The dependable PC-to-mobile method documented today is a vanilla dedicated server: bring the PC, mobile clients, and server to compatible builds, run a world on the server, then have the mobile player use Join via IP on port 7777 unless the host changed it.

Re-Logic’s September 24, 2026 State of the Game says the team is still “putting the finishing touches on Crossplay Phase One” and that “Crossplay – Phase One should be in your hands in the near future.” Treat that as a roadmap update, not proof that every platform already shares one official matchmaking or friend-invite network.

There are two different ideas often called crossplay:
- Official platform crossplay: a built-in service lets players on different platforms find one another through accounts, invitations, or a shared browser.
- Server-based multiplayer: players on different devices connect to the same Terraria server by address and port.
The first is the feature Re-Logic calls Crossplay Phase One. The September 24, 2026 developer update says work is still being completed, so availability can change after this article’s publication date. The second is the practical route you can configure now using the official dedicated-server software and a vanilla world.
#1 Best Overall
- In Terraria, every world is unique-from the floating islands in the sky to the deepest level of The Underworld. Adventure to the ends of the earth, and defeat villainous bosses along the way. The world is your canvas!
A server connection does not mean that a PC friend can automatically invite a phone into a single-player world. One device or hosted machine must run the server process, and every participant must be able to reach it. For a same-home test, that usually means using the host computer’s local network address. For players in different homes, the host must make the server reachable from the internet.
Requirements checklist
Prepare these items before troubleshooting. Most failed connections are caused by a missing prerequisite rather than a Terraria setting.
- A copy of Terraria for PC for the PC participant and the appropriate mobile edition for Android or iOS participants.
- A dedicated-server package that matches the host environment and the game build. The official Terraria site provides separate PC Dedicated Server and Mobile Dedicated Server downloads.
- Matching, mutually compatible versions on the PC client, mobile client, and server. Platform releases can be staggered.
- The server computer’s local IP address for a home-network test, or its public address for players connecting from elsewhere.
- The server port. The documented workflow uses 7777 by default; use the actual port shown by your server if you changed it.
- Firewall permission for the server application and, for internet play, router port forwarding to the computer running the server.
- A vanilla baseline for the first test. Do not begin by adding PC-only mod loaders or mod packs.
Choose the connection method
| Method | Best for | Addressing | Host requirements | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dedicated server on a home PC | Families, local groups, or a persistent world controlled by one player | Local IP on the same network; public address for remote friends | The host machine must run the server and remain reachable | Firewall, router, and version maintenance are your responsibility |
| Dedicated server on another host | Groups that need a world available when the owner’s PC is off | Internet address and configured port | A continuously available server environment | Requires server administration and a compatible service; no particular provider is established here |
| Direct platform invite or shared matchmaking | Players after the official Crossplay Phase One feature is released for their builds | Whatever address or account flow the released feature specifies | All platforms must have the feature enabled and compatible versions | Not confirmed as a complete, live rollout in the September 24, 2026 update |
| Mobile-to-mobile multiplayer | Android and iOS players, including phones and tablets | Mobile multiplayer flow supported by the edition | Compatible mobile builds and a reachable host | This does not by itself connect a mobile player to every PC-hosted world without a compatible server path |
The dedicated-server route offers the clearest documented bridge between PC and mobile. It also gives you control over the world, password, port, and who can connect, but it involves more setup than a future built-in invitation feature.
Step 1: Update every participant and the server
Update Terraria on the PC, each phone or tablet, and the dedicated server package before creating a world. Check the exact version number shown by each installation rather than assuming that every platform’s store or launcher delivered the same build.
Re-Logic’s January 2026 release announcement said version 1.4.5 rolled out to PC, console, and mobile, except for the bespoke China Mobile edition. Its August 2026 announcement then recorded PC 1.4.5.7 shipping before console and mobile submissions had completed. The September 2026 roadmap also referred to lingering fixes from 1.4.5.8. Those dated updates demonstrate why “latest version” can differ by platform even when all devices appear fully updated.
Write down the complete build string from the PC client, mobile client, and server. If one platform is waiting for a submission, do not try to work around an incompatibility by repeatedly reinstalling or changing network settings; first determine whether the builds are actually compatible.

