For a good living-room picture, size the image to your wall and seating, then place the PK52 square to the screen and use its optical zoom before digital keystone correction. There is an important placement caveat: Optoma’s Australian specifications list a 1.21:1–1.59:1 throw ratio and a 1–8 m projection distance, while its Photon series page advertises a 100-inch picture from less than 25 cm. Those claims imply very different room layouts, so use the specifications for your market and the manual supplied with your unit before fixing a mount.
Choose an image size that fits the room
Optoma Australia lists the PK52 as a native 16:9 projector, with a diagonal image range of 28–300 inches. That range describes the product specification, not a recommended living-room size. Pick a size that fits the usable wall and works from your seats; the available specifications do not establish one ideal screen size or viewing distance for every room.

Measure the screen area before positioning the projector. For a 16:9 image, the picture is wider than it is tall: width is approximately 0.872 times the diagonal. For example, a 100-inch diagonal image is about 87 inches wide. Allow room for the full image and any screen border, and avoid letting furniture or wall features dictate a size that will not fit.
Estimate the projector position using throw ratio
Optoma Australia lists a 1.21:1–1.59:1 throw ratio and 1.3× manual zoom for the PK52. Throw ratio relates the distance from the lens to the screen to the width of the projected image. Optoma’s distance calculator specifies that the measurement starts at the front and center of the lens and ends at the projection surface; its result is an estimate, so confirm the image in the room before installing a mount.

Using the Australian throw-ratio range and a 16:9 image, these are approximate lens-to-screen distances. The calculations use image width, not diagonal, and are planning estimates rather than guaranteed mounting measurements.
| 16:9 image diagonal | Approximate image width | Estimated lens-to-screen distance |
|---|---|---|
| 80 in | 70 in | 2.15–2.82 m |
| 100 in | 87 in | 2.68–3.52 m |
| 120 in | 105 in | 3.22–4.23 m |
These estimates apply the listed 1.21–1.59 ratio to the approximate width of each 16:9 image. Actual placement can depend on the unit’s market-specific specifications and zoom setting. Start within the estimated range, use the manual zoom to refine the image size, and verify the final image before drilling or mounting.

Resolve the short-throw specification discrepancy first
Optoma’s Photon series page describes a 100-inch image from less than 25 cm and labels the lens ultra-short-throw. That conflicts materially with the Australian PK52 specifications: a 1.21:1–1.59:1 throw ratio and a listed 1–8 m projection distance imply a projector positioned much farther from the screen. Do not plan a near-wall installation solely from the series-page claim. Check the manual supplied for your country and exact unit; do not assume specifications for another Optoma model apply.
Align the image physically before correcting it digitally
- Place the projector facing the screen. Aim for a centered, level position so the lens points squarely at the screen rather than from an angle.
- Set the distance and image size. Use the throw estimate as a starting point, then adjust the 1.3× manual zoom to fit the screen area.
- Use keystone correction only if needed. Optoma Australia lists auto vertical keystone and ±30° correction. These are adjustment options, not a substitute for getting the projector’s physical placement right.
- Check the whole image before finalizing the installation. Confirm that the edges fit the screen and that the intended image size is achievable from the chosen position. The distance calculator itself advises checking the room before fixing mounting hardware.
If you plan to use a ceiling or other fixed mount, confirm its compatibility, load rating, mounting pattern and required clearance in the manual for your unit. The product specifications cited here do not establish mount compatibility.

Connect the source and choose an audio route
Optoma Australia lists two HDMI 2.0 inputs, with one supporting ARC out, plus a 3.5 mm audio output and a 12 V trigger. Connect a source such as a media player or game console over HDMI. If routing audio through a receiver or soundbar using ARC, use the designated HDMI connection and confirm that the audio equipment supports the required ARC connection.
These connection specifications do not establish that the projector has built-in streaming apps or support for any particular streaming service. Plan on an external source if you need streaming, and check its compatibility separately.

Adjust picture features with the correct manual
Optoma’s Photon page advertises HDR10+ and PureMotion; Optoma Australia lists HDR support and PureEngine. Those product descriptions do not establish the exact menu names, available controls on every regional unit, or a universally best numerical setting. Use the manual for your market to find the picture modes and HDR controls available on your projector, then compare them with the content and lighting in your room.
