How to set up the TCL P8L for PS5 and Xbox gaming

For either console, use a direct HDMI connection to the TCL P8L, select that television input, and verify the signal reported by both devices. The P8L is advertised with a 144 Hz native panel and a 4K 144 Hz signal path, but the console, game, HDMI input and cable still determine the signal you actually receive. Follow the PS5 settings below; for Xbox, use the same direct-connection method and the video options shown by your particular console because an exact, region-independent Xbox menu sequence is not established here.

What the TCL P8L can—and cannot—promise for console gaming

TCL’s current global P8L product page and the UK 55P8L page publish these television specifications:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Published feature What it means for a console owner Important qualification
144 Hz native refresh rate The panel can refresh at up to 144 times per second when the source and input mode support it. This is a TCL specification, not an independent measurement, and it does not make a game output at 144 Hz.
4K 144 Hz signal path The television is designed to accept a 4K signal at up to 144 Hz under the supported input conditions. Current consoles commonly target 4K at up to 120 Hz; the console and the game, rather than the television’s 144 Hz ceiling, set the actual frame rate.
288 Hz VRR Game Accelerator A high-refresh gaming mode intended for compatible sources. TCL specifically says “288 VRR Game Accelerator is achievable via HDMI 1 and 2 ports.” Do not treat 288 Hz as a normal PS5 or Xbox output, or assume it is available on every HDMI input.
Screen sizes The global page lists 55-, 65-, 75- and 85-inch versions. Port capabilities and labels can vary by region and size. The pages do not provide a complete, size-by-size console port matrix.

These are manufacturer-published claims. They establish what the P8L is designed to handle, not a guaranteed result for every console, title or regional model. A television that accepts 4K 144 Hz can still show a console at 4K 60 Hz, 4K 120 Hz or 1080p 120 Hz depending on the source negotiation and game.

Before connecting a console

Find the suitable HDMI input

Read the manual for the exact P8L model and region before choosing a port. TCL’s public pages explicitly associate the 288 Hz VRR Game Accelerator claim with HDMI 1 and HDMI 2, but they do not establish that every P8L input has identical bandwidth or that every market uses the same labels. If the manual identifies a particular input as HDMI 2.1-capable or as the high-bandwidth gaming input, use that one for a console intended to run 4K at 120 Hz.

Use a direct connection first

Connect the PS5 or Xbox directly to the television. Leave an AV receiver, soundbar pass-through, HDMI switch and capture device out of the chain while you establish the video signal. Intermediate equipment can negotiate a lower mode even when both the console and television support a higher one.

Have the right cable available

For PS5 troubleshooting, Sony recommends starting with the HDMI cable supplied with the console. If that cable is unavailable or suspected, use an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable explicitly rated for 4K 120 Hz. A cable marketed only as “high speed” without a stated 4K 120 Hz capability is not a useful diagnostic choice.

PS5: complete setup procedure

1. Connect and select the input

  1. Turn off the PS5 and the P8L if you are rearranging cables.
  2. Connect the PS5 directly to the HDMI input identified in the P8L manual for the desired high-bandwidth mode. Begin with the cable supplied with the console.
  3. Turn on the television and press the input/source control until the selected HDMI input is displayed.
  4. Turn on the PS5 and wait for its home screen. If there is no picture, use the troubleshooting section below before changing several settings at once.

2. Inspect the detected display

On the PS5, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. Review the connected HDMI device information and the current output signal. This screen tells you what the console has negotiated; the P8L’s advertised maximum is not proof that the PS5 is currently sending 4K or 120 Hz.

3. Set the resolution

Leave Resolution on Automatic for normal use so the PS5 can negotiate a supported mode. If you are diagnosing a missing 4K signal, Sony’s troubleshooting guidance also allows selecting 2160p directly. After changing the setting, check the reported output again rather than assuming the change succeeded.

