Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →You can follow a stock without leaving a quote screen open: create an alert in the brokerage or charting app you already use, set an above- or below-price condition, choose a delivery channel, and verify what happens after it triggers. An alert is only a notification; it does not place an order or guarantee that a later trade will execute at the alert price.
What a stock price alert does—and does not do
A stock price alert watches a defined condition for you. When the provider detects that condition, it sends a message through one or more channels, such as a phone push notification, email, text message, desktop pop-up, or an in-app alert center. The available conditions and channels depend on the service and account settings.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
The condition is normally a threshold and a direction. For example, you might ask to be notified when a share price rises above $120 or falls below $95. Other services add percentage moves, 52-week highs or lows, moving-average crossings, or chart-based conditions. A trigger tells you that a condition was observed; it is not an instruction to buy or sell. Schwab’s official walkthrough distinguishes creating an alert from placing a trade, and the SEC explains how order instructions work in its Investor Bulletin on order types.
- Alert: a message that a selected condition occurred.
- Market order: an instruction to trade at the best available price, which can differ from the price you saw.
- Limit order: an instruction to trade only at your specified price or better; it may never fill. The SEC states, “A limit order is not guaranteed to execute.”
- Stop order: a trade instruction that becomes a market order when its stop price is reached, so the eventual execution price is not guaranteed. See the SEC’s stop-order bulletin.
Keeping those roles separate prevents a common mistake: treating a notification as automatic protection against a loss or as a guaranteed entry price.

The universal setup flow
Menu names differ, but the sequence is nearly the same in a brokerage app, a web platform, or a charting service.
- Open the service you already use. Sign in to your brokerage or charting app. An existing account usually provides enough capability for straightforward price notifications; add another service only when it supplies a condition or delivery method your current app lacks.
- Find the security. Search by the company’s ticker or full name, then open its quote, security-detail, or chart page. Confirm that the symbol and exchange are the intended ones before creating anything.
- Locate the alert control. Look for a bell icon or a label such as Set Alert, Create alert, or Price alert. It may be available from the quote page, a watchlist row, a chart, or a separate alert manager.
- Select the condition. Choose whether the price should cross above or below a threshold. Enter the target using the price type the service requests; some platforms distinguish last price, bid, ask, or another quote value. If offered, you can instead choose a percentage move, 52-week level, moving-average crossing, or chart condition.
- Choose delivery. Pick app push, email, text, desktop pop-up, or any combination the provider supports. Check both the account’s alert preferences and your device’s notification permission; either setting can block delivery.
- Set frequency and expiration. Decide whether the notification should fire once, repeat whenever the condition is met, or remain active until a date. Some services remove a one-time alert after it fires, while others leave it active.
- Save and verify. Reopen the alert list and check the ticker, threshold, direction, delivery channel, frequency, and expiration. A saved alert that is attached to the wrong symbol is worse than no alert.
- Review what happened after a trigger. Confirm whether the alert is now inactive, still recurring, or waiting for a reset. Edit or delete it if your plan has changed.
Do not assume that an alert created on one product appears on every product from the same company. For example, Schwab says mobile alerts do not synchronize with thinkorswim or Schwab.com alerts.

Fidelity
Fidelity’s Active Trader Tools help describes a flow that starts with Set Alert, followed by entering a symbol, choosing an alert type, and specifying its parameters. Documented choices include price movement, percentage change, 52-week high or low, and moving-average crossings. Delivery options depend on the account and platform settings. The help page may reflect an older interface; if a menu name has changed, use Fidelity’s current help entry or the labels in your logged-in account. See Fidelity’s Alerts help.

