How to Set Up Stripe Connect for a SaaS Marketplace

Use Stripe Connect when your SaaS platform extends payment processing or Stripe products to merchants. If you only charge customers for access to your software and do not process payments for your users, Connect is not needed just for SaaS billing. For a marketplace, decide the commercial model, payment flow, account responsibilities, and seller-onboarding process before creating production accounts.

Do you need Stripe Connect for your SaaS?

Connect is intended for platforms that extend payment processing or Stripe products to merchants. A SaaS company that only bills its customers for software subscriptions does not need Connect solely to collect those subscription payments. The deciding question is whether your product processes or otherwise extends payments for the businesses using it.

For a marketplace, map the real transaction before choosing an integration: who sells to the end customer, whether one or several sellers receive funds, when the recipient is known, and which party should handle payment fees, refunds, disputes, and negative balances.

Choose the commercial model before the payment flow

Stripe describes two broad commercial arrangements for SaaS platforms using Connect. They affect how the platform earns revenue and how costs and losses are allocated. They are separate from the technical decision about how a specific customer payment moves.

Commercial model Merchant and fee responsibilities Potential platform revenue Payment flows described
Stripe-owned pricing or referral model Connected merchants are merchant of record, pay Stripe processing fees, and are responsible for their negative balances. The platform may charge a SaaS subscription or application fees. Revenue share may be available to eligible platforms that meet activation targets; confirm current eligibility and terms with Stripe. Generally direct charges.
Buy-rate model The platform buys and resells processing. Connected merchants remain merchant of record and are liable to the platform for negative balances. The platform sets resale pricing; Stripe describes platform pricing tools for application-fee logic. Direct charges or destination charges with on_behalf_of, as supported for the selected configuration.

Do not assume that an application fee, revenue share, or a particular loss allocation is available for your account. Confirm current commercial terms and regional eligibility with Stripe before designing pricing or seller contracts.

Choose how each payment and payout should move

Direct charges and separate charges and transfers solve different transaction patterns. Select based on the order flow, not just which approach is easiest to describe in code.

Decision point Direct charges Separate charges and transfers
Where the charge is created On the connected account in the Stripe-owned SaaS model described by Stripe. On the platform account, followed by transfers from the platform.
Typical recipient pattern A merchant takes payment for its own customer. One payment is split among multiple accounts, or the recipient is chosen after the customer pays.
Platform exposure Depends on the selected commercial model and account responsibilities. Stripe fees, refunds, and disputes affect the platform balance.
Refund implications Check the current Stripe guidance for the chosen direct-charge flow and fee behavior. Refunding the platform charge does not automatically reverse associated transfers.
Geography Verify support for the connected-account country and chosen flow. Stripe documents regional restrictions and generally requires the platform and connected accounts to be in the same region, subject to documented exceptions.

Before committing, compare who is merchant of record, how many sellers can receive money from an order, whether recipients are known at checkout, who absorbs fees and payment losses, and whether the flow is supported in the countries where you operate. No single flow is right for every marketplace.

Set account responsibilities and dashboard expectations

Stripe’s Accounts v2 configuration includes choices about who collects payment fees and who is responsible for connected-account negative balances. These choices affect what information sellers must provide and how the connected-account dashboard is configured. Some settings must be selected when adding the merchant configuration and cannot later be edited, so validate the intended account type and payment flow before provisioning live sellers.

Decide whether sellers will interact with a Stripe-hosted dashboard or rely on your platform’s own interface for their operational tasks. The exact configuration and available dashboard experience depend on the account setup; confirm that your chosen arrangement is supported rather than assuming every account has the same capabilities.

If your platform collects and manages KYC requirements, plan for ongoing operations: requirements can change, and the platform must monitor and maintain compliance. Assign an owner for requirement changes, seller follow-up, and account-status support before launch.

How do I set up Stripe Connect for a SaaS marketplace?

  1. Confirm the use case. Establish that your platform extends payment processing or Stripe products to merchants; ordinary billing for your own SaaS subscription alone is not a Connect use case.
  2. Choose the commercial arrangement. Decide between Stripe-owned/referral pricing and buy-rate based on your fee model, merchant responsibilities, and negative-balance exposure. Confirm current program terms and eligibility.
  3. Map the funds flow. Choose direct charges when a seller takes payment for its own customer in a supported configuration. Consider separate charges and transfers when the platform charges first and must split funds or select recipients later. Model platform exposure to processing fees, refunds, and disputes.
  4. Set connected-account responsibilities. Decide who collects payment fees and who bears negative balances, then confirm the account configuration, requirements collection, and dashboard arrangement before production account creation.
  5. Register and activate the platform. Complete the platform’s Stripe registration and activation before creating connected accounts for sellers.
  6. Create connected accounts on your server. Keep account creation in the platform’s server-side integration. If your application already collected seller information, prefill eligible fields before sending the seller through onboarding.
  7. Generate an onboarding link. Create an Account Link for the connected account with the account_onboarding type and the required refresh_url and return_url. Send the authenticated seller to the link within your platform.
  8. Support onboarding resumption. Account Links are temporary and single-use. When a seller needs to resume, generate a fresh link rather than reusing an expired or consumed one.
  9. Verify readiness from account state. Do not treat the return redirect as proof of successful onboarding. Retrieve the connected account’s state or process account.updated; check payment and charge readiness and any outstanding requirements. Give sellers a clear route to continue onboarding if anything remains due.
  10. Build operational updates and reconciliation. Use Connect webhooks to update merchant status and payment records. For separate charges and transfers, define how you will reconcile or recover seller funds after refunds or disputes; a charge refund does not automatically reverse transfers.

Build seller status around verified account state

Onboarding is not a one-time redirect. A seller can return to your site while still having information to provide, and requirements can change after initial setup. Treat the connected account’s current requirements and payment readiness as the source for your platform’s seller state.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Use account-state retrieval or the account.updated webhook to refresh the seller record.
  • Distinguish between a seller who has returned from onboarding and one whose account is ready to accept the payments your product needs.
  • Show what action is needed and offer a way to create a fresh onboarding link when requirements remain outstanding.
  • Keep webhook-driven account status and your marketplace’s seller status in sync so stale local data does not misrepresent payment readiness.

Plan refunds, disputes, transfers, and reconciliation

With separate charges and transfers, the platform creates the charge and then transfers funds. A later refund of that charge does not automatically undo the transfers. Your operational design therefore needs to account for the fact that funds may already have reached seller accounts when the platform must refund a customer or respond to a dispute.

  • Record the relationship between each platform charge and its associated transfers so the transaction can be reconciled.
  • Define how your team will handle a refund or dispute when seller funds have already been transferred, including the process for resolving any amount the platform cannot recover.
  • Use transfer reversals only for related refunds or disputes, or to correct a transfer, and account for balance and connected-account constraints.
  • Use relevant Connect webhook events, including application-fee events where applicable, to keep payment records and seller balances operationally consistent.

Validate the configuration before going live

Stripe’s supported countries, account requirements, API behavior, and fee or responsibility configurations can change. Check the current Stripe documentation for your platform country, seller countries, account configuration, and chosen charge flow before creating production accounts. Test onboarding completion and resumption, readiness updates, payment processing, refunds, disputes, and transfer reconciliation in the environment and configuration intended for launch.
