To play at 2560×1440, connect Steam Machine to a display that supports 1440p through either its HDMI 2.0 or DisplayPort 1.4 output, select the correct input, complete SteamOS sign-in, and choose 2560×1440 in the display or game settings available on your system. Then check the game’s Steam Machine Verified information before assuming it will hold your preferred frame rate or graphics quality.
Valve lists output modes well above 1440p, but those are connection limits, not game-performance guarantees. A game can still require lower settings, a lower refresh rate, or a different resolution to run consistently.

What you need for 1440p
A 1440p setup has three independent requirements: the Steam Machine output, the cable and input path, and the display mode. The target image is 2560×1440 pixels, but the refresh rate, HDR behavior and variable-refresh support depend on the specific input and display model.

Steam Machine display outputs and their limits
The official Steam Machine listing identifies two video outputs. The figures below describe what Valve lists for the interfaces; they do not predict a game’s frame rate or graphics settings.
| Output | Valve-listed maximum display modes | Features listed by Valve | Best reason to choose it |
|---|---|---|---|
| HDMI 2.0 | Up to 4K at 120Hz | HDR, FreeSync and HDMI-CEC | Your TV or monitor has HDMI but no suitable DisplayPort input, or you want TV control features. |
| DisplayPort 1.4 | Up to 4K at 240Hz or 8K at 60Hz | HDR and FreeSync | Your monitor offers its preferred 1440p refresh rate through DisplayPort. |
These specifications are published on Valve’s Steam Machine product page. A display may support fewer modes than the output, and a game may render below the display mode even when the connection can carry it. Do not treat 4K120, 4K240 or 8K60 as evidence that a particular title will run at 1440p at 120 or 240 frames per second.
Choose the display before you connect anything
Confirm native resolution and input support
Look up the display’s manual or specification sheet and verify that 2560×1440 is accepted on the exact port you will use. Some TVs and monitors offer different resolutions or refresh rates on different inputs. A display can be physically 1440p yet accept that signal only through one port, or it may accept 1440p but limit it to a lower refresh rate.
Match the refresh-rate expectation
Decide whether you want a conventional 60Hz living-room experience or a higher-refresh monitor. Check the display’s stated refresh rate specifically at 2560×1440, not only its headline maximum at another resolution. Steam Machine cannot select a mode the display does not advertise over that connection.

- Quality Visuals: The KG271U 27" IPS monitor with 2560 x 1440 QHD resolution in a 16:9 aspect ratio presents stunning, high-quality images with excellent detail. The zero-frame design does away with the thick frames found on conventional monitors freeing up precious screen space.
- AMD FreeSync Technology: Say “goodbye” to stuttering and tearing. With AMD FreeSync, the monitor’s frames are synced with the graphics card’s frames, which eliminates screen tearing and provide the smoothest gaming experience.
- Up to 180Hz: The 180Hz refresh rate speeds up the frames per second to deliver an ultra-smooth 2D motion scene. With a rapid refresh rate of up to 180Hz, Acer Gaming Monitors shorten the time it takes for frame rendering, lower input lag and provide gamers an excellent in-game experience.
- Responsive!!: Up to 0.5ms GTG (Gray to Gray) response time enhanced gamers’ in-game experience. No matter the fast-moving action or any dramatic transitions will be all rendered smoothly without the annoying effects of smearing or ghosting with KG271U Gaming Monitor.
- New Depths of Color Accuracy: is monitor is ideal for color-critical projects producing accurate colors, supporting DCI-P3 95%. An amazing monitor for graphic designers, photographers, and film editors.
Decide whether HDR or variable refresh matters
Valve lists HDR and FreeSync support for both HDMI 2.0 and DisplayPort 1.4. Your display must also support the feature, and it may expose it only on particular inputs or through a setting in its on-screen menu. If HDR or FreeSync is important, check the display documentation and enable the feature there before troubleshooting SteamOS.
Monitor or TV?
A monitor normally provides clearer information about supported resolution and refresh combinations and is easier to position close to a desk. A TV can be the better choice for a sofa, but its input labels, picture modes and overscan controls vary widely. In either case, use the display’s information panel to confirm the incoming signal rather than relying only on the game’s settings.
Connect Steam Machine to a 1440p display
- Turn off or put the display in standby. Place Steam Machine where its ventilation openings are not blocked and where the cable can reach without tension.
- Choose one video path. Connect the display to Steam Machine’s HDMI 2.0 output with HDMI, or to its DisplayPort 1.4 output with DisplayPort. Do not connect through an adapter, dock or receiver unless that device explicitly supports 2560×1440 at the refresh rate you intend to use.
- Connect power and input devices. Attach power, then connect a keyboard and mouse or prepare a controller for the first-use screens. A wired input is useful if wireless pairing has not yet been completed.
- Power on the display and select the matching input. Use the display’s Input or Source control and choose the HDMI or DisplayPort port containing the Steam Machine cable. Selecting the wrong port produces a blank screen even when the hardware is working.
- Start Steam Machine. Wait for the SteamOS interface or first-run setup to appear. If the display reports no signal, follow the troubleshooting branches below before changing several settings at once.
- Complete SteamOS setup and sign in. Follow the on-screen prompts for language, network and Steam account access. Signing in exposes your library and allows Steam to download updates and cloud data.
- Confirm the displayed signal. Use the monitor or TV’s information screen to verify that it reports 2560×1440 once you select that mode in the available SteamOS or game settings. The exact menu wording can change with the SteamOS build, so use the current labels shown on your device rather than a fixed online click path.
- Launch a game and set its own resolution. In the title’s video or graphics settings, choose 2560×1440 if it is offered, then select a refresh rate the display and connection both support. Apply the change and check the result in actual gameplay.
Use SteamOS and the TV-friendly interface
Living-room control
Valve’s Big Picture setup guide explains the TV-oriented Steam interface and supports navigation with a controller or with a keyboard and mouse. Steam Machine includes a built-in Steam Controller wireless adapter; Valve says one adapter can support up to four Steam Controllers. Pair the controller according to the prompts shown by your current SteamOS version, and keep a keyboard or mouse available for account or network fields that are easier to type.

