Set up the Logitech MX Master 4 by switching it on, connecting its USB-C wireless receiver, and installing Logi Options+. In Options+, select each button and assign an action; you can also create app-specific assignments. Clicking the mouse’s Haptic Sense Panel opens Actions Ring, while a separate haptic-feedback setting controls the strength of supported tactile effects. Windows’ native Advanced Haptics is a separate, version-dependent capability that requires a compatible Windows 11 update and, if necessary, a firmware update.
What you need before starting
You need the MX Master 4, its USB-C wireless receiver, and a computer with an available USB port. Logitech’s current Logi Options+ download page lists Windows 10 or later and macOS 14 or later; installer requirements can change, so check the download page when you install rather than relying on an old installer.

1. Turn the mouse on
- Turn the mouse over.
- Move the power switch on the underside to the on position.
2. Insert the USB-C wireless receiver
- Plug the USB-C wireless receiver into an open USB port on the computer.
- Return the mouse to a working position and move it. The receiver should establish the connection without a separate pairing dialog.
3. Put the mouse into pairing mode if it does not connect
If the first connection does not complete, press and hold the Easy-Switch button on the back of the mouse for three seconds. The indicator should begin blinking, showing that the mouse is ready to pair. Keep the receiver connected while the indicator is blinking and allow the connection to complete.

Receiver setup versus Bluetooth
The Logitech quick-start material used for this guide documents receiver setup, not a complete Bluetooth-pairing sequence. If you choose Bluetooth instead, use the current Logitech instructions for your operating system rather than applying the receiver steps to a Bluetooth menu. The customization steps in Logi Options+ are the relevant part after the mouse is connected.
Install Logi Options+
Download the current installer
- Open Logitech’s current Logi Options+ download page.
- Choose the installer for Windows or macOS and confirm that your system meets the version shown on that page. Logitech lists Windows 10 or later and macOS 14 or later in the published software information.
- Run the installer and complete its prompts.
- Launch Logi Options+ with the receiver connected and the mouse switched on.
Do not assume that an older Options+ release has the same requirements or controls as the current one. Logitech can change supported operating-system versions and interface wording. If the app does not show the MX Master 4, first verify the hardware connection, then close and reopen Options+ after reseating the receiver.
Let Options+ identify the mouse
After the app opens, select the MX Master 4 when it appears in the device view. The available customization pages depend on the detected device and software version. Keep the mouse connected during any firmware prompt; a firmware update is particularly relevant when a feature that requires current device support, such as Windows native Advanced Haptics, does not activate.

Customize the mouse buttons
Logitech’s documented workflow is deliberately simple: choose a button, choose an action, and optionally make that assignment specific to an application. The exact screen labels can change between Options+ releases, so use the button and action controls shown for your installed version rather than looking for a fixed menu name.
Assign a global action
- Open the MX Master 4 in Logi Options+.
- Open the button-customization view.
- Select the button you want to change. Options+ identifies the button in the device view so you can work one control at a time.
- Choose an action from the list offered by the current version of Options+.
- Save or finish the assignment if the app presents a confirmation control, then use the button in an ordinary window to verify it.
A global assignment applies wherever the mouse is being used unless an application-specific assignment takes precedence. If the available action list differs from an online screenshot, follow the list in your installed release; Logitech does not guarantee that every release exposes identical labels or choices.
Create an application-specific assignment
- In the same button-customization view, choose the option for an application-specific or per-app configuration.
- Select the application profile you want to customize, or add it through the app’s profile control if it is not already listed.
- Select a mouse button and choose the action for that application.
- Switch to the application and test the button. Return to Options+ if the application is not using the profile you expected.
Application-specific customization lets one physical button behave differently in different programs. Reserve global assignments for actions you want everywhere, and use per-app profiles for commands that only make sense inside one program. This prevents a specialized shortcut from changing behavior unexpectedly in unrelated windows.

Choose assignments that remain understandable
- Start with one or two frequently repeated actions rather than remapping every button at once.
- Keep primary pointing and clicking controls familiar while you verify new assignments.
- Write down the new action for each changed button, especially when several application profiles are active.
- Test an assignment in the target application and then test the same button in another application to confirm whether it is global or profile-specific.
- If an action disappears after an Options+ update, select the replacement offered by the current action list instead of assuming the old label is still supported.
Use Actions Ring for on-screen shortcuts
Actions Ring is a customizable on-screen overlay for supported MX devices. On the MX Master 4, clicking the Haptic Sense Panel opens the ring. Logitech’s guide describes selecting a bubble in the ring; bubbles can contain tools, shortcuts and actions, including app-related actions.
Open and use the ring
- With the mouse connected, click the Haptic Sense Panel.
- When the Actions Ring overlay appears, move to the bubble for the tool, shortcut or action you want.
- Select the bubble. The assigned action runs, and the overlay closes or returns control according to the current Options+ behavior.
Customize the ring
- Open the MX Master 4 in Logi Options+ and locate the Actions Ring controls.
- Select a ring bubble to edit it.
- Choose the tool, shortcut or action offered by the current software version. App-related actions can be associated with the relevant application configuration.
- Repeat for the bubbles you use most, then click the Haptic Sense Panel and test each one.
The ring works best when its bubbles represent commands you use often enough to justify a dedicated shortcut but not so often that a normal button press is faster. Keep the set small while learning it; an overloaded overlay can take longer to scan than a conventional control.
What Logitech’s performance figures mean
| Reported result | Study qualification | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 33% time savings with Actions Ring shortcuts | Logitech Ergo Lab, 2025; 37 MX Master mouse users performing eight desktop actions. | This is a Logitech-reported study result, not a guaranteed personal improvement. Results vary with the shortcuts assigned. |
| Up to 63% fewer mouse movements | The same 2025 Logitech Ergo Lab study, with 37 users and eight desktop actions. | It describes the tested shortcut assignments; it does not predict the reduction for every application or workflow. |
Set haptic feedback independently
Haptic feedback is configured separately from the button assignments and the ring’s contents. Logitech describes haptics for Actions Ring, Smart Actions, gestures and supported plugins. The Haptic Feedback controls provide four intensity choices:

