The fastest route to a good first session on the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X20 is to finish Windows 11 Home, install every Windows, Microsoft Store and ASUS update, sign in only to the game libraries you use, and set a performance profile before launching a title. Then check controls, configure battery care if it will stay plugged in, and add a high-performance microSD card before your library fills the internal drive.
This guide uses the RC73XA configuration identified in ASUS specifications. Retail listings may use different X20 wording, so confirm that your unit is the Windows 11 Home model before following the software steps.

What to do before installing a game
Put the handheld on its charger and connect it to dependable Wi-Fi. A first-day setup can involve Windows updates, Microsoft Store downloads, ASUS drivers and firmware, and launcher updates; starting with a nearly empty battery or an unreliable connection creates avoidable interruptions.

Complete Windows 11 Home setup
- Turn on the Ally X20 and work through the Windows 11 Home first-run screens.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account you intend to use for Microsoft Store and Xbox services. Use the same account consistently if you want Game Pass purchases, saves and entitlements to appear together.
- Allow Windows to reach the desktop and finish any pending first-run configuration before installing a large game.
ASUS’s RC73XA specification identifies Windows 11 Home as the operating system. It is a full Windows PC rather than a console-only appliance, so the first boot includes normal Windows account, privacy, network and update decisions.

Install updates in the right order
- Open Settings > Windows Update, select the option to check for updates, install everything offered, and restart whenever Windows requests it. Repeat the check until no further updates are waiting.
- Open Microsoft Store > Library and choose Get updates. This updates Store components and Xbox-related software that may be needed by Game Pass titles.
- Launch Armoury Crate SE and open Update Center. Apply the ASUS drivers, firmware and software updates shown there, restarting between packages if the application asks you to.
Do not treat one update path as a substitute for the others. Windows Update, Microsoft Store and Armoury Crate SE maintain different layers of the handheld. Armoury Crate SE also contains the performance-mode and battery-care controls you will use later.
Configure Armoury Crate SE before your first game
Armoury Crate SE is the Ally X20’s main control center. Use it to bring launchers into one library, apply ASUS updates, choose a performance profile, remap inputs and set battery-care behavior.
Build the game library
Sign in only to services where you already own games or have an active subscription. The supported launchers include Xbox Game Pass, Steam, Epic Games Launcher, Ubisoft Connect, EA App and GOG Galaxy.

- Install the launcher you need from its official Windows distribution or Microsoft Store listing.
- Sign in, let the launcher complete its own update, and install a small test title or verify an existing library if possible.
- In Armoury Crate SE, use its library-management controls to scan for or add the installed game. Repeat the scan after installing games later; a title installed by a launcher is not necessarily visible until Armoury Crate SE imports it.
The Xbox handheld software provides a full-screen experience and a dedicated Game Bar overlay. The Xbox button opens that overlay, giving you a controller-friendly way to reach handheld controls without returning to the Windows desktop.

Choose a profile before launching
Use the Armoury Crate or Command Center controls to select a performance profile while you are still at the desktop or launcher. Start with the balanced profile. If a demanding game needs more frame-rate headroom, switch to the higher-power profile before launching it rather than changing settings during a troubleshooting session.

There is no universal “best” mode. Compare the result in the actual game: watch frame pacing, listen for fan noise, note how quickly the battery falls, and keep the lowest-power profile that delivers a stable experience.
Check controls and accessibility
Open the input and accessibility sections in Armoury Crate SE before starting a long session. Xbox’s getting-started guidance notes that button remapping and input-accessibility settings are available there.
- Test both sticks, triggers, bumpers, face buttons, the D-pad and the rear controls in a game or input test.
- Remap a difficult shortcut to a reachable button only after recording the original mapping. This makes it easy to undo an experiment.
- Set text size, contrast or other accessibility options that you need before entering a game; changing them later can require leaving full-screen mode.
For air travel, turn on airplane mode. Xbox specifically recommends it to save battery and avoid interruptions during a flight.

Battery setup that avoids premature wear
The ROG Xbox Ally X has an 80Wh battery, according to ASUS’s 2025 product announcement. Actual play time depends on the selected profile, display settings, game workload, wireless activity and software updates, so the capacity is not a promise of a particular number of hours.
Use battery care when the handheld stays plugged in
- Open Armoury Crate SE and find its battery-care control.
- Enable the setting when the Ally X20 will spend most of its time connected to AC power, such as on a desk or beside a dock.
- Read the current description in your software version and follow it rather than relying on a remembered charge percentage. ASUS can change the charging behavior through software revisions.
When you are leaving the house, charge normally, disconnect the charger after the desired level, and carry the power adapter if you expect a long high-load session. For flights, airplane mode reduces wireless activity and prevents notifications from interrupting play.
Add storage before your library fills the internal drive
The RC73XA includes a UHS-II microSD reader that supports SD, SDXC and SDHC cards. A card is the clearest first accessory if you plan to keep several large PC games installed.
What to buy
ROG’s official setup tips recommend a SanDisk microSD option for the ROG Xbox Ally family in capacities from 512GB to 2TB. The published guidance does not provide a complete list of RC73XA-validated model numbers, so verify the exact card listing, capacity, UHS rating, sustained read/write specification, warranty and seller reputation at purchase time.

