What you need before starting
Set aside enough uninterrupted time for the transfer. Large photo and video libraries can take considerably longer than contacts or messages, and both phones may restart during setup. Have the following ready:

Set up the Galaxy S26 Ultra for the first time
- Power on the phone. Hold the side button until the Galaxy logo appears.
- Choose a language and region. Confirm the keyboard and other regional choices when prompted.
- Review the legal screens. Accept only the terms and options you agree to; optional marketing or diagnostic choices can be changed where the wizard permits.
- Connect to Wi‑Fi. Select your network, enter its password and wait for the phone to check for updates. A stable connection helps Smart Switch and account setup.
- Choose the old-phone option. When the wizard asks whether you want to copy apps and data, choose the option to use your old phone. Select Galaxy/Android for an Android source or iPhone/iPad for an Apple source.
- Use Smart Switch. The S26 Ultra displays a Smart Switch QR code or instructions to open Smart Switch on the old phone. Scan the code when requested and approve the connection on both devices.
- Choose what to copy. Select Everything for the broadest migration, or choose a custom group such as accounts, calls, contacts and messages.
- Leave the phones alone until completion. Keep the screens on when prompted, do not unplug a cable and do not close Smart Switch. The phone may continue finishing app installations after the main progress bar reaches 100 percent.
- Complete the remaining wizard screens. Set a screen lock, biometric unlock, Google account and other requested preferences. These choices do not prevent you from checking the transferred content later.
Samsung describes Smart Switch quick setup as transferring existing accounts and networks through a QR code. The exact initial-setup screen can vary with the carrier and the software version installed on the phone.
Transfer from an Android or Galaxy phone wirelessly
Wireless Smart Switch is convenient when both phones need to remain connected to chargers. Samsung’s 2026 instructions say to keep the phones within 4 inches of each other while they pair and transfer. Install or update Smart Switch on both phones before starting if it is not already present.
- On the old phone, open Smart Switch and choose Send from this phone, then Wireless.
- On the S26 Ultra, open Smart Switch from the setup prompt (or from the Smart Switch app) and choose Receive on this phone, Galaxy/Android, then Wireless.
- Pair the phones by scanning the QR code shown on the S26 Ultra or by tapping Connect and approving the request on the old phone.
- Wait while Smart Switch scans the source phone. Review the categories it found.
- Choose Everything, Just accounts/calls/contacts/messages, or Custom. A custom selection is useful when the S26 Ultra has limited free storage or you want to leave large videos behind.
- Tap the transfer button and keep both phones within about 4 inches until Smart Switch reports that it is finished.
Wireless transfer allows both phones to remain on their chargers, but interference, distance and a busy Wi‑Fi environment can slow it down. If pairing fails, turn off battery-saving restrictions for Smart Switch, unlock both screens, bring the phones closer together and retry the QR-code connection.

Use a cable for the most complete Android transfer
Samsung recommends a wired Smart Switch transfer when you want the most types of data. The trade-off is that the phones cannot both remain connected to chargers during the cable transfer. Use a USB-C to USB-C data-transfer cable rather than a charge-only cable. If the old phone has Micro-USB or another connector, connect its cable through a compatible USB-OTG adapter.
- Connect the old phone and the S26 Ultra with the data cable. If the connectors differ, attach the OTG adapter to the appropriate end.
- On the old phone, open Smart Switch and select Send from this phone, then Cable.
- On the S26 Ultra, select Receive on this phone, choose the source phone type, then choose Cable.
- Tap Connect on the phone that requests it. Unlock the old phone and allow any USB or data-access prompt.
- Review Smart Switch’s scan, then choose Everything or a custom set of categories.
- Start the transfer. Keep the cable firmly connected and avoid using either phone until the completion message appears.
If the S26 Ultra does not detect the old phone, try another known-good data cable, reconnect both ends, unlock the source phone and accept its USB prompt. A cable that charges but does not carry data will not work. Connector mismatch requires an OTG adapter; a passive charging adapter may not provide the data connection Smart Switch needs.
Android transfer methods compared
| Method | Best for | Advantages | Limitations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Smart Switch wireless | Convenient setup with both phones available | No cable or adapter; both phones can remain connected to chargers | Phones must stay close (Samsung specifies within 4 inches for pairing/transfer); wireless conditions can affect speed |
| Smart Switch cable | The broadest direct Android migration | Samsung recommends wired transfer for the most types of data; direct phone-to-phone copy | Requires a data cable and possibly an OTG adapter; phones cannot both stay on chargers during the process |
| Google backup restore | When the old phone is unavailable or already wiped | Uses the backup associated with your Google account | Restoration is offered during setup on a new or reset phone, not directly from ordinary device settings |
| External-storage backup | When you need an intermediate copy | Smart Switch can back up to a USB-OTG flash drive or other external storage and restore it later | Requires suitable external storage and an additional backup/restore step |
Move data from an iPhone or iPad
The S26 Ultra can import available iPhone data through Smart Switch and iCloud. This route is useful when you do not have a suitable cable, or when the iPhone’s content is already backed up to iCloud.

- On the S26 Ultra, choose Receive data, then iPhone or iPad, and select Get data from iCloud.
- Enter the Apple ID and password used on the iPhone.
- Approve the verification code sent to the trusted iPhone or another trusted Apple device.
- Enter that code on the S26 Ultra.
- Review the data available in iCloud, select the categories you want and start the transfer.
- Keep the Galaxy connected to Wi‑Fi while Smart Switch downloads the selected content.
Samsung states that iTunes music and videos cannot be transferred from iCloud. Unencrypted iTunes music can instead be copied as files from a computer and then placed on the Galaxy. Content protected by digital-rights restrictions, data that was never included in the iCloud backup and items stored only in an iPhone app may require a separate export or sign-in.

