Use KEF Dialogue Mode only when speech is being masked, then compare it with Default or Movie mode at your normal listening volume.
This guide is written for the KEF XIO, a 5.1.2 Dolby Atmos soundbar with HDMI 2.1 eARC, Dialogue Mode and automatic adjustment for shelf, cabinet or wall orientation. Menu names vary by television, and the correct digital-output format depends on the exact TV, source and XIO workflow.

What the KEF XIO needs for Atmos
The XIO’s “5.1.2” designation describes its stated channel layout: five main channels, one low-frequency channel and two height channels. That layout can reproduce an Atmos mix, but the soundbar cannot create an Atmos presentation from every signal. The program must contain an Atmos soundtrack, and the signal must travel through a compatible source and HDMI/ARC/eARC path.

- Television: an HDMI input specifically labelled ARC or eARC.
- Source: a built-in TV app or external device offering Atmos content and an audio setting that can pass the format.
- Control: the KEF Connect App is useful for Dialogue Mode and other supported controls, although Dialogue Mode can also be selected with the remote.
- Placement: a position below the TV where the front, upward- or side-directed sound paths are not blocked.
Atmos is not demonstrated by a stereo title. Start testing with a movie, show or music track that is explicitly labelled Dolby Atmos. The Dolby badge is the practical indication that the content includes the format; the title’s availability can vary by service, plan and region.

Connect the XIO to the correct HDMI port
Use the TV’s ARC/eARC socket
Run one HDMI cable from the XIO’s HDMI eARC connection to the television’s HDMI port marked ARC or eARC. A regular HDMI input may carry video from a device, but it does not provide the television-return audio connection the soundbar needs. If the set has several HDMI inputs, look for the small ARC/eARC label beside the socket rather than choosing by position.
After connecting the cable, switch on the television’s HDMI-return and control features. Manufacturers use different names. The relevant controls may appear as ARC, eARC, HDMI-CEC, HDMI Control, Anynet+ or Simplink. The exact menu path differs by TV brand, so open the TV’s sound or system settings and enable the options associated with ARC/eARC and CEC.
Choose the digital-output format with care
There is an important distinction between a generic Atmos recommendation and the workflow documented for a particular XIO setup. Dolby’s general soundbar guidance says an Atmos-capable source should use an HDMI/ARC/eARC connection and bitstream output. The retrieved KEF manual instruction for its documented HDMI speaker workflow says to set the TV’s digital output to PCM.

Those statements should not be turned into one universal rule for every KEF product, television or source. Follow the XIO manual and the TV manual for the exact combination of output mode, eARC setting and source device you are using. If you change the output format, test the same known Atmos title again and check whether the source or equipment reports Atmos. Do not assume that a setting that works on another soundbar is automatically correct for the XIO.

Place the soundbar so Atmos reflections can work
Best shelf or TV-unit position
Put the XIO directly below the screen, as close to the front edge of the shelf or TV unit as practical. The front of the bar should not be recessed behind a lip. Keep the grille, drivers and the area immediately above the unit clear of books, décor, a centre speaker or the TV stand itself.
Atmos height effects depend on sound reaching the ceiling and reflecting toward the listening position. Dolby’s placement guidance is explicit: nothing should sit between Dolby Atmos-enabled speakers and the ceiling. A tall shelf, cabinet roof or object placed on top of the bar can therefore reduce the apparent height layer even when the TV reports an Atmos signal.

Wall mounting
A wall-mounted XIO can work well when it remains directly below the display and its acoustic paths are open. Keep enough vertical separation for the TV and soundbar not to obstruct one another, and route the HDMI cable without sharply pulling on the connector. A low-profile mount or shelf is an accessory option, but check that its dimensions and load rating suit the XIO and that the finished installation does not cover the drivers.

Use the XIO’s placement sensing, but still clear the room
KEF describes the XIO as automatically adjusting for shelf, cabinet or wall orientation. That sensing helps the bar account for its position; it does not make an obstructed installation equivalent to an open one. Keep hard objects from blocking the sound paths, and avoid placing the bar deep inside furniture. Walls, floors and ceilings with strong reflections can also change the apparent height and clarity.
Step-by-step first-time setup
- Identify the model. Confirm that the bar is the KEF XIO. This guide’s feature names and placement behaviour are based on that model. Install or open the KEF Connect App if you want app control; the remote can also operate Dialogue Mode.
- Switch off the TV and soundbar. Connecting with both devices off makes it easier for HDMI-CEC and eARC to renegotiate cleanly.
- Connect HDMI. Plug the cable into the XIO HDMI eARC port and the TV socket labelled ARC or eARC. Do not use an unlabelled HDMI input for the return-audio connection.
- Enable TV controls. In the TV settings, turn on ARC or eARC and HDMI-CEC/HDMI Control. If the menu uses a brand name such as Anynet+ or Simplink, enable that control as well.
- Set the TV’s output format according to the manuals. The XIO manual passage retrieved for its HDMI speaker workflow specifies PCM, while Dolby’s generic Atmos guidance refers to bitstream from an Atmos-capable source. Apply the setting documented for your exact XIO, TV and source combination rather than copying a setting from another system.
- Power up and select the TV input. Select the television’s internal speakers or audio-output option that sends sound through ARC/eARC, then select the XIO as the active audio device if the TV presents that choice.
- Place the bar. Set it directly below the display, close to the shelf edge or wall, with no object covering the drivers or the path to the ceiling. Keep the main seating position in front of the bar rather than far off-axis.
- Choose a known Atmos title. Open a movie, show or music track carrying the Dolby Atmos badge. A stereo programme cannot prove that the XIO’s height channels are receiving Atmos.
- Check the reported format. Where the TV, app, source player or soundbar exposes an audio-status screen, confirm that it reports Dolby Atmos. Some equipment does not show a persistent status, so use the title badge and the known signal path together.
- Set a normal listening level. Listen from the usual seat before changing modes. Extreme volume can make both dialogue and effects seem clearer or harsher than they are at everyday levels.
- Adjust speech only if needed. Select Dialogue Mode with the remote or in the KEF Connect App when voices are masked. Then compare it with Default or Movie mode using the same scene.
How to verify that Dolby Atmos is actually working
Check the content first
Look for the Dolby Atmos badge on the title or track. The badge is more useful than a dramatic helicopter or rain scene: an ordinary stereo mix can contain sounds that seem spacious but does not carry an Atmos object-based soundtrack.