Display settings versus game settings
There are two places where resolution can be controlled. The system or display settings determine the signal SteamOS sends to the screen. A game’s video settings determine how that title renders inside that signal. If the desktop is 2560×1440 but a game is set to 1920×1080, the game may be scaled to the desktop mode. Conversely, a game can offer 2560×1440 while the system is outputting another mode. Check both locations and verify the final signal on the display.

Do not force a mode the display cannot accept
If 2560×1440 is absent from the available choices, do not select an arbitrary custom timing. Recheck the cable, input and display documentation first. The port may have negotiated a restricted mode, or the display may not support 1440p through that input. Restore a known-compatible mode before experimenting with another connection.
Check Steam Machine Verified before choosing game settings
Valve says Steam Machine Verified ratings are intended to help customers understand how their games will run on Steam Machine. Open the current store information for each title and read its Steam Machine rating before promising yourself a particular 1440p experience.
What a rating can and cannot tell you
- A Verified designation is a compatibility and experience aid for Steam Machine.
- It is not a universal frame-rate guarantee at 2560×1440, nor does it promise the same graphics preset, refresh rate or consistency in every scene.
- Settings, patches, display mode and the game’s own workload can all change the result.
The official product information provides hardware specifications but does not provide a complete set of game-specific 1440p benchmarks. For a demanding title without useful current rating information, look for a recent test of that exact game on Steam Machine rather than extrapolating from the output specification.
How to choose HDMI or DisplayPort
Neither connector is universally superior for 1440p. Select the path that matches the display’s actual input and the mode you want.

Set expectations for 1440p performance
1440p asks the GPU to render 3,686,400 pixels per frame, more than 1080p and fewer than 4K. That explains why a game may be more demanding at 1440p, but it does not establish a frame rate for Steam Machine. The listed semi-custom AMD Zen 4 processor has six cores and 12 threads, and the semi-custom AMD RDNA 3 graphics processor is paired with 16GB of DDR5 system memory plus 8GB of GDDR6 VRAM. Valve also lists SteamOS 3. These are configuration details, not a 1440p benchmark.
Start with the game’s 2560×1440 option and a refresh rate your display supports. If motion is inconsistent, lower demanding graphics options inside the game or choose a lower output mode; make one change at a time so you can identify which setting helped. Record the mode that remains stable rather than assuming the highest selectable number is the best experience.

No signal after connecting the cable
- Confirm Steam Machine and the display are powered and that the display is set to the exact HDMI or DisplayPort input used.
- Reseat both ends of the cable. Check for bent connectors, a loose fit or a cable routed through a device that may not support the desired mode.
- Try the other output on Steam Machine or another known-compatible input on the display. This separates a port or cable problem from a SteamOS setting.
- Temporarily use a conservative display mode that the screen clearly supports, then try 2560×1440 again after the image is stable.
1440p is missing from the choices
Check the display manual for the input-specific resolution table. Some screens expose 1440p only after a setting such as an enhanced or computer input mode is enabled. Verify that the cable is connected directly and that an adapter, receiver or switch is not limiting the signal. If the display never lists 2560×1440 for that input, use a different input or display rather than forcing an unsupported mode.
The display shows 1440p but not the desired refresh rate
Read the display’s specification for 2560×1440, not its maximum refresh at 1080p. Try DisplayPort if the monitor reserves its higher 1440p rate for that input, or HDMI if the TV’s documentation gives HDMI the broader mode support. The output’s theoretical ceiling cannot override a display-side limit.

HDR looks washed out or does not activate
Confirm HDR is enabled in the display’s own menu and that the selected input supports it. Check the game’s HDR option separately. If desktop colors look wrong, disable HDR temporarily, establish a correct SDR image, then re-enable HDR and test one title at a time.
Variable refresh does not engage
FreeSync is listed for both Steam Machine outputs, but the display must support it on the chosen input and range. Enable the display’s variable-refresh option, use a direct cable connection, and verify the game is producing frames within the display’s supported range. If the display still flickers or drops signal, turn the feature off and use a fixed refresh rate while you isolate the cause.
Controller pairing is difficult
Keep a wired keyboard or mouse connected while completing first boot. Move the controller close to Steam Machine, remove competing wireless obstacles and follow the pairing prompts presented by SteamOS. Because the built-in adapter supports up to four Steam Controllers, disconnect unused controllers if you have reached that limit.
A game launches at the wrong resolution
Open that game’s video settings and select 2560×1440, then apply and restart the title if it requests a restart. If the option disappears after a change, return to the last working mode through the display or system settings and try again. Some games retain their own configuration independently of the SteamOS desktop mode.
Storage and installation planning
Valve lists Steam Machine configurations with either 512GB or 2TB of NVMe storage and support for microSD expansion. The usable space is lower than the advertised capacity after SteamOS and formatting. Choose the larger configuration or plan expansion if your library contains several large games; resolution itself does not change the game files’ installed size.
Storage configuration and other specifications can change before availability. Check the live Valve listing for the exact configuration offered in your region rather than relying on an older product description.

Availability and changing specifications
Valve flags some Steam Machine specifications as subject to change ahead of availability. The product page includes storage and ordering information, but prices, delivery timing and purchase eligibility can differ by region and can change. Check the current listing immediately before buying or planning a build. The connection procedure remains the same: match a supported display input and mode, complete SteamOS setup, then verify each game rather than inferring performance from the port specification.