Step 2: Download the official dedicated-server software
Open the official Terraria website and use its dedicated-server downloads. Select PC Dedicated Server when the server will run in a PC environment, or Mobile Dedicated Server when the host environment and current build call for that package. Keep the server software on the same release family as the clients.
For the first connection, use the unmodified server and unmodified clients. The available evidence documents official server software and mobile networking behavior; it does not establish that a PC-only mod loader, content mod, or mod pack can be used by a mobile client. A modded PC can therefore create a false diagnosis: an error that looks like a network failure may actually be a client-content mismatch.
Step 3: Create or select the world on the server
Launch the dedicated-server application and follow its world-selection flow. You can create a new world or select an existing world file, then choose the server settings exposed by that build. Set a password if you want to restrict access, and note the port displayed by the server.
The current cross-platform procedure identifies 7777 as the common port. Do not blindly forward that number if your configuration shows a different one: the port entered by the mobile player must be the same port on which the server is listening.
Leave the server window or service running. A client cannot join a world after the server process has stopped, even if the address and port are correct. Keep the server’s status output visible during the first test so you can see whether a connection attempt arrives.
Step 4: Test on the same home network first
A local test separates Terraria configuration from internet routing. Connect the PC and mobile device to the same home network, preferably the same Wi-Fi or wired LAN, and identify the local IP address of the computer running the server. Use that local address rather than the home router’s public address for this test.

- Confirm that the dedicated server is running and listening on its configured port.
- Allow the server application through the host computer’s firewall when the operating system prompts you. If no prompt appears, add an inbound rule for the server application or its listening port using your operating system’s firewall controls.
- On the PC, open Terraria’s multiplayer menu and choose the option that joins an existing server. Enter the server’s local address and port when prompted.
- On Android or iOS, open the multiplayer menu and choose Join via IP. Enter the same local address and the server port, normally 7777.
- Join with one client first, then add the other. Watch the server output for a successful connection or an explicit rejection.
If the local test succeeds, the Terraria world, server build, and client builds are probably compatible. You can then work on remote access without changing the game configuration.
Step 5: Allow friends outside your network to connect
Remote play requires more than a Terraria setting. The host’s firewall must permit inbound traffic, and the home router must forward the server port to the computer running the server. Router menus differ by manufacturer, so look for a port-forwarding or virtual-server section and target the host computer’s fixed local address.
Give remote players the host’s public address and the forwarded port, not the private address used in the local test. Do not publish that address in a public chat if you do not want strangers attempting to connect. A password on the Terraria server adds an application-level barrier, but it does not replace firewall and router controls.
Some internet connections use carrier-grade NAT. In that situation, the household router may not receive a directly reachable public IPv4 address, and ordinary port forwarding may not work. Ask the internet provider whether inbound hosting is supported or use a server environment with a reachable address. This is a network limitation, not evidence that the mobile client lacks crossplay support.
Step 6: Join from Android or iOS with Join via IP
505 Games’ mobile support guidance says multiplayer works across device families, including Android-to-iOS and phones-to-tablets, and that mobile multiplayer generally works like non-Steam PC multiplayer Terraria. The practical PC-to-mobile workflow therefore uses the server address rather than depending on a platform friend list.
- Open Terraria on the mobile device.
- Choose Multiplayer.
- Select Join via IP.
- Enter the server address: the host’s local IP for a same-network game, or the host’s public address for a remote game.
- Enter port 7777, unless the server administrator configured another port.
- Enter the server password if one was set.
- Submit the connection and wait for the server to accept the client.
When a mobile device cannot see a PC world in a friend list, that is not necessarily a failure. The documented dedicated-server method is address-based, so use Join via IP and verify the address, port, and running server.

Step 7: Join from PC
The PC participant joins the same dedicated server rather than hosting a separate local world. Use Terraria’s multiplayer option for joining an existing server, then provide the same address and port used by the mobile player. For a local game, the PC can use the server computer’s local address; for an internet game, it can use the public address or the appropriate route supplied by the host.
Only one copy of the world should be treated as authoritative: the world loaded by the dedicated server. Starting a second copy of the world in single-player does not connect it to the mobile player and can create confusion about which world contains the latest progress.