4. Enable 120 Hz output for supported games

In Video Output, turn on 120 Hz Output using the enabled or automatic option shown by your PS5. This setting makes 120 Hz available to games that support it; it does not force every title to render at 120 frames per second. A game may remain at 60 Hz, use a performance mode, or change resolution to maintain its target frame rate.

5. Configure VRR

Enable VRR only when the television, the console and the game all support the feature. VRR lets the display follow changing frame timing instead of holding one fixed refresh interval. Results can vary by television, so verify the output information after enabling it and consult the P8L manual if the option is absent or greyed out.

6. Configure ALLM

Use the ALLM option in the same Video Output area if it is available. Sony describes ALLM as a way for a compatible television to switch into a low-latency mode while gaming. The P8L’s exact control name and availability can differ by regional firmware, so confirm the setting in the television manual instead of assuming that every P8L variant exposes the same menu.

7. Recheck the negotiated signal

Return to the output information after each significant change. Record the displayed resolution and refresh rate while the PS5 is on its home screen, then check again inside a game that advertises 120 Hz or VRR support. A 4K 120 Hz result in one game is not evidence that every game will use that mode.

Understanding PS5 output numbers

4K 120 Hz is a capability, not a universal game setting

Sony’s guide states that “The PS5 console supports the HDMI 2.1 specification, and it also supports 4K 120Hz video output.” That statement describes the console’s capability when the display chain and software support the mode. It does not guarantee 4K 120 Hz in every title. The game may select a different performance or quality mode, and a display handshake can fall back to a lower signal.

Why a PS5 may show 1080p at 120 Hz

A 1080p 120 Hz report usually means the console found a 120 Hz path but did not establish the desired 4K mode. Check the television firmware, the HDMI input selected, the cable, the direct connection and the PS5 resolution setting. Sony’s troubleshooting guide covers this exact type of fallback and recommends using Automatic or 2160p resolution while leaving Video Transfer Rate on Auto.

Video Transfer Rate: use non-default values only as a diagnostic

Keep Video Transfer Rate on Automatic initially. Sony notes that changing it to -1 or -2 limits certain 4K 120 Hz output options. Those values can be useful when a 4K signal flickers or drops out, but they are not performance enhancements and should not be the first setting you change if the goal is maximum resolution and refresh rate.

Xbox: a safe, model-neutral setup

The available TCL material identifies gaming features but does not provide a verified, region-independent Xbox Series X|S menu sequence for 4K 120 Hz, VRR or diagnostics. The following procedure avoids inventing labels that may not match your console’s system software.

1. Connect the console directly

  1. Use the P8L manual to identify the HDMI input intended for the highest-bandwidth gaming mode. TCL’s 288 Hz claim is explicitly tied to HDMI 1 and 2, but that is not a complete regional port table.
  2. Connect the Xbox directly to that input with a cable rated for the mode you are testing. Keep receivers, switches and pass-through soundbars disconnected until the direct signal works.
  3. Select the matching HDMI input on the P8L and wait for the Xbox dashboard.

2. Check what the Xbox detects

Open the Xbox video or display settings screen and inspect the capabilities reported for the connected television. Menu wording and available checks can change with Xbox system software and console model; use the options actually displayed by your system rather than copying a path from a different version.

3. Test one target mode at a time

If the console offers resolution, refresh-rate, HDR or VRR checks, change one item, apply it, and confirm whether the P8L remains stable. Test in a game that advertises the feature. Do not assume that a 4K 120 Hz choice in the console dashboard means every game will render at that rate.

4. Keep the connection simple while diagnosing

If the Xbox reports a lower mode or loses the picture, return to the direct connection, verify the input label against the manual and try the console’s supplied cable or another cable with a documented 4K 120 Hz rating. Once the direct path is reliable, add an audio or switching device and test again; if the signal then falls back, that intermediary is the likely limiting component.

