How to Set Up the Galaxy Z Flip7 Cover Screen for Everyday Use

The Galaxy Z Flip7’s outer display, called the FlexWindow, is most useful when it shows only the information and controls you actually check. Set it up with two or three glanceable widgets such as Calendar, Weather, or Battery, learn the swipe gestures for widgets and notifications, then personalize the wallpaper, clock, shortcuts, and optional Now Brief, Now Bar, or Gemini features. You do not need a special accessory, paid app, or subscription to complete the basic setup.

What the Galaxy Z Flip7 cover screen can do

The FlexWindow works while the phone is closed. You can wake it, move through selected widgets, read notifications, open quick settings, and launch supported actions without unfolding the device. Samsung’s setup instructions support two editing routes: an editor opened directly from the closed FlexWindow and a Settings menu that is easier to find when you already have the phone open.

Start with a small set. Two or three widgets are usually easier to scan than a long list, especially when you are checking the display for a quick answer rather than opening the full phone. Calendar, Weather, and Battery are practical starting points. Remove anything you rarely consult; this focused list is a usability recommendation, not a Samsung limit.

Setup choice When to use it Path
Closed-screen editor You are already holding the phone closed and want to change the list from the FlexWindow Double-tap the FlexWindow, swipe left to widgets, touch and hold, tap Edit, then open the phone when prompted
Settings editor You want a conventional menu or the closed-screen editor does not appear Settings > Cover Screen > Widgets
Daily use You want to view a selected widget or notification Wake the display, then swipe left for widgets or right for notifications

The two editor routes change the same basic widget selection, so choose the one that is easiest at the moment. The closed route is convenient for a quick adjustment while the phone is already in your hand. Settings is clearer when you are doing a full first-day setup, comparing several options, or troubleshooting a missing Edit command. Neither route requires unfolding the phone every time you want to view a widget.

Menu wording can differ by country, carrier, software version, or device variant. The steps below follow Samsung’s US and UK instructions for the Galaxy Z Flip7; if a label is slightly different, look for the equivalent Cover Screen, Widgets, Lock screen and AOD, or Galaxy AI section.

What you need before setup

  • A Galaxy Z Flip7 with the phone closed: the gesture instructions apply to the FlexWindow on the outside, not the main interior display.
  • A supported software build: only widgets and optional features exposed by your current software and region can be selected.
  • A few minutes to test the gestures: double-tap the display rather than the hinge or surrounding frame, and make sure you can distinguish left, right, and downward swipes.

You do not need to buy a case, screen protector, repair item, streaming service, or separate widget app to perform this setup. A protector or case may be a personal choice, but it is not a requirement in Samsung’s setup directions. Optional AI functions can have their own permissions and service terms, discussed below.

How to add and arrange widgets

Use the closed FlexWindow editor

  1. Close the Galaxy Z Flip7.
  2. Double-tap the FlexWindow to wake it.
  3. Swipe left until the widget pages appear.
  4. Touch and hold the cover screen, then tap Edit.
  5. Open the phone when prompted. The editor shows supported widgets at the bottom and selected widgets at the top.
  6. Tap a widget at the bottom to add it. Choose a display style when the editor offers styles for that widget.
  7. Adjust the order of the selected widgets in the editor so the information you check most often appears first.
  8. To remove a selected widget, tap the red minus symbol beside it.
  9. Go back to save the changes, close the phone, double-tap the FlexWindow, and swipe left to check the result.

Only widgets supported by the current software and region appear in the selection list. If an app or service is absent, the editor is not necessarily malfunctioning; it may simply not provide a supported FlexWindow widget. The full app can still be opened on the main screen when the cover widget is unavailable.

Use Settings when the phone is open

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Cover Screen.
  3. Tap Widgets.
  4. Select the supported widgets you want, such as Calendar, Weather, or Battery.
  5. Return to the FlexWindow and swipe left through the selected pages.

Samsung documents both routes because the best choice depends on where you begin. The closed-screen route is convenient for quick edits; the Settings route is useful when you are configuring the phone during initial setup or troubleshooting. If your software presents a slightly different order, look for a Cover Screen submenu with a Widgets entry rather than assuming the feature is missing.

Keep the widget set useful

  • Calendar: a quick check of upcoming appointments.
  • Weather: a glance before leaving home.
  • Battery: a quick check before a commute or call.

Choose the information you can act on immediately. A widget that requires unfolding the phone every time defeats the purpose of the outer display. Put the most frequently checked page first, keep rarely used pages toward the end, and revisit the same editor when your routine changes. A short list also makes the two-finger overview easier to read.

Cover-screen gestures you will use every day

Wake the display

With the phone closed, double-tap the FlexWindow or press the power button. Either action wakes the cover screen so you can begin swiping. If the screen remains dark, press the power button once and try the gesture again; a double-tap must land on the display rather than the hinge or frame.

