If your iPhone has an Action button, you can configure it in Settings > Action Button to trigger Silent Mode, a Focus, the camera, a shortcut, accessibility features, and other built-in actions. Press and hold the button after choosing an assignment. The control is not on every iPhone: Apple identifies supported models as iPhone 15 Pro or later, with availability and options also varying by device, software, region, and language.
First, check whether your iPhone has an Action button
The Action button replaces the traditional Ring/Silent switch on supported models. Apple’s shortcut instructions describe eligibility as “iPhone 15 Pro or later.” That wording is important: do not assume that every iPhone with a similar generation number has identical controls. Check your exact model and software, then look for the Action Button entry in Settings.

- Open Settings.
- Look for Action Button in the settings list.
- If the entry is missing, your model may not support the button, or the available controls may differ from the model and software Apple supports.
The button is a physical control on the side of the phone. If your iPhone still has a Ring/Silent switch, that switch—not the Action button setup described here—is the control you have.
Configure the Action button
Apple puts all assignments on one screen. The basic process is the same whether you want a built-in function or a shortcut.

- Open Settings and tap Action Button. The screen displays the available assignments.
- Swipe left or right through the choices until the action you want is selected.
- If the selected action presents another menu, tap that menu and choose the specific option you want.
- For Controls, Shortcut, or Accessibility, tap the button shown below the action and select a specific option. Apple warns that the Action button does nothing for these categories until an option is chosen.
- Close Settings. Press and hold the Action button to invoke the assignment.
The Action button is designed around a press-and-hold gesture rather than a brief tap. Holding it again can reverse a toggle such as Silent Mode.
What you can assign
Apple’s current Action button guide lists the following choices. Some may not appear on every device because availability can depend on software, hardware, region, or language.
| Assignment | What to know before choosing it |
|---|---|
| Silent Mode | Switches between Silent and Ring for calls and alerts. Holding the button again changes the state back. |
| Focus | Turns on a Focus so notifications can be silenced and distractions filtered according to that Focus’s settings. |
| Camera | Uses the Action button as a direct camera action. Select it when quick camera access matters more than sound or notification control. |
| Visual Intelligence | Requires Apple Intelligence. It is not a universal option on every supported Action button device. |
| Flashlight | Assigns the button to the built-in flashlight control. |
| Voice Memo | Assigns the button to the Voice Memos action for quickly working with recordings. |
| Recognize Music | Uses the built-in music-recognition action. |
| Translate | Assigns the translation action; language availability can vary. |
| Magnifier | Uses the accessibility-oriented magnification tool. |
| Controls | Requires you to choose a specific control in the option below the main assignment. |
| Shortcut | Requires you to choose a particular shortcut. Selecting only the category leaves the button without an action. |
| Accessibility | Requires you to select a specific accessibility feature in the option below the category. |
| No Action | Disables the assigned function while leaving the physical button in place. |
Set up a shortcut
A shortcut is useful when the built-in list does not match a task you repeat. The Action button runs a shortcut that already exists in the Shortcuts app; it does not automatically create one for you.
- Open Settings > Action Button.
- Swipe to Shortcut.
- Tap Choose a Shortcut.
- Select the shortcut you want to run.
- Press and hold the Action button to test it.
If Choose a Shortcut is not completed, the button has no shortcut to run. This is the most common setup mistake: selecting the Shortcut category but not selecting an individual shortcut. Return to the same screen and choose one.
Choosing a shortcut that works well with a press-and-hold
Use a shortcut whose result is clear and useful when launched from anywhere. A shortcut that starts a routine, opens a frequently used task, or presents a deliberate menu can fit the button well. Avoid assigning a routine that changes important settings or sends something immediately unless you are comfortable with the possibility of activating it while taking the phone out of a pocket or case.
The Action button does not turn a shortcut into a background service. It starts the shortcut when you hold the button, and the shortcut then follows its own actions, permissions, and prompts.
Check the shortcut before assigning it
Open the Shortcuts app and make sure the intended shortcut is present and named clearly before you select it. If several shortcuts have similar names, read the complete list carefully so you attach the correct one. A shortcut may ask for permission or show a prompt the first time it runs; that behavior belongs to the shortcut itself and is not changed by assigning it to the Action button.