Check the signal path
Confirm that the source device is connected through HDMI and that the TV-to-soundbar link uses ARC or eARC. If an external player is connected to the TV, its audio must be able to pass through the TV’s ARC/eARC implementation. If the player is connected directly to the soundbar, follow that device’s Atmos and output instructions together with the XIO manual.
Check an on-screen or device status indicator
Some TVs, streaming players and soundbars identify the incoming format; others show only a generic “surround” or “external speaker” state. When an Atmos indicator is available, it is the clearest confirmation. When it is not, use all three checks: a title marked Atmos, a compatible HDMI/ARC/eARC path and the correct output setting for the equipment.
Listen for height without treating it as a laboratory test
Height effects should sound integrated above and around the screen rather than as a separate speaker. Your ceiling height, material, room shape, seating position and furniture all affect the reflection. A weak height impression does not by itself prove that Atmos is absent; first inspect the placement and signal checks.

Make dialogue easier to understand
What Dialogue Mode changes
KEF describes Dialogue Mode as enhancing vocal frequencies while minimising background noise. Select it from the KEF Connect App or the remote when speech is being covered by music, effects or a busy mix. It is a speech-focused adjustment, not a replacement for a valid HDMI signal or a properly placed soundbar.
Compare modes at ordinary volume
Play a scene with several speakers and switch between Dialogue Mode and Default or Movie mode. Keep the volume, seating position and scene the same. Judge whether consonants are easier to follow, whether voices still sound natural, whether music remains balanced and whether effects become tiring.

There is no single best mode for every room or mix. Keep Dialogue Mode enabled if it consistently improves comprehension without making the soundtrack unpleasant; otherwise use Default or Movie and adjust the listening level modestly.
Troubleshoot the problems people encounter most
The TV shows no sound through the XIO
- Verify that the cable is in the TV’s ARC/eARC socket and the XIO’s HDMI eARC port.
- Confirm that ARC/eARC and HDMI-CEC are enabled in the TV menus. Look for alternate names such as Anynet+ or Simplink.
- Recheck the TV’s audio-output selection and apply the digital-output setting specified by the XIO and TV manuals.
- Power-cycle both devices after changing HDMI control settings so the connection can renegotiate.
Atmos does not appear
- Make sure the title itself carries the Dolby Atmos badge; stereo content cannot trigger the full presentation.
- Check that the source, TV and HDMI/ARC/eARC path all support Atmos and that the source is allowed to pass the format.
- Review the exact PCM or bitstream instruction for your XIO, TV and source combination. Do not apply a generic setting without checking the model-specific workflow.
- Use the source or TV’s audio-status display when available. If no status is exposed, verify the content badge and connection instead of relying on a listening impression alone.
Dialogue is still hard to hear
- Listen from the normal seating position, not immediately beside the bar.
- Enable Dialogue Mode with the remote or KEF Connect App and compare it directly with Default or Movie.
- Move the soundbar to the front edge of the shelf or out from a cabinet so the front drivers are not blocked.
- Check whether a hard shelf, cabinet roof or object above the bar is interfering with the intended sound path.
The height effect sounds weak or uneven
- Remove objects between the soundbar and ceiling.
- Do not place the XIO deep inside a cabinet or behind a raised shelf lip.
- Keep the bar centred under the TV and sit within the intended listening area.
- Consider room reflections: ceiling height, hard surfaces and furniture can change the apparent height even when the incoming format is correct.
Practical setup decisions
When a shelf is the better choice
Choose a shelf or TV unit when it can hold the XIO at the correct height, leave the front edge exposed and keep the ceiling path open. It avoids drilling and usually makes HDMI access easy. Reject a shelf position if the bar must sit in a deep recess or under a solid cabinet top.
When wall mounting is the better choice
Wall mounting is useful when the TV is already on the wall and the furniture would obstruct the soundbar. Mount the XIO immediately below the screen, maintain a clear path for its drivers and plan cable routing before fixing the bracket. Confirm that the final height keeps the display comfortable to view.
How to choose between dialogue profiles
Use Dialogue Mode for programmes in which speech is repeatedly masked, especially at ordinary listening volume. Choose Default or Movie when the enhanced vocal range makes music or effects sound unnatural. Make the decision with a representative scene rather than a brief test tone.
