How to Set Up the Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 and Transfer Data From Your Old Watch

Use the workflow that matches your situation: set up the new Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 in the Galaxy Wearable app and accept the restore prompt when you are replacing an old watch; use Settings > General > Transfer watch to new phone on the watch when you are keeping the same watch but changing phones. Back up the old watch before either process. The exact labels can differ by country, phone, watch software and app version.

First, identify which transfer you need

Samsung documents two different jobs that are often confused:

Your situation Where to start What happens
You are replacing the old watch with a Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 Open Galaxy Wearable on the new Android phone and set up the new watch During setup, Samsung may offer a restore from a previous Samsung watch. You can select the categories to bring over.
You are keeping the existing watch but moving it to a different phone On the watch, open Settings > General > Transfer watch to new phone The watch may reset and lose data, depending on its model and software. Back up before confirming the transfer.

Do not use the second procedure merely because you bought a new watch. It is intended to move an existing watch to another phone. A replacement Ultra 2 should be paired as a new watch, followed by the restore option offered in Galaxy Wearable.

Check compatibility and prepare both devices

Samsung’s United States Wear OS guidance lists Android 6.0 or later, at least 1.5 GB of RAM and Google Mobile Services as minimum requirements for Wear OS Galaxy watches. That page does not name the Ultra 2 specifically, and Samsung’s model naming differs by market, so treat those figures as general US guidance rather than a guarantee for every regional Ultra 2 variant. Check the support information for the exact model sold in your country.

Wear OS Galaxy watches are not compatible with iOS according to Samsung’s US guidance. You need an Android phone with Bluetooth enabled and the Galaxy Wearable app installed. A Samsung account is required for the Ultra 2 backup procedure, and the phone may also ask you to sign in to a Google account during setup.

  • Install or update Galaxy Wearable on the Android phone that will control the watch.
  • Turn on Bluetooth and keep the phone close to the watch during pairing.
  • Power on the watch and have its charging equipment available so the process is not interrupted.
  • Know whether the watch is a Bluetooth/Wi-Fi model or an LTE model. Carrier activation appears only when relevant.
  • Keep the old watch and old phone available until you have confirmed that the backup and restore are usable.
  • Record sign-in details for apps that may require their own authentication after restoration.

Samsung notes that screens and settings can vary by phone, provider, watch model and software version. Use the equivalent label shown on your devices if a menu is arranged differently.

Back up the old watch before disconnecting or resetting it

Samsung Japan’s Watch Ultra2 support page, updated August 3, 2026, describes a manual backup. It sends the backup through Smart Switch and also saves it to Samsung Cloud. A Samsung account is required.

  1. On the phone currently paired with the watch, open Galaxy Wearable.
  2. Open the watch settings screen. Depending on the version, this may be shown as Watch settings or a settings icon.
  3. Tap Accounts and backup.
  4. If Galaxy Wearable offers to launch Smart Switch, accept it.
  5. In Smart Switch, choose Back up data.
  6. Tap Back up now and wait for the operation to finish.

If Smart Switch does not open automatically, continue to the backup-data control shown under Accounts and backup. The Japanese instructions state that the menu layout and available steps can vary by device and software version.

Do not erase, trade in or disconnect the old watch until the backup has completed. Leave the phone connected to the internet and signed in to the Samsung account used for the backup. If the backup control is missing, update Galaxy Wearable and the phone’s Samsung components, then look again under the watch’s settings rather than resetting the watch first.

Set up a replacement Galaxy Watch Ultra 2

This is the correct procedure when the Ultra 2 is a new watch and the old watch is being replaced.

1. Start the watch and select its language

Turn on the Ultra 2 and choose the language shown on the watch. Keep it near the Android phone. If the watch displays a pairing request, leave it on that screen while you continue.

2. Open Galaxy Wearable on the new phone

  1. Launch Galaxy Wearable.
  2. If no watch is listed, use the app’s Add device path.
  3. Select the detected Galaxy Watch Ultra 2. If several nearby devices appear, match the model name and confirmation code.
  4. Accept the Bluetooth and connection prompts on both the phone and watch.

Samsung’s pairing guidance also describes the simpler first-pair sequence: power on the watch, select the language, bring it close to the phone, make sure Bluetooth is on and accept the connection prompt.

3. Sign in when requested

Follow the on-screen prompts to sign in to your Samsung account and, where requested, your Google account. These accounts are separate from the Bluetooth pairing itself and may be needed for backup restoration, app downloads or Google services.

4. Choose the previous watch when restoration is offered

Samsung’s setup flow may identify a previous Samsung watch and offer to restore it. Select the old watch associated with the backup. The listed restore categories are:

  • Apps
  • Phone
  • Quick panel
  • Samsung Health
  • Settings
  • Watch face
  • Tiles
  • Widgets
  • Messages

Select only the categories you want on the Ultra 2, then continue through the prompts. The availability of a category can depend on the old watch, the new watch, the account and the installed software.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Understand what the restore does not promise

The setup page lists the Samsung restore categories but does not promise a complete copy of every app’s private data. Some apps may require you to sign in again, download content again or enable their own cloud synchronisation. A restored watch face, setting or message category also does not guarantee that every third-party app preference will return.

6. Complete mobile-service activation only if you need it

If the Ultra 2 is an LTE model and you want cellular service, Galaxy Wearable may display a carrier activation step. Follow the carrier’s prompts and confirm the plan details. Samsung says this step can be skipped for a Wi-Fi/Bluetooth model or when you do not want mobile service. Skipping activation does not prevent you from completing the basic watch setup.

