For 4K at 120Hz on a Hisense UR8, connect the console directly to the television’s HDMI socket marked 4K 120Hz/144Hz, Ultra High Speed, or an equivalent high-refresh label. Use the console’s supplied cable (if undamaged) or a certified Premium High Speed/Ultra High Speed HDMI cable, then select Game picture mode, set the HDMI input to its enhanced or high-speed format, and turn on VRR. Finish by selecting 4K and 120Hz in the console’s own video settings.

UR8 naming, port numbers, menu labels and supported features vary by size and region, so use the labels beside the sockets and the manual for your exact model. The procedure below covers the common UR8 setup for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.

What you need before connecting the console

Have the following ready:

  • A Hisense UR8 television and its remote control.
  • A PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X.
  • The cable supplied with the console, in good condition, or a certified cable in the category required for 4K 120Hz.
  • Direct access to the television’s high-refresh HDMI input. If a soundbar or AV receiver is currently connected between the console and TV, temporarily remove it while you establish the signal.

The UR8 family is built for modern-console features, but not every regional variant exposes them in exactly the same way. A port may be numbered differently, and a menu may say Enhanced, High speed, HDMI 2.1 or something similar. The wording matters less than the label printed on the set and the option that enables the port’s full bandwidth.

Choose the correct HDMI port and cable

Find the 4K 120Hz input

Inspect the labels next to every HDMI socket. Connect the console to the input identified as 4K 120Hz/144Hz, Ultra High Speed, or an equivalent high-refresh designation. Hisense notes that the physical position and wording differ by model, screen size and region, so do not assume that HDMI 1 or the side-mounted socket is the high-refresh port.

If the television has several inputs marked for high refresh, any of those identified ports can be used. Write down the socket number; you will need to select that input after powering on the console.

Use an appropriate cable

The cable included with a PS5 or Xbox Series X is the simplest choice when its connectors and jacket are undamaged. If it is missing or damaged, choose a cable sold as Premium High Speed HDMI or Ultra High Speed HDMI. Hisense recommends those categories for devices operating at 4K 120Hz or 144Hz. Xbox separately recommends the HDMI 2.1 cable supplied with Series X or a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable for 4K and HDR connections.

A cable can still pass a picture while failing at 4K/120Hz. That is why a console may appear to work at 4K/60Hz but lose 120Hz, HDR or VRR when you select the higher mode. Replace the cable before changing several unrelated settings if the signal repeatedly drops out.

Configure the UR8 television

Perform these steps with the console connected to the selected high-refresh input and switched on.

  1. Select the console input. Press the input or source button, then choose the HDMI socket carrying the PS5 or Xbox signal.
  2. Open picture settings for that input. Settings are normally stored per input, so changing the mode on a different HDMI socket will not change the console socket.
  3. Choose Game picture mode. Hisense describes Game Mode as a latency-focused preset that improves responsiveness and processes YUV 4:4:4 signals precisely.
  4. Enable automatic game-device detection, when offered. In the U8R/UR8 guidance, the sequence is Game Mode, automatic game-device setting On, VRR On, then the HDMI mode set to the high-speed signal option. Your regional software may use slightly different wording.
  5. Set HDMI Format to Enhanced, High speed or the equivalent full-bandwidth option. A Standard or Compatibility option can limit the modes the console reports as available.
  6. Turn on VRR. Enable the television’s variable-refresh option before testing the console. VRR matches changing console frame rates to the panel refresh cycle, reducing tearing and judder.
  7. Leave the TV on the console input and restart the console if necessary. Some displays and consoles renegotiate resolution, HDR and refresh-rate capabilities only after the HDMI connection is re-established.

VRR can alter local-dimming controls on some Hisense models. If a dark scene looks different after VRR is enabled, that can be a behavior of the TV’s processing rather than a failed connection. The exact local-dimming choices depend on the UR8 variant and firmware.

Set up a PlayStation 5

With the PS5 on the UR8’s high-refresh input, open the console’s video output menu. Exact labels can change with PlayStation system software, but the relevant controls are in Settings → Screen and Video.

  1. Open Resolution and choose Automatic or 4K, according to the choices shown by the console.
  2. Open 120 Hz Output and set it to Automatic.
  3. Open VRR and enable it when supported.
  4. Leave HDR on the console’s automatic or supported setting so the PS5 can use HDR when a game and display mode permit it.
  5. Return to the video-output information screen and confirm that the television is detected as a 4K display and that 120Hz and VRR are available. If 120Hz is absent, stop here and troubleshoot the HDMI path before changing game-specific settings.

