- If you enabled a controller-to-touch option, test it separately from normal button mapping. Verify exactly where the emulated touch lands and whether the option sends an unintended touch every time the mapped control is pressed.
- Pause, reopen the input settings and confirm that the chosen layout and controller mapping remain selected after returning to the game.
There is no universal per-game touch requirement list established by these emulator settings. Test the specific title’s menus and touch actions instead of assuming that a controller profile proves complete compatibility.
When a DS game still needs the touchscreen
Actions a gamepad cannot reproduce by itself
A controller can cover directional and button input, but it cannot inherently reproduce a freehand stylus path, a tap at an arbitrary coordinate, a drag across the lower screen or a virtual-keyboard entry. Games built around drawing, pointing, handwriting, dragging objects or selecting small touch targets therefore need an active Android touchscreen path.

Ways to keep touch available
- Leave melonDS Android’s Show soft input enabled and use the phone screen for the required action.
- In DraStic, keep the virtual controller visible at a comfortable opacity and adjust its touch regions so the lower screen remains reachable.
- Use a deliberately configured emulator touch-action option when your version provides one, then verify the resulting location and gesture in the game.
- Consider a capacitive stylus only as an optional precision aid. It is not established as required equipment for Android emulation, and an Android capacitive screen does not behave exactly like the original DS resistive panel.
Compare the three practical setups
| Question | Touch only | Controller only | Mixed input |
|---|---|---|---|
| Does it handle ordinary DS buttons? | Yes, through virtual regions | Yes, after mapping and testing | Yes, using either input source |
| Does it handle arbitrary stylus taps and drags? | Yes, directly on the phone | No, unless an emulator-specific touch function is configured and suitable | Yes, with the phone retained for touch actions |
| Is an overlay required? | Yes | No after mapping, if the game has no touch requirement | Usually a reduced or low-opacity overlay is useful |
| Main setup risk | Controls obscure the screens or hit regions feel awkward | A button is unmapped, swapped or not detected | Both systems send input at once or the overlay hides a needed screen area |
| Best first test | Navigate a menu and perform a touch action | Test every mapped button and direction | Test buttons, then a real touchscreen gesture |
Troubleshoot common failures
The controller is connected but nothing responds
- Confirm Android still reports the controller as connected, then reopen the emulator’s mapping page.
- Check that you selected the intended mapping profile and that each input was assigned, rather than merely pairing the device.
- Press a control while the mapping page is actively waiting for input. If no event appears there, the problem is detection or focus, not the game’s controls.
- Disconnect and reconnect the controller, then repeat the mapping step. A controller connected after the emulator starts may not be selected automatically.
The wrong action occurs
Return to Key mapping in melonDS Android or Options > External Controller in DraStic and remap the affected input. Compare the emulator’s displayed input name with the physical button you pressed; do not rely on the controller’s printed lettering. Test one control at a time so a swapped pair is easy to identify.
The overlay blocks the game
In melonDS Android, change the selected Layout, move or resize regions in the layout editor, lower Soft input opacity, or disable Show soft input after controller testing. In DraStic, adjust the virtual-controller skin, opacity and touch regions. Re-test the lower screen after every change because a transparent-looking region can still intercept touches.
A game requires touch after you hide the controls
Restore software input visibility and perform the action on the phone. If you prefer to keep the overlay hidden, look for the emulator’s documented touch-related mapping option, but treat it as a shortcut for the supported action rather than a replacement for every stylus gesture.

Buttons work, but a virtual button also triggers a screen touch
Review DraStic’s virtual-controller touch behavior. Disable the option that makes an on-screen controller press touch the DS touchscreen beneath it unless the game needs that combined behavior. Then test the physical-controller mapping separately; physical buttons should not be assumed to generate screen touches.
The layout or mapping seems to disappear
Reopen the relevant settings page and verify the selected layout or mapping slot. Save the changes before leaving the editor, and check the selection again after returning to the game. If the labels or save behavior differ, follow the controls shown by your installed version rather than a guide written for another release.
A reliable setup sequence
- Connect the controller and verify it in Android.
- Open the emulator’s input page and leave software input visible.
- Map the D-pad, face buttons, shoulders, Start and Select.
- Play through a menu and a normal movement section.
- Perform at least one lower-screen tap or drag.
- Only then reduce opacity or hide the overlay, and save the layout or mapping profile.
This order separates Android detection, emulator mapping and game-specific touchscreen needs. It also gives you a known-good touch fallback if a later game exposes an interaction that the controller cannot provide.