7. Finish and inspect the watch

Allow the setup and restoration process to complete before closing Galaxy Wearable. Open the watch’s app list, check the selected watch face, review tiles and widgets, and confirm that Samsung Health and messages show the expected information. For apps with their own accounts, open each important app and complete any requested sign-in.

Move an existing watch to a new Android phone

Use this workflow when the watch itself is staying with you and only the phone is changing. Samsung’s UK reconnection instructions, updated April 14, 2026, begin on the watch rather than in the phone app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. On the existing watch, open Settings.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Choose Transfer watch to new phone.
  4. Read the confirmation screen and approve the transfer only after you have completed the backup described above.
  5. On the new Android phone, install and open Galaxy Wearable.
  6. Select the watch when it appears and follow the connection prompts.
  7. Sign in to the requested Samsung and Google accounts, then complete the available restore or setup screens.

Depending on the watch model and software, confirming the transfer can reset the watch. A reset can remove locally stored data, which is why the backup must happen before this menu is confirmed. If the transfer option is absent, do not assume that another reset command is equivalent; check the exact model’s current menu and software version.

What the Samsung restore categories mean

Category shown during setup Practical expectation
Apps Samsung’s setup flow can offer installed apps for restoration. Individual apps may still need downloading, permissions or a separate sign-in.
Phone Phone-related settings or connections offered by the restore flow may return; the exact items depend on the devices and software.
Quick panel Quick-panel arrangement can be restored when the option is available.
Samsung Health Samsung Health data included in the account and backup flow can be offered for restoration. Confirm that the correct Samsung account is being used.
Settings Supported watch settings can be brought to the new watch, but hardware- or software-specific options may not have an equivalent.
Watch face The selected face and supported preferences can be restored if the face is available on the Ultra 2.
Tiles Supported tile arrangement and selections can be restored.
Widgets Supported widgets can be restored; a widget whose app is missing may not appear until that app is installed.
Messages Messages offered by Samsung’s restore flow can be selected, subject to the account, software and device involved.

This is a category-based Samsung restore, not a guarantee that every byte of the old watch will be reproduced. Treat app-specific account data, downloaded media and services controlled by a carrier or third party as items to verify separately.

Troubleshoot the most common setup failures

The Ultra 2 is not detected

  • Confirm that the watch is powered on and still near the phone.
  • Turn Bluetooth off and back on, then reopen Galaxy Wearable.
  • Use Add device in Galaxy Wearable instead of waiting for the first automatic card.
  • Remove an incorrect or abandoned pairing entry from the phone’s Bluetooth settings, then start pairing again from Galaxy Wearable.
  • Check that the phone meets Samsung’s general Wear OS requirements and has Google Mobile Services.

Do not pair through the phone’s Bluetooth settings alone and then skip Galaxy Wearable; the watch’s setup, account and restore controls are handled in the app.

The phone shows a different watch

Move other nearby watches away temporarily, verify the model name displayed on the watch, and compare the confirmation code before accepting. If an old watch remains listed in Galaxy Wearable, use the app’s device-management controls to select the intended watch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The restore prompt does not appear

Check that you signed in to the same Samsung account used for the backup and that the backup completed under Galaxy Wearable > watch settings > Accounts and backup. Update Galaxy Wearable and Smart Switch, then restart the phone and begin the Ultra 2 setup again. Samsung’s setup page does not promise that the restore screen appears for every device combination, so a missing prompt can reflect model, region or software differences rather than a failed Bluetooth connection.

The backup menu or Smart Switch launch is missing

Open the watch settings inside Galaxy Wearable, not only the phone’s general Settings app. Look for Accounts and backup and then the backup-data control. Menu names can change with the installed version. If the watch is already disconnected or reset, the old local data may no longer be recoverable through this procedure.

The old watch asks to be reset during phone transfer

Stop and verify the backup before accepting. Samsung warns that the existing-watch-to-new-phone procedure may reset the watch depending on model and software. If there is no current backup, keep the old phone and watch paired and complete the manual backup first.

LTE activation is unavailable or fails

Confirm whether the watch is an LTE model and whether the new phone, carrier and account support the requested service. If you only need Wi-Fi/Bluetooth operation, skip the carrier step and finish setup. Carrier screens are not shown for every watch or region.

Some apps or data are missing after restoration

Open Galaxy Wearable and the watch’s app list to see whether the app needs to be installed again. Launch the app and sign in with its own account. Check Samsung Health under the Samsung account used for the backup. The Samsung setup documentation lists restore categories but does not guarantee third-party app-private data.

Post-setup verification checklist

  • Confirm the watch is connected in Galaxy Wearable and appears under the intended device name.
  • Check the selected watch face, tiles, widgets and Quick panel arrangement.
  • Open Samsung Health and verify that the expected profile and synchronised information are present.
  • Test a notification and, if relevant, a message response.
  • Open essential third-party apps and complete any sign-in or permission request.
  • For LTE models, verify service only after the carrier activation process has completed successfully.
  • Keep the old watch untouched until these checks are complete and you are satisfied with the restored setup.

Regional and software-version qualifications

The official material uses different names in different markets: Samsung Japan explicitly refers to “Watch Ultra2,” while Samsung’s US Wear OS page lists “Watch Ultra” without naming Ultra2. That difference does not establish that firmware, compatibility or menus are identical worldwide. The phone, watch edition, carrier and software version can all change the screens you see.

For an exact compatibility decision, use the support information for the regional model printed on your watch or packaging. For the procedure itself, follow the labels shown in your installed Galaxy Wearable version, while preserving the two key rules: back up before a reset-capable transfer, and use the new-watch restore flow when replacing the watch.