Not every game renders at 120 frames per second. The 120Hz setting allows compatible games and display modes to use the faster refresh; it does not force every title to produce 120 frames per second.

Set up an Xbox Series X

On Xbox, open Settings → General → TV & display options. The console’s software may rename or rearrange individual entries, but the checks remain the same.

  1. Set Resolution to 4K UHD.
  2. Set Refresh rate to 120 Hz.
  3. Open 4K TV details. This diagnostic page lists the capabilities the Xbox has detected from the complete HDMI chain.
  4. Confirm that 4K UHD, 120Hz, HDR and variable-refresh features are marked as supported where applicable.
  5. Enable VRR in the TV and console settings if the details screen reports it. Compatible Xbox games can then vary their frame rate without the tearing that occurs when a fixed refresh rate and frame output fall out of step.

Xbox Series X includes an HDMI 2.1 cable. Use it unless it is damaged; if you replace it, use a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable rather than an unlabelled cable that merely claims to support 8K or gaming.

Confirm the signal before launching a game

Use the console’s information screen and the TV’s on-screen signal information, if available, to verify each feature separately. A picture that looks sharp is not proof that all options are active.

Capability What to verify If it is missing
Resolution 4K or 3840×2160 is shown on the console. Check the HDMI input’s enhanced/high-speed format and the console resolution setting.
Refresh rate 120Hz is listed on the PS5 video-output screen or Xbox 4K TV details page. Recheck the labelled 4K 120Hz/144Hz port, cable and HDMI format.
HDR The console reports HDR support and a compatible game enables it. Confirm the high-speed HDMI mode, then test with the console connected directly to the TV.
VRR VRR or variable refresh is shown as supported and enabled. Turn on VRR at both ends and check whether an intermediate receiver is filtering the feature.
ALLM/Game Mode The TV switches to Game mode automatically or remains in Game mode for the console input. Select Game mode manually and enable automatic game-device detection if available.

Run this check with the console at the home screen as well as inside a game. A title can have its own performance, resolution or HDR options, while the console’s compatibility screen describes what the HDMI connection itself can carry.

What the UR8 supports for each console

Independent testing of the UR8SG reported PlayStation 5 support for 1440p/120Hz, 4K/120Hz and HDMI Forum VRR. The same testing reported Xbox Series X|S support for 1440p/120Hz, 4K/120Hz, HDMI Forum VRR, Dolby Vision and FreeSync Premium Pro. These results describe the tested UR8SG configuration, not a guarantee that every UR8 size or regional firmware exposes identical options.

Testing of a UR8 by TechRadar described four HDMI 2.1 ports, console 4K/120Hz support, VRR, ALLM, Dolby Vision and HDR10+ gaming. Port counts and labels can differ on your television, so verify the sockets on the set rather than relying on that tested configuration.

Understanding the main gaming features

  • 4K/120Hz: The television can accept a 4K signal refreshed 120 times per second when the console, game and HDMI path all support it.
  • VRR: The panel refresh follows changing frame delivery from the console, reducing visible tearing and judder. Hisense cautions that enabling VRR can affect local-dimming controls on some models.
  • ALLM: Automatic Low Latency Mode allows a compatible console to request a low-processing game preset. If automatic switching does not occur, select Game mode manually.
  • HDR: High Dynamic Range is negotiated separately from resolution and refresh rate. A 4K/120Hz picture can appear without HDR when the cable, HDMI mode or intermediate device does not pass the HDR data.
  • Dolby Vision and HDR10+ gaming: These formats were identified in testing or model documentation for particular UR8 configurations. Their availability depends on the exact UR8 variant, console output and game.

Input lag and Game Mode expectations

Game Mode is intended to reduce processing delay, but measured performance is not identical across sizes, firmware and test conditions. TechRadar measured 11.7ms at 4K/60Hz on its UR8 after the relevant game settings were enabled, compared with 20ms before those changes. Those are review measurements from 2026, not a guaranteed value for every UR8.

Condition Reported measurement How to interpret it
Game settings enabled, 4K/60Hz 11.7ms, TechRadar measurement, 2026 Shows the benefit of the low-latency configuration in that tested set.
Before the relevant game-setting changes 20ms, TechRadar measurement, 2026 Illustrates why Game mode and related options should be enabled before judging responsiveness.

Do not disable HDR or VRR solely to chase a review number. First establish a stable 4K/120Hz signal in Game mode; then adjust image-processing controls only if you have a specific preference or a game-related problem.

