Connect the DG310’s fixed USB-C host cable to a handheld that supports USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode and USB Power Delivery, connect your monitor and accessories to the dock, then plug in a separate USB-C PD charger. The dock can pass through up to 80 W when paired with a 100 W-or-higher charger, and its HDMI 2.1 output is rated for up to 4K at 144 Hz or 8K at 30 Hz, subject to the handheld, cable and display.
What you need before connecting the DG310
The DG310 is a single-cable USB-C dock. Its fixed 60 cm cable carries video, USB data and charging between the dock and the handheld, but that works only when the handheld’s USB-C port supports both USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode and USB Power Delivery. ASUS states that compatible operating systems do not need a separate dock driver.

Prepare these items:
- ROG Bulwark Dock DG310.
- A ROG Ally, Steam Deck or another handheld with USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode and USB Power Delivery.
- One HDMI cable and a monitor or TV with an available HDMI input. Use an HDMI 2.1 cable if you are targeting high refresh rates or 8K output.
- A USB-C PD charger for the dock. ASUS does not include one and recommends a charger rated at 100 W or higher for the dock’s full 80 W passthrough capability.
- Optional USB peripherals, such as a controller, keyboard, mouse or storage drive.
- An Ethernet cable if you want a wired network connection.
Place the dock on a stable, ventilated surface before plugging anything in. The host cable is permanently attached, exits at a 90-degree angle and is 60 cm long, so position the handheld close enough that the plug reaches without bending or pulling on the connector.
DG310 ports and limits at a glance
Knowing what each port can do prevents the most common setup mistakes. The DG310 has one host USB-C cable, one USB-C power input, one HDMI output, three USB-A data ports and Gigabit Ethernet.

There is only one HDMI output. The DG310 is therefore a one-external-display dock; it cannot independently drive two monitors from its built-in video output.
ASUS lists the dock at 181.6 × 86.6 × 31.6 mm and approximately 262 ±10 g. The box contains the dock, a user manual and a warranty card. A charging brick is not in the box.
Connect a ROG Ally step by step
1. Position the dock and Ally
Set the dock on a firm surface with enough room for the HDMI, power, USB and Ethernet plugs. Put the ROG Ally where the fixed cable can reach its USB-C port naturally. Do not let the cable suspend the handheld’s weight or force the connector sideways.

Plug an HDMI cable into the DG310’s HDMI 2.1 port and the other end into the monitor or TV. Use the display’s HDMI input that supports the desired resolution and refresh rate; some televisions reserve their highest-bandwidth features for a specific HDMI socket. Leave the display powered on or in standby while completing the rest of the connections.
3. Add USB peripherals and network
Connect a controller, keyboard, mouse or storage device to any of the three USB-A ports. All three run at up to 5 Gbps, but two provide up to 5 V/0.9 A while one provides up to 5 V/1.5 A. Put a higher-draw accessory on the 1.5 A port when practical, and remember that several bus-powered devices share the dock’s available power.
For wired networking, connect an Ethernet cable to the dock’s Gigabit Ethernet port. The Ally should expose the wired adapter through the single USB-C connection once the host cable is attached.

4. Connect power to the dock
Plug your USB-C PD charger into the dock’s USB-C power input. A 100 W-or-higher charger is the practical choice if you want the published maximum of up to 80 W delivered through the dock. Lower-rated chargers may still operate the dock, but the handheld can receive less power, particularly while gaming or while several USB devices are active.
The charger is connected to the dock, not directly to a second USB-C port on the Ally. The dock then passes negotiated USB Power Delivery to the handheld through the host cable.
5. Attach the host cable
Insert the fixed USB-C host plug into the Ally’s USB-C port. Push it in fully and keep the cable free of tension. The single connection should carry display output, USB peripherals, Ethernet and charging when the Ally and its port support the required standards.
6. Select the input and configure Windows
Choose the HDMI input used by the dock on the monitor or TV. Windows on the Ally should detect the external display without a dock-specific driver. Open Settings > System > Display to choose whether to duplicate, extend or show the desktop only on the external screen. Select the external display, open Advanced display, and choose a resolution and refresh rate that both the Ally and the display support.
If you are aiming for HDR, variable refresh rate or automatic low-latency mode, enable the relevant option on the display as well as in Windows or the game. The dock can carry those signals, but it cannot add a feature that the handheld, HDMI cable, monitor or TV does not provide.

