The dedicated adapter is Valve’s preferred path; streaming over ordinary home Wi‑Fi works as a fallback but is more vulnerable to congestion.
What you need before starting
Set aside the following items before turning on Steam Frame. Completing these checks first prevents most setup interruptions.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Steam Frame headset and its wireless adapter: The adapter is included and creates a direct 6 GHz link between the headset and host PC.
- Power adapter: Valve specifies at least 27 W for initial setup and recommends a 45 W adapter. The headset starts in a special mode that requires external power before you can complete setup.
- Windows PC with Steam: The computer must be able to run the current Steam client and SteamVR. Valve’s reviewed documentation does not publish a complete consumer PC minimum-spec table, so do not treat an unverified CPU, GPU, or USB specification as an official requirement.
- Steam account: Use the same account on the headset and PC. A mismatch can prevent the adapter-pairing prompt from appearing.
- Local network access: Steam Frame needs a network connection during first-run setup to sign in and download updates. The network can be changed later from the VR Dashboard.
- USB 3 connection: Plan to connect the wireless adapter to a USB 3 port on the host PC. An optional USB 3.0 extension cable can help you position it, but Valve does not list an extension as a required accessory.
Step 1: Power on Steam Frame and install its first update
- Connect the headset to the power adapter. Use an adapter rated for at least 27 W; 45 W is Valve’s recommendation.
- Press the headset’s power button. Because the headset ships in a special startup mode, it may not proceed until power is connected.
- Follow the in-headset prompts to download and install the available system update. Keep the headset connected to power while the update runs.
- Allow Steam Frame to reboot when the update finishes.
- Sign in to Steam in the headset. Use the account you intend to use on the host PC.
A completed reboot and successful Steam sign-in indicate that the headset’s initial software setup is finished. If the update does not begin, check that the power adapter is connected securely and that the headset has joined a network in the next step.
Step 2: Connect the headset to a network
During first-run setup, choose your local network and enter its password using the headset’s virtual keyboard. This connection is used for account sign-in and software downloads; it is separate from the direct wireless link created later by the included adapter.

After setup, network management is available at Steam Settings > Internet in the VR Dashboard. Use that page to change networks or reconnect if the headset reports that it is offline.
What the network connection is—and is not
The home network provides internet access and can also carry VR streaming if you choose the Wi‑Fi fallback. When you use the included adapter, however, the headset-to-PC stream travels over the adapter’s dedicated link rather than relying on your normal home Wi‑Fi radio.
Step 3: Prepare Steam and SteamVR on the host PC
- Install or update the Steam client on the computer that will run your VR games.
- Install SteamVR from the Steam library if it is not already installed.
- For the newest compatibility fixes, open Steam’s beta settings and opt into the Steam Frame, Steam client, and SteamVR beta channels recommended in Valve’s current documentation. If you prefer stable releases, you can remain on the default branches, but a pairing problem may be resolved first in the beta builds.
- Close any running VR software before connecting the adapter. This gives SteamVR a clean opportunity to install its driver and detect the headset.
Do not launch games yet. The adapter driver must be accepted and the headset paired before SteamVR can present Steam Frame as an available headset.
Step 4: Connect the wireless adapter and install its driver
- Plug the included wireless adapter into an available USB 3 port on the host PC. A rear motherboard port is often a practical starting point because it avoids hubs and front-panel cable clutter.
- Start SteamVR on the PC.
- When SteamVR displays a driver-installation prompt, accept it and wait for installation to complete.
- If no prompt appears, exit SteamVR and reboot the PC. Start SteamVR again after Windows has finished restarting.
The driver prompt is the expected handoff between the USB adapter and SteamVR. If the adapter is connected through a USB hub or a port that is not operating at USB 3 speed, move it to a direct USB 3 connection before repeating the restart.

Step 5: Pair Steam Frame with the adapter
Automatic pairing
- After the driver is installed, wait for SteamVR or the headset to show a pairing request.
- Choose Pair.
- Look at the code displayed inside Steam Frame.
- Enter that code with the headset’s virtual keyboard and confirm.
- Wait for the confirmation that the adapter and headset are paired.
The code is a one-time identity check between this headset and this adapter. Keep the headset awake and near the adapter until confirmation appears.
Manual pairing
If the automatic request never appears, open the Steam client on the PC and go to Steam Settings > Remote Play > Wireless Streaming Adapter. Choose the pairing command on that page and enter the code shown in the headset. Manual pairing uses the same code-based process but starts from the PC’s settings instead of a pop-up.
Step 6: Start a SteamVR session from the headset
- Put on Steam Frame and open the Steam menu in the VR interface.
- Find the name of the host PC you just paired.
- Select the PC name.
- Wait while SteamVR launches on the computer and the VR Dashboard changes to the PC-connected view.
At this point Steam Frame functions as a wireless SteamVR headset. Valve describes the result this way: “Once paired, under the Steam Menu in the VR dashboard you should see your PC’s name. Click your PC’s name to connect. This will launch SteamVR on your PC, and your Steam Frame should now act just like any normal wired headset (sans wires).”

To end the session, exit SteamVR or disconnect from the PC in the Steam menu. Leaving the headset connected to power while it installs updates is advisable, but it is not necessary to keep it plugged in for ordinary wireless play.

