The Xbox workflow for Defold is approval-gated. Start by obtaining Microsoft approval for Xbox console development, then use an account tied to that approved organization to request Defold’s Xbox resources through Microsoft’s Xbox middleware page. Once Defold verifies your status, you receive the Xbox-specific extension, platform integrations, required development tools and the instructions for building, bundling and testing. You need Defold 1.14.0 or later; the normal public download does not contain an Xbox build target.
This is different from installing Defold for desktop development. A standard installation alone cannot produce an Xbox build, and the exact console tool versions, commands, hardware requirements and test sequence are restricted to approved developers. The steps below separate the public Microsoft onboarding process from the private Defold technical workflow so you know what can be completed immediately and what requires authorization.

What changed with Defold 1.14.0
On October 12, 2026, the Defold Foundation announced Xbox support for approved developers, and the 1.14.0 release notes confirmed the same milestone. Support is available only after Microsoft approval and Defold’s separate access verification. It is not a feature that appears automatically in every public Defold installation.
The release notes state that the standard public Defold download does not include an Xbox build target. If the editor or command-line tools you installed expose desktop targets but no Xbox option, that is expected for the public package rather than evidence that your project is misconfigured. The Xbox-capable package and its instructions are distributed through the restricted developer channel.

An older, publicly indexed Defold manual still says that Xbox is not supported and describes the Foundation as working toward middleware-provider status. That page predates the October 2026 announcement and should be treated as stale. For current availability, rely on the dated Foundation announcement, the 1.14.0 release notes and the instructions supplied to approved developers.
What you need before setting up the project
Microsoft Xbox approval
Xbox console development is not an open download-and-build workflow. Microsoft’s ID@Xbox onboarding begins with registration, an NDA and submission of a game concept for review. Microsoft’s developer-partner information also lists being at least 18, signing an NDA and residing in a country with which Microsoft can do business as basic conditions for beginning a developer or business relationship. Eligibility and program rules can change, so confirm the current requirements in Microsoft’s account portal before relying on them for a release plan.
Microsoft’s published onboarding statement is concise: “Your journey with ID@Xbox begins by registering on our site: www.xbox.com/id.” Registration is the starting point, not a guarantee that a project will be accepted or that a Defold access request will be approved.

An organization-linked account
The account you use for the Defold request must be associated with the organization approved for Xbox development. Personal accounts, accounts belonging to an unapproved studio and accounts signed into the wrong Microsoft tenant can prevent the middleware page from showing the correct entitlement.
Defold 1.14.0 or newer
Use Defold 1.14.0 or a later release that the private Xbox instructions identify as supported. Installing the latest public editor before approval is still useful for ordinary project work, but it will not add an Xbox target by itself.
Time for two separate approvals
There are two gates:
- Microsoft’s gate: registration, NDA and concept review for Xbox development and publishing.
- Defold’s gate: verification of your approved developer status before the Foundation supplies its Xbox-specific resources.
Plan for both gates in your schedule. Passing Microsoft’s review does not mean that the Defold package appears automatically, and requesting Defold access does not replace Microsoft’s onboarding.

The complete setup workflow
1. Define the Xbox scope before applying
Decide whether you are preparing a new Xbox release, porting an existing Defold game or evaluating feasibility for a prototype. Write down the intended Xbox platform, planned release window, team members who need access and the services your game may require. This is not paperwork for its own sake: Microsoft’s onboarding includes concept review, and Defold’s private package includes platform integrations that can affect your architecture.
Inventory features that will touch console services, such as user identity, saved games, achievements, commerce or multiplayer. Do not assume that a desktop implementation can be copied unchanged. The private Defold instructions identify the supported integrations and their setup requirements.
2. Register through Microsoft’s current ID@Xbox entry point
- Open Microsoft’s current ID@Xbox registration page at www.xbox.com/id.
- Create or use the account that represents your studio or business.
- Complete the requested registration and NDA steps.
- Submit the game concept and organization information requested for review.
- Keep the confirmation and use the same organization identity for subsequent Xbox and Defold requests.
Microsoft’s public material describes onboarding through release, but the live portal is the authority for the forms, eligibility questions and current sequence. Do not rely on an old screenshot or a copied application checklist if the portal presents different fields.
3. Wait for Microsoft’s approval before requesting Defold access
Defold checks developer status. Submitting the Defold request first, while your Microsoft organization is still pending, can leave the request unverified. When approval arrives, confirm that the account showing the approval is the one you will use on the Xbox middleware page. If your studio has multiple Microsoft tenants or partner accounts, resolve that identity issue before contacting Defold.
4. Find Defold on Microsoft’s Xbox middleware page
- Sign in with the account associated with the approved organization.
- Open Microsoft’s Xbox middleware catalog or middleware page.
- Search for Defold.
- Submit the access request for the Defold Xbox resources.
- Provide any organization or approval details the page requests.
The Foundation says it verifies the request and, after verification, provides access to the Xbox-specific resources and instructions. The exact page labels and approval timing can change, so follow the labels visible to your account rather than a generic tutorial written for another program year.

After access is granted, use the Defold release and package identified in the private documentation. The public editor and public download remain useful for non-Xbox targets, but they do not contain the Xbox build target. Keep the Xbox-capable installation separate from your ordinary Defold installation if the supplied instructions recommend separate paths or versions.