- Enhanced Connectivity: Includes a Logi Bolt USB-C receiver and new radio chip for 2x more powerful connectivity(1) with fully encrypted, FIPS-compliant connections for top-tier security
- High-quality, durable materials: This Logitech MX Master office mouse offers improved stain resistance(1) and is easier to clean, so you can keep it looking good for longer
- Tracks on any surface: Stop on a pixel every time with the 8K DPI Darkfield laser sensor; track with precision, even on glass(2) with this darkfield mouse
- MagSpeed scrolling: Glide through 1,000 lines per second or scroll line-by-line with pixel-perfect precision — experience effortless control with this advanced mouse
- Quiet, focused work: Quiet Click technology reduces click noise by 90%(3), creating one less distraction so you and your work neighbors can focus on work
| Setting | Relative strength | When it can help |
|---|---|---|
| Subtle | Lightest listed feedback | Use when you want confirmation without a pronounced vibration. |
| Low | Light feedback | A compromise when Subtle is easy to miss. |
| Medium | Moderate feedback | A clearer confirmation for regular Actions Ring or gesture use. |
| High | Strongest listed feedback | Useful when you need the most noticeable tactile signal. |
Change the intensity
- Open the MX Master 4 in Logi Options+.
- Open the haptic-feedback settings rather than the button-assignment page.
- Choose Subtle, Low, Medium or High.
- Use the feature that produces the feedback, such as Actions Ring, to judge the result.
Enable or disable supported haptic features
Logitech’s Haptic Feedback guide also allows supported features or plugins to be toggled. The available switches depend on the current Options+ release and the connected device. If a plugin or feature is not listed, do not treat its absence as a faulty mouse; it may not be supported in that software version.

Native Windows Advanced Haptics is not the same thing as the haptic effects controlled inside Logi Options+. Logitech says native Advanced Haptics require a compatible Windows 11 version with the update released from the end of March 2026 onward. Compatibility therefore depends on the exact Windows 11 build, not merely on the words “Windows 11” appearing in system information.

Check the prerequisites
- Use a compatible Windows 11 version that includes the required update from the end of March 2026 onward.
- Connect the MX Master 4 and open Logi Options+.
- Install the latest mouse firmware from the mouse’s device-settings page if Windows native haptics do not activate automatically.
If native haptics still do not appear
- Install all available Windows updates and restart the computer.
- Open Options+ and check the MX Master 4 device settings for a firmware update.
- Apply the firmware update while the receiver remains connected and the mouse is powered on.
- After the update, reopen the Windows haptic feature and test it again.
Options+ haptic feedback can still be configured independently. A Windows feature not appearing does not remove the mouse’s other customization controls, and enabling an Options+ intensity level does not prove that the operating system’s native capability is available.

A practical configuration sequence
For a predictable first setup, configure the mouse in this order:
- Connect the receiver and confirm pointer movement.
- Install the current Options+ release for your operating system.
- Assign one global button action and test it.
- Add an application-specific assignment only after the global behavior is clear.
- Configure a small Actions Ring set and test each bubble from the Haptic Sense Panel.
- Choose a haptic intensity, then decide whether supported feature or plugin toggles should remain enabled.
- On compatible Windows 11 systems, check native Advanced Haptics and update firmware from the Options+ device settings page if activation fails.
This sequence separates connection problems from configuration problems. If the pointer does not move, solve the receiver connection first. If the pointer works but a shortcut does not, inspect the button or application profile. If the shortcut works but there is no tactile confirmation, inspect haptic settings and, on Windows, the separate native-haptics prerequisites.
Troubleshoot common setup failures
The mouse does not connect
- Verify the underside power switch is on.
- Reseat the USB-C receiver.
- Hold Easy-Switch on the back for three seconds and wait for the indicator to blink.
- Try another USB port, then reopen Options+ after the pointer responds.
Options+ cannot find the mouse
- Confirm that the receiver is connected and the mouse is powered.
- Close and reopen Options+ after reconnecting the receiver.
- Check the installer’s current operating-system requirements; Logitech lists Windows 10 or later and macOS 14 or later in the published software information.
- If the pointer works but a new feature is missing, update Options+ before concluding that the hardware is unsupported.
A button works differently than expected
- Check whether the active application has its own profile.
- Review the selected button and action in Options+ and test the assignment again.
- Switch to another application to determine whether the behavior is global or app-specific.
Actions Ring does not open
- Click the Haptic Sense Panel rather than an ordinary mouse button.
- Confirm that the MX Master 4 is visible in Options+ and that the ring is configured.
- If the overlay opens but a bubble does nothing, edit that bubble and choose an available action from the current list.
There is no haptic feedback
- Open the separate haptic-feedback settings and choose one of the four intensity levels.
- Check whether the feature or plugin producing feedback is enabled.
- For Windows native Advanced Haptics, verify the compatible Windows 11 update and install mouse firmware from the Options+ device settings page if automatic activation failed.
Keep the configuration maintainable
Options+ configurations are easiest to maintain when each profile has a clear purpose. Use global assignments for controls that should remain consistent, reserve per-app profiles for genuinely application-specific work, and keep the Actions Ring focused on a small set of high-value shortcuts. After an Options+ or firmware update, test one global button, one application-specific button, an Actions Ring bubble and the selected haptic intensity. Those four checks quickly reveal whether an update changed a label, profile or supported feature.