Adapter connection versus home Wi‑Fi
You can reach SteamVR by two paths. The included adapter is the default choice for a consistent playspace; home Wi‑Fi is useful when the adapter cannot be positioned conveniently or when you are testing the headset away from the adapter.
| Connection method | Pairing and setup | Reliability and congestion | Placement guidance | SteamVR reconnection |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Included 6 GHz wireless adapter | Install the SteamVR driver, then pair with the code shown in Steam Frame. | Dedicated direct link; Valve presents this as the best-performing path for the headset. | Keep the adapter unobstructed with a clear line of sight to the playspace and within approximately 20 feet, following Valve’s support guidance. | SteamVR can automatically reconnect to the last wireless headset when you launch SteamVR from the PC. |
| Home Wi‑Fi | Join the headset to the local network; no USB adapter-driver installation is needed for this path. | Possible, but more exposed to household traffic and congestion, so Valve describes it as less reliable than the direct adapter. | Use the network already configured in the VR Dashboard. Performance depends on the conditions of that network. | The automatic reconnect behavior documented for the wireless-headset path is most predictable when the paired adapter is available. |
Use the adapter whenever you can place it in an open position near the play area. Select Wi‑Fi as a fallback rather than assuming it will provide the same consistency in a busy home network.
How to position the adapter for a stable session
Radio performance can change when the adapter is hidden behind a PC, monitor, desk, or other equipment. Start with a direct USB 3 connection that leaves the adapter exposed toward the playspace. If the computer must remain under a desk, an optional USB 3.0 extension cable can move the adapter to a more open location. The cable is a positioning aid, not part of the required Steam Frame package.

Keep a clear line of sight between the adapter and the area where you will use the headset. Valve’s guidance places the adapter at approximately 20 feet or less from the playspace. Treat that figure as a placement guideline rather than a guaranteed maximum: walls, furniture, and competing radio traffic can reduce the practical range.

Before blaming the headset, test the adapter in the same room with a short, unobstructed path. Once the connection is stable there, move it gradually to the final location and check SteamVR after each change.
Troubleshooting by symptom
No pairing prompt appears
- Confirm that Steam, SteamVR, and Steam Frame are on the software channels you selected in Step 3, then restart SteamVR.
- Reboot the PC so the wireless-adapter driver has another chance to install.
- Restart Steam Frame and return to the pairing screen.
- Verify that the headset and PC are signed in to the same Steam account.
- Use the manual path at Steam Settings > Remote Play > Wireless Streaming Adapter if the automatic request still does not show.
The adapter is detected inconsistently
- Move it from a hub or marginal port to a direct USB 3 port.
- Place it where it has an unobstructed view toward the playspace.
- Try an optional USB 3.0 extension cable if the PC’s built-in ports force the adapter behind furniture or a metal case.
- After changing ports or placement, restart SteamVR and reconnect from the headset’s Steam menu.
SteamVR reconnects to another headset or refuses to use Steam Frame
Disconnect or unplug a wired headset before launching SteamVR again. Valve notes that a wired headset may need to be removed so SteamVR can reconnect to Steam Frame. Then start SteamVR and select the host PC from the headset’s Steam menu.
The headset can sign in but cannot start streaming
- Check that the headset completed its update and rebooted before you attempted pairing.
- Confirm that the adapter is connected and its driver was accepted in SteamVR.
- Check the account identity on both devices.
- Try the dedicated adapter instead of home Wi‑Fi if the network is busy or unstable.
Streaming over Wi‑Fi is unreliable
Wi‑Fi streaming can be affected by congestion that does not affect ordinary web browsing. Move back to the included adapter, place it in clear line of sight, and keep the headset within the approximate distance guidance. If you must use Wi‑Fi, reduce competing traffic on the local network and reconnect from the headset after the network stabilizes.
The headset will not complete first-run setup
- Reconnect the power adapter and verify that it meets the 27 W minimum.
- Join a local network from the setup screen so the headset can download its update.
- Allow the reboot to finish before attempting Steam sign-in.
Using Steam Frame after the first successful connection
Once pairing is complete, the routine is shorter. Power on the headset, make sure the adapter is connected to the PC, and open the Steam menu in VR. Select the remembered PC name to launch SteamVR. Valve says SteamVR can automatically reconnect to the last wireless headset when SteamVR is launched from the PC, so starting SteamVR on the computer is another way to trigger reconnection when the adapter and headset are available.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
If you change PCs, treat the new computer as a separate host: install Steam and SteamVR there, connect the adapter to that machine, accept the driver prompt, and pair again. Keep the same Steam account if you want the headset and PC to recognize one another without account-related conflicts.
When you change rooms or rearrange the computer, recheck adapter placement before changing software settings. A clear path and a nearby USB 3 connection address the most common physical causes of an otherwise unexplained drop in reliability.
What Valve’s published guidance does not establish
Valve’s current setup pages specify the power requirements, pairing flow, adapter placement guidance, and supported Wi‑Fi fallback described here. They do not provide an official dated end-to-end latency benchmark or a complete consumer PC minimum-specification table in the material used for this guide. Any latency number or hardware threshold presented without a test condition should therefore be treated as unofficial rather than as a Steam Frame requirement.