Record the Defold version, extension version and any companion tool versions in your project setup notes. Do not substitute a newer editor, extension or SDK merely because it is available publicly; console combinations are validated as a set in the authorized instructions.
6. Follow the gated build, bundle and test instructions
The private Defold package covers the Xbox extension, platform integrations such as user management and game saves, required development tools and workflow guidance for building, bundling and testing. Use that material as the authoritative procedure. It is intentionally not reproduced as a public command list because Microsoft’s console tools are subject to NDA restrictions.
At this stage your team should have a repeatable sequence that answers four questions:
- How is the Xbox target selected for a Defold project?
- Which project settings and extension configuration are required?
- How is a development bundle produced and deployed to an authorized test environment?
- Which test, submission and packaging checks must pass before certification?
If the private instructions introduce a required project file, environment variable, signing step or tool installation, copy those values exactly. Do not infer them from desktop Defold commands or from an unrelated engine’s Xbox workflow.
What the restricted Defold resources contain
The Foundation’s October 12 announcement identifies four categories of material supplied after verification:
- Xbox-specific Defold extension: the integration layer that adds the supported Xbox target to the approved Defold workflow.
- Platform integrations: services including user management and game saves.
- Required development tools: the console-authorized components needed to build and run the target.
- Workflow instructions: the Defold-specific process for building, bundling and testing.
The public announcement does not publish exact GDK or SDK versions, installer names, command lines, development-kit specifications or the order of test operations. Those details are available only through the authorized resources and Microsoft’s current documentation. Treat any unofficial list of versions or commands as unverified until it matches the package supplied to your organization.

Build and test planning without guessing at console details
Keep public and Xbox configurations distinct
Maintain a clear distinction between your normal Defold targets and the authorized Xbox target. Use source control to track project settings and extension changes, and document which configuration produced each test build. A developer who opens the project with only the public package should not be expected to see the Xbox target or reproduce an Xbox bundle.
Validate platform services early
User management and game saves are called out as platform integrations in the private package. Decide early where those services enter your game flow: first launch, sign-in changes, profile selection, suspend and resume, and save synchronization. The authorized instructions define the APIs and lifecycle rules; your design document should map those rules to menus, error states and offline behavior before content production is complete.
Use the supplied test sequence
Console testing is more than launching a local executable. Follow the private sequence for creating a development bundle, deploying it to authorized hardware or an approved environment, collecting logs and checking platform services. The public record does not establish the required hardware model, network topology or test-service configuration, so none should be guessed or purchased solely from a generic Xbox tutorial.
Separate development readiness from certification readiness
A build that runs for your team is not automatically ready for Xbox certification. Track technical defects, platform-service behavior, suspend and resume behavior, save handling, input, performance and submission metadata as separate work items. Microsoft’s certification requirements and test services are maintained in its authorized documentation and may change independently of Defold releases.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Publishing and certification are a separate workstream
ID@Xbox onboarding covers more than obtaining a build target. Microsoft describes a path that starts with registration and concept review, continues through preparing the game for the target platforms and ends with certification and release support. Its 2025 announcement about the public Game Publishing Guide says the guide covers signup, Partner Center, certification and test-service guidance.

Use that publishing material for account, store and certification milestones, while using Defold’s private documentation for engine integration. Neither document replaces the other. Defold can explain how to produce the Xbox bundle; Microsoft determines the authorized publishing, submission and certification process.

Troubleshooting the most common access problems
There is no Xbox target in Defold
First check whether you are running the standard public download. If you have not completed Microsoft approval and Defold verification, the missing target is expected. If access was granted, install the exact Xbox-capable package specified in the private instructions and verify the signed-in organization account. Do not attempt to manufacture an Xbox target by copying desktop files into the public installation.
The middleware page does not list Defold
Confirm that you are signed in with the organization-approved account, not a personal Microsoft account or a different tenant. Check that Microsoft approval is complete rather than merely submitted. If the account is correct and approved, use the support path supplied by Microsoft or Defold; the public information does not document alternate URLs or a manual entitlement process.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Defold cannot verify the request
Recheck the organization name, approval identity and email or tenant association used in both systems. Keep the Microsoft approval record available when contacting support. Defold’s stated process is verification before access, so repeatedly submitting the same request with mismatched identities is unlikely to solve the problem.
An old manual says Xbox is unsupported
Use the date on the page to identify the conflict. The older indexed manual predates the October 12, 2026 announcement and 1.14.0 release notes. Follow the newer Foundation announcement and the approved-developer instructions instead, while still treating any undocumented technical detail as unknown.
You found a tool or command list online
Do not install it into a production setup unless it matches the versions and instructions delivered to your approved organization. Console development tools are restricted, and the public sources do not establish a supported command line, SDK version or hardware requirement for Defold’s Xbox target.
A practical readiness checklist
- Define whether the project is a new Xbox title, a port or a feasibility prototype.
- Prepare the studio or business identity that will own the Microsoft account.
- Confirm age, NDA and country-of-business eligibility against Microsoft’s current page.
- Register through ID@Xbox and submit the concept for review.
- Wait for approval and verify the correct organization-linked account.
- Request Defold on Microsoft’s Xbox middleware page.
- Install Defold 1.14.0 or the later version named in the authorized instructions.
- Install only the companion tools supplied or required by those instructions.
- Configure the Xbox extension and platform integrations, including user management and game saves, according to the private documentation.
- Run the supplied build, bundle and test sequence before planning a submission.
- Track Microsoft publishing, Partner Center and certification tasks separately from engine integration.
- Keep version, account and package records so another approved team member can reproduce the setup.
The key decision is whether you have authorization, not whether a desktop Defold project opens successfully. Once Microsoft approval and Defold verification are complete, the private package is the source of truth for every Xbox-specific command, tool and test requirement.