Using the P8L’s gaming controls

TCL presents a Gamebar and says it provides screen designs for major console types. The public pages do not establish one exact remote-control sequence or a universal control name for every local P8L variant. Open the gaming or Gamebar control using the instructions for your television’s firmware, and note the input-specific settings it reports.

Use the Gamebar as a status and convenience tool, not as proof that a console is outputting a particular frame rate. Confirm resolution and refresh rate on the console and, where available, in the P8L’s signal-information panel. If a low-latency or game picture mode is offered, apply it to the HDMI input used by the console and check that your preferred brightness, HDR and motion settings remain acceptable.

Troubleshooting decision guide

Symptom Checks in the order that usually isolates it
No image after connecting the console Confirm the television is on the matching HDMI input; reseat both ends of the cable; connect the console directly; try the input identified by the P8L manual; then test the supplied or a certified replacement cable.
PS5 shows 1080p at 120 Hz instead of 4K 120 Hz Update the P8L firmware; use the correct high-bandwidth input; bypass receivers and switches; set PS5 Resolution to Automatic or 2160p; leave Video Transfer Rate on Automatic; and verify the cable is rated for 4K 120 Hz.
4K 120 Hz flickers or repeatedly loses sync Return Video Transfer Rate to Automatic, reseat or replace the cable, remove intermediary equipment, confirm the input and firmware, and only then test -1 or -2 as a diagnostic trade-off. Remember that those values restrict some 4K 120 Hz options.
120 Hz works in the dashboard but not in a game Check whether that specific game supports 120 Hz and whether its own performance setting must be selected. A compatible television and console do not make unsupported software run at 120 Hz.
VRR is unavailable or does not engage Confirm that VRR is enabled on the console and television, that the game supports it, and that the connection is direct. If the option remains unavailable, consult the exact P8L manual because VRR behavior and labels can vary by model and firmware.
ALLM does not switch picture mode Confirm ALLM support and naming in the P8L manual, enable the console’s ALLM option where offered, and test with a compatible game. Sony notes that a compatible television is required.
The signal fails only after adding a receiver or switch Remove that device and retest direct to the P8L. If direct 4K 120 Hz is stable but the chained setup is not, check the intermediary’s documented bandwidth and HDMI features before reconnecting it.

Cable and accessory decisions

Do not buy a replacement cable simply because the P8L advertises 144 Hz. First test the PS5’s included cable or the Xbox cable supplied with your console, verify the selected input and remove intermediaries. If the problem persists, search for an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K 120 Hz and choose one whose specification states that capability. The cable is a troubleshooting variable, not a guarantee that a game will produce 120 frames per second.

Port, size and regional caveats

The global P8L listing covers 55, 65, 75 and 85-inch models, while the UK listing is specifically for the 55P8L. A port number printed on one regional set should not be treated as a universal map for every size or market. Before publishing a permanent cable arrangement, read the manual supplied with your exact television and note which input supports the mode you want.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The same caution applies to menu names. TCL’s pages mention a Gamebar and console-oriented designs, but they do not document a stable sequence for every firmware version. Sony’s PS5 menu path is documented above; Xbox labels and available tests should be taken from the current software on the console in front of you.

Practical setup checklist

  • Identify the high-bandwidth HDMI input in the exact P8L manual.
  • Connect the console directly to that input and select it on the television.
  • Start with the console’s supplied HDMI cable.
  • On PS5, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output and inspect the detected device and signal.
  • Use Automatic resolution for normal PS5 operation; test 2160p when diagnosing a 4K problem.
  • Enable 120 Hz Output, VRR and ALLM only where the console, television and game support them.
  • Leave PS5 Video Transfer Rate on Automatic unless Sony’s diagnostic procedure calls for a test at -1 or -2.
  • Check the output again inside a compatible game.
  • If the signal is unstable, update television firmware, verify the input, bypass intermediaries and test a certified 4K 120 Hz cable.
  • For Xbox, use the video settings and capability checks shown by your console; do not assume a PS5 menu path applies.