When the brokerage alert is enough
Use the brokerage’s own alert when you need a simple threshold, want notifications alongside your holdings, or prefer not to maintain another account. A separate charting service becomes useful only for a specific gap, such as chart conditions, more detailed expiration controls, or a delivery channel your broker does not offer. Before duplicating an alert, decide which service is the authoritative list so you do not later forget one copy.
TradingView-style chart alerts
Charting platforms can create an alert from the chart itself or from an alert manager. TradingView’s documented setup includes a trigger condition, frequency, timer or expiration, a name, and a message. Notification actions include app notification, pop-up, and email. The service’s current instructions are at TradingView’s alert setup help.
A descriptive name helps when several alerts are active. For example, “ABC below 95—review earnings exposure” identifies the symbol, direction, level, and intended follow-up without implying that a trade must occur. Put context in the message, not in the threshold itself; the threshold should remain an unambiguous numerical condition.
Choosing a useful threshold
Above and below conditions
An “above” alert is appropriate when you want to investigate a move through resistance or a level you selected. A “below” alert can tell you that a price has crossed a downside level. Neither direction predicts what happens next. Select a level because it answers a monitoring question, not because the number appears precise.
Price versus percentage movement
A fixed price works well for one security or for a planned review level. A percentage condition is easier to compare across securities with very different prices. If your provider offers both, write down why you chose one; otherwise it is easy to mistake a $5 move for the same event in a $50 stock and a $500 stock.

Additional conditions
Some platforms expose 52-week highs and lows, moving-average crossings, or other chart conditions. These can reduce the number of separate price alerts, but they also introduce settings you must understand: the time period, the data series used, and whether the event is evaluated intraday or after a bar closes. If the interface does not make those details clear, use a simple threshold or consult the provider’s help material.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDelivery settings that determine whether you notice
App push notifications
Push is usually the fastest option on a phone, but it requires permission at two levels. In the service’s account settings, enable mobile alerts; in the phone’s operating-system settings, allow notifications for the app. Focus modes, battery-saving restrictions, or a logged-out session can also delay delivery.
Email is useful when you want a searchable record or use a device other than your phone. Confirm the address, check spam and filtered folders, and look for a provider-specific alert preference separate from general marketing email settings.
Text messages and desktop pop-ups
Text and desktop options are provider-specific. If offered, verify the phone number or desktop permission and understand whether carrier filtering or browser settings can interfere. TradingView, for example, lists app notification, pop-up, and email actions; another service may offer a different combination.
Test before relying on an alert
Do not wait for a consequential market move to discover that delivery is disabled. Create a temporary alert at a level you can observe, confirm that the message arrives through the selected channel, then delete the test. A test proves the notification path, not the timing or accuracy of every future trigger.

One-time, recurring, and expiring alerts
Read the lifecycle controls before saving. A one-time alert normally deactivates after the first trigger. A recurring alert can fire repeatedly while a condition remains true or each time the price crosses it, depending on the provider’s definition. An expiration date can prevent an old thesis from generating a surprising message months later.
- One-time: best for a single review point, such as checking a filing or earnings release after a level is reached.
- Recurring: useful for ongoing monitoring, but it can create noise if the price repeatedly crosses the threshold.
- Timed expiration: appropriate when the alert is relevant only through an event or date.
- Manual reset: some systems require you to edit or reactivate an alert after it fires.
After every trigger, open the alert manager. Confirm whether it remains active and either update the level, change the expiration, or delete it. This review is also where you catch duplicate alerts created on mobile, web, and a separate charting product.
How to compare two alert services
There is no universal best provider. Compare the capabilities that affect your routine:
| Decision point | Questions to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Trigger choices | Does it support above/below price, percentage change, 52-week levels, moving averages, or chart conditions? | You can express the monitoring question without workaround alerts. |
| Delivery | Are app push, email, text, pop-up, or combinations available? | The alert is useful only if it reaches a channel you actually check. |
| Repeat and expiry | Can you choose one-time versus recurring behavior and an expiration date? | Lifecycle controls prevent stale or noisy notifications. |
| Cross-platform management | Do mobile, web, and charting products share one list? | Separate lists can create duplicates or leave forgotten alerts. |
| Account fit | Does your existing broker already provide the needed condition and channel? | A second service adds maintenance unless it fills a real capability gap. |
Record the answers for the specific account and edition you use. Features can vary by platform, region, and account type, and providers can change their interfaces.