1. Connect everything to the dock first
Valve’s Steam Support guidance is to plug the display, peripherals, Ethernet and power into the dock before attaching the dock to the Steam Deck. Connect the HDMI cable, USB devices, Ethernet cable and USB-C PD charger in that order or in any order before the host connection. This gives the Deck a complete dock configuration to enumerate when it connects.

2. Verify the charger and port requirements
Steam Deck docking requires USB-C Power Delivery passthrough for charging. The Deck’s USB-C port must also support display functions such as DisplayPort Alt Mode. The DG310 cannot convert a USB-C port that lacks those capabilities into a video output.
3. Attach the DG310 to the Deck
Once the dock is populated, connect its fixed USB-C host cable to the Steam Deck. Keep the cable straight enough to avoid strain, especially when the Deck is resting on a stand or in a case. The Deck should then detect the HDMI display and USB accessories.
4. Choose the external display mode
On the Steam Deck, open the display controls from the desktop environment to set the external monitor’s resolution, refresh rate and arrangement. In Gaming Mode, return to the game after the display is active and select a resolution and frame-rate target the Deck can actually render. The DG310’s HDMI specification is an output ceiling, not a guarantee that every Deck game will run at 4K or 144 Hz.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBecause the DG310 has one HDMI output, this workflow supports one external display at a time. The Deck’s own screen can remain available depending on the selected display mode, but the dock does not provide a second external video output.
What resolution and refresh rate should you expect?
ASUS rates the DG310’s HDMI 2.1 output for up to 3840 × 2160 at 144 Hz or 7680 × 4320 at 30 Hz. HDR, VRR and ALLM are also listed. Those figures describe what the dock can transport under suitable conditions; the achieved mode is determined by the complete chain:
- Handheld graphics and USB-C implementation: The Ally or Deck must generate the selected signal and expose it through DisplayPort Alt Mode.
- HDMI cable: A cable without enough bandwidth can force a lower refresh rate or resolution. Use an HDMI 2.1-rated cable when targeting 4K at high refresh rates or 8K.
- Display input: A monitor or TV may support its maximum refresh rate only on a particular HDMI socket or only after an enhanced HDMI mode is enabled in its menu.
- Operating-system settings: Windows or SteamOS can default to a safe mode until you select the desired rate manually.
- Game workload: A display may be set to 4K/144 Hz even when a game renders at a lower resolution or frame rate.
For a practical setup, begin with the display’s native resolution at 60 Hz. After the picture is stable, raise the refresh rate, enable HDR or VRR, and test each change separately. This makes it clear which setting introduces a blank screen or instability.

Power, charging and the 80 W passthrough figure
The DG310 does not include a charger. ASUS recommends a USB-C PD charger rated at 100 W or higher to reach up to 80 W passthrough. The 100 W requirement refers to the charger’s output rating; the dock does not send 100 W to the handheld. Part of the power budget runs the dock and attached peripherals, while the published maximum available to the handheld is 80 W.
Connect the charger to the dock before connecting the host cable when you are following the Steam Deck workflow. On an Ally, connecting power before the host cable also makes it easier to confirm that the dock is negotiating power as soon as the handheld appears.
- Use a USB-C PD charger, not a basic USB phone charger that lacks the required PD profiles.
- Check that the charger’s 100 W rating is available from a single USB-C port if it has multiple outputs; some multi-port chargers reduce one port’s output when another device is connected.
- If the handheld reports slow charging or continues to discharge during a demanding game, disconnect unnecessary USB devices and verify the charger’s negotiated output.
- Do not treat an 80 W passthrough claim as a performance guarantee. The handheld’s firmware, battery state, thermal policy and game load can change charging behavior.
Troubleshoot a monitor that is not detected
No picture and no display detection
- Confirm that the monitor or TV is powered on and switched to the HDMI input used by the DG310.
- Unplug and firmly reseat the HDMI cable at both ends.
- Disconnect the DG310’s host cable from the handheld, wait a few seconds, and reconnect it fully.
- Check that the HDMI cable is capable of the mode you selected. For basic troubleshooting, set the display to a lower resolution and 60 Hz.
- Verify that the handheld’s USB-C port supports DisplayPort Alt Mode and USB Power Delivery. A USB-C connector by itself does not establish those capabilities.
- Test the dock with the display powered on and connected before attaching the host cable, especially with a Steam Deck.
If the external screen appears in the operating system but remains black, select the display in the system’s display settings and choose a conservative resolution and refresh rate. A mode outside the display’s supported range can look like a dock failure even though the connection is active.
The picture works but USB devices do not
Remove all USB accessories, reconnect the host cable, and then add devices one at a time. A single faulty cable or storage device can interfere with enumeration. If a device requires more power than a USB-A port can provide, move it to the port rated at 5 V/1.5 A or use its own powered supply. The three ports share the dock’s connection to the handheld, so several simultaneous transfers can also reduce available bandwidth.
Ethernet is missing
Check that the Ethernet cable clicks into the dock and the router or switch, then inspect the handheld’s network settings for a wired adapter. Reconnect the host cable after the dock is powered. If Wi-Fi remains active, temporarily disable it to confirm that traffic is using the wired connection.

