For the ATH-R30x, comfortable setup is mainly a matter of correct orientation, full ear coverage and a properly positioned headband. Lower your device’s volume before connecting the headphones, place L on your left ear and R on your right, adjust the sliders until the earpads cover your ears, then set the headband and raise the volume gradually.
What you need to know before putting them on
The ATH-R30x is an open-back reference headphone with 40 mm drivers, 36 ohm impedance, a fixed 3.0 m cable and a 3.5 mm stereo mini plug. Audio-Technica lists its approximate weight as 210 g without the cable. A 6.3 mm stereo adapter is included. These specifications explain how the headphone connects and sits on your head, but they do not establish that one adjustment will feel comfortable for every listener.

An open-back design is intended for listening in a suitable environment rather than for blocking outside sound. Choose a place where sound from the headphones and nearby sounds will not disturb you or other people. Keep the cable routed where it will not catch on a chair, desk or other object.

Set up the ATH-R30x step by step
- Lower the source volume. Turn down the volume on the phone, computer, amplifier or other audio device you intend to use before making the connection.
- Connect the plug. Insert the headphone’s 3.5 mm input plug into the device’s headphone jack. If your equipment has a 6.3 mm headphone socket, fit the supplied 6.3 mm stereo adapter to the plug first.
- Match the sides. Put the side marked L on your left ear and the side marked R on your right ear.
- Position the earpads. Slide each adjuster up or down until the earpads cover your ears. The pads should sit around the ears rather than pressing against only part of them.
- Set the headband. After the earpad position is correct, adjust the headband so the headphone rests securely without forcing the cups away from your ears.
- Start playback and set the level. Turn on the audio device, begin playback and increase the volume only as needed. The connected device’s own manual may describe additional headphone-output controls.
This sequence follows the English setup wording in Audio-Technica’s ATH-R30x User Manual: lower the device volume, connect the input plug, match L and R to the corresponding ears, slide the adjusters so the earpads cover the ears, adjust the headband, then turn on the device and adjust volume as necessary.

How to find a comfortable physical fit
Start with complete ear coverage
Use the sliders to place the earcups at the height where the earpads surround your ears. If a pad is sitting partly on an ear, move that side’s adjuster rather than pushing the cup harder against your head. Make the left and right sides similar in height, while allowing for the natural shape of your head.
Set the headband only after the sliders
The manual places headband adjustment after earpad positioning. That order helps you avoid using the headband to compensate for earcups that are too high or too low. Once the pads are covering your ears, move the headband until the top of the headphone sits stably and the cups remain in place when you make small head movements.
Check the fit from several angles
- Look straight ahead and confirm that neither cup is tilted enough to expose part of an ear.
- Turn your head gently left and right. If a cup shifts, make a small slider or headband adjustment rather than tightening everything at once.
- Check that the cable drops naturally and is not pulling one side downward.
- If one ear feels different from the other, adjust the two sliders independently; equal slider positions are not required for every head shape.
Audio-Technica does not specify a universal headband position, a guaranteed pressure level or a listening-duration limit. Comfort remains individual, so use the position that keeps the pads covering the ears without creating unwanted pressure.

Connectors, cable and adapter
| Item | ATH-R30x detail | What it means during setup |
|---|---|---|
| Headphone plug | 3.5 mm stereo mini plug | Use a compatible headphone jack, with the source volume lowered before insertion. |
| Included adapter | 6.3 mm stereo adapter | Use it when the listening device has a 6.3 mm socket; it is listed as included, so it does not need to be purchased separately for the standard package. |
| Cable | Fixed, approximately 3.0 m | Allow enough slack for your seating position and keep the cable clear of snagging points. |
| Drivers | 40 mm | A product specification, not a setting that determines individual comfort. |
| Impedance | 36 ohms | The electrical specification supplied by the manufacturer; consult the source device’s documentation if its headphone output behaves unexpectedly. |
| Approximate weight | 210 g without the cable | The stated product weight; perceived comfort can still vary with head shape, pad position and headband adjustment. |
Volume setup after the fit is right
Do not use a high volume to compensate for an earpad that is not covering the ear. First correct the physical position, then start playback at the low level you selected before connection. Raise it gradually until the recording is clear enough for your room and source.
The ATH-R30x’s open-back construction makes the listening environment part of the setup. If nearby noise is distracting, move to a quieter location rather than immediately increasing the level. If other people can hear the program, lower the volume or use the headphones where sound leakage will not be a problem.
When changing from one source to another, lower the new source’s volume before unplugging and reconnecting. Source devices can use different output levels, so a setting that was suitable on one device may not be suitable on another.

Troubleshoot fit and connection problems
The sound appears on the wrong side
Remove the headphone and read the markings on the cups. The side marked L belongs on the left ear and the side marked R on the right. Then check the source recording or application’s channel balance if the orientation is correct but the image still seems reversed.

Move the slider on that side until the earpad covers the ear, then make a small headband adjustment. Do not rely on the headband alone to reposition a cup that is too high or too low.
The cups do not sit at the same height
Compare the slider positions and adjust each side independently. The cable’s weight or routing can also pull one side, so let the fixed 3.0 m cable hang freely before judging the final position.

No sound is heard
Confirm that the plug is fully inserted into the device’s headphone jack, that playback is running and that the device is not muted. If the device uses a 6.3 mm jack, verify that the supplied adapter is fitted securely. Check the device manual for its headphone-output selection or routing controls.
The level is unexpectedly loud
Stop playback or turn the source down immediately, then reconnect only after the volume is low. Different devices can output different levels, so reset the volume whenever you change sources.
The fit still feels uncomfortable
Remove the headphone, reset the sliders and repeat the adjustment with the pads centered around the ears before setting the headband. Inspect the cable path for tension and try a different seating position. If discomfort continues, take a break and do not assume that a tighter headband is the solution; the manual does not promise one universal fit.

Replacing the earpads or headpad
The manual lists model-specific HP-R30x earpads and a headpad as separately sold replacement items. Availability, current naming and compatibility should be verified before ordering. The 6.3 mm adapter is also listed in the manual as included with the headphone, so it is not a replacement requirement for the normal package.
Accessing the headpad
- Slide the headband slider down to make the headpad’s mounting area easier to reach.
- Thread the end of the replacement headpad through its mounting hole.
- Secure the headpad and return the slider to a position that keeps the headphone stable.
For earpad replacement, use HP-R30x parts identified for this model and follow the replacement part’s instructions. Do not substitute an unverified part merely because it appears to have a similar shape; the manual identifies the model-specific part by name.
A practical final check
- The device volume was low before the plug was connected.
- L is on the left ear and R is on the right.
- Both earpads cover the ears.
- The headband holds the cups securely without being used to force them into position.
- The 3.5 mm plug or supplied 6.3 mm adapter matches the device’s jack.
- The fixed cable has slack and is not pulling on either cup.
- Playback starts quietly, then the volume is raised only as necessary.
Once these checks pass, leave the sliders and headband at the position that works for you and repeat the low-volume connection step whenever you move to another audio device.