Preventing missed or misleading notifications
Verify the symbol and quote context
Search results can contain similarly named companies, multiple share classes, funds, or listings on different exchanges. Match the ticker, company name, and exchange shown on the quote page before setting the threshold. If the provider offers a choice of quote fields, note whether the condition uses last trade, bid, ask, or another value.
Best Value
Account for market hours and gaps
An alert can be triggered by a price movement that occurs quickly or outside the regular session if your provider includes extended-hours data. Check the service’s definition of the monitored session. A price can also jump over your threshold; receiving an alert does not mean the market traded at your exact number.
Keep alert volume manageable
Too many messages cause people to mute notifications or ignore them. Group alerts by purpose, use meaningful names, and remove levels that no longer answer a decision you care about. For a watchlist, start with one or two levels per security and add complexity only when you know how the service evaluates it.
Protect the account
Use a unique password and the provider’s available sign-in protections. An alert itself is not a trade, but account access can expose holdings and enable someone else to submit orders. Treat notification emails as informational and open the app directly when you need to inspect an order ticket.

- Open the notification through the official app or site. Avoid acting from a message link if you are unsure of its destination.
- Confirm the current quote and timestamp. The displayed price may have moved since the trigger.
- Check the condition that fired. Verify the symbol, direction, and whether the alert was based on an intraday or closing value.
- Decide whether you are only gathering information or considering an order. An alert does not create an obligation to trade.
- If you submit an order, read the order ticket. Confirm order type, quantity, duration, and any stop or limit parameters before sending.
- Return to the alert list. Determine whether the alert deactivated, remains recurring, or needs a new expiration.
The SEC’s order-type guidance explains the trade-off: a limit order can constrain the execution price if it fills, but it is not guaranteed to execute; a market order can execute at a different available price. Its stop-order bulletin explains that a stop becomes a market order once triggered, while a stop-limit order can avoid execution beyond its limit but may not fill. Read the complete guidance at Investor.gov’s order-types bulletin and Investor.gov’s stop-order bulletin.
Troubleshooting checklist
No notification arrived
- Check that the alert is still active and attached to the correct symbol.
- Confirm the threshold and direction; “above” and “below” are not interchangeable.
- Review app, account, browser, email, and phone notification permissions.
- Check spam, focus-mode, battery-saving, and carrier or browser filters.
- Verify whether the condition is evaluated only during certain market sessions or after a bar closes.
- Look for a separate triggered-alert tab or history; the alert may have fired and then been removed.
Too many notifications arrived
- Change a recurring alert to one-time if you need only the first crossing.
- Increase the distance between thresholds or add an expiration date.
- Delete duplicate alerts created on different platforms.
- Use a percentage or chart condition only when its behavior is clear.
The alert appears on one device but not another
Check whether the provider maintains separate alert lists for mobile, web, and a charting product. Schwab specifically notes that mobile alerts do not synchronize with thinkorswim or Schwab.com alerts. Recreate the alert in the product you intend to monitor rather than assuming a shared list.
The price shown differs from the expected trigger
Review the quote field, trading session, and timestamp used by the service. Fast markets can move through a level without trading at the exact displayed number, and different products can use different data feeds or evaluation intervals. Treat the message as a prompt to inspect the current quote, not as proof of an executable price.
A practical maintenance routine
Once a week or after a major portfolio change, open the alert manager and perform a short audit:
- Remove alerts tied to securities you no longer follow.
- Check every target against your current monitoring question.
- Review expiration dates around earnings, filings, or other events you were watching.
- Confirm the delivery channel still reaches a device or inbox you check.
- Look for duplicate symbols across mobile, web, and charting products.
- Review triggered alerts and decide whether each should be closed, reset, or replaced.
This routine keeps notifications actionable without requiring you to watch the market continuously. It does not predict price direction or replace your own research and risk decisions.