Make sure the charger is plugged into the dock’s USB-C power input rather than a data-only port, and confirm that the charger supports USB PD. Try connecting the charger before the host cable. If charging is intermittent, remove high-draw peripherals, test with a 100 W-or-higher charger, and check for tension on the fixed host cable.

High refresh rate or HDR is unavailable
First confirm that the display’s HDMI input is configured for its enhanced or high-bandwidth mode. Replace an older HDMI cable with an HDMI 2.1-rated cable, then select the refresh rate in the handheld’s display settings. If the option still does not appear, the handheld or display may be the limiting component even though the dock supports the higher signal.
How to compare the DG310 with another dock
If you are deciding between the DG310 and a different handheld dock, compare the specifications that affect your actual setup rather than counting ports alone.
| Comparison point | Why it matters | DG310 information |
|---|---|---|
| Host compatibility | Determines whether video, data and charging work through one cable | Requires USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode and USB Power Delivery |
| Charging passthrough | Sets how much power can reach the handheld while gaming | Up to 80 W with a suitable charger; ASUS recommends 100 W or higher |
| Video output | Controls resolution, refresh rate and feature support | One HDMI 2.1 output; up to 4K/144 Hz or 8K/30 Hz, with HDR, VRR and ALLM listed |
| USB ports | Affects accessory count, speed and power availability | Three USB-A ports at 5 Gbps; two rated 0.9 A and one rated 1.5 A |
| Network | Useful for stable downloads, multiplayer and streaming | Gigabit Ethernet |
| Included charger | Changes the out-of-box cost and setup time | No charger included |
| Cable design | Determines fit and strain with a stand or protective case | Fixed 60 cm USB-C cable at a 90-degree exit angle |
| Display count | Important for desk setups with multiple monitors | One external HDMI display |
| Physical fit | Determines whether the dock and handheld sit securely together | 181.6 × 86.6 × 31.6 mm; approximately 262 ±10 g |
A dock with more connectors is not automatically better for an Ally or Deck. Confirm that its host port supports the required video standard, that its charger can meet your handheld’s power needs, and that its cable reaches your preferred playing position without strain.
Accessories worth adding
A 100 W-or-higher USB-C PD charger
This is the essential addition because the DG310 ships without a charger. Choose a model that explicitly supports USB-C Power Delivery and can supply 100 W from the port you will use. That specification gives the dock the input headroom ASUS recommends for up to 80 W passthrough.
An HDMI 2.1 cable
An HDMI 2.1-rated cable is sensible when your target is 4K at 120 or 144 Hz, 8K at 30 Hz, HDR or VRR. It is not required for every 1080p or 4K/60 setup, but it removes a common bandwidth limitation when troubleshooting a high-refresh display.
Powered USB accessories
Controllers, keyboards and mice normally use little power. Portable hard drives, capture devices and other high-draw hardware may work more reliably with their own power source, particularly when the handheld is also charging and the display is running at a high mode.
Safe shutdown and reconnect routine
Before moving the handheld, eject USB storage through the operating system and close applications that are actively using the external display or network. Disconnect the host cable only after transfers have stopped. For a recurring desk setup, leave the HDMI, Ethernet, peripherals and charger attached to the dock; with a Steam Deck, reconnect the dock to the Deck only after those accessories are already in place, following Valve’s recommended order.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If you change from a television to a monitor, reconnect the HDMI cable and select the new input before attaching the handheld. Start at a conservative display mode, then enable higher refresh rate, HDR or VRR once the basic connection is stable.
Bottom line: is the DG310 suitable for an Ally or Steam Deck?
The DG310 is suitable when the handheld’s USB-C port supports DisplayPort Alt Mode and USB Power Delivery. Its single host connection can provide display, peripherals, Ethernet and charging, while HDMI 2.1 gives it enough stated bandwidth for up to 4K/144 Hz or 8K/30 Hz. Plan for a separate 100 W-or-higher USB-C PD charger, remember that only one external display is supported, and treat the maximum video and charging figures as system-dependent limits rather than guarantees for every handheld, cable or monitor.