Move between widgets

Swipe left from the main cover-screen view to reach the widgets you selected. Swipe left or right among the widget pages, then tap a widget to open it directly when that widget supports an opened view. Pinch with two fingers on the FlexWindow to see all widgets at once, which is faster than moving through each page one by one. The overview is especially useful after adding several pages because it confirms the order without repeatedly swiping.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Open notifications

Swipe right on the cover screen to see notifications. Tap a notification to open it or swipe it away to dismiss it. Opening a notification may require unfolding the phone or completing an on-screen action, depending on the app and notification type. If you expected widgets and see alerts instead, swipe left; the two directions deliberately lead to different surfaces.

Open quick settings

Swipe down from the top edge of the FlexWindow. Samsung lists these quick-setting controls for the cover screen:

  • Wi-Fi
  • Volume
  • Bluetooth
  • Airplane mode
  • Flashlight
  • Network or mobile data
  • Screen recorder
  • Modes
  • Brightness

Samsung says the quick-setting icons on the FlexWindow cannot be modified. You can use the controls that are provided, but you cannot replace them with a custom selection from the cover-screen interface. This is different from choosing widgets: the widget list is configurable, while the quick-settings icon set is fixed by Samsung’s interface.

Change the FlexWindow wallpaper, clock, shortcuts, and battery display

Open the wallpaper editor

  1. Close the phone and double-tap the FlexWindow.
  2. Touch and hold the cover screen to enter editing.
  3. Swipe through the available wallpaper choices.
  4. Open the phone when prompted to continue editing.

Customize the clock and other details

In the editor, tap the clock to change its style, font, color, and displayed details. You can also choose a shortcut, such as Camera or Flashlight, select a battery-icon style, and adjust colors. Some additional choices, including Emoji options, depend on the wallpaper you selected, so a control may appear only after you choose a compatible design.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Tap the clock preview to select its style, font, color, and details.
  2. Choose a shortcut if you want one on the cover screen; Camera and Flashlight are examples Samsung provides.
  3. Select the battery icon style.
  4. Adjust the available colors and any wallpaper-dependent options.
  5. Tap Done to save.

These settings affect the cover-screen appearance, not the underlying widget list. If the clock looks right but a widget is missing, leave the wallpaper editor and use the widget editor instead. For everyday readability, favor strong contrast between the clock and the background; a decorative image that makes the time difficult to read is usually less useful than a simpler design.

Optional: set up Now Brief

Now Brief is an optional summary layer. You can complete the basic FlexWindow setup without enabling it, so add it only if a generated briefing is useful to you.

  1. Open the phone.
  2. Go to Settings > Galaxy AI > Now brief.
  3. Under Content, select the categories you want included.
  4. Go back to save the selection.
  5. If you want to view an expanded Now Brief without unlocking, enable the separate option that allows expanded access without unlocking.

Samsung documents access from Home or the Edge panel. The exact categories and wording can change with software and region. If you do not see Now brief under Galaxy AI, check for software updates and confirm that your device variant supports the feature; do not assume that every regional build exposes identical AI menus. Because Now Brief is a summary layer rather than a prerequisite widget, you can leave it off while you learn the basic cover-screen gestures.

Optional: configure Now Bar on the cover screen

Now Bar is another optional layer for categories and current activity. It is separate from the ordinary widget pages.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Lock screen and AOD.
  3. Tap Now bar.
  4. Choose View more.
  5. Select the categories you want displayed.
  6. Use the available toggles for Now brief and Current mode if you want those surfaces included.

To use Now Bar while the phone is closed, double-tap the FlexWindow or press the power button. Swipe upward on Now Bar, then select a category to expand it. Touch and hold Now Bar to edit its categories or settings. If you only want ordinary widgets, you can leave Now Bar disabled and continue using the left-swipe widget view. Keeping the two surfaces separate helps you tell whether a missing item belongs to the widget list or to Now Bar’s category settings.

Optional: launch Gemini with the side button

Gemini access is configured through the side button while the phone is open. It is not required for widgets, notifications, wallpaper, or quick settings.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Advanced features.
  3. Tap Side button.
  4. Under Long press, choose Digital assistant.
  5. Under Recommended AI assistant, choose Google.
  6. Close the phone and press and hold the side button to launch Gemini.

Permissions may be required. Samsung also notes that you may need to select something on screen before all information is shown. Basic Samsung Galaxy AI features are described as free, while enhanced Samsung AI and third-party AI features can have separate terms or fees. Check the terms presented on your device before relying on an AI feature for a particular task. You can skip this configuration entirely and still use every basic FlexWindow function described above.

A practical first-day configuration

Start with the essentials

  1. Set Calendar, Weather, and Battery as your initial widgets through either editor.
  2. Wake the display and verify that a left swipe reaches the widget pages.
  3. Swipe right to confirm that notifications are visible and that tapping one behaves as you expect.
  4. Swipe down to identify the quick settings you will use most, such as brightness, flashlight, or Bluetooth.
  5. Pinch with two fingers to confirm the widget order and remove any page that adds clutter.