Troubleshoot 4K without 120Hz

The TV shows 4K but only 60Hz

  1. Move the console to the HDMI socket labelled 4K 120Hz/144Hz or Ultra High Speed.
  2. Replace the cable with the console-supplied cable or a certified Premium High Speed/Ultra High Speed cable.
  3. Open the console input’s HDMI settings and select Enhanced, High speed or the equivalent option.
  4. Confirm Game mode and automatic game-device detection are enabled.
  5. On PS5, set 120 Hz Output to Automatic. On Xbox, set Refresh rate to 120 Hz and inspect 4K TV details.
  6. Power-cycle the TV and console after changing the HDMI mode so they renegotiate capabilities.

If the result remains 4K/60Hz, test a different labelled high-refresh input if your model has one. A port limitation or a regional hardware difference may be involved.

120Hz disappears when HDR is enabled

Check the cable first, then the TV’s HDMI format. A cable or intermediate device can carry 4K/60Hz but fail when 120Hz and HDR are negotiated together. Connect the console directly to the TV and compare the console’s capability screen. If direct connection restores HDR, the receiver or soundbar is the limiting link.

VRR is unavailable or causes flicker

  1. Enable VRR in the UR8’s game or input settings and in the console.
  2. Confirm that the console is on the high-refresh HDMI input and that the HDMI format is Enhanced or High speed.
  3. Remove any AV receiver, switch or soundbar from the video path and test console-to-TV directly.
  4. Check the TV’s local-dimming behavior. Hisense notes that VRR can change local-dimming controls on some models, so a change in dark-scene contrast does not by itself prove that VRR is failing.

The screen goes black or loses signal

  • Reseat both HDMI connectors and inspect for bent contacts or a loose fit.
  • Use the shortest practical certified cable and avoid routing it through an unverified switch or receiver while testing.
  • Return the console temporarily to 4K/60Hz. If that is stable but 4K/120Hz is not, the problem is usually the cable, port mode or passthrough bandwidth rather than the panel.
  • Restart both devices after changing resolution, HDR or refresh settings.

The console reports no HDR, VRR or 4K support

Open the Xbox 4K TV details page or the PS5 Screen and Video information screen. If several capabilities are missing at once, the TV may be on the wrong HDMI input or Standard HDMI mode. If only one feature is missing, verify that feature at both ends and test without an intermediate device.

Direct connection versus receiver passthrough

A direct console-to-TV connection is the best diagnostic and the least ambiguous setup. It allows the UR8 and console to negotiate 4K/120Hz, HDR and VRR without a receiver or soundbar imposing its own limits.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Connection choice Advantages Trade-offs and checks
Console directly to UR8 Clearest 4K/120Hz, VRR and HDR negotiation; easiest troubleshooting. Audio may need to return through the TV or use a separate audio connection.
Console through an AV receiver or soundbar Centralizes switching and can simplify surround-audio wiring. Every device and cable in the chain must pass the desired 4K/120Hz, VRR and HDR formats. A failure anywhere can remove a capability.

Use direct connection first even if you ultimately prefer receiver passthrough. Once the TV and console work directly, reconnect the receiver and test the Xbox 4K TV details or PS5 video-output screen again. If a feature disappears, the passthrough device or its cable needs investigation.

Model and regional differences to account for

“UR8” covers multiple regional variants and screen sizes. HDMI port count, port numbering, supported refresh rates, menu names, HDMI format choices and local-dimming behavior can differ. Hisense documentation qualifies these details by model and region.

  • Read the complete model code from the television’s label or system-information page.
  • Use the labels printed beside the sockets instead of assuming that the first HDMI input is the fastest.
  • Follow the manual for that exact model when a setting name differs from the wording used here.
  • Treat third-party measurements as evidence from a specific tested television, not as a specification for every UR8.

Console menu text can also change with system software. Look for the function—4K resolution, 120Hz output, VRR and HDR—even when the wording is not identical to the paths listed above.

A reliable final checklist

  • The console is connected directly to the UR8’s socket labelled 4K 120Hz/144Hz, Ultra High Speed or equivalent.
  • The cable is the one supplied with the console or a certified Premium High Speed/Ultra High Speed replacement.
  • The correct HDMI input is selected on the TV.
  • Game picture mode is active for that input.
  • Automatic game-device detection is enabled when available.
  • HDMI Format is set to Enhanced, High speed or the equivalent full-bandwidth setting.
  • VRR is enabled on the TV and console when supported.
  • PS5 shows 4K with 120Hz Output set to Automatic, or Xbox shows 4K UHD, 120Hz and the expected capabilities in 4K TV details.
  • HDR is tested with a compatible game after the basic 4K/120Hz link is stable.
  • Any receiver or soundbar is tested separately rather than assumed to pass every gaming feature.