Install and use the card
- Shut down the Ally X20 before inserting the microSD card. Do not force the card; align it with the reader’s orientation.
- Boot Windows and open Settings > System > Storage to confirm that the card appears.
- In each launcher, choose the card as an installation location or add a library folder on it. Armoury Crate SE can then import those installed games into its library.
- Keep the internal drive available for Windows updates and games that perform poorly from removable storage. If a title stutters or takes unusually long to load, test it from internal storage before blaming the game’s graphics settings.
Set up docked play only after handheld play works
The Ally X20’s USB4 and USB-C DisplayPort/Power Delivery ports support external displays and peripherals. A dock is optional: the handheld is ready to play without one, and a dock adds another power, display and USB link to troubleshoot.
Dock selection checklist
- Power: Check the dock’s USB-C Power Delivery wattage against the charger and the performance mode you intend to use.
- Display: Confirm the required DisplayPort or HDMI output and the resolution/refresh combination your monitor accepts.
- Expansion: Count the USB ports needed for a keyboard, mouse, storage and controller. Add Ethernet if wired networking matters to you.
- Stability: Choose a dock that holds the handheld securely and does not strain the USB-C connector when the screen is connected.
Xbox Wire announced the ROG Bulwark Dock 2025 as “Coming Soon.” Its current regional price and stock status are not established, so check availability at the time you buy rather than planning around a guaranteed launch date.
Controller choice for the big screen
The ROG Raikiri II Xbox Wireless Controller is one named option in the Designed for Xbox accessory line. Treat a controller as an optional docked-play purchase, not a first-boot requirement. Before buying any controller, confirm its wireless mode, wired fallback, button-remapping support and comfort for long sessions. Keep the Ally X20’s built-in controls available as a fallback while you test the wireless connection.

- Connect to AC power if you want maximum performance, or confirm that your battery level is sufficient for the selected profile.
- Open Armoury Crate SE or the Command Center and choose Balanced for the first run.
- Launch the game from Armoury Crate SE or its native launcher, then allow shader compilation and any in-game first-run setup to finish.
- Use the Xbox button to open the enhanced Game Bar overlay if you need handheld controls, without leaving the game.
- Play a repeatable scene for several minutes. Check frame pacing, fan noise, temperature comfort and battery drain.
- If performance is not sufficient, exit to the launcher, select a higher-power profile, and relaunch. Change one major variable at a time so you know what fixed the problem.
- Save the profile choice for that game if your Armoury Crate SE version offers per-game settings; otherwise, make the profile change part of your launch routine.
Xbox says its advanced shader delivery can make select games launch up to 10 times faster and use less battery on first play. That is Xbox’s description of the feature, not an independently measured result for every game; the benefit depends on whether a title supports the delivery path.
Troubleshooting first-day problems
Windows or Store updates keep returning
- Restart the Ally X20, reconnect to reliable Wi-Fi and run Settings > Windows Update again.
- Open Microsoft Store > Library > Get updates and let Store apps finish before launching a game.
- Return to Armoury Crate SE’s Update Center after Windows restarts. Firmware and ASUS packages may not appear until prerequisite Windows components are current.
A game is installed but missing from Armoury Crate SE
- Open the game’s original launcher and confirm that the installation completed.
- In Armoury Crate SE, run its library scan or add-the-game function.
- If the game is on the microSD card, confirm that the card is mounted and that the launcher’s library path still points to the card.
- Restart Armoury Crate SE after the scan. Keep the native launcher installed because Armoury Crate SE aggregates games; it does not replace the service that owns the license.
The game is too slow in Balanced
Close background downloads, confirm that the handheld is not in airplane mode if the title needs online services, and test the higher-power profile before changing many graphics settings. If the higher-power profile helps, the trade-off is increased power draw and fan noise. If it does not, lower the game’s resolution or demanding effects one at a time and retest.
The battery falls quickly while plugged in
Check which profile is active, whether a game is compiling shaders or downloading content, and whether the charger and dock are delivering power. Enable Armoury Crate SE’s battery-care setting for long plugged-in use, following the wording shown by your current software revision.

An external display or USB device is not detected
- Reconnect the USB-C cable firmly and verify that you are using the port that supports the required DisplayPort or Power Delivery function.
- Check the dock’s power connection and its advertised USB-C Power Delivery wattage.
- Test the display or peripheral directly with the handheld when possible. If it works directly but not through the dock, the dock, cable or output standard is the likely difference.
First-day checklist
- Windows 11 Home setup completed with the intended Microsoft account.
- Windows Update has no remaining required restart.
- Microsoft Store apps are updated from Library.
- Armoury Crate SE Update Center has been checked and its ASUS packages installed.
- Xbox, Steam, Epic Games Launcher, Ubisoft Connect, EA App or GOG Galaxy accounts are signed in only where needed.
- Games appear in Armoury Crate SE’s library.
- Balanced profile is selected for the first launch, with a higher-power option ready for demanding games.
- Buttons, sticks, triggers and accessibility settings have been tested.
- Battery-care behavior is enabled when the handheld will remain plugged in.
- A compatible 512GB–2TB microSD card is installed if extra storage is needed.
- Any dock, display and controller have been tested separately before a long docked session.