Smart Switch also offers a cable path for an iPhone source. Choose Receive data, select iPhone or iPad, connect the phones with a compatible data cable and follow the prompts to trust the Galaxy and select content. Cable requirements depend on the iPhone connector and the cable or adapter combination you have; if the phones do not establish a data connection, use the iCloud method instead.
What Smart Switch and Android backup can copy
Samsung’s 2026 Galaxy S26 manual lists contacts, photos, music, videos, messages, notes and calendars as examples Smart Switch can transfer over USB, Wi‑Fi or a computer. Samsung warns that supported items vary according to the connected device and the transfer method. An app that fails to install may need to be downloaded manually from the appropriate app store.

Google’s Android setup process can restore apps and certain app data, music, photos, videos, contacts stored on the phone or SIM, text messages, multimedia in messages, wallpaper, call history and most settings. The following items generally require separate handling:
- PDFs and other downloads that are not part of the supported backup.
- Photos or videos in hidden folders.
- Apps installed outside Google Play.
- Data from apps that do not support Android backup.
- Non-Google accounts and their locally stored data.
- Some contacts or calendars that were not synced with a supported account.
- Protected app databases, local game saves and credentials that require the app’s own export or sign-in process.
Seeing an app icon on the new phone does not prove that its private data or login session transferred. Open important apps and follow their recovery or sign-in instructions.

Restore a Google backup during setup
Turn on the new or reset S26 Ultra, connect it to Wi‑Fi and sign in with the Google account used for the backup. When the setup wizard offers a backup, choose the relevant device and select the content to restore. Google backup restoration is available during this setup flow; Samsung’s guide says it is not available as a direct restore action from ordinary device settings after setup has finished. If you skipped the restore, you may need to reset the S26 Ultra and run the wizard again, so confirm that you have no new data on the phone before considering a reset.

Restore from Smart Switch external storage
If you previously used Smart Switch to back up the old phone to a USB-OTG flash drive or other external storage, connect that storage to the S26 Ultra with the required OTG adapter. Open Smart Switch, choose the restore option, select the backup and review the categories before starting. Keep the storage connected until Smart Switch confirms completion.
Check the S26 Ultra before erasing the old phone
Use this verification sequence after Smart Switch, iCloud or Google restore reports completion:
- Gallery and Photos: open several recent and older pictures, play videos and check albums. Confirm that cloud-only media is still available through its account.
- Contacts: check both the phone and SIM-related contacts, then confirm that the expected Google, Apple or other accounts are syncing.
- Messages: open recent conversations, older threads and messages containing photos or videos.
- Calendar and notes: check multiple accounts, recurring events, attachments and notes that are important for work or travel.
- Files: browse Downloads, Documents and any folders where you kept scans, PDFs or recordings.
- Password manager: unlock it and verify that the vault is present. Do not assume that a browser sign-in copied the vault.
- Two-factor authentication: open each authenticator and confirm codes or account recovery methods. Some authenticators require an explicit export and import.
- Critical apps: launch banking, messaging, health, work and travel apps, then complete their individual security checks.
- Calls and connectivity: make a test call, send a message, connect Bluetooth accessories and verify mobile service after inserting or activating the SIM/eSIM.
Only after these checks should you remove accounts, encrypt or erase the old phone, or hand it to another person. Keep the old device powered off but available for a short period if a critical app requires a recovery approval.

Smart Switch cannot find the other phone
- Unlock both phones and leave Smart Switch in the foreground.
- For wireless transfer, bring the devices within 4 inches, rescan the QR code and approve the connection.
- For cable transfer, reconnect both ends and accept the USB data prompt on the old phone.
- Replace a charge-only or damaged cable with a known data cable.
- Install or update Smart Switch on both phones and restart them if the connection still fails.
The transfer stops or appears frozen
- Keep both phones charged and prevent them from entering power-saving or locked states that pause the process.
- Do not disconnect a cable while the progress screen is active.
- Retry with a smaller custom selection if one category repeatedly fails; transfer photos, messages and accounts first, then copy large media separately.
- Make sure the S26 Ultra has enough free storage for the selected content.
An app or its data is missing
Check whether the app is compatible with the new Android version and whether it was installed outside Google Play. Download unsupported apps manually, sign in again and use the app’s own backup or export feature for private data. For contacts or calendars, add the account that owns the data and allow synchronization rather than importing duplicate files.
iCloud verification does not work
Confirm the Apple ID and password, keep the trusted iPhone connected to a network, request a new verification code and enter the newest code on the Galaxy. If iCloud does not contain the expected media or if the transfer repeatedly fails, use a direct cable path or export the content from a computer.
Quick Recap
Choosing the right method
| Your situation | Recommended path | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Both phones work and you want the fullest Android copy | Smart Switch cable | Samsung identifies wired transfer as supporting the most types of data. |
| You need both phones charging during migration | Smart Switch wireless | Wireless lets the phones remain connected to chargers. |
| You are moving from an iPhone with a current iCloud backup | Smart Switch iCloud import | No matching physical cable is required, although iTunes media has limitations. |
| The old phone is lost, broken or already erased | Google backup during setup or Smart Switch external-storage restore | Both methods work without a live phone-to-phone connection when a prior backup exists. |
| You need only essentials | Custom Smart Switch selection | Copies selected accounts, contacts, messages or media without filling the new phone with unwanted files. |