The button can be used from many screens, so the shortcut should make sense without requiring you to navigate to a particular app first.
Silent Mode: what it changes and what it does not
When you assign Silent Mode, holding the Action button switches between Silent and Ring. Apple describes the result this way: “When Silent mode is on, iPhone doesn’t ring or play alerts or other sound effects (but iPhone may still vibrate).”
Silent Mode is therefore a control for calls, alerts, and many interface sounds—not a promise that every audio source will be muted. The following can still produce sound:

- Clock alarms.
- Audio playing in apps such as Music.
- Many games.
- In some countries or regions, sounds from the camera, Voice Memos, or Emergency Alerts.
Those exceptions are why Silent Mode should not be treated as a guaranteed privacy or quiet setting. Check the particular app, alert type, and local rules when absolute silence matters.
Vibration is another separate consideration. Even when ringing and alert sound effects are suppressed, the phone may still vibrate. If you need fewer physical interruptions, review the vibration behavior separately rather than assuming Silent Mode changes every haptic response.
Silent Mode and Focus are different assignments
Both choices can reduce interruptions, but they solve different problems.
| Choose | Primary purpose | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Silent Mode | Control ringing and alert sounds | Calls and alerts generally do not ring or play alert sound effects; vibration and the documented exceptions can remain. |
| Focus | Control notifications and distractions | Turns on a Focus and applies that Focus’s notification-filtering behavior. It is not simply another name for the Ring/Silent control. |
Assign Silent Mode when you mainly need a fast sound-state toggle. Assign Focus when you want notification filtering and distraction controls. You can change the assignment later if your needs change.
These assignments can have different practical outcomes in the same situation. Silent Mode can stop a call from ringing while leaving notification delivery rules unchanged. A Focus can filter notifications according to its configuration, but it is not a guarantee that media, alarms, or every other sound source will stop. Pick the control that matches the interruption you are trying to manage.
How to choose the right action
For meetings, classes, or quiet spaces
Silent Mode is the direct choice when the immediate goal is to stop ringing and alert sounds. Remember that alarms, media, games, and some region-specific sounds can remain audible.
For scheduled concentration
Choose Focus when the problem is incoming notifications rather than only the ringtone. The Action button turns on the selected Focus; the Focus itself determines how notifications are filtered.
For frequent camera use
Choose Camera if reaching the camera quickly is more valuable than having a dedicated sound or notification toggle. Test the hold gesture with your case fitted so you know the button can be reached reliably.
For accessibility needs
Choose Accessibility, then select the specific feature in the option below it. Selecting the category without selecting the feature leaves the Action button inactive.

For a control not listed as a top-level action
Choose Controls, then select the individual control offered beneath it. As with Shortcuts and Accessibility, the category alone is not enough.
When you want the button out of the way
Select No Action if you do not want a press-and-hold to launch anything. This leaves the physical button in place but removes its assigned function, which can be preferable if you repeatedly trigger it by accident.
Test the assignment before relying on it
- Hold the Action button until the assigned action starts.
- Confirm the visible result. For Silent Mode, check whether the phone shows the expected Ring or Silent state; for a shortcut, confirm that the intended shortcut opens or runs.
- If the action is a toggle, hold the button again and verify that it changes back.
- Test it from the lock screen or another context in which you expect to use it, while taking care not to trigger an irreversible shortcut accidentally.
A test is especially important for Controls, Shortcut, and Accessibility because the assignment can appear selected while the required specific option is still missing.