Make the glance view readable

Choose a clock style and color that remain legible against the wallpaper. If a decorative wallpaper hides the clock or battery icon, select a simpler design or a contrasting color. Add a Camera or Flashlight shortcut only if you regularly need it; otherwise, the extra control adds visual noise. Test the display in the lighting where you normally check it, since a color combination that looks clear indoors may be harder to read outdoors.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Add AI surfaces only after the basics work

Now Brief, Now Bar, and Gemini each add another layer of settings and permissions. Configure them after the ordinary widget, notification, and quick-setting gestures are familiar. This makes it easier to identify whether a problem belongs to the basic FlexWindow or to an optional AI surface. If you do not need summaries or an assistant, leaving these features off keeps the closed-screen experience simpler.

Troubleshooting common setup problems

The FlexWindow will not wake

  • Double-tap the center of the cover display rather than the surrounding frame.
  • Press the power button once, then try the widget or notification swipe again.
  • Make sure the phone is fully closed; the cover-screen gestures described here apply to the closed device.

The Edit command is missing

Use the settings route: Settings > Cover Screen > Widgets. Samsung’s menu names can vary by region or software version, and the closed-screen editor may not look identical on every build. If the Cover Screen entry itself is absent, verify that you are in the phone’s main Settings app and check for a software update.

A widget is not listed

The FlexWindow selection list contains supported widgets only. An app that does not provide a supported cover-screen widget will not appear there. Use another supported widget for the same glanceable information or open the phone for the full app. Installing a separate app does not guarantee that it will gain a FlexWindow widget.

A widget was added but is hard to find

Wake the display, swipe left, and pinch with two fingers to view all widgets together. Return to the widget editor to remove pages you rarely use and keep the list focused. Review the selected-widget order at the top of the editor so the page you need most is not buried.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Notifications are not where expected

Swipe right, not left: left is the widget direction and right is the notification direction. Tap a notification to open it or swipe it away to dismiss it. Some notifications will require the phone to be unfolded for the complete app view. If no alerts appear, there may simply be no current notifications rather than a cover-screen fault.

Quick settings look different

The listed controls are supplied by Samsung and the icons cannot be customized from the FlexWindow. A different order or wording can reflect a software or regional variation. Use the available control, then return to the widget or wallpaper editor for settings that are actually customizable.

Now Brief, Now Bar, or Gemini is absent

These are optional features with software, region, and device-variant dependencies. Check the relevant menu path—Galaxy AI > Now brief, Lock screen and AOD > Now bar, or Advanced features > Side button—and look for a software update. The detailed Now Brief, Now Bar, and Gemini paths described by Samsung apply to the Galaxy Z Flip7 and Galaxy Z Flip7 FE, but availability and labels can still change by build. Permissions or separate service terms can also affect AI features even after their menu is enabled.

No. They are optional layers. Basic widgets, notifications, wallpaper controls, and quick settings work without them. Enable them only if their summaries, activity categories, or assistant access fit your routine.

What to remember

  • Double-tap or press the power button to wake the FlexWindow.
  • Swipe left for widgets, right for notifications, and down from the top for quick settings.
  • Use either the closed-screen Edit flow or Settings > Cover Screen > Widgets to choose supported widgets.
  • Pinch with two fingers to see all widgets at once.
  • Wallpaper editing also controls the clock, shortcut, battery icon, and colors; some choices depend on the wallpaper.
  • Now Brief, Now Bar, and Gemini are optional additions, not prerequisites for everyday cover-screen use.
  • No special purchase is required to complete the basic setup.

Samsung’s UK widget guidance was updated on 21 January 2026, while menu labels can continue to change with later software and regional releases. If your Galaxy Z Flip7 shows slightly different wording, follow the same functional categories rather than treating a missing label as a hardware fault.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the fastest way to edit the Galaxy Z Flip7 FlexWindow?

Close the phone, double-tap the FlexWindow, swipe left to widgets, touch and hold, and tap Edit. Open the phone when prompted, make changes, and go back to save.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why is an app missing from the widget list?

The list includes supported FlexWindow widgets only. An app without a supported cover-screen widget will not appear, so use another supported widget or open the full app on the main display.

How do I dismiss a cover-screen notification?

Wake the FlexWindow, swipe right, and swipe the notification away. Tap it instead if you want to open it.

Can I use the FlexWindow without AI features?

Yes. Widgets, notifications, quick settings, wallpaper, clock, shortcuts, and the battery display work without Now Brief, Now Bar, or Gemini.

The Bottom Line

For an efficient everyday setup, choose two or three supported widgets, learn the left-swipe widget and right-swipe notification gestures, and set a readable clock and wallpaper. Use Samsung’s Settings route or the closed-screen editor as convenient, leave fixed quick-setting icons alone, and add Now Brief, Now Bar, or Gemini only when their extra features are worthwhile.
