To set up a Samsung Galaxy Watch8 Classic with an Android phone, install Samsung’s Galaxy Wearable app, turn on Bluetooth, and follow the pairing prompts in the app and on the watch. First check that your phone meets Samsung’s compatibility requirements: Android 12 or later and at least 1.5 GB of RAM is the conservative baseline, but Samsung’s regional pages do not fully agree.
Check whether your Android phone is compatible
Samsung’s US troubleshooting table lists Android 12.0 or later and at least 1.5 GB of RAM for the Watch8 series, including the Watch8 Classic, on Samsung and non-Samsung phones. It says tablets and iOS devices are not supported. Samsung Canada’s newer troubleshooting page gives the same baseline, but another Canadian compatibility article, updated June 3, 2026, says Android 11.0 or later. Because Samsung’s own guidance conflicts, Android 12 or later is the safer baseline—not a guarantee for every handset or country. Set up the Galaxy Watch8 Classic
- Prepare the watch and phone. Charge and power on the watch. On the phone, turn on Bluetooth in Settings or Quick Settings.
- Install Galaxy Wearable. Get Samsung’s Galaxy Wearable app from the Google Play Store, then open it. Samsung describes the app as the connection point between a compatible phone and smartwatch: Samsung’s smartwatch setup guide.
- Start pairing. Tap Start if the app shows that option, choose Galaxy Watch8 Classic from the device list, and follow the prompts. Confirm that the code or pairing request shown on the phone matches the one on the watch when asked.
- Accept terms and choose permissions. Review and accept applicable terms, then allow permissions needed for the functions you want to use. The wording and order of screens can differ by phone, software version, provider, or watch.
- Sign in and decide whether to restore. Sign in to any accounts the setup flow requests. If a backup from a previous Samsung watch is offered, choose whether to restore it or set up as new. Restore options may include apps, phone settings, Samsung Health data, watch settings, watch face, tiles, widgets, and messages.
- Handle cellular activation only if it applies. If your Watch8 Classic has cellular service and you want to use it, follow the carrier activation prompts. Samsung says this step can be skipped if you do not want cellular service or have a Wi-Fi model.
- Check the connection and set preferences. When setup finishes, confirm Galaxy Wearable shows the watch as connected. Then configure preferences such as notifications and calls. Connected features may also include photo transfer and Samsung Health syncing, depending on compatibility and configuration. What to do if pairing fails
Try these checks in order before considering more disruptive steps:

- Confirm Bluetooth is enabled on both devices and recheck the phone’s compatibility.
- Make sure Galaxy Wearable is installed and updated.
- Move the phone and watch close together, with as few walls or electronic obstacles between them as possible. Samsung gives 10 m (32 ft) as the maximum Bluetooth range, while noting that the actual distance depends on the environment; staying closer is more reliable. - Restart both the phone and watch, reopen Galaxy Wearable, and try again.
- If the watch was paired before or its screen does not match the setup flow, use the app’s add-device option or the reconnection route shown on the watch for its software version. Avoid a factory reset as an early fix: it can erase watch data.
Which features will work with a non-Samsung phone?
The Galaxy Watch8 Classic can pair with compatible non-Samsung Android phones, but pairing does not guarantee that every feature will be available. Samsung warns that screens and settings can vary, and some functions may depend on the phone, software, region, or carrier. Check the requirements for any particular feature you rely on rather than assuming health, payment, or cellular functions work identically across phones.