“Incompatible host version”
Compare the complete version numbers of the PC client, mobile client, and server. Re-check the platform release notes and store updates, because PC hotfixes and console/mobile submissions can arrive at different times. The 1.4.5, 1.4.5.7, and 1.4.5.8 announcements show why a device can report “up to date” while still not matching another platform. Update the out-of-step participant or server when a compatible build becomes available; changing ports will not fix a version mismatch.

The mobile device cannot find the world
Do not rely on a platform friend list for this workflow. Select Join via IP, confirm the address is the server host rather than another device, and enter the server’s actual listening port. Check that the dedicated-server process is still running and that the host firewall allows it to receive connections.
Local play works, but internet play fails
Keep the successful local settings unchanged and check the network path in order: confirm the public address, verify router forwarding points to the correct computer, confirm the host firewall rule, and check whether the internet provider uses carrier-grade NAT. A public address can also change after a router reconnect, so confirm it again before asking friends to retry.
The server starts, but no client can connect
Read the server’s own status output for the listening port and startup errors. Make sure the selected world exists and that the server process did not close after a prompt or permission failure. Test from the host’s local network before attempting remote connections; if even the local test fails, focus on the server build, firewall, address, and port rather than router forwarding.

A modded PC client will not connect
Return every participant and the server to an unmodified, vanilla build. The documented cross-device procedure does not establish compatibility between PC-only mods and mobile clients. Once a vanilla connection works, you can evaluate any modification separately, but all players would need a supported client and content combination.

Android and iPhone players cannot connect to each other
Mobile multiplayer is documented as supporting Android-to-iOS and phone-to-tablet play. Check that both devices have compatible mobile builds, are using the same server or mobile multiplayer path, and are entering the correct address and port. Device family alone is not the expected blocker.
Security and reliability practices
- Use a non-obvious server password when the world is not meant to be public.
- Forward only the port required by the Terraria server; do not expose unrelated administration services.
- Reserve or otherwise stabilize the host computer’s local address so a router rule does not point to the wrong device after a reboot.
- Keep the server software and clients on compatible current builds, especially after a platform hotfix.
- Back up the world before major updates or experiments with mods.
- Stop the server cleanly before shutting down the host computer to reduce the chance of a damaged world file.
- For a remote group, keep the host online for the entire session and tell players when maintenance or an update changes the address or port.
What to expect from Crossplay Phase One
Re-Logic’s September 24, 2026 post is the authoritative status statement available for the roadmap: the team was finishing Crossplay Phase One and expected it “in the near future.” It does not specify in that statement which platforms, matchmaking services, account systems, or build numbers will be included at launch. Do not replace a working dedicated-server setup with assumptions about invitations until the feature appears in the version and platform combination your group uses.
When a future update adds built-in crossplay, keep the dedicated-server method as a fallback for groups that need a persistent world, direct address control, or a setup independent of platform matchmaking. Re-check the in-game menus and the current developer notes after updating, because labels and supported routes can change.
Fast decision guide
- Playing in one house: run the official dedicated server on one computer, test with local IP addresses, and use Join via IP on mobile.
- Playing across different homes: use the dedicated server, configure firewall and router access, and give friends the public address and port.
- Seeing an incompatible-host message: stop network troubleshooting and compare exact client and server builds first.
- Wanting a modded PC world with mobile friends: start with a vanilla server; current documentation does not establish PC-mod/mobile compatibility.
- Only Android and iOS devices are involved: mobile multiplayer supports cross-device-family play, including Android-to-iOS and phones-to-tablets, subject to compatible builds and a reachable host.
- Waiting for one-click invitations: monitor Re-Logic’s Crossplay Phase One release status; the September 2026 update still described it as in finishing work.
The Bottom Line
For PC and mobile Terraria play today, use a vanilla dedicated server, match the exact client and server versions, and connect the mobile player through Join via IP on port 7777 unless configured otherwise. Treat Re-Logic’s Crossplay Phase One as forthcoming until your installed builds explicitly provide the official feature.