Testing also reveals whether your case makes the button difficult to hold and whether the selected action behaves as expected outside Settings. Run the test with the phone configured as you normally carry it, and repeat it after changing the assignment or the shortcut’s permissions.
Troubleshooting common problems
There is no Action Button setting
Confirm the model first. Apple’s supported-model wording starts with iPhone 15 Pro or later, and the Action button replaces the Ring/Silent switch. If your phone has the switch, it does not use this setup screen. If you believe the model should qualify, check the installed software and the exact model designation rather than relying only on the phone’s release year.
The button does nothing
Return to Settings > Action Button. If the assignment is Controls, Shortcut, or Accessibility, make sure you tapped the option below the category and selected a specific item. Apple explicitly notes that the button does nothing without that second selection.
The shortcut category is selected but no shortcut runs
Open the Action Button settings, choose Shortcut, tap Choose a Shortcut, and select the shortcut again. Then hold the button to retest. If the shortcut itself requires permission or presents a prompt, complete that prompt in the normal Shortcuts workflow.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSilent Mode still allows sound
Check whether the sound is an alarm, media playback, a game, or a camera, Voice Memos, or Emergency Alert sound affected by local rules. Silent Mode is not a universal mute, and vibration may continue. If the problem is unwanted notifications, consider assigning a Focus instead.
The action is unavailable
Some choices depend on software, device capabilities, region, or language. Visual Intelligence, for example, requires Apple Intelligence. If an option is not shown, use the choices presented on your device rather than assuming a missing option is an error.
The wrong shortcut runs
Go back to Settings > Action Button > Shortcut > Choose a Shortcut and select the intended item again. Similar names can make it easy to choose the wrong entry. Run the shortcut directly in the Shortcuts app to verify its behavior, then hold the Action button once more.

The action works in Settings but not as expected elsewhere
Check the action’s own requirements. A shortcut can display prompts or request permissions, and availability for built-in actions can vary by device, software, region, or language. The Action button only launches the selected action; it does not bypass those requirements.

The Action button is convenient because it is physical and quick, but that also makes the assignment worth considering carefully. A sound toggle is easy to reverse. A shortcut that changes settings, starts a workflow, or performs an immediate action may be less forgiving if activated unintentionally.
- Prefer a reversible action when you often carry the phone in a pocket or tight case.
- After changing an assignment, test the hold gesture with the case installed.
- Review any shortcut’s steps and permissions before putting it on the button.
- Use No Action if you do not want the physical button to trigger a function.
Remember that the gesture is a hold, not a quick tap, but a tight case or a pocket can still make an unintended hold possible. If the phone is shared or handled by someone else, a shortcut that changes settings or launches an immediate task deserves extra caution.
Change or remove the assignment
You can reconfigure the button whenever your priorities change. Open Settings > Action Button, swipe to a different assignment, and complete any required secondary selection. To stop using the button for a task, choose No Action. Switching away from Shortcut, Controls, or Accessibility removes that category’s assignment from the button; it does not delete the underlying shortcut or feature.
Changing the assignment is separate from changing the underlying feature. For example, moving from a shortcut to Silent Mode does not erase the shortcut from Shortcuts, and moving away from an Accessibility feature does not remove that feature from the iPhone. You can return to the same settings screen and select the previous category again later.

Frequently asked questions
Does every iPhone have an Action button?
No. Apple describes the feature on supported models, including iPhone 15 Pro or later. Models that retain the Ring/Silent switch use that switch instead. Check for Settings > Action Button on your exact device.
How do I make the Action button run a shortcut?
Open Settings > Action Button, swipe to Shortcut, tap Choose a Shortcut, and select an existing shortcut. Then press and hold the button.
Why does my Action button do nothing after I choose Shortcut?
Selecting the Shortcut category is not enough. You must tap Choose a Shortcut and select an individual shortcut. Apple gives the same requirement for Controls and Accessibility: a specific option must be selected.
Can the Action button switch Silent Mode back on?
Yes. When Silent Mode is assigned, press and hold the button to switch between Silent and Ring. Hold it again to change back.
Does Silent Mode mute alarms?
No. Clock alarms can still sound. Audio in Music, many games, and certain camera, Voice Memos, or Emergency Alert sounds may also remain audible, depending on the country or region. The phone may still vibrate.
